That phrase "pre-9/11 mindset" gets thrown around a lot, in conservative neocon circles especially. Well, here’s a clear view of John McCain’s pre-9/11 mindset, from a 1998 Mother Jones interview:
You not only have had combat experience in Vietnam, but you were also a prisoner of war. When you look at terrorism right now, with people like Osama bin Laden, do you have any reservations about watching strikes like that?
You could say, Look, is this guy, Laden, really the bad guy that’s depicted? Most of us have never heard of him before. And where there is a parallel with Vietnam is: What’s plan B? What do we do next? We sent our troops into Vietnam to protect the bases. Lyndon Johnson said, Only to protect the bases. Next thing you know…. Well, we’ve declared to the terrorists that we’re going to strike them wherever they live. That’s fine. But what’s next? That’s where there might be some comparison.
Interesting, isn’t it? Well, what do we do next, Sen. McCain? Ready to spill your "secret plan" yet?

Hi Christy!
Country First!!!!
If he spills his secret plan then he has no plan but don’t tell anyone that!!!
Mitt and Rudy are calling their Opposition research teams right now and demanding a refund:)
Heya Matt!
McCain can’t hate someone he’s never met.
mcsame–sort of like teddy in Arsenic and Old Lace. Charge!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Real Republican motto – Me First!
I thought that it was Nixon’s secret plan first.
Amazing what you can stumble across on the internets. I was doing research on Rick Davis when I found this…and just about fell out of my chair.
McCain is following Nixon’s 1968 campaign strategy by claiming to have a secret plan.
Is this on film I think you got an Obama ad!
every day is Opposite Day in gooperland.
It’s probably a super duper supersecret plan. I want Sarah Palin to explain what it is to Katie Couric.
Hi! I was curious as to how polls in West Virginia are trending? Any response are the first debate? Are people in love with Palin or starting to figure her out?
Oh, Krugman has this up at his NYT’s blog: Where Will the Money Come From?
That’s why he so pissed off…Obama and Palin exposed his plan to attack Pakistan. Wahhhhhhh
Expecting God to come down from Heaven and to give her the wisdom She gave squirrels?
All they will say is that 9/11 changed everything.
I guess this is where civil war and “the surge is working” comes in. Plus copious use of the word “Victory.”
btw, if you wouldn’t mind digg-ing this, I’d appreciate it!
Didn’t change that McCain’s been running on his super-duper judgment in foreign policy which utterly failed him here, now does it? *g*
John McCain has a pre-9/11 view of the world.
Dugg!
I don’t think anyone has a real handle on where polls are here in WV at the moment. Just based on folks I know who were leaning McCain, though…not so much any longer. Between the economy and the epic fail that is Palin in an interview, he’s tanking with a number of folks here…
Yeah but when he’s elected, he’ll know what to do about the Kaiser.
dugg dugg as thales11 cause ThingsComeUndone is to long but Dugg!
Yep. Everyone had a pre-9/11 mindset, pre-9/11.
McCain’s role in covering approx 900 U.S. soldiers left behind in Vietnam.
http://antiwar.com/radio/2008/…..schanberg/
John McCain has a view that is pre-world war 1 – and just can’t seem to move.
“Everyone had a pre-9/11 mindset, pre-9/11.”
Another Clinton failure.
John McCain has a pre-big bang mindset. He should know, he was there.
FiveThirtyEight.com has McCain leading in WV 78-22%
Surely it’s not that bad?
(also showing IN as 50-50 – yay, us)
Bill Clinton, please report to southern Indiana – stat!
Why did the words Crimean War mindset just flash through my brain? *g*
It was within 4% the other day — so not sure what poll Nate’s looking at with that spread. That said, Obama hasn’t campaigned here a single day since before the primary in May…
eCAHN – I posted the original article here also – I don’t understand why no MSM out there is picking this up…too far in the past?
“Well, we’ve declared to the terrorists that we’re going to strike them wherever they live. That’s fine. But what’s next? That’s where there might be some comparison.”
We could say we will strike them in Pakistan, America, together, to keep them from attacking America, or her allies. But that would be tipping our hand. And then, what’s next???
But don’t be so nice about St. McCain.
Depends on what it’s based on — if it’s accusations coming from the Ted Sampley crowd, it’s likely crap, which is why people haven’t been passing it forward. But because it’s Schanberg saying it, there may be more to it than simply the Sampley idiots. Having not listened to the interview, though, I can’t say. But these rumors have been floated for years by a number of folks who are less-than-credible. Which is to say, be very wary of sourcing on this and take everything on this issue with a large grain of salt.
I wish we had hit the Terrorists but instead we are in Iraq. i can even understand maybe not wanting to cross Pakistan’s border to attack Ossama.
I do not understand why we are paying Pakistan aid money for their noncooperation in getting Ossama.
For such efforts, Musharraf and the Pakistani government have been paid handsomely, receiving more than $10 billion in American money since 2001.

Ever hear of Rick Rescorla?
You gotta respect McCain’s refusal to sit down with Emiliano Zapata.
