Suz!
Extreme pessimism but:
The bill is getting passed.
There is no victory for the vast bottom in the “class war”. Its just a cheap stunt to allow more profit and shaking out losers on the -777 then +500.
R’s are looking for something to lie about for 6 weeks and that may continue – but if they do not poision the pill/bill there will be candy & power to convince 6 people to flip on each side. Only chance of it going down is if there is large oscillation between libs & conservative wing.
Senate vote will focus more pressure on the House.
Its getting done, and the money is gone.
I do hope there is a political tipping point, however game theory and money/power theory tells us that political status quo is more likely and the markets will burn, we will burn, then the robbery will start all over again.
We are so under educated that its quite hard to know what to do or what to believe. If anything the obvious 90% distrust of these losers is a good thing. I knew this was coming for quite some time (maybe 1 year so I would imagine prez knew 4 years ago and congress 2 years ago) – would have been nice to discuss it. For all my high likely hood of “knowing” what was coming there was nothing to do and not much more than working 50 hours a week to be done.
Bah, the money is so far gone with or without this 700 billion or so that it does not much matter. Worth a fight on principle for sure in all cases – but its gone. Millions across the globe marched against Iraq war and it did not matter. They are not going to listen.
Oh, and wages will go down. We will now have at least two recessions where we lose on the down side and in at least one we lost on the up-side. Can move that back even more.
Was about over a year ago my buddy lost his house over some bad luck after 11 years (and a good loan). Bank would not meet him in the middle and ended up selling his house after much cost for $999.01 more than what he tried to work out.
Gotta sum it up in a line:
Feed the Rich, Eat the Poor.
If people are not marched into court in chains then you will know nothing has changed.
Hi Suz. Nice dive.
On my mind? the Facebook atty. It’s infuriating.
10!
Dat would be a 9.9 for that dive.. knees slightly bent:>)

Long time since I’ve hit late late. Got a call from friend in TX at 11:30 when I was dozing off. After which I have been wide awake.
And a question:
If the “bill” does not get passed – then what will?
Any more toying and its going to be hard-core regulation against hard-core de-regulation. Debate is great but at this point I will settle for a good size poltical victory assuming everyone falls. I have a ways to fall, but I will get back up as long as the billionare is pretty close to me at ground zero.
bullshit, if my knees wudda been slightly bent, there wudda been a slight splash
how’s julie?

Tower of Power: Credit
Well, she’s not only a friend, but also my money mgr, …
While we talked about the market & political scene, which is why I am now wide awake, mostly it was about food. She grew up in del Rio TX, right where Water for Chocolate takes place. Loves to cook real Mex. There is a real Mex restaurant in my neighborhood in NYC. Went there with a friend last Friday, and we had a fabulous dish that my TX friend had prepared for my 50 bday, when I happened to be visiting her. It is a chili, stuffed with a meat prep, covered with a walnut cream sauce, with pomegranate seeds on top. Relived my bday meal (dish has about 200 ingredients; one of my jobs was to extract the pomegranate seeds, and I had the red fingers to prove it) in the restaurant with the waiter & proprietess, sent my friend an email, and she called tonight to talk about it.
Resting comfortably tonight. In the morning they will bring her down to the Santa Clara facility and she will get another angiogram and then from there what ever else is needed. She is in good spirits and not worried as she has been through this drill before in June. I was just a mild heart attack and she should be just fine! I will be getting to the RWC Kaiser early so as to see her off in the ambulance and then catch up with her when she is waiting for the procedure.
Hard to tell…… we don’t have a very large Evangelical vote here….. Since Romney isn’t on the ticket then who knows what the Mormon vote will do…… There is a large libertarian voting block and that could really drain votes from McCain….. Bob Bar was campaigning here all weekend…… AND many of the traditional “conservatives” really hate McCain basically about immigration reform AND his attempt coup of the AZ GOP party officers in their election in 2005……
whiners
Digg it and leave a Digg comment!
Hiya Petro! You are a good man.
My guess is we’ll have a sense of things over the next few days, and folks are posting comments on the group wall….Could also discuss it on the diary, I suppose….I am imagining there were be an organic decision….but we need time for folks to hear about this, and to give it a chance to go viral.
g’nite gsd
Utah? Barr draining from McCain would be great.
I am new to facebook. what is the source of the outrage?
how come they didn’t do it today? i thought that was the plan last night?
that’s foodie love – digging out pomegranate seeds is dedication
You’re the
secondfirst person to say that … *g*What’s wrong with leaving the Pomegranate seeds in ? (honest question, I’m a noob at cooking)
how’s canada tonight petro?
The Cardiac Doctor apparently couldn’t get it set up until tomorrow. But she seems OK with it and it gives her some to rest as yesterday was a lot for her.
Source of outrage.
(Shorter: Facebook hired Alberto Gonzales’ aide, Ted Ullyot for their new general counsel. He helped write the torture memo, spearheaded White House stonewalling maneuvers re: Plame investigation and lots of other ugly things.)
How’s your hand? All better I hope.
(And nahant, I hadn’t heard of Julie’s new health prob. Hope all goes well tomorrow and the tomorrows after that).
good night, all.
no kidding. a day of rest could be just what she needed. 3 months to the day – dang…

