Wow! For some reason, I would not have thought Jane Pauley would be a Dem! Glad to hear it! I heard or read that Diedre Hall will be campaigning for Obama soon or already is now. Also, Days is the only soap I watch, so I was wondering if any other soaps are pushing going green. They are talking frequently about main characters making their restaurants green, and even converting their homes to green. Of course, last year or so, Sami had a green wedding! I think it’s commendable!

I would like either candidate to be asked to explain their opponent’s position on any issue and then identify the ways in which his or hers own position differs from that of the opponent. That might move it beyond the parrot stage.

Well there are more than expectations involved here…there is also a very important strategic element that Palin-McCain has to make. Just what “audience” is she going to reach out to in this debate.

Is she going to try and “moderate” her positions on issues like abortion, homosexuality, creationism etc. so that she sounds sane. She tried to do that in and stumbled repeatedly. Of course, Couric and her audience are likely to be moderate/liberal (it’s not Fox). Couric didn’t do a great job following up those questions. For example, on the abortion issue Couric should have asked if Palin really ONLY believed in using moral suasion (rather than LEGAL RESTRICTIONS) to change the decision-making of women seeking abortion, even after rape and incest, then how would her position differ from PRO-CHOICE advocates that believe women should have the right to safe and legal abortions, but that they have the CHOICE. And it should be pointed out that Roe v. Wade doesn’t allow a woman “carte blanche” to obtain an abortion…it provides a woman the right to obtain one that is medically safe (in consultation with a doctor). Palin seems to want to eliminate the right to safe abortions.

And Couric should have asked Palin, after stating her gay friend made a “choice” that she (Palin) wouldn’t have made should have asked “So when did you make your choice to be heterosexual? Did you once consider being a lesbian because you had feelings toward other women?”

Palin could play to social conservatives, or deflate their enthusiasm as a “sell out”. If she says stuff like “My position on these social issues have been distorted and I actually disagree with many on the right about these issues.” she could torpedo her strongest, and sole remaining, support. She could be viewed as a Harriet Miers.

So if she tries to play to the “middle” she might still come off looking “okay” to most viewers because of the lowered expectations…and lose the right-wingers.

Some pollster last night was saying women are usually the swing voters. Joe Biden can win by focusing on women’s issues, not attacking Palin. He has the track record.

Palin is going to do her best as to pose as the plucky gal.

It makes sense for Biden to stay away from her, but I bet she’s going to attack him, which will make that hard.

Yes, but I think he can anticipate her style of attack which is to paint him as a big bad boy. He can easily handle it by saying what he has said on the road that Ms. Palin has to be able to take the same heat as Obama, and her running mate, etc. He can also point to support of all women to totally defuse that kind of attack.

I think he’ll be ready for age attacks, too. She’ll pose as the fresh face with new ideas. He can deflect with Hey, we’ve had eight years of your kind of “new” ideas of dismantling the constitution (tying her & Mccain to bush) and he can we got a guy with better ideas.

Sadly “feminist” carries a lot of misconstrued meaning. If Joe gets asked the question he should say simply that he and Jill has always supported equality of rights and opportunities for women (which is actually “feminism”) and then raise the Ledbetter case…and Clinton…and the fact that women make up 40% of the work force and that denying them access to fair wages during an economic crisis is simply UNAMERICAN. He can then talk about the absurdity of denying women insurance coverage for contraception…while covering men for their Viagra as an example of why private insurance companies are often incapable of making decisions based not on the needs of their clients, but solely on the basis of their profits! Then spin to why John McCain’s ideas about booting millions of Americans off of their group insurance plans to seek individual plans is simply a ridiculous idea!
