If he keeps this up, even David Broder may notice.
Let the record reflect that Barack Obama made the approach to John McCain tonight…
He walked over to where McCain was chatting with Republican Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida and Independent Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut. And he stretched out his arm and offered his hand to McCain.
McCain shook it, but with a “go away” look that no one could miss. He tried his best not to even look at Obama.
Yes, it is a theme.
But then, classy is…as classy has always done, say 1974:
"I’m going to the Middle East," Dramesi says. "Turkey, Kuwait, Lebanon, Iran."
"Why are you going to the Middle East?" McCain asks, dismissively.
"It’s a place we’re probably going to have some problems," Dramesi says.
"Why? Where are you going to, John?"
"Oh, I’m going to Rio."
"What the hell are you going to Rio for?"
McCain, a married father of three, shrugs.
"I got a better chance of getting laid."

About Firedoglake
Hey Attaturk.
Thanks for the post. The Rolling Stone story does a nice job of painting the picture that proves McCain will be just more of the same.
McKeatingFive and Junior: Two chips off the old block.
OT, but I wanted to get this video visualization of Palin’s Supreme Court non-answer out far and wide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnUtmmb-yO8
It did not take the Rolling Stone piece to derail mccain’s run for the White House. His baggage and his personality coupled with across the board disgust and despair with the economic death spiral have done it. It is at this point anecdotal, however, I can not find a voter here in central Texas that will admit a preference for mccain. He has even managed to lose the hardcore ditto heads. As near as I can figure it appears folks are just plain feed up with emotionally arrested, disingenuous punks in positions of authority. Another cheneyesque bully at the helm? Not. Gonna. Happen. And make no mistake, mccain is a punk and a bully whose emotional and social development stopped the first time he had to shower with the other kids in the 7th grade.
1,782 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Attaturk and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
I am convinced that the oligarchy doesn’t want to control the White House for the next 12 years ‘cuz the shit that hasta be cleaned up is not gunna be easy and is gunna leave a lot a folks dirty in the cleanin’ up…and I don’t think there is any love lost by the ruling elite for Crazy John…as a matter of fact I think they annointed ‘im to get ‘im out of their hair for good and make it as painful an exit as possible.
This is the end of the Republican Party as we have known it since 1858…I think that the fascists are gunna rise up behind a “libertarian” know-nothing movement started by Ron Paul and it will have an out of the closet, real fascist public face.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITOON BUT DON’T FIRE UNTIL THEY STOP SHOOTIN EACH OTHER!!
I still want to know what was in the Stone article besides the details of his behavior after the Forrestall fire?
that’s my Flamethrower, I’ve been saying for months that they set him up like a T-ball coach does.
Morning all. Of course in obama the corporatocracy have another Powell. He will do the bidding of the bosses just as he has been doing with Choice, Gun Control, Fisa and now the trillion $ golden parachute for the bushies.
Citizen Raven
Heyy there Freebird, I think that the bastards are gunna play socrched earth in opposition for the next 12 years until our kids have worked their asses off ta get money back inta the economy and treasury and then they’re gunna make another run at the cash…and the political party they ride back ta power is gunna be clearly ANTI-democratic…Ron Paul’s got a ton a cash and ken get on the ballot anyplace now…this is the future of [politics in the USA, fascism comes outta the closet.
Citizen nomolos:
Jesus, with friends like you poor Obama doesn’t need cancer…but really now, this guy is a lot smarter’n any 3 of us out here in the left ether with Jimmi Hendrixx…his intellegence and experience inform his values and his politics are jest a set of tactics ta enforce his values. This guy will go as far toward restorin’ some kinda representative social politics in this country as the majorities we give ‘im will allow.
Don’t piss in yer own shoes there, Brother nomolos.
I had to get out of here last night. Fuckers just hammerin Obama like he was not going to vote for the bill.
