If Palin, as she is expected to do, goes into a full blown attack...Biden must resist doing the one thing that comes so naturally to him.
He can't smile.
As Biden likes to say on the stump, he "literally, literally" cannot flash the famous Biden wall of teeth, that reflexive wide-angle grin....
Holy crock o' shite. Biden paid good money for that tooth bleach -- he'll flash his pearly whites at some point.
THAT is the win or lose point for Palin?!?
"Biden smiled. Did you get the camera on that?!? It's Palinpalooza now, baby! Wait, was it only a smirk...run that tape back..."
Good lord. We've survived Dan Quayle's "potatoe" moment; George H.W. Bush, supermarket scanner savant; Hillary Clinton's battle with the cappuccino machine; and I haven't even gotten to Zippy the Wonder Biker. (all YouTubes.)
But the press keep helping lower the bar for poor wittle Sarah?
She's running for Vice President of the United States, for cripes sake. Must we endure the same underselling job the GOP did for Bush without questioning it? Look where that got us. Honestly, after the Gibson and Couric interviews, I'm not sure she's met a minimal job competency requirement. And I'm not alone. (YouTube)
Stop lowballing her on-camera manipulative abilities. We all suffer for it. Prior opponents say she's a master debater. She beat a sitting governor. Her appeal is strong among "have a beer with" types, with her folksy filibuster routine down pat.
Further, have you fricking met Joe "Run At The Mouth" Biden? Because it ain't exactly a cakewalk for him to debate cleanly. Between the gaffes, the inanity, and the blather?
Ugh. I'm going to start mainlining espresso now...

Good morning Christy!
Gee, You’ve been busy. Easy on the espresso.
I’m really sorry to have to say this but the more I watch Sarah Palin the more I regret that women got the vote.
Morning — two cups of coffee on a cool morning here. I may have to turn on the heater. Brrrrr….
Oh, and I forgot to mention — do put down liquids before watching any of the above YouTubes. Your keyboard and monitor will thank you later…
Nice Post Christy. Sorta OT: and I hate to link to her but Kathleen Parker is experiencing first hand what Wing Nuttia is all about.
palin keeps on writing SNL skits. When the skits are just showing the reality, the repugs have a real problem. To have joke as a VP pick before the election puts the election into the dem column to lose if they decide not to want it.
Hate to admit this but may not watch the debate live. The McCain campaign is becoming so painfully farcical, cannot imagine what they have cooked up for Palin’s performance.
Maybe I’ll catch the Pitt-South FL game live and just review the Tivo’d high(or low)lights of the debate.
Don’t ya just love it when that happens
Morning, Christy - it’s sunny this morning, but it’s supposed to start raining and get cold here today. Goodbye to summer…
and oh, yeah. All I want for Biden to do is answer the questions and play it straight and treat Palin like any other political adversary. He should hold her to the same standards of experience, knowledge and background that anyone else who presumes to run for the VP slot should have to be held to. By the way, has Katie asked her yet what she thinks the job is all about? I mean, seriously, does she know what she’s going to have to do as the VP, besides giving Moose field dressing demos and appearing folksy?
Christy, OT request: Please call out to bombard the House switchboard AND mail servers to demand that the House NOT pass any Senate bill that contains more tax cuts for corporations or the wealthy in any other guise. They must also be required to not pass any bill with more deregulation in it.
Those that brung us to this dance must PAY for the dance. That means the corporate criminals and banker bastards. Period.
thanks for the warning Christy ! . . . you dear soft fragile little thing
too damn funny!
Brrr…heater?
You lucky dog. It’s been so hot here. Was still 80 when I got up. A/C running two nights in a row. But, with all the other crap going on, it’s good to stay cool.
PS - I like Joe. I like his smile. Some people around here - not meaning you, Christy — should try it sometime. *g*
fyi - three great diaries at oxdown on the economic crisis and the sellout bailout legislation
from JimWhite: “Bernie Sanders to Henry Paulson and the rest of the rich: “You broke it, you pay for it.”
from Hugh: “The compromise bill was the Paulson plan“
and DBaker has just put up a must read: “Bill Clinton defends Phil Gramm“:
Ian has something coming up on that in a little bit.
No, he’ll have to resist “ROTFL” like the rest of us will be. SNL - please take copious notes.
I wont watch the debate either, though my wife and I will take a glance, now and again, at the debate to get a feel about what sort of SNL fodder Palin produces.
I mean, honestly, “don’t smile”?!? That’s the humongous mistake Biden just can’t make during the debate?
