Politicians often quote dead politicians -- especially members of their own party. Republicans, determined to push ol' Ronnie up the charts to surpass FDR (good luck with that one) love quoting Reagan, almost as much as they love naming ugly buildings after him. And tonight was no different.
Sarah Palin, armed with her prep cards was a ready made Reagan attribution machine tonight. And she was determined, having practiced for the debate against Joe Biden as if he was a dangerous druid, to get those Reagan quotes out there. No matter what.
Jonathan Chait noticed this one in particular:
Palin's final quote was from Ronald Reagan, warning that without vigilance, "you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children, and our children's children, what it once was like in America when men were free."
What Palin did not mention -- probably because she did not know -- is that Reagan's quote was about what would happen in the sixties if Medicare was enacted. So what's worse; overwrought bullshit, quoting overwrought bullshit, or improperly using a quote that is overwrought bullshit?
Pretty laughable gaffe. Although, I'm sure General McKiernan, the American general in Afghanistan, really appreciates being called General McClellan too, but probably not as much as you falsely quoting him on a "surge" policy in that country.

Sarah does know that the younger voters really have no clue who Reagen was only her base 30%ers of a certain age know. Sarah is not going to bring in the youth vote quoting Reagen.
I thought Sarah being young was suppose to get the youth vote.
This is a good observation first Sarah is wrong and second the proper use of this quote is against Medicare a popular program but will the MSM push this story?
SNL should be hilariously funny if they skit the debates.
Poof
Too bad Joe didn’t have that factoid at his finger tips.
I was impressed, however, that he had the quote from the good General whatshisname readily at hand. I was screaming it verbatim at the TV set the minute that Sarah said “surge” in the same sentence with “Afghanistan.”
And I’m still pissed at Barack that he didn’t have Petraeus’s no-victory quote at hand against McCain.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_B._McClellan
Does Sarah believe in foreshadowing?
Whats bad for Tina Fey’s is good for the country. Tina’s Sarah is perfect because Sarah writes almost all the material herself there is little need to add or spice things up with Sarah.
I’m told that at one point McClellan sent Lincoln a letter and signed it “Headquarters in the saddle.” Whereupon Lincoln said, “Now I understand his problem; he has his headquarters where his hindquarters should be.”
LOL John McCain with secret plan to win the war really should have pulled his plan out and showed it to Bush!
As a young “candy striper” volunteer during my teens in CA I watched in horror as Reagan’s politics cut almost all funding to the mental hospitals.
I worked with Rubella patients. The most vulnerable of the vulnerable.
Children who were blind, deaf and retarded. Though several children weren’t retarded..just blind and partially deaf. And abandoned by their families as unworthy. Those are the children that haunt me to this day.
Where there were daytime programs to keep the children involved and functioning, listening to music, doing art, having people in their lives on an ongoing basis. that ended with Reagan.
With Reagan, there was no longer funding for these most “pitiful” of human beings. No necessary adult/patient ratio to avoid the dark days of smearing their feces on the walls, running tricycle tires over their faces just to FEEL something. No art, no music no hugs from candy stripers..
On my last day, I sat with Julie, a 10 year old girl whose family had abandoned her to the state institution because they’d assumed she was a Rubella child. She wasn’t. She was just partially deaf and institutionalized since birth. She was flawed.I told her I was leaving, it was my last day. She begged me to have a good life. She said she would always remember me.
FUCK YOU, MR.REAGAN!!!!
The stories that make us human. Let us never forget.
Voting machine errors at CNN–I just read the report card there, and it gave me chance to vote on the candidates. I Biden an A and Palin a C. The screen then moved my C grade to Biden. Sound familiar? Maybe Homer Simpson is running CNN.
Schoolhouse Rock also ended with Reagan.
I’d forgot how long these guys have been that mean. (A bit older than the SHR target audience at the time.)

Goodnight and may we all have clarity in the morrow,,may we not go blindly into the political frenzy.