What, was John Yoo too busy waterboarding law students to take the job?
Seeds are the only part of the pomegranate that’s edible. Skin is thick & seed pods inside are texture of thick grapefruit membrane.
Here is a particularly delicious picture.

I use Facebook when I have problems:) Oh has Broadstripe decided to update their records and let people go to the new FDL site yet?
huh?
what broadstripe problems?
Thanks !
We call the red flesh a different name from the hard bit inside it. The hard bit is crushed and used as a spice in Indian cuisine.
Dya have honey crisp apples up there, eh? Ulster county is a big apple growing area of NYS. Empire is one favorite (cross between red delicious & macintosh). But a couple of years ago, they rediscovered an old variety call Honey Crisp. Just like its name. Sweet, with a little tart, very nicely crisp & juicy. Now its all the rage.
the new place sits on 2 acres and has 4 apple trees. i don’t know what kind.. gonna have to find out
Broadstripe my cable company didn’t update their DSL? records so I couldn’t get on the lake until I changed to an independent address?
… time for Amaretto & Cognacs … *g*
Hey nahant, wishing your sweetheart a speedy recovery. Be sure to take good care of yourself too!
good night all.
Didn’t know that. How do you know that? Thought you weren’t a kitchen whiz, and your ename isn’t Indian.

shred burn or just get them outa here. What ever she wants. Julie’s Mom said the same thing this afternoon when Julie told her.. Coincidence?? Dam sure seems so!!
Thanks Neuro I think you had retired by the time I got here last evening… I was late as I didn’t leave the hospital until almost midnight.
that’s a broadstripe problem and there’s not much the lake can do about it. did you contact them and let them know about the problem?
I saw it in the grocery store but haven’t tried it.
My fav for Apple Pie is Northern Spy
All the best to you and your wife.
My place used to be mostly apple orchard. Apple trees live 60-80 years, hadn’t been maintained for the 16 years that the widow lived here before we bought it in 1980 (poison ivy vines as thick as your wrist growing up the trees). So they have all died & cut up for firewood.
Thanks for the video. It reminds that I was able to watch with a close friend of mine who passed away in 07. He loved Springsteen and loved the Seeger Sessions. He didn’t have a happy life, and he died too young. But he had his passions, and they made him happy for those moments. Thinking of you, pal. Neal, mitzvahs to you in this holiday season.
It wasn’t just me all of Beacon Hill uses Broadstripe I guess, the coffee shop, the open internet I borrow from the neighbors I could use the net but no FDL.
Yah so did RPG I was just wondering if it got fixed.
you are most welcome, seattledan – remembering the joy is the best way to remember someone
Is that called “Ollie” for short?
Oh yeah, he was a traitor but not necessarily a spy
I started cooking for real a year ago. Haven’t tried pies yet. Crust intimidates me. Besides, local farm stand has great home made pies. Don’t know what kind of apples are in the apple pies, but they sure taste great.
give them a call in the morning and ask em things
Thanks Pups for all the good wishes, I will pass them on to Julie in the morning. With that I bid you all good night, Sleep well when ya get there Pups..
Long story about my ename … will tell you all about it over Pie & Ice cream sometime … *g*
I would hang out in the Kitchen and chat with whoever was cooking, so I know all the spices but I can’t cook as well as others in my family
Nite Nahant!
i like to get sour tart green apples to put into pies. the contrast of sweet and tart makes my mouth dance.