McCain can’t remember what he said 15 minutes ago let alone 10 years ago.
Major hero on 9/11 and war hero. RIP
Christy, how many electoral votes does WV have? Obama seems to be campaigning toward those. Nice post – who knew McC was so dumb?
What! McCain has really given up on the Mexican vote then:)
Schanberg, the reporter, sez that it was ignored by MSM right from the get go. SOS. Govt wouldn’t lie to us about something like that, embarrassment for the country, war is over, let’s move on, etc. Now it’s too far in the past, unless you think McCain’s coverup reflects on what kind of prez he’ll be (duh). But lets keep pimping it and maybe someone will notice. A Rachel story?
I believe we’re still at 5 electoral votes, unless something’s changed in the last year.
From HuffPo – Letterman vs. McCain
“Horseshit.”
The french paid for theirs, we didn’t. About a year ago, I had a strange dream involving American POWs in Vietnam. I have no idea why I dreamed it. In the dream I was at some crazy party I couldn’t leave, and some holographic type images were trying to communicate in a different language. I got frustrated trying to understand them and asked them in differnet languages what they were saying. Then they said “Vietnam,” but didn’t look vietnamese. Totally european actually. I said “What are you Vietnmaese?” Then they spoke English and said “Nixon left us here.” It was a crazy dream. I have no idea why I dreamed it.
Sweet
Well, if anyone is going to research the hell out of it, it will be Rachel. She invented “doing your homework”. I admire her tremendously.
I loathe the electoral college system. My vote doesn’t count.
Schanberg just looked at the body of the report, according to the interview. Apparently the staff rebelled and put a lot of documentation into the report itself, while the executive summary said that only a few were left behind. Seems like a solid piece of reporting but I have no prior info on this subject so I could be fooled.
BTW, apparently McCain’s legislative record to keep docs secret (including his own confessions under torture which were broadcast in the camps so lots of witnesses) is beyond arguement. I think I heard that he had a collaborator in keeping the full records secret in Kerry, but don’t take my word on that.
don’t get the joke huh?
Egg on the face for the Rethug leadership! Screwed by their own! Newt on the Loose!
LOL!
Ms Christy,
Wouldn’t this interview have been around the time the Rs were accusing Clinton of the Wag The Dog action – drumming up the Bin Laden problem to be a distraction for his Monica problems?
OT: Glenzilla celebrates the demise of the bailout:
If this is one of the hearings I’m thinking about, both McCain and Kerry got pretty hot, because the Sampley folks — who were part of the testimony — basically called them traitors outright in the hearing. And it got very testy. The Sampley crew has a long history of trying to bilk money out of survivor families by promising to help them find out “the truth” about their disappearance, but they never really do anything beyond accusing others of a cover-up — which is part of the reason that series of hearings got really heated.
Raven and SouthernDragon and the whole crew of VVAW could give you a lot more background on that.
Holding relatives for ransom in Vietnam 70s-80s doesn’t seem unusual. A very good Vietnmese friend of ours had to pay through the nose, plus borrow, to try to get her teenage daughters out of hock. And once the sum was paid, the Vietnamese would say she hadn’t paid enough, and on and on.
Yep — which is one of the many reasons I highlighted it. *g*
Is any of this public record? Aside from feeling real sad about the solders and wondering what we can do at this late date I hope Obama frees any government records on this after the election.
Thanks. Helps me get up to speed on the subject.
Como no!
McCain muttered under his breath, “horseshit” during the debate when Obama brought this up…regarding the Spanish PM.
McCain to Steve Schmidt, “Did you know there is a NEW Mexico?”
Crap a con job thats low.
McCain, uses it like shampoo, lather, rinse, repeat.
If it was a hearing, why wouldn’t it be public?
I’m sure McCain won’t meet with the leader of New Mexico either!
Not to put either Raven or SouthernDragon in the middle of it, btw — it’s a really, really heated subject among vets who had friends go MIA and who have worked a lifetime to find answers for them and their families. As it should be. It’s one thing to want real answers if they can be found. It’s another thing entirely to bilk money out of grieving people without really providing them much more than just enough crap to stoke their fear, so you can keep on bilking them.
And I’ve never seen any shred of proof from anyone connected to Sampley that it was anything beyond that.
Good question
If Schanberg read the transcripts, then they must have been public. Yes?
That is all well and good but we need information then we can make the best choices. We need to listen and process the information and we need to have some level of trust and ability to verify the information as well.
Pretty safe bet since it’s Bill Richardson.
*blush*
McCain to Steve Schmidt, “Did you know there is a NEW Mexico?”
“Does this mean we’ve put all the fences in the wrong place?”
The “McGramps invented the Blackberry” guy is up on MSNBC now.
Okay, now I spewed my tea…
Oooooh, I wonder what McCain will have invented today?!?
Sure — it’s not to say that McCain wasn’t an ass in the hearings. He’s always been something of an ass. *G* But if it’s the ones I’m thinking about, there were reasons for him to get overheated in those particular hearings — and Kerry and several other Senators as well, as I recall.