It took the Senate just one day to expand the 700billion to over 800billion…. now that is truly saving us money. WTF do they think we are fucking idiots? We can only hope that the House members do the right thing and tell the bushies, NO and NO again to your golden parachute. Spending bills are supposed to be promulgated in the House and one can see why. In the Senate there are fewer politicians to pay off, most of them are deep in the world of bribes anyway, so it is a lot easier to get “the most deliberative body in the whole world” to do the bidding of the corporate masters. Only 25% of the senate said no fucking way to the “bail out” while the others said “gimme the money”. Some Senators claim that there are tax breaks for the middle class included so the 800 bill can’t be all bad. Bull twadddle. What they “give” with the left hand is taken away with the right. 3 card monte is a pikers game against this con.
The unmistakable pattern of a life of “fuck everybody and anybody as long as I get what I want”.
do they think we are fucking idiots
you have to ask that?
You didn’t know that?
Brother Raven:
I’m old, white slow, male and Norwegian (mostly) and I only got three brain cellz left but I am NOT stupid…if any of these leftest wanna-bees have the chops ta put themselves in Obama’s shoes and get a hit of his life experience and then want ta bad mouth ‘im for not bein’ ideologically “pure” they’d be living examples of why the left in this country commits hari-kari every generation er two.
I grew up in a socialist home, and my Grampa Ole was a commie organizer in lumber camps in northern Minnesota…I also spent some good years studyin’ American history and fightin’ with the closet Stalinists who inherited the battlefield after 1972…so I don’t have any time for the professional citizens who wear their cynicism on their shoulders like a Division battle patch.
No Obama is NOT the enemy here folks…and he is gunna make life ,iseable for the fascists if we give ‘im the ammunition.
Well just maybe “middle america” will see the the bastards now. For the last 30+ years they have been winning elections and yet somehow avoiding being identified as fascists.
roger that
as I have said, my people came from Stevanger
I peeked in last night, and tiptoed out without saying a word.. Oh, good morning!
P.S. He’s gunna make life MISERABLE for the fascists…
I hear ya.
What I loved was all the “this is the last straw”. . .after I vote for Obama this time. What weak shit.
Tried and true socialist here also and my parents, all of us growing up in Europe and no, I am not giving up on my ideals and am not willing to accept any “liberal lite” as my saviour. It is interesting that you would “hang your hat” on obama. I still find him two gate posts short of a gate and until he stops his mantra of “we will deal with this later” I will think of him as I do of all “manana” politicians which is call me when you get some balls.
http://ihasahotdog.com/2008/10…..g-monkeys/
Oh, Obama is running as a socialist? I guess Mc Cain is right.
Good Morning, I didn’t even peek in. How’s Savannah? They are now saying that the gas crisis should let up next week here.
Citizen nomolos:
No, I don’t “hang my hat” on ABNY
Things looked better over there on the news last night.
McCain is running as the candidate that reaches across the aisle. He’s also running as the candidate who’s going to cut taxes by 3 trillion and balance the budget.
From time to time I’ve been known to refer to Savannah as “The Big Sleepy,” and that pretty much sums it up recently. Other than the prices going through the roof after Ike hit the refineries we haven’t really had shortages here that I’ve seen. Which baffles me somewhat, because we have just as many idiots topping off their tanks when they’re 3/4 full… I have no idea what’s going on in the places where there isn’t any gas.
ABNY?
Sonny came back from Europe and is now holding daily prayer sessions, I assume.

Good morning, pups. It’s Cohen and Kristof today. Roger Cohen considers “Nixon, Bush, Palin” and says the lesson of the last eight years is this: When power is a a passport to gamble, people can end up seriously broke or seriously dead. Does America want to roll the dice again? Oh, Lordy, I hope not… Mr. Kristof says we need to “Save the Fat Cats,” because by passing the bailout bill, America will avoid enduring a “lost decade” similar to the one that Japan faced after failing to respond decisively to its banking crisis.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got apple turnovers this morning. I hope everyone has enough popcorn and the beverages of your choice for this evening’s debate. I’ll miss out on the live blogging [sniff] because we have an out of town guest arriving this afternoon, but he’s going to be greeted with “Tony, here’s your dinner. Don’t dawdle over it — we’ve got a debate to watch.” Gracious Southern hospitality at its VERY best, dontcha think? Have a great day.