The nearby farms make fabulous Apple, Blueberry and Strawberry/Rhubarb Pies …
… and yes, I am addicted to Lemon Meringue …
Best wishes to you and yours, Nahant !
Well, I’ve gotten really expert at soups. Something like 48 servings of 5 different soups in my freezer.
Next are sweet “breads,” like pumpkin spice, apple torte.
It’s hard to get up the energy to do pies when exceptional ones are available only 3-1/2 miles away.
my favorite lemon merange pie recipe is in the red check better homes and gardens cookbook
my mom gave me one when i got married and she recently gave one to the bride.
i miss my cookbooks – they are all in the pod
Oh, lemon meringue. The ultimate decadent comfort food.

This seems interesting I wonder if the MSM will cover this before the bailout vote?
still warm slice of peach pie with a good vanilla ice cream melting on top
Anybody have a pension invested in a hedge fund?
I do need to made a pecan pie. I have a couple of pints of Karo syrup in the pantry that are probably 20 years old. Bought them when the kids (my one & his cousins) were little to use to make gigantic bubbles. IIRC, you combine the bubble stuff with Karo syrup and use gigantic bubble shapers (still in the garage). We were too ambitious on the purchase of Karo syrup, which seems to last forever, and now I need to use it up. Pecan pie seems the trick. So perhaps I’ll try the pie crust thing.
Nahant. Good to hear things are going ok. Sorry I failed to reply to your last last night, lost my connection for a bit.
Sunny
Or peach ice cream.
Then there’s apple pie with cinnamon ice cream.
On my mind? Diagnosed hypo-thyroid. Might explain the fatigue I feel so often. Some of the depression, too.