He has reinvented bipartisanship today
Yeah, it made me turn in my cable box.
talks about good negotiations between “all four parties”…
and that was the most sensible thing he said. I think.
(okay, I really didn’t understand a goddamned thing he said after the “four parties” line).
Oooooh — and does it now wear a candy cane striped tie?
From Attaturk:
“Gov. Palin and I agree that you don’t announce that you’re going to attack another country.”
You would think John McCain, scion of an old Navy family, wouldn’t fall back on arguments Tojo would make.
-G
Too bad congressional hearings and documents don’t go very far back on GPO access.
I can’t wait until the freakin election is over. Hopefully it will signal an end to McCain’s political life.
Thanks. Will listen to it later.
“Senator, you’re holding the map upside down.”
I hadn’t, but I have now. Hell of a human being. Thanks for the tip.
I’m telling y’all. I won’t be happy until McCain shakes things up maverick style at thursday’s debate by posing as Palin in drag.
I picture him as a cherry lipgloss kinda guy. You, too?
If you do, let me know what you think. I’m a newbie to this story, so don’t know any other side than the one he presents and not sure how to regard it.
Fits nicely with that creepy looking Candyland game.
*spew alert* There went my green juice. LOL. That would be very mavericky
He’ll be angry at first but within four years McCain will probably be giving President Obama a big ol’ hug.
No problem for me. Sampley and his buddies are the worst of the worst. They have used this POW/MIA deal and the families for years. I have friends who say “hey, 8 years ago you argued with me about what a good person McCain was”. All I can say is that I think he WAS in terms of him and Kerry trying to put this POW/MIA bullshit to rest. I suppose that is why I am so pissed at where he has gone since then. The best comparison I can make is, just like Kerry listened to his handlers and rolled over for the Swifites (and sampley), so is Mc Cain letting these motherfuckers from the Bushco show run his. Lesson, all together now 1, 2, 3
It don’t mean nuthin!
That would be wonderful. There is a lot of alleged information available, and a lot of opinions about courses of action. The economists I’ve read (e.g., Krugman) claim that the proposed bill is not good but is still better than nothing. Most of them feel that the government should infuse money into critical institutions by buying preferred stock in them, rathar than purchasing their toxic assets, which Paulson on the other hand claims to be under-valued in the current market.
ugh, Christy :-)
You think maybe he can wear his party hat?
I think he likes things spicy. maybe cinnamon.
Oh, please, PLEASE, let him wear the party hat. HAHAHAHAHA
haha! the party hat! definitely.
He pulls it off better than you might think.
I was thinking some cherry red with a little blue tint to it might make his teeth look a little whiter on camera. I bet Cindy could help him select a nice shade. *g* (And isn’t this is weird little tangential discussion…LOL)
Blue Texan post up entitled: “John McCain’s Spectacular Two Weeks Of Epic Fail”
Blue Texan is upstairs!
John McCain’s Spectacular Two Weeks Of Epic Fail
as long as she doesn’t pile it on like a trollop!
yeah, it’s weird but I’m just trying to go with the McCain strategy. You know, and after he wears the dress, people will call him a genius!!
Lucky for McCain that J. Edgar Hoover made it possible for every cross-dresser to feel pretty (comparatively).
definitely a debate winning style! LOL!
Does this Sampley group have any partisan affiliations or agenda besides conning victims?
hmmm SD have a tiger question for you if you are around
Sampley and Kiley are grand master scumbags.
Too funny!
Be interesting to see if Biden could stay on his game.
Weebits always wants to sleep/nap/cuddle on the stomach chest area. Is it the heartbeat thing/warmth thing or just a cuddly kitty thing? (I’m just trying to understand tiger behavior)
You rang?
Both, but in your case your heartbeat is the one she’s most familiar with. I would imagine she sleeps very soundly on you. It’s the safest place she’s known. For all intents and purposes you are her mother.
see my 116. weebits has developed some rather interesting sleeping habits.
thanks.
And then there’s this…
In 1998 McCain supports sending nuclear capable F16 fighter-bombers to what he called a “failed state” Pakistan despite knowing of their preparations to test the AJ Khan-designed Nuclear bomb.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..051898.htm
She is a little terror now but still the sweetest thing in the world
OK, that’s a beauty.
From what I know of Sampley and Kiley they’ve used the POW/MIA families as a source of income for years, delivering nothing but bs in return. Kiley’s personal beef with McSFB is a scam he was running at The Wall that McSFB was instrumental in having shut down. Sampley is the better con of the two.
Vietnam Vets Against Mc Cain
They are all just little Christian the lion. btw there are a lot more Christian clips on youtube now including a couple interviews with the 2 guys who made that incredible story possible.
Kiley’s hate site.
That clip just turns me into a puddle every time I watch it.
Welcome to the club. I regret that I could not have been with George Adamson during all those years in Kenya. I’d still be there.
McCain called Bin Laden a ‘Freedom Fighter’ in the debate. He called the mujahadeen led partially by Bin Laden as Freedom Fighters for driving the Russians out of Afghanistan.
