Cries from the House GOP leadership notwithstanding, the failure of the bailout package to pass the House had nothing really to do with Nancy Pelosi’s speech.
It wasn’t Nancy that upset them — it was Boehner and Blunt and Bush.
The disgruntled members of the GOP caucus were probably telling the leadership things like this in the cloakroom right before the vote:
Members: We’re screwed. We’ve been backing this administration unquestioningly for 7 years, and now it’s all going to get thrown in our faces.
Boehner: Nonsense. These are democrats. We’ll still be able to stick to them, because they’re going to be on the hook for this one too. They’ll be voting for it as well, so it’s all good.
Members: We’re not talking about this vote. We’re talking about all the crap that put us in this position. For crying out loud, Paulson is one of ours, right? He was head of Goldman Sachs until two years ago, right? That’s what the Democrats are going to hit us with: "You guys had the keys, and you drove the car not just into a ditch but over a cliff."
Boehner: Nonsense. We’ve always been able to spin better than they can on two subjects – national security and business. That won’t change. We can still beat them, even if we pass this bill.
Enough folks bought that in the cloakroom to make it look like the bill would pass. But when those folks heard just a hint of their own words coming out of Nancy Pelosi’s lips, all Boehner’s assurances went up in smoke.
Their anger is at Boehner for his incompetence, and also at themselves for going along with him and Bush too many times, all for the sake of party unity.
But they just can’t say that out loud, so the public target is Nancy.

the big daddy party is now a buncha watb
It appears as though the Senate is intent on pushing this crap legilation through using the falling stock market as the impetus:
“Darryl Issa, R- Riverside County, who made a fortune in car alarms,
calmly told reporters afterward, “This is a manufactured crisis,” and said
the administration already has the tools it needs to inject banks with capital, action he said would be “every bit as effective” as the bailout.
Issa and other dissident Republicans had consulted with former Federal
Deposit Insurance Corporation William Isaac, who urged them to explore
alternatives.
“People began to realize that they don’t have to give $700 billion to the
administration,” Issa said. “The FDIC can provide the capital…They can
end this crisis with the tools they have.”
He and others demanded that a recent “mark to market” accounting rule
that requires companies to write down their assets to current market value
be suspended, and that FDIC insurance be raised to cover deposits higher
than $100,000 to prevent a run on banks – already underway – by small
businesses and wealthy individuals.
Asked whether those items could be included, Gregg said it would be
“counter productive” at this stage to discuss reopening the bill. Gregg and Dodd both said negotiators from both parties had acted fairly,
compromised, and come away with their basic concerns met.” from:

Can you Digg it? I can!
This is the Perfect Time to Vote-Out all the Incumbent Republicans!
Especially Boehner, Blunt and Mean Jean.

What was the score on the bailout vote?
Hiya Suzanne,
Oh, good grief. I don’t know what to think, except to laugh my butt off at TDS. That Jon, what a guy!
how was Colbert?
Evening, all-
from the previous thread:
Yes. And then it’s time to take the Democratic Party back. Immediately. Without pause or hesitation. If Obama does indeed win-and I think it’s his, unless he really fucks up-we clink our glasses, drink to his health, and send out the word:
“All units assemble for further advance.”
My personal take on this is simple: I thought this was a shitty bailout bill. (Okay, I didn’t read it. I’ll admit that I’m just ASSUMING it was shitty, because several dozen Republicans voted for it.) It would have thrown $700 billion at Big Shitpile, with no real idea of how or why this was supposed to do any good. It would have done little or nothing to help regular people who are in danger of losing (or have already lost) their homes. I’m glad it failed. Yes, I’m upset that I now call my IRA my “Fidelity Freefall Fund”, but I knew it could lose money when I started, and I stupidly trusted the market, so tough shit. For me, the icing on the cake here is that we’re pretty much in the same boat that we were in a week ago, but now it’s all John McCain’s fault.
Interesting thought, but that is all it is. I mean, who are you to lay some conjecture like that out as fact, or probability?! It makes progressives look like pie-eyed freaks.
While I believe that it really had nothing to do with Pelosi’s speech, that supposedly influenced 12 crucial votes, I don’t think Boner has that much tactical capacity.

Roll call here.
But they just can’t say that out loud, so the public target is Nancy.
They thought they could but they got kicked in the balls by Barney.
Now foreign governments are telling the U.S. what it should do:
Australia PM calls for U.S. lawmakers to pass bailout plan

“Brown’s arch-rival, opposition Conservative Party Leader David Cameron, also put the onus on U.S. lawmakers to take action.
“The eyes of the world are on Congress and a deal is needed in order to stabilize financial markets and financial institutions not just in America but elsewhere,” Cameron said.”