Folks don’t get listened to in this country as evidenced by the senate vote and the house one coming up on Friday.
Perhaps being broke, jobless, homeless, will inspire them to vote and perhaps take to the streets… finally and take back their country.
They called faxed and phoned to no avail… so let’s see if this is a fire under their asses so this is about the people as Obi claims.
I’d like to see some demonstrations organized before the election to fire up the people or even on election day.
Citizen nonolos:
No I don’t “hang my hat” on any politician…I learned from my Gampa, my father, reading Marx and the greatest thinkers in the modern world, the American Enlightenment founders, that it is all about the struggle, it’s NOT about ideological or political purity, it’s about advancin’ the IDEA of democracy and makin’ the world safe for children and other living things…we are all “fellow travelers” and what you need to do here Brother nomolos is remember that the struggle is also about knowin who the enemy is and makin’ sure that it ain’t YOU.
Oh, my. Michael Berube is back, and he’s not in love with Sarah.
I say preserve the fat cats in state prisons for 15 yrs… where they can think about what to do when they get out and how life will be in a half way house when they are looking for a job with a record. Ya know like the cons sent away for selling marijuana.
Roger Cohen is scared and rightly so. A Palin/McCain presidency could doom us all.
Mornin’, gang -
Obama now has his own channel (#73) on DISH sat. Daymn! I forkin’ love it! Talk about a campaign that thinks outside the box.
ROTFLMAO
It’s an idea I don’t even give words to, lest the words give the idea power…
Marion, Thank you for the link to Michael Berube and it’s nice to have him writing on his blog again.
Saw someplace on the idjit box yesterday that y’all had a station charging $8.00+/gal. Any truth to that?
JPL9 -
#42’s for you. Talk about slow loads wrt ”reply” function…..spit!
Morning all. Big day in the ‘hood yesterday. B.J. Clinton was right up the road a bit at UCF. They had him scheduled to speak at the old arena there that holds 2,000. They got over 3,000 RSVPs so they moved him outside an 5,000 showed up (including 20 who fainted). Didn’t go. Had to work. Then, my CongressassholeTom Feeney had a townhall meeting in my development. Got home from work too late. That got zero coverage. I guess there were just too many non-developments in the Caylee Anthony case to cover. Obama and Biden gotta do this more often. This area and this county in particular is one of the most important in the country. Voting patterns in FL are pretty established. My county, Bush & Kerry basically tied (Bush won by less than 1,000). there have been 44,000 new registrations and 75% are declared Democrats. there is a very good argument that if Barack & Joe are gonna win FL, they’ll have to win it here. If they win FL, I would think it’s lights out.
I have not heard about the $8.00 a gallon gas price and the average price is around 4. There are more stations opening so the gas lines should be shorter. The lines here were far worse that anything that I have seen and that includes the Saudi embargo.
raven – please, can’t we disagree without you calling me a “fucker” ?
Thanks for the post. MSNBC carried some of Clinton’s speech.
dear citizen norske – i hope like hell you are right and i am wrong. but does our disagreement have to mean that you call me a “living examples of why the left in this country commits hari-kari every generation er two.” ?
i beg that we continue as allies, even while we disagree.
Wow – great post (Rolling Stone article worth forwarding to everyone). Thanks! Also, thanks Marion for Michael Berube’s article. Why I visit FDL…
Citizen selise:
I think that Brother Raven gets a bit ornry when he feels that we’re forgettin’ who the enemy is …don’t take it personally, shrug it off if it doesn’t hit the mark.
Timothy Egan has a piece on The Legacy of W. Ouch.
Thanks,
And now I will officially whine for diggs.
Yesterday, I receive not a one.
