When John McCain had his snarling run-in with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register the other day, Markos wondered why the aging senator was "wasting time in Iowa, where he’s not even remotely competitive"? Yesterday, he quoted former McCain adviser Mike Murphy to the same effect.
But really, what else is the McCain campaign going to do with him? McCain spent the month of September touring the so-called battleground states… and those are the states where his poll numbers have deteriorated sharply.
Remember that from early on, Republican sources have indicated that McCain’s best hope of winning was to make the contest a referendum on Obama. Everytime he shows up in person somewhere, though, he undercuts that hoped-for narrative… not to mention demonstrating the palpable lack of enthusiasm for his candidacy among the GOP rank and file.
This, in fact, is one of the many incentives McCain’s handlers had to suggest that he "suspend" his campaign before the first presidential debate — if nothing else, it would get the old guy off the trail. It may also be why McCain’s current campaign schedule, according to his own website, shows a string of rallies featuring VP nominee Sarah Palin… but zero scheduled appearances for the guy at the top of the ticket (aside from the two upcoming televised debates).
Which seems to fit in with a larger pattern of the Republican side realizing there just isn’t a positive case to be made for their presidential candidate.

Record Refutes Palin’s Sudan Claim
Palin Administration Against Sudan Divestment Before It Was For It, Documents Show
By JUSTIN ROOD
October 3, 2008—
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin fought to protest atrocities in Sudan by dropping assets tied to the country’s brutal regime from the state’s multi-billion-dollar investment fund, she claimed during Thursday’s vice presidential debate.
Not quite, according to a review of the public record and according to the recollections of a legislator and others who pushed a measure to divest Alaskan holdings in Sudan-linked investments.
”The [Palin] administration killed our bill,” said Alaska state representative Les Gara, D-Anchorage. Gara and state Rep. Bob Lynn, R-Anchorage, co-sponsored a resolution early this year to force the Alaska Permanent Fund a $40 billion investment fund, a portion of whose dividends are distributed annually to state residents to divest millions of dollars in holdings tied to the Sudanese government.
McBush is hoping to save all the Bush states, but New Hampshire and New Mexico seem to already be GONE- GONE.
I don’t see Pennsylvania or Minnesota being viable targets either. What’s an old fascist to do?
Or the vice-presidential candidate.
If Obama holds the Kerry states and takes Iowa, New Mexico, and New Hampshire- he only needs one more moderately sized pickup
You mean she fibbed?!
The Ford Ranger works in this case. ;-)
Considering that he’s competitive in Missouri right now, I’d say he got his pickups lined up nicely.
tinka dat!
Do you think she wants cheese with this whine? The Couric Interviews
“The Sarah Palin in those interviews was a little bit annoyed,” she said. “It’s like, man, no matter what you say, you are going to get clobbered. If you choose to answer a question, you are going to get clobbered on the answer. If you choose to try to pivot and go to another subject that you believe that Americans want to hear about, you get clobbered for that too.”
I’d rather push my chevy than drive a ford
good to see ya – put out an APB on tuesday :D
I don’t know how to resist this feeling that it’s over.
Where is he,indeed!
I would rather drive my Ford than push your Chevy. It only has 410,000 miles on it.
If this horserace is petering out then I’m gonna spend more time with my family…or watch old movies.
It ain’t over till McSame makes his concession and wanders back to the Senate to while away his term in blessed obscurity.
an old fascist in that positions talks to Katherine Harris
per Josh and others, McLost is running nothing BUT negative ads from here on out – only half of Obama’s ads are negative
So where does McBush send Sarah Palin so that she can add to his electoral vote margin? Texas! Is McBush in trouble in TEXAS?
I think she likes to be clobbered.
I can’t help thinking how much infrastructure a trillion bucks would buy.
I think that was much more than fib
If McCain has to make a consession speech, it’ll be interesting to see how he works his POW status into it.
They may well have to fight for MO or even IN and we’re staring to feel good down here in FL. will Barcak win FL? it’ll still be an upset. but yes, we can!!