“Hello, press? Your bus is leaving…”
Hate to break this to you, but Kathleen Parker IS what wingnuttia is all about. All on her own. *g* (Although if Palin truly has lost Kathleen Parker, and it’s not just a feint for Parker to then come back after the debate and say “wow, she was amazing and really won me back, yeppers!” — then Palin has jumped about 10 sharks.)
have we passed from the sublime to the ridiculous yet……..methinks yea
Morning Christy,
I may watch the debate without my computer tonight.
It’ll be tough but after the last debate experience…
that voice, with the folksy fake twang, puts me over the edge…no can do,but if yall blog it,got a new Chardonay
I don’t think we have to worry about him listening to the press, though, do you?
There’s a line from a hymn that I like…
No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I’m clinging,
Since love is lord of heaven and earth,
How can I keep from singing?
*
Joe can’t stop from smiling, I think.
the “diva of wingnuttia” MalKKKin (H/T Digby) is all over Ifill this morning. she even went as far to say “Whenever Ifil is criticized she plays the RACISM card” someone get out the barff bags. They are screaming from the rafters today. MalKKKin is “over hyperventilating”
Thanks Christy.
digg
You mean, Condi Rice’s best gal pal, Gwen Ifill is in the dog house with Malkin, the racially sensitive gal that she is? Oh, what a shocker. Anything to work the refs, I suppose…
So is it true that Ifil is coming out with a book on Obama?
I hear that voice and think Fargo and SNL. Can’t get past that.
Her voice actually makes me cringe even more than Bush’s voice.
That is what the buzz is…but of course they don’t tell you it is basically a “histrionic” view of how African Americans have broken into the political scene.
It’s on a number of emerging black politicians as I understand it, and it’s due out, I believe, in January.
Governor Kaine gets in a keeper -
I’m mainlining my French Roast here…
I think it’s a mistake to underestimate Palin in a debate where she can sprinkle her “values” and generalities into her run-on sentences. She will throw in plenty of snarky attack statements, too. I actually feel sorry for Biden to have to go up against this mean-spirited pittbull that plays the victim woman role very well! It puts him on the defense before the debate has begun.
You’re kidding! Jesus, there is no way for her to be a truly fair and objective moderator. If it is a positive book, then it makes her out to be Brokaw only for Obama. If it is negative, then it slants her the other way.
Can’t these people understand what “conflict of interest” means?
Could Biden get away with an approach where, for a couple of the most outlandish responses from Palin, he just says something to the effect of:
“Did you hear what she just said? The question was xxx and she wants us to believe yyy? What we really need to do is zzz because yyy will only make the situation worse.”
Maybe with just a bit of a smile and slight shake of the head. Of course, someone will need to sneeze just then to cover up the loud “Horse sh*t” coming from McCain sitting in the audience…
Me too! Couldn’t agree more and that by itself is enough of a reason for me to vote Obama/Biden.
Yes Christy…she is even screaming that she wrote TWO…TWO Op-Ed’s…..wow she is incredible ain’t she???
Thats standard procedure for me there is a lot of Snark here.
Morning brief:
Imus: you da man
Lou Dobbs: no, you da man
Gerk.
There went breakfast….
Her voice is the single reason I cannot/ will not watch the debate. Hearing it cannot be good for my health.
It’s hard enough to watch her gaffes on YouTube.
I don’t know anything about Parker really except what people have been posting here but George F. Will has said publicly that Palin is not qualified. I don’t believe he would saying that unless he truly means it.
Fargo denies that twang.
I can’t wait for the debate, Bidens gaffes and Palins clueless answers should make good comedy.
Get out the popcorn!
So Biden is damned no matter what. If he attacks, he’s “sexist”. If the counterattacks, he is “beating up on the little lady…and sexist”. If he stays “above the fray” he’s toast.
So the only way for him to win and Palin to continue losing is for Palin to drop the ball on questions, particularly on the followup…but only by the moderator.
Palin’s debate prep - Onion-style:

I acknowledge the cringe factor
that said, I strongly recommend y’all watch CNN with the sound off - you can still follow their audience response gadget which proved highly entertaining and damn near addictive at chez cbl :D
She sounds almost sane, and coherent? Normally she is as logical as Sarah Palin everything is good for the GOP.
That is such a wonderful song……was listening to it this morning on the new Nano. How very odd you should mention it……….
Does anyone actually believe that ANY of these conservatives actually would NOT do a complete 180 if Palin simply managed to do mediocre in the debate? If she simply avoids committing another gaff then I expect Will and the rest to “think about it long and hard” (about 2 seconds) and change their tune.
lower the bar for poor wittle Sarah?
from the article:
I guess I’m one cold dame, because while Palin provokes many unpleasant emotions in me, I just can’t seem to summon pity, affection or remorse.
Me too.