Never trusted hedge funds even though I got soliticed by several Wall St. colleagues who went into that business. Never thought they were smart enough. Saw many many dumb thing on the street. And even if they were smart enough, meaning they made high returns for long periods, which they did, never thought I’d be smart enough to get out in time.
got that…. it really makes a difference when they get the dose adjusted and ya start to feel normal in your own skin again
when is the cruise?
dang busted, that didn’t have any swears at all
OH GOD … Pecan Pie & Butter Tarts were my fav, back when I could eat a million calories and not gain an ounce …
Activisr freind had a stroke yesterday…from frustration I think. Sad days ahead for many folks. Especially hard for urban people. It boggles me to think after reading Barack’s work in South Chicago ghetto he would buy this disatrous bailout. No protection for blacks and hispanics in trouble.
It is not a done deal despite what had been said we have to keep opposing it. Rats.
how sad, bb. positive warm healing thoughts for your friend
I wonder if this will effect the bailout? Funny Bush Never once mentioned the Hedge Funds might be in trouble!
Now you know I am serious.
Two close friends of mine are Hedge Fund Managers and they have done very well … I don’t have the nerve to invest that much $$$ into such a high risk venture …
Christine, I left you a reply epu’d on last thread..
Jan 17-24.
Thanks for the tip. I have to find the Karo recipe which is hiding somewhere.
Now here’s a great recipe. Nectarine cobbler. Made it 3 times, the last made a double recipe and one’s in the freezer. #5 on the list.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/reade…..38;go.y=12
Has pecans in the topping.
The Periwinkle crayon ran out.
Butter tarts? Sounds great.
Always thought the best breakfast would be to thinly slice a block of cholesterol, saute it in butter with plenty of salt.
i get a bag of chopped and a bag of halfs and use the entire bag of halfs on the top in a circular pattern.
Suze, I’ve been so tired for so long, I think I’ve been Hypo-t for years. Will be interesting to see how the meds work…and if it helps the depression at all.
Up here, we call that Back Bacon … *g*
it takes 6 weeks for the pill you took today to leave your system. is why they adjust dose, take blood, have ya come back in 6 weeks, take more blood and see if the dose is ok or needs adjusting. its a lotta fine tuning but once its nailed in, life becomes good again.
New man, chicken-fried steak, cream gravy, two eggs over medium and home fries. Breakfast of champions!
for years I have been lobbying in my family to have pecan pie declared “an” official Thanksgiving Day pie, if not “the” official Thanksgiving Day pie (never had any use for pumpkin)
I have largely succeeded, as it seems one manages to appear wherever I am eating TG dinner every year
Suze have you dealt with Hypo-T? You sound like you know what you’re talking about.
has anyone read this article?
http://michaeljjames.blogspot……ry-up.html
whoops. that is my blog but the entry does link to the article on the header, (so 2 clix instead of 1.) sorry. in any case, it’s bestofcyrano/thomaspaine and it explains derivatives so well and further sums up the “public relations,” campaign, (read: propaganda,) that our government has engaged in with the american people in order to get us to this point where things like this can occur and enough of us remain uninformed enough to where we do not revolt, indeed we passively endorse our lawmakers who are about to pass a bill the people have clearly said they do not want.
Hedge funds are entirely unregulated.
I am on the Finance Committeee of SUNY-New Paltz Foundation. At the last meeting, one of the new members suggested “alternative” investments. He called in, & I had never met him. Found out afterward that he is a hedge fund manager (& alum). Will argue strenuously against putting even a scintilla into hedge funds. They may have found and benefitted from market imperfections, but the larger they get and the longer they exist, the lower the probability that outperformance can continue.
that guy, think of the thyroid as the thermostat for your body – when its turned down too low, you drag and everything is like under water and takes so much energy. too high and your resting pulse is way high and its like being on the up side of manic.
have graves disease – too high – and they radiated my thyroid to make it low – high is not controllable and can result in a fatal condition called thyroid storm. low is easily managed with supplement.
Well, I must be hypo-because I’m fatigued most of the time, and often need two naps during the day, even if I sleep well.
suzanne, i am so impressed, (and addicted,) to firedoglake. is there anywhere i can go to read the history of it? i would like to gain an understanding of how it started, who all is involved today, and the dynamics of who posts when and/or what the basic credo/mission is.
Ditto me.
as far as i know, no. the blog was started by jane and the name firedoglake comes from jane’s belief that nothings finer than to be laying in front of a fire with the poodles watching a lakers game on tv
What will happen to the law suits like this if/when the Chinese Gov, I mean US gov owns these mortgages? Will they continue on and the gov get sued or get dismissed?
NEW YORK, NY, Apr 22 (MARKET WIRE) –
The law firm of Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossmann LLP announces the
filing of a class action lawsuit on behalf of investors who purchased Select
Shares or Investor Shares of the Charles Schwab YieldPlus Fund (NASDAQ: SCHW).
Marketed to investors as a conservative investment, the Fund was pitched to
investors as being only marginally more risky than a money market fund. The
Fund purported to deliver a high return by investing in ultra-short term
bonds. The Fund was sold to investors pursuant to a Prospectus, filed with
the SEC, which promised that the Fund would avoid risk by not investing in
illiquidinstruments or by concentrating its investments in any one industry.
…
In December 2007, Bernstein Litowitz established a new practice group to
protect the interests of its investor and consumer clients in the wake of
the collapse of the subprime mortgage industry and the continuing revelations of
misconduct by mortgage lenders, bankers and rating agencies. The Firm’s Subprime
Litigation Practice Group handles the full range of litigation matters
related to the subprime collapse, including claims on behalf of investors in
mortgage lenders, companies in related industries, and financial institutions
that
have concealed their exposure to losses from mortgage-backed securities, as well
as investors in CDOs and other financial instruments tied to mortgage-backed
securities. The Subprime Litigation Practice Group is currently representing
investors in a number of companies involved in subprime lending and investments,
including New Century Financial Corporation, Countrywide Financial,
Accredited Home Lenders Holding Company, Fremont General Corporation, American
HomeMortgage Investment Corporation, Citigroup Inc., and Washington Mutual, Inc.
The
Firm is also prosecuting the first case asserted on behalf of retirees whose
retirement savings were improperly — and imprudently — invested in
high-risk mortgage-backed securities, in an ERISA class action recently filed
against State Street Bank & Trust Company and State Street Global Advisors.