Executive Experience!
It’s all about parading her in front of the distant cameras. like stalking an exotic animal on Discovery Channel.
You have to admire McSame’s cojones, picking a running mate from a state with three electoral votes.
Some of Palin’s lies, of course, were McBush certified- memorized by rote at the feet of the McBush wisemen– the lie about Alaska was probably free lanced.
Once she gets the hang of it, Palin can make up her OWN fuckin lies! She’s brilliant!
“I just got my sorry ass shot down just like in Vietnam.”
I picture him bursting into unmanly sobs and whimpering, “You can’t do this to me–I was a POW!”
tw3k! That required a spew alert!
Palin’s response to the shoots wolves ad on the campaign trail: you gotta do what you gotta do!
has the ring of reformer, don’t it?
/s
he might not get it.
If McCain does lose in November, he probably thinks that sets him up for a repeat against Obama in 2012.
Sarah, I think, will have something to say about that, though.
Here’s McCain lovin’ his new lady
sama as Obama did.
sorry jmac, you are a POW vet with healthcare. boo hoo.
Carville on CNN held up that picture awhile back and said “It looks like a bait-and-tackle shop in south Looosiana.’

1,783 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen swopa and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
When do McCrazy’s “unfavorables” pass the Mason-Dixon Line on the way to hell? It seems that the major pollin’ folks are not askin’ the questions that would tell people that the game is over.
And by the way…I been canvassin’ for Obama in my little burg here on the edge of the heartland a democracy and anus a progress and Sarah Palin is drivin’ the “independents” and “uncommitted” women right into Obama’s arms. I haven’t hit a single door from the lists the Obama folks have given me that hasn’t asked “where do I sign” or “what can I do besides give money I haven’t got”…folks, the old Norske has been tellin ya for months now that this election is Obama’s ta lose and he isn’t about ta give it up.
So let’s stop pissin’ in our own shoes and keep the sights on the target…I have seen the enemy and he ain’t us and he surely ain’t Obama.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE STRUGGLE IS ALL THAT MATTERS!!
The GOP doesn’t look all that enthusiastic about McCain this year. If he proves himself a loser, can he really believe they’re going to give him another try?
funny, teddy! too bad mccain doesn’ tknow he’s the bottom of the ticket now. sarah’s expanding her powers as we speak and he’d better be flexible about it.
Please digg Swopa’s great post right here, firepups!
rwcole @ 5 -
New Hampshire was a Kerry state. Just not a Gore state.
it does!
swopa, I thought McCain was going to parachute into Spain in order to save
the economy, the free world, the VP debate, his campaign.Who says the Republicans don’t “do” science?
Cause: McCain spent the month of September touring the so-called battleground states…
Effect: and those are the states where his poll numbers have deteriorated sharply.
saw at Rasmussen — whatever it’s worth – that Barack & Joe are up 10 in NH as of yesterday.
I heard he was gonna go to the Middle East and jump out of the plane over Venezuela…and capture Putin!
why the aging senator was “wasting time in Iowa, where he’s not even remotely competitive”?
Why is the McCain campaign running attack ads in the expensive NYC Metro area? These amateurish efforts appear nightly on the national NBC News network program, and must be costing a bundle.
So which continent does he crash and burn on in this scenario?
The Republicans do not have a leader or any cohesive message at this point and it doesn’t inspire confidence in their ability to run the country.
Odd that they don’t find Fox enough.
He thinks the battleground states are Iraq and Afghanistan…and future states are Iran and Syria.
The last eight years ain’t helping them either.
Tweety asked the Pukes yesterday who is running the country…they just stared dumbfounded and I think I heard them say D’Oh….
I’d rather push my chevy than drive a ford
I always knew there was a reason I liked ya, Raven! ;-)
Norske, where exactly are you [which state]?
It’s so suprising that they didn’r respond in a cheerful chorus and say “The Decider”.
LOL! we can only hope that Oliver North is there to observe and report the glory.
Did you guys see the virgin voter piece on colbert this week? it was fall down funny!
remember to go to http://www.canivote.org!