(although I hate being referred to as a “dame”: - I prefer “great old broad”)
Thanks for the heads up… will set the Tivo to CNN. I watched MSNBC last Friday night so I missed seeing that scroll.
sidenote…Obama is up in the reTHUGlican rassmussen poll to 51% for the first time(McSame 45%) , maybe that is also why wingnutville is screaming everywhere. If rassmussen has him up that high imagine the REAL number

No. This has been another edition of…
BTW Oxdown is acting squirrely and not listing posts in its table of contents. So you can post and see your post virtually disappear since no one will know it is there. This is what happened to a post I put up last night: “The compromise bill was the Paulson plan.”
http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diary/338
It would be to all intents and purposes gone if I hadn’t put the address in a comment last night.
Well, in the Senate this evening, we will be passing from the subprime to the ridiculous.
yup a set up
This neat little piece of technology loaded with lots of songs like that may be one of two things (the other being the Lake) standing between me and insanity for the next few weeks. :-)
If Palin does badly in the debates, it will be blamed on witchcraft and, of course, those pesky python spirits.
eggselent Hugh!…you/Hugh…not them congresscritters
Here’s a link for that song, The Main Street Singers, by the way.

left you a comment downstairs
I’ve been playing mine a lot lately, too. I have a lovely Rostropovich playing Bach’s cello concertos collection that has been getting a lot of air time here…
BTW, the September unemployment rate will be published Friday at 8:30 am ET. It’s likely to be a pessimistic report. My prognostication is not based on any inside info, just years of watching how these economic data play out during business cycles. In any event, just wait & see how pols of both parties use that report to scare the sh*t out of us, regardless of whether bailout has been passed or not.
i think the problem is with the way it’s organized - there is a front page, but that doesn’t include most of the diaries. i’ve been using this link instead of the front page, as it includes all the diaries:
http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diaries/
unfortunately the rss feed for that url has been redirected back to the front page feed url, i’ll look around later and see if i can find one that works correctly.
NPR has an interview with McCain flailing like crazy to defend Palin’s competence. Beyond pathetic.
It’s definitely meant to preemptively cry foul over the expected outcome of the debate, and the story definitely comes from a ridiculously biased source (Malkin) BUT: there can still be an interesting discussion about this, I think. Even if the book is completely anti-Obama, she still benefits from his getting elected since he’ll be a hotter topic.
Of course, there’s a giant logical leap between her writing a book and her somehow influencing the debate.
Just think it’s an interesting topic that shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand just because of the source.
I have not seen your diary at all I will look now. My 2nd diary is sometimes at Oxdown sometimes not?
http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diary/341
we haven’t seen dmac in weeks - since she got hi-speed Internet access!
Dial-up therefore no utube but thankee kindly.
The theory of course is that if the put some tax-cut lipstick on Paulson’s pig, Texas hard-core conservatives will be so thrilled that twelve of them will come over to the other side and vote for the Fascist measure. God, I hope they are wrong.
I can only hope that Palin she goes overboard with her mean-spirited snarky statements and people see her for what she is: a Heather. It might play well with their base, but I don’t think moderates will like it. Especially if Biden doesn’t play into her games.
Bach is good for the soul……and anything else that ails ya. *g*
I think they are trying to game Ifill to keep her from asking follow-up questions and holding Palin to the topic if she spouts some inane crapola. They don’t want Ifill calling bullshit — they want to force Biden to have to do it all on his own the whole debate.
What about Dr Kirk and punaise
let’s add rw cole to that list.
Kirk’s been out of town. And I recall punaise talking about things being very busy at the moment…
Exactly! I hope Ifill surprises me, but I’m not counting on it.
About the Oxdown diary quirks,
why don’t you put a note here for Ari
http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diary/336
She swung by here just the other day.
I think it will discourage posting to Oxdown if people see (or rather don’t see) anyway for readers to get to their posts.
Sarah Palin wins the debate as long as she does not have an actual total meltdown in front of the cameras. Didn’t you get the memo the Goopers sent out to all the press on this?
How nice to have a little DrDick in the morning. Hi honey.
me likey very much
I’ve seen the running comment thread on this and I’ve sent out a note to the tech people about your problems. Have you tried just e-mailing Jane about your concerns directly instead of the sprinkle it into a random comment thread and hope someone sees it approach? Or, even better, posting something about it to Ari over at Oxdown in one of his threads — since he might be able to actually, you know, DO something about it since he’s running the site?