BB my cat is hyper-t, but the radiation treatment is EXPENSIVE and it’s being controlled with Tapazole. He’s had it for about four years.
yeap, when i was low, my resting pulse was 50 (skipping every 3rd beat) and i had to force myself to stay up until 8pm. anyone who knows me knows i’m a night owl and that something was very wrong.
doc said i would go low 2 to 10 years after being radiated.. i was low in 4 months.
I was low right away after radiation. That was 1984. Knowing what happened, I would have chosen to treat the hyperthyroid with meds rather than radiation.
thanks for that info. may i ask how you became involved? (I am not interested in becoming a poster-just curious.)
You know what’s weird? Sometimes I end up being up – a condition I call “tired but wired.” I’ll be beat but the anxiety makes it hard to sleep. In addition to all that, I have Meniere’s disease. I need a mother’s little helper.
the most common type of being low is hashimoto’s disease. i still have my underlying graves disease and have a radiation induced hashimoto’s.
It was on the other night that Carnegie…HW Bush, Jim Baker of Baker and Botts and other neocons on thr board or consulting announced as soon as the bailout was published that they were unable to meet their 50% requirement. Do you think they might need a Billions too. Duh. This stinks so bad I have to hold my breath to think of it.
In a word it is full on FASCISM. Shock Doctrine Chicago Boys are running Obama’s econmics team. It is chilling.
iconoclasm12, do you know about Oxdown? anybody can post there. click on oxdown button at top of page.
Cooks Illustrated (my current bible) says best for pie is a combo: 3 large Granny Smiths, 4 large McIntoshes. The grannys for tartness and texture, macs for flavor. It is good.
I’ve always been scared of pie crust, but hate prepared. Found an delish foolproof technique/recipe online last year. Worked a charm for me. I’ll hunt it up for ya.
i read it when it was just jane – before christy joined in writing here and starting hanging out here at night. not quite 2 years ago, i was asked if i would consider being a mod. in december of last year, i was asked if would like to co-host the late late nite threads with eureka springs.
Thanks. Look for me another time or email at rosannecahn at aol dot com. Think I’ve had it for tonight. Luv yall.
g’nite ecahn
neurophius, that is also interesting. i have been reading some oxdown just recently. i am actually more interested in starting a similar little community of bloggers. i so appreciate ian’s posts. he makes me feel semi-informed. i enjoy suzanne and eureka because they feel like late night friends even if i do not interact often. i have always liked jane’s posts and recently i have paid more and more attention to blue texan’s, lisa derrick’s and a couple of others. anyway, in time i may become more serious about my blogging.
i think i may have first read fdl after hearing jane possibly interviewed on al franken’s radio show. (i think that may have been it but i am not sure.) well in any case, you are an excellent late late night co-host. thanks for doing it.
You would think that such well educated types would not need a bailout.
You would think that such rich men would be to proud to beg.
I did expect the lying, cheating and stealing though.
the diaries are a great place to test drive blogging – learning what goes into putting up a post, interacting with the commenters, etc.
jane has said many times that the lake’s best resource are its readers.
***blushing***
thanks. i gotta admit, its dayam fun having the keys to the blog here on the dark side. i think we do our best community building here at late late nite – recovering from the crap of the day, letting our hair down and being whatever certainly recharges my battery so that i can fight on again in the morning.
Please keep me informed I would love to hear his reaction:)
eCahn, I’ll give you a recipe for 40 clove garlic chicken, but you don’t have to use that many. 5 is enough. It’s really good and easy.
i love that recipe. i made it with some fresh picked organic peppers, onions and yukon gold potatoes when my mom was down at the little cottage by the creek at the redwoods. she still talks about that dish (beaming)
Did you know they discontinued periwinkle crayons? Honest. That’s what I read anyway.
the diaries? is that what neurophius was referring to with oxdown? i am interested in the interacting part, have been wondering if i could get a group of people i am linked to to sort of tune in regularly at a specified time.
I like the freedom to go off topic
you can certainly build readers by posting at a regular time so the readers know when to look for a new post. enough people give your posts recommends, they end up on the top 10 rec list and your readership increases.
I did not. Did anyone tell Chimpy?
I don’t mind a little chicken with my garlic.
the way i figure it, this is where we talk about it all – all the day’s front page posts, the news, the elections, pie recipies.
off topic being the topic hopefully encourages lurkers to delurk and stick a toe into the lake.
well keep on fighting that good fight tomorrow and all the way to november 4! i am going to retire now for the evening. g’night all.
Yeah its hard to get nervous when everyone is doing their own thing and almost nobody is complaining.