Raven, Are you going to be here in the early morning? I don’t want to go ot but I have a bunny question and not the playboy type?
speaking of grit, where in the hell is airman sandy ego?
Craigslist is advertizing a maverick ready for the glue factory….
Poor John, he sooo wanted to spend the next 4 years extolling his own greatness.

Is McCain’s disappearance a campaign tactic on the political side or on the medical side? After that problem with his face and his confusion in attempting to leave the stage earlier this week, it would be interesting to know whether his health is taking a turn for the worse. Too bad the MSM won’t insist on the McPalin Campaign releasing his full medical records. I suspect there’s some serious stuff in there.
Raven, Punaise and RWCole…….Someone put up a bat signal?
-G
Personally, I think that McCain is sick and his staff is trying to hide it. That is why they are coming up with inane excuses to explain his gaffes. What do you think the poll number would be if they thought Sarah would be sworn in January.
If he has another 4 years.
I don’t know anything about that. I just hope someone asks him about his healthcare at the townhall debate, a la desmoines register style.
I was wondering about health too. Over the next two weeks it doesn’t look like anything is scheduled besides the debates.
What kind of a horse race runs an old nag?
Sorry for the OT, but, a nightmare thought (as usual):
Now that Bush has signed the bailout bill, can he issue a signing statement saying, in effect, that he is not bound by its restrictions and limitations?
I hope someone asks McCain (if he ever takes questions again)about the use of signing statements, and what he thinks would be an appropriate function of them.
If Bush does that, the Democrats should raise hell and draft more legislation.
Of course he can, he’s the decider and the dictator. He’ll decide via unitary executive claim in the signing statement what is to be done with the money for the security of the country.
Training in small-unit tactics wouldn’t hurt either.
Nate Silver is hard pressed to find any tangible McSame ground operation…
Perhaps a signing statement is what Paulson is counting on to circumvent the oversight etc., as he claimed he could do in his conference call the other day….hmmmm.
I usually check in @ 6 or so and then take the pups out for their fun. I feel like 10 lbs in a 5 lb bag right now so I ain’t sure.
I think McCain & Co. have a tiger (Palin) by the tail and don’t know what to do with it. I get the distinct feeling that all the cramming and coaching in the world will not stop Caribou Barbie from doing what Caribou Barbie wants to do.
When all is said and done, I think the “experts” will agree that McCain’s choice of running mate cost him the election. That’s my 2 cents for what it is worth.
blog-whistle politics….
Ian’s thoughts on the bailout vote in the new post.
So who want’s to be the 5th to comment on Ian’s new post 1 to 4 are bagged …….
Thanks! It has to do with a fenced in yard, a large bunny and a mutt! (and not the playboy type
Does anyone here read the Big Picture? Barry Ritholtz does a great job disecting what is going on. He is coming out with a new book called The Bailout nation and I can’t wait to read it.
the high school kids here do community service work in campaigns. one kid volunteered for the gop figuring she’d get tons of hours…it was a simple practical decision for her, not a lifelong committment.
There are always voter purges and Diebold software cheats. It ain’t over until the vote actually comes out in accord with the actual polls.
Another reason to keep him off the trail
Whatever it is that makes the left side of his face twitch (I think it’s most likely a facial nerve palsy from his lymph node dissection, but some have opined stroke as the cause), seems to get worse if he isn’t as well-rested and as stress-free as possible. The problem was really acting up badly during his announcement of the suspension of his campaign. At that time, the bailout plan had only been announced for a few days, and he probably hadn’t been getting enough rest during that time due to discussions on how to respond to the crisis added to the top of his campaign schedule. He looked 100% better by that Friday, after being off the trail a few days, and he performed about as well as can be expected in the debate that day.
His campaign probably figures that they could finally and absolutely lose the race in a single evening if their candidate were to decompensate into a full bore twitching episode in the middle of the stress of one of the two remaining debates. They probably place a higher priority on avoiding that by keeping their guy well-rested than on personal appearances on the trail.