May we realize that women are stronger than the cu#t word.Women are the strength of Family.
May we cherish men for their dedication to family.Men are the strength of family.
May we honor the weakest amongst us as the true symbol of the strengths a human must endure.
May we suspend judgement.
An atheist prayer.
Have been away from the toobs this week, anything interesting happening?
Has anyone there been watching the dollar lately?
For about a month it was gaining value against the Euro arriving at $1.40± just before the “rescue” which sent the dollar to $1.48 upon the proposal in Congress. When the proposal failed the dollar regained to $1.40 and has since reached $1.383 this morning. The wild fluctuations and the timing have been curious.

Good morning, pups. It’s Bobo and Krugman today. Bobo is fizzing about “The Palin Rebound.” He says that during the vice-presidential debate, Gov. Sarah Palin took her inexperience and made a mansion out of it. Where was this woman during her interview with Katie Couric? Well, Bobo, Katie Couric asked her questions and kept following up when she got bullshit answers. Given the debate setup Gwen Ifill couldn’t do that. And Caribou Barbie as much as said she wasn’t going to answer questions she didn’t want to, just spew talking points. It was rather like one of those talking dolls — pull the string, and out pops Talking Point #58. Bobo has gotten so overwrought and verklempt that he probably had to go change his clothes… Mr. Krugman is taking Bobo’s place at “The Edge of the Abyss” today. He says the financial news since the middle of last month has been grim. And what’s truly scary is that we’re entering a period of severe crisis with weak, confused leadership.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got banana pancakes with Vermont maple syrup this morning. What Palin showed me last night was that she can be stuffed full of canned answers/talking points. Big deal. And “perky” tends to give me hives. Have a good day. I’m off to look for the Calamine lotion. I still itch…
Good Morning, Sarah was obviously reading from cue cards. What was up with that? There were a few answers that she just looked down and read her notes.
Check to see if the Calamine instructions include “also cures ‘cute’ itch”. :-(
Musta been bright shining things happen this week; when will they ever learn, why won’t they never learn -
to keep the eye on the goal. (one answer to #16 - also look up genesis of “stool pigeon”)
youtube: Rep. Brad Sherman (D–CA) last night on House floor said that some members were privately told that failure to pass the bailout bill could result in “martial law in America.”
1) is mcclellan a general? 2) isn’t he the guy who was responsible for the troops in Anbar and got the “awakenning” going and almsot completely successful even before da surge? if it’s the same guy he wasn’t a general at that time. i dunno about now.
Refresh between votes and all will be well.
Frankly I think Tina Fey would have done better, would have been better prepared and would have been a damn sight more interesting.
Good Morning All ,
Scar et al are about to analyze the winking. Miki thinks it was awesome
You’re in luck! It says it does, and I left the bottle on the bathroom counter for you.
And the homeless became a full blown social class.
The deification of Saint Ronnie in the face of a contrary reality is one of the Republican Party’s great successes.
What was his approval rating at the end of 8 years?
Way worse than Clinton’s - and Clinton was impeached.
“Folk” history is about neither.
i noticed that too. she did pretty well with that. i only noticed pretty well into the deabte when she did it for a long stretch. she was prepared well to have an arttiotude of “Fuck it. I can’t do any worse.” So she just did what she wanted. She did her best and nobody can ask more than that. Only problem with that is that it’s frightening to realize that’s the best she can do.
Blink and Wink
It’s time for the policies that were begun by Reagan to be dismantled and thrown in the trash can of history. It’s also time to demytholigize Reagan in the minds of the underinformed and uninformed voter. Reagan and subsequent policies have brought the U.S. to the brink of collapse economically and have isolated the U.S. internationally.
Little Sarah is an excellent reader.
The whole class enjoys it her stories, with the exception of a few mean kids who think they are smarter than the rest of us.
Last thread we thought it was a desperate appeal to male voters a signal that she was available I don’t think Todd is paying her enough attention.
poof
Just checked and there’s none in the meds cabinet here so bless you.