I’m just pathetic that way…
I’m off to apply my nose to the grindstone. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the servers will be able to find FDL again, as they seemed to yesterday afternoon.
dear citizen norske – but we disagree on who the enemy is. i’ve come to think it’s the leadership of both parties. maybe i’m completely wrong in that, but i can’t just ignore my own judgment. the best i can hope to do is to improve it.
Loving the caption under the photo, Attaturk! Great post. Well, Johnny doesn’t like anyone but himself, his family, and Sarah Palin’s boobs & ass at this point.
Morning, folks. For my money, the best line in the Rolling Stones article is the one where the writer compares McCain to Chimpy McFlightsuit and says something like(I don’t have the exact quote at hand here)that the only difference between them in terms of temperament, intelligence, behavior or worldview is…that actually W. was a better pilot. Now THAT’s saying something.
Citizen selise:
I guess that I am a little older than Raven so I don’t get as worked up as I used to at those who might be shootin’ up their ammo without prioritizin’ the targets. I hope you read what I say as a statement from my experience and not as a personal attack…if you think that your drive for ideological purity doesn’t isolate and alienate you from your commrads in the struggle then so be it. This is a struggle first and formost against evil and undemocratic forces. Our side is made up of many and they don’t all share the same experience , history or ideology…indeed, I don’t wannem to!
It’s all about the struggle, ya gotta have a shit detector, if Obama turns out ta be a fascist enabler, then we cast ‘im out and get on to the next battle.
You can read it online. I read it, printed it, passed it around.

The 1st American Revolution was to overthrow the tyranny of a foreign power. The 2nd American Revolution will be to overthrow the tyranny of homegrown plutocrats.
How about a paid Demonstration? There may one tonite against Biden. We have seen that it is all about the money (and fossil fuel). The Crazy McCain Campaign is also organizing demonstrations. Frat rats will be paid to campaign for the Straight Talk and Money Express. This apparently has been done before.
Norske, my grandmother was 2nd generation Norwegian and let me tell you…she had that fire in the belly just like you do! Even at the age of 93 as she laid on her death bed a couple months after 9/11 happened, she was still spitting and sputtering about the republicans, the Bush family, and told me not to trust a damn thing coming out of any of them!
I miss her. She would be so thrilled with what liberals/progressives have done since 9/11. She saw a very dark scary Hitler-like future for our country and if she knew what we’ve done, she would have been proud. Even the small things, such as, sending a contribution to Planned Parenthood in care of Sarah Palin knowing Sarah would get a note from Planned Parenthood saying ‘thank you’! I’m serious. My grandmother would have loved how we’ve made the right wingers of America itchy all these years!
When my grandmother died, my mother laid all of her belongings out on her bed (she didn’t have much) for the family to go through to take what they wanted. What did I take? Her picture of John F. Kennedy she had since the day he was gunned down by the right wingers of America and some jewelry with fake red, white, and blue stones, because that is exactly who she was: A GREAT BLUE PATRIOT. ;-)
I left last night too. Just couldn’t take a night of Obama bashing. I’m not saying anyone was wrong, but I need hope or I’ll slide into a funk that I may never recover from. When Kerry lost (or didn’t lose) I was so freeking mad, depressed, scared….whatever, it was awhile before I even had any fight left in me.
i had been reading the transcripts but i’ve herard so much about it now i’m watching the footage of the palin/couric interviews. oh, christ. That said, i think she’ll do well tonight. the format is much better for her. some think that since she’ll be given more time to answer and speak, she’ll fuck up. i hope sp, but i don’t expect that. like that guy in alaska who debated her said, she’s great at the gebneralities. plus she’ll probably attack a bit. she couldn’t attack cherlie or katie. as i understand there will be very litle chance for interaction between the candidates and unless ifill agressively follows up, she’ll just spout the talking points. she can handle that. the big question for me is whether people have such low expectations of her that if she’s merely competent she’ll be praised to high heaven as “ready” and dispelling all the concerns about her. then again, no matter what happens, in the view of many , she’s damaged goods.
seems they were out at UCF yesterday for clinton’s speech.
