The best thing to read in the NYT today is the Economic Scene column by David Leonhardt, about why Congress needs to do something to restore trust to the credit markets. Leonhardt is a good writer, able to explain things so that us non-economists/non-finance types get it.

Looks like wt is going to be another day of contacting Washington. 2/3 of these critters are not facing elections so the reaction is more likely to be the Cheney response “so”.
My view is that McCain is in a ‘bubble’ ala George Bush where he doesn’t know what is going on around him in the present time. He can’t use the Internet, I’m sure doesn’t have much time to read newspapers or magazines, so only knows what his handlers feed him. With Rove protege Steve Schmidt controlling the information he sees and orchestrating his talking points, it’s no wonder he is out of touch with reality. In this regard…McCain definitely equals George Bush.

Perfect. This clip shows how the whole modern-Repube schtick would get nowhere if we actually had a real Press on the national level. Repube talking points do not hold up under scrutiny, and that is why they started buying up all the major news outlets decades ago. Controlling the message was step #1 in their game plan.
If Shrub was challenged like this often in 2000 and 2004 he never would’ve been elected. McSpaceCase would be down 20% in polls if this kind of interview was common on Face the Scheiffer or Press the Meat. And Sarah Flailin? If Couric and CHAR-lee were actual journalists like these Register reporters, Sarah would actually start taking care of “her” special needs newborn.
The Press is supposed to be tough on politicians, and not eat bar-b-ques, quail, and cocktail weenies with them. That’s the whole point of having freedom of the press. It’s what the Founding Fathers and Mothers intended. We’re making some inroads on the national level in this regard with Maddow, Olbermann, etc., but still so, so far to go.

I watched the whole interview and all I could think was, “How can these people (the interviewers) take this guy seriously?”
Then, it occurred to me that this is probably what happens. During the interview McCain comes across as a nasty, hypocritical know-it-all (”I know how to win wars; I know how to solve the financial crisis; I know how to cure cancer; etc.”) The bulk of his presentation is self-serving nonsense. He takes credit for things he hasn’t done, blames people (Obama and Democrats) for things they haven’t done and then says this is no time for blame. He claims to have the solution to the financial crisis, but when asked point blank with no constraints on his ability to answer, he sticks to sound bites. By the end of the interview they probably think he is an ignorant, trigger happy fool, who shouldn’t be within a million miles of power.
Finally, they realize their taxes will be lower under McCain (arguable) and decide to endorse him.
Mission Accomplished!