Note to self: Ask allergist if they now have shots to cure this stuff.
Hell the MSM probably doesn’t even know. Remember, the corporate media is lazy and when you get right down to it, not particularly intelligent, just photogenic.
FWIW:

Don’t bother your allergist just yet — I’m hoping this will be a self-limiting condition, and will be gone in 4 or 5 weeks. It may be like seasonal allergic rhinitis though, so look out for it again in 3 or 4 years…
Hmmmm. I have been waiting to see if they would put the troops into the streets to “protect wall street” and I guess they may well do it. I was surprised when they did not have a “police action” when people marched on wall street last week but maybe they are saving the troops to bail out main street and not wall street
I’ve said this before and will keep posting this link because they really gotta call bullshit. “John McCain sounded the alarm about the problems with Fannie & Freddy. Bullshit. He co-sponsored a bill that had been dead for months, his “warning’ was lifted right from a report, and the bill was opposed by Bush (of all people) as too weak. That’s all they got. Unless Sarah comes up with something to bring to Katie.

Here’s a quote worth shoving down the throats of any and all Republicans whose hubris and ignorance has resulted in a diminishing of the U.S..
The political philosopher John Gray, who recently retired as a professor at the London School of Economics, wrote in the London paper The Observer: “Here is a historic geopolitical shift, in which the balance of power in the world is being altered irrevocably.
“The era of American global leadership, reaching back to the Second World War, is over… The American free-market creed has self-destructed while countries that retained overall control of markets have been vindicated.”
“In a change as far-reaching in its implications as the fall of the Soviet Union, an entire model of government and the economy has collapsed.
“How symbolic that Chinese astronauts take a spacewalk while the US Treasury Secretary is on his knees.”
P.S. Be getting ready to kiss that status g’by, the dollar is being played on the markets, who cares? for a brief moment “things” as in the illusion of things will sweeten, only to collapse after the political circus garners its authority to govern. Cassandra would waste her talents upon the noise of nattering nabobs.
Now there’s a Oxdown Diary, everybody needs to see that speech.
post debate on msnbc,i saw some scmuck, i forget who, on with matthews talking about how great palin was because she looked into the camera more than biden and the american people want to see that, get to know you, see what you look like. Somebody piped up “If you don’t answer any questions you look like a dope.” Was that Matthews? Anybody know?
There was one segment of the debate where Palin went totally into incoherent beauty queen mode where she went on for about 90 seconds stringing together talking points that made absolutely no sense at all.
I wish I could find a YouTube of that little segment.
Here’s what you probably saw, Roger Simon of Politico tire swinging for Palin/McCain.
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/
Here’s the schedule for Washington Journal
7:30 am - Amanda Carpenter, Townhall.com, National Political Reporter - Blog
Nico Pitney, Huffington Post, National Editor - Blog
8:15 am - Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) 21st District: Visalia, Clovis | Letter to Leadership objecting to bill
8:40 am - Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) 4th District: Eugene, Coos Bay, Roseburg
During the early 90’s, my sister, her husband, and my nephew got kicked out of the apartment building they were living in (as did everyone else), because it was going to be transferred into a home for the mentally challenged. Thanks to the Reagan years, they had no place to go for a week or two there.
Was hopping that Ifill would have asked Palin which books she wanted banned from the Wasilla Library but not surprised that Condi’s shoe shopping gal pal didn’t bring up the subject.
I’m not getting that clip to run. Who said “You look like a dope”? Fineman? I couldn’t tell. It was off camera which was on Simon.
I didn’t see it but on TPM there’s a piece on how Roger Simon was tire swinging for Palin/McCain. Don’t know who made the “dope” comment.
Current tally on who won the debate the http://www.politico.com/ poll has Biden up 82% to Palin’s 15%.
Do you have a link?
The only thing Palin proved last night is that she would make a credible stand in for Tina Fey.