Yeah, but Adolf could paint.
Don’t worry I recognized the names, Bush’s family hedge fund is in trouble huh? That sounds like a front pager with the Diggs story. If only we could get more information.
Never mind, I’m wrong according to Wikipedia. I heard it on the internets, I swear!
Carlyle Capital Corp. failed to meet four margin calls yesterday for $37 million, and has received notice of default from its lenders. The fund is the publicly traded arm of the Carlyle Group, the Washington D.C. equity and leveraged buyout firm that lies at the nexus of corporate and governmental power in the U.S. The Carlyle Group is the modern day source of enormous wealth for the Bush family. George H.W. Bush is a shareholder and former board member, as are key members of his administration such as Frank Carlucci, former head of the CIA, and James A. Baker, former Secretary of State. Carlucci ran the Carlyle Group for many years and Baker served as legal counsel. The Carlyle Group is noted for its substantial contacts with governments around the world, especially in the military and intelligence areas. Former president Ferdinand Ramos of The Philippines, as well as John Major, former U.K. Prime Minister, have served on the board of directors.
Carlyle Capital Corp. was formed in July of 2007 with $300 million in publicly-raised capital. It proceeded to borrow $22 billion and invest in Aaa rated agency securities, which are bonds issued by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Carlyle, which has more than $89 billion in assets under management, hired Olivier Sarkozy from UBS AG this year to run its financial-services investment group.
Bush crime family doing very well?
Obama should get behind DeFazio, Kaptur, Donna Edward, Rush Holt and the rest of the liberals and their No Bailout Act :
What’s cool is that think conservatives will like it. John Culbertson (R-Texas), on Rachel Maddow tonight, said that conservatives want mark-to-market dropped (#1) and raised FDIC limits (#5), and I doubt they’ll have much trouble with #2 or #3.
IMHO, #5 can be negotiated as to:
– where the money will come from, e.g., a securities-transfer tax and/or Bernacke’s printing presses
– what control the government will have
– what guarantees there’ll be that the government gets paid back.
By embracing a bill supported by both left-wing dems and right-wing republicans, Obama will be immune to Republican sniping on this bill, whereas derivatives of Paulson’s bill are very unpopular with the electorate. (But now the Senate wants to put lipstick on that pig by adding in a tax cut.)
Gotta get some sleep now. G’nite all.

If the Republican lions who ’seem’ to have bucked their party can’t support it, we know exactly how ‘Populist’ they are. There is a lot to like about it.
But I hear them still, today, floating this ‘free-market principles’ bullshit – the same claptrap that got us here – we shall see.

“I didn’t want this guy anywhere near a trigger.”
Swing shifters, commenter klynn at Emptywheel’s has a link to Rep. Kucinich’s site, with an idea on the bailout that tops any suggestion I’ve heard, by far. In fact one could say that without this provision, there’s no way for any bailout to help with the basic problem, which is a Grand Canyon of exploding mortgage loans.
Please have a look if you’re in touch with your congresscritters on the subject.