About 25 members of the conservative group Knights for McCain also showed up at the rally and carried John McCain/Sarah Palin signs. Several shouting matches ensued between their group and Obama supporters.
“I came out to show that not the whole campus is in love with Obama,” said Sarah Lucenegro, a member of Knights for McCain. “I’m not intimidated. I feel confident that I’m making the right educated decision.”
( solai )
When Kerry lost (or didn’t lose) I was so freeking mad, depressed, scared….
and rightly so. me too. my candidates have lost elections plenty of times and I’ve been disappointed but 2004 was different. it depressed the hell out of me. i almost cried watching Kerry’s concession speech the next day.
The situation is such that the system forced us to have two parties which are now serving the interest of capital and not the interests of the workers or the people.
We have a legacy or an illusion of two parties, one representing capital and the other representing the working class, but that is hardly what we have now.
Family values have been injected into politics and the right has grabbed these as organizing principles to get “support” from working class or joe sixpack as they call them. The effect is that these people provide support for a party which legislates continually against their interests.
The democrats, although coming from a position of strong worker advocacy has now been corrupted by the influence of money, lobbyists and the meme of the American Dream – or in Bush’s words “an ownership society”. This false and hollow idea has moved them to support the schemes of capital to enslave the working class to credit and the idea of working to own property and consume. They support the paternal notion that capital will take care of workers, that trickle down is the way it works and so they now nop longer represent the workers, but are just another mouthpiece for capital.
Progressive who support “people”, their rights etc. have no party to turn to, only a few in the far left wing of the democratic party and one socialist Bernie Saunders.
The fact is we have two right wing parties, one with fundies and family values nut cases and the other with corporate shills for trickle down economics. That was proven very clearly last night, when the millionaires voted THEIR interest and not the people’s.
I agree! Nothing worse than to have a team who wants to win when suddenly one person stands up and says, “We suck big time!”. Personally, I feed off the excitement of people in my life and online. It’s the only thing that gets me through the days. Of course, some days are difficult to get through, but I manage too because of those people who want to plow forward!
I was raised with the idea you trust someone first until they give you a reason not to. If Obama gets in and shows us something completely different than what we thought, then we’ll pounce, but until then, I see him as a beacon of light and because the right wingers are pissed and are in disarray, Obama has already done good in my book!
Great stuff.

More great stuff. You on your game this morning.
When Bush won, I told everyone that he would bring this country to its knees. But not even I imagined the depths he would take us to.
anybody think palin’s already blown it no matter what she does tonight?
I have read it, that was not my point.
Norske,
We don’t have much choice here and holding his feet to the fire is all we can do. No progressive with sound ideas will be taken seriously as evidenced by how Kucinich and Saundcers are treated. They can’t even get a decent debate on their ideas going. Thankfully, the internets are spreading their views.
Most progressives, including Selise and myself will hold our noses and vote for dems. But we still need to rail against them in the blogs and remind people that that dem behavior is not only not progressive, but it is more republican than it should or need be. We have two republican parties now.
But the views of left thinking have been so trashed by the media that there isn’t even a word to use to describe someone on the left which is not toxic. They trashed liberal, now they are doing the same to progressive… communist is treason…. socialist is unamerican. Heck we don’t even have a label which is not toxic. The only ones that wash are capitalism free market ones. Conservative has become a “good” think… looking back to the era of the robber barrons. WOW
Hang on to those ideals and do not accept mediocrity as salvation. When obama is finally shown not to be the saviour on a big white stallion but rather an interesting man on a beaten down nag those that want to can vote for him and those that want real change can put all their energies into promoting progressive candidates and by choosing a “none of the above corporate candidates” in the president stakes. Oh and take the attacks from Raven by considering the source.