T Bear actually found this.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7645743.stm
CNN’s poll has it 69% Biden, 27% Winker, 4% indecisive.
But, but, but…the right wingers of America think Babbler was fantastic and kicked Biden’s ass with 2-hour neocon infomercial!!!
Ifil was fine.
Thanks!
Newscasts are saying that the “punditzs” are calling the debate a draw.
Why didn’t she insist that Palin follow the rules of the “debate” and answer the questions?
Would you care to list those “rules” for us?
I’ll keep it simple. Rule Number 1: Answer the question that is posed.
The Pundits are ridiculous if they honestly believe that.
Well, if you look at a picture of McClellan, he does look a little like the First Dude (maybe it’s the moustache).
msnbc (126,000 peoples): Biden 78%; Palin 19.5%; Tie 2.6% (.5? .6? not a math wiz, but that doesn’t seem to add up.)
cnn:: Biden 51%; Palin 36%
FOX: don’t see a poll.(Thought it would be interesting)
Babbling on, cramming in neocon talking points, and asking her own question out loud so she could answer it is exactly the representation of the last 8 years! Thank you Sarah for showing Americans what we DON’T want for our country ever again.
great question. she tried very lamely and then gave up.
Ok, whine on.
her answer about two states in the middle east was especially horrible.
Oh, the punditzs believe it. The question is whether the American public believes the punditzs. Remember the representatives of the corporate media are lazy and not particularly intelligent, merely photogenic.
When Sarah said the Taliban is America’s ally, she was only half correct. If she had said al-Qaida/Osama/Taliban are The Base of the Bush Family & Friends I would have said, “That’s right my sistah!”. But she didn’t. She said they’re our best friends.
palin “cram” team - 10
ifil - 0
:-(
I know. She wants an embassy in Jerusalem. WTF.
T A L A B A N I
I wonder if Sarah as VP will have the Taliban come to the White House for tea? Huh.
We’ll know when we’re finished in Iraq when the Iraqi government can govern its people and when the Iraqi security forces can secure its people. And our commanders on the ground will tell us when those conditions have been met. And Maliki and Talabani also in working with us are knowing again that we are getting closer and closer to that point, that victory that’s within sight.
Right wingers are calling in the Bill Press radio show on KPOJ http://620kpoj.com/main.html and crowing how Palin clearly won the debate and how she is more experienced than Obama. They really do live in a different universe.
A little incoherent. Get some sleep.
I beg your pardon. I asked for THE rules not your rules.
Imn my view, we’re finished in Iraq when the Iraqis say get the hell out of our country and they already are.
Not a rule just an observation.
How about a six pack and mooseburgers
Rules Of The Vice Presidential Debate
It is the Palin quote from last night where she mentioned Talibani not the Taliban.
Yeah. I re-read it and should have known that. My bad. I’m still in the early morning shit-for-brains mode.
LOL
Well, this is what happens when boneheads prep you and all they do is google “Reagan quotes” and do not check the context of any of the quotes and you, as the candidate, do not have the brains to question the quote’s context on your own.
When I heard the Regan quote, I didn’t know it was about medicare, I just started thinking about all the freedoms that Bushco and “Fatherland security” took from us, and said - “what a stupid quote to have left us with!”
I also like the fact that Sarah, once a Catholic, didn’t seem to even know that Reagan cribbed the line “Shining City on a Hill” from St. Augustine via the “creditted” Pilgrim, John Winthrop. So she not only borrowed but then plagiarised from a a tertiary source that she should have known. Perhaps she did it might have been a stealthy shout out to the religious right, as Winthrop was a sort of a “born again”, and so, in a manner of speaking, was also (naughty Zoroastrian -Iranian- sympathizer who saw God later in life).
But St. Augustine is generally thought to be referring to a communitarian vision of what religious responsibilities were to be. It wasn’t the free-market independence that Palin espoused in the debate…rather it is more like the Norwegian-style socialism that Alaska actually has.