WaPo/ABC News polling (9/27-29/08) out this am:
“Regardless of who you may support, who do you think:
“Better understands the economic problems people in this country are having”
Obama: 61 McCain: 33
“Fixing the problems with major financial institutions”
Obama: 50 McCain: 40
“The economy”
Obama: 50 McCain: 43
“Has a better personality and temperament to be president”
Obama: 57 McCain: 34
link
I think they are trying to game Ifill to keep her from asking follow-up questions
After Rahm caved on everything but pre-screened questions, allowing this debate to be only short questions and answers, if there are no follow-ups, Sarah-shit-for-brains could pretty easily come out of this thing looking like a
winnerfine little memorizer and order-taker.“Close enough, you elite librul bitchez!”
Thanks Hugh - I tried to post a diary last night and it came back and told me that I’d already posted three in the past 24 hours so I’d used up my limit or something like that. Which is interesting because the last time I looked, I’d only posted two.
This should also carry the job numbers and will show that job creation during Bush’s nearly 8 years will have fallen below 5 million as compared, as I always like to point out, to Clinton’s nearly 23 million during his tenure in office.
Saw your comment downstairs SadlyYes
Morning all.
The more I think about it the more I’m against ANY bailout whatsoever. Why should these markets be rescued? The Fed stopped publishing M3 figures more than two years ago so no one would be able to discern when the Plunge Protection Team was manipulating the market. Before the numbers stopped being made public it was evident that they were ramping up for a huge bailout of some industry. I thought at the time it would be the airlines again.
Unfortunately I have a commitment tomorrow night and I’ll have to tape the debate. Maybe a good thing if I’m able to fast forward through inane non-answers instead of feeling my blood pressure rise as the Palin fails to answer any questions while smiling sweetly and batting her eyes.
God, i hope Biden flattens her. One friggin arrhythmia from Armageddon that’s where we’ll all be if she manages to get in.
OT
The Brookings Institute is holding a forum on the financial mess, it’s up now on CSPAN 1
Federal Intervention in Financial markets
I agree with you Christie. I witnessed “There you go again,” hailed as the decisively brilliant debate point and revellation of a “great communicator.” Poor Jimmy Carter, with this facts and logic, couldn’t hope to compete. We all watched George Bush beaten repeatedly on logic and facts, but winning because many Americans like someone as dumb as they are. Palin’s newspaper reading response and others are too stupid and petulant to believe.
Nice! With numbers like that, would that tomorrow were Nov 4.
Lindsay has a post up
Obama Recruiting Rape Survivors for Campaign Ads
Ain’t that the truth!
I think it is the other way around. Biden has to keep cool and statesman-like.
Sarah will have a dozen or so memorized tapes that she will play. They will be well-crafted, well-rehearsed, and very aggressive, just like her convention speech. She will have been coached on how to turn any question into an opportunity to segue to one of them using phrases like, “What the American people really want, however, …”
As a rule I don’t email Jane. I did leave a comment for Ari on a thread he set up for this kind of thing. And I left a few comments in this thread where I hoped to raise awareness of a possible problem.
Hey, EW has a great one this morning. It turns out John Bitney, who coached Palin in the Governor’s debate was fired because he got on the bad side of Todd Palin. LOL
http://www.andrewhalcro.com/shadow_governor
I like the poll’s information but what about the context what issues currently are the most important to the American people? Sure the economy has moved up but by how much?
How much has the war or Foreign policy dropped in importance as a result of a 777 point drop in the Dow and a $700 billion bailout of banks as people lose their homes?
If anything the poll while good for Obama is understating his case.
Christy!
I found a children’s choir version of that song. I thought your peanut might enjoy hearing it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related
The words are a little hard to understand, but they are cute kids.
Good — I’m sure Ari saw them, then. As a general rule, leaving a comment for Ari about an Oxdown issue is likely going to be the fastest way to draw attention to a glitch if you find one. We did a lot of field testing of the software, but that doesn’t mean we’ve caught every tiny problem — and we’ll likely have to tinker with it a bit. So identifying any issues to Ari is the most helpful way for us to find any hiccups in the Oxdown giddyup.
I’d much prefer that she flatten herself.
agreed. fwiw, i left ari a comment with some suggestions.
of course, it’s quite possible that i am misunderstanding the problem.
Halcro also has a good piece at Alternet about his experiences debating La Palin. Vapid, devious, and charming all wrapped up in one.
Sick of the Sarah pity party - ever since the fact that she is entirely incompetent has become CW, now the pundits throw in the “I feel sorry for her” meme.
Very interesting…
‘”Andrew, I watch you at these debates with no notes, no papers, and yet when asked questions, you spout off facts, figures, and policies, and I’m amazed. But then I look out into the audience and I ask myself, ‘Does any of this really matter?’ ” Palin said’
http://www.alternet.org/electi.....%27s_like/
I think this bears repeating:
Obama took this approach on one of the Sunday morning shows when he refused to comment at all on Palin — “I’ll let the voters decide about her.”
Just give her enough rope… any other strategy is likely to backfire.