Brighter subject: tonight’s debate. I have a feeling Palin’s memorizing some zingers. But Biden’s a really sharp guy and witty as hell. Can’t wait. I’m stopping off today to pick up a bottle of wine and some munchies. Looking forward to watching it for the drama.
The source is right here.
I’m looking forward to it too. Alot. I’m really concerned that it won’t be hard at all fro palin to do well enough to beat exepctations and even be declared the winner and they’ll use that as proof that the media was out to get her and that’s the only reason she’s been characterized as an ignorant, inarticulate lightweight.
I am going to tell you this one more time. I have nothing to say to you. I have not responded to any of your posts and do not intend to. If you think a general statement I made is directed at you that is just too bad.
For all the credit Palin has been given, she’s not someone who can think on her feet. She couldn’t name some newspapers that would make her seem well-informed? Who couldn’t do that? Even if it was a lie, she should have been able to rattle off a list.
Sorry, Raven, for missing your point. Now that I understand what you were saying, you’re absolutely right. That article needs more exposure.
Time to dive into morning swim….
dear citizen norske – maybe we have a very different understanding of what is ideological purity. obama can advocate for more war, a police state and now what looks like outright theft on behalf of wall street – but if i pay attention and call it as i see it, i’m guilty of ideological purity?
it’s ok to condemn me (call me a fucker or one of the “living examples of why the left in this country commits hari-kari every generation er two.”) because i disagree? what is that if not a demand for ideological purity? if you think i’m wrong, why not try to help me see the errors in my thinking instead?
why should dissent have to isolate or alienate anyone? should we allow a difference of opinion about a politician to divide us? or can allies disagree about many things and still be allies?
what seems so surprising to me is that you caught a lot of grief here about your views re senator clinton from people who did not share them. how is it any different when i have negative views about a politician that you do not share?
Selise, we’re not saying you can’t have that opinion of Barack, but what we are saying is every time the popular liberal blogs start going after their own, it gives the right wingers who lurk fuel against us and Barack. Trust me when I say the right wing neck drooling trolls who come to my blog to insult me are doing just that: THEY CAN’T THINK FOR THEMSELVES, SO THEY LOOK FOR ANY WEAKNESS IN US TO SUPPORT THEIR POSITION. In other words, we are doing their work for them. Let them be the ones to do the research about Barack or use their lies/smears against him and we will use it once again to prove how pathetic the right wing has become.
That said…
Liberals/progressives are not sheep. We will hold Barack’s feet to the fire when he gets in office if he decides he wants to be the next George Bush. It’s a given we will pounce. But! If we find out he was staying in the middle before he got elected and then on day one starts redeploying our soldiers out of Iraq, then we can sigh some relief, but will take each day as it comes.
There is a revolution going on if you hadn’t noticed. Americans of all political parties are evolving together. Some might think it’s a ‘crap sandwich’ at the moment, but the next 4 years are going to be key, because after 8 years of blatant fascism, we know this is not what we want to ever see again in our lifetimes! We are evolving as a nation: fascism off the list. check.
Okay, going to work along with the rest of the schmucks of America. LOL It’s all in your attitude, Selise! You have a good one by the way. ;-)
Honesty, even if it is not “popular” is the best policy. obama is full of “later, later, later” just like bushy was in 2000 and we saw what we got. obama is refusing to take a stand on ANYTHING and is proving to be a sop of the DLC (read republican). If the RWNFs feel like repeating that obama is republican lite because it is written here then so be it. It is still the damn truth. So far “change” has been shown to just be more of the same and I am not going to don my rose coloured glasses just to pretend that it is not.
consider the source
i think the truth, as well as we can discern it, is on our side. the more we openly discuss what is happening, the better. ymmv.
you made a general statement about a group of people – a group of which i’m a member. to me, absent any other information, that means i was one of those to whom your comment was directed. if that’s not the case, i’m glad to know it but i don’t understand it.
I mostly just read on this and other sites and form my own opinions, but I just wanted to jump in and say I agree with every word you wrote. Thanks!