Oh, jayt, just Excellent! Can’t be a spoiler, but don’t miss.
ok – set to record – thanks!
Good grief – all the Rs do is whine – well, no, some of them cry like their leader but honestly, they ought to at least take their lumps and just shut up. They sound like a bunch of 4 year olds.
Unfortunately, he represents North San Diego County too. I hope he’s in for a surprise soon…
Suz, how goes it in the new dwelling?
i move in this week – still at the cozy cottage on the coast
They sound like a bunch of 4 year olds.
“That mean ole Ms. Pelosi said bad things about us….”
note to North County: please get rid of Issa + Bilbray. Pretty please.
Like ocean views?
Bilbray has a better chance of finding other work than Issa, I’m afraid. If they count the military vote, though, Issa could be in trouble. Poor diddle baby.
not from where i am – i have to walk down the road about 50 yds or so and then i can see the ocean through the trees
at the new place, its on the bay with the spit separating the bay from the ocean
thanks.
I see my D comgresswoman voted against it. Like I asked her to.
I agree with Teddy’s strange bedfellows comment on a previous thread.
I agree with every word, and this is fine icing indeed:
Yum.
I still wonder whether we should sell North County to the OC :)
You are not allowed to blame anything on John McCain.
Yum – with sprinkles :)
Issa’s spot on Tweety this afternoon was pure campaign. Sold hard that the Republicans broke with their President out of courage and devotion to district and faced down the beast. And in a district that has elected him a few times, it will probably sell.
Sounds like my dream come true. My parents lived about a quarter mile from the ocean at Lewes, DE for many years. And I thought that was the highlight of being near the sea. Your place on the bay sounds so lovely, sigh.
Hi Chris, Suz, everyone. I really enjoyed the side-by-side Palin/Fey comparisons that KO had. Funny and kinda eerie.
“Senator Palin, how would you have voted on the bailout bill, and why?”
“I would have said thanks, but no thanks, to the bailout bill. If we want a bailout bill, we’ll write it ourselves.”
uhhh…Governor Palin…
It’s just that I can’t imagine her governing anything
I think Issa doesn’t want to take a chance of taxpayers getting a good investment. He thinks people like Darrell Issa ought to be able to grab these riches for themselves.
Hey Margot!
I don’t know if I should laugh or cry. Go Tina!
et’s hoping for impeachment of her governoring in feb iirc
Tina will be looking at MANY awards coming up!
does letterman go after mccain again tonight?
very interesting….NONE of the AZ congresscritters voted for the Bailout….. Repug or Democrat…..
I think that I’m too late to see Letterman — is he at 11:00 when we are watching TDS? It has been years…
i was giggling when rachael mentioned that little factoid tonight
that’s some leader mccain’s turning out to be
Rachel’s commentary on the failure of the Repug leadership tonight was right on. Mr. Gnome bets a new populist party is going to rise up out of this mess.
Did you see that ET is the source for the HuffPo article on dinosaurs and humans living at the same time?
Off to YouTube!
I know, I live in SD and think he’s a herniated rectum BUT on this issue he is correct and it scares the hell out of me that Dodd and Gregg will not consider alternatives to a plan that is obviously flawed.
You know, I can’t help but wonder if this might be the time for the DNC and some of the 527’s-since McCain seems so damned determined to do their job for them-to reallocate some of their resources from the micro-campaign against McCain to a macro-campaign against the entire Republican Party. You know-some ads, pointing out simple facts and figures about the quality of the job they’ve done, and end up with:
Vote Republican-ARE YOU KIDDING !?!?!?!
We are currently split 4 Dems and 4 Repugs…… I can figure how the Repugs vote but was worried about the Dems and they too voted against it too…… Nice to know my phone call to Harry did not go to wast…..
The Republican Party Train Wreck and Implosion begins this Thursday at 9pm…
…and ends 5 weeks from Today!
That’s 5 weeks of Making Them Own Their Failure.
We only want Our fair share of the Republicans’ Seats – and that would be All of Them!
Take Back America!
SPEW!!!
So does anyone know what happens now? Is the Senate going to pass the bill and ship it back to the House?
This is an explanation of mark to market from wiki.
I don’t claim to know anything about high finance, but I know enough to keep an eye on what crooks want to do with mark to market stuff. I don’t know what they’re up to, but they’re up to something.
They read it on Thom Hartman’s show this morning….. when our ET hits the KO and Rachel show…… well….
OMG. Sarah is wearing twist-on earrings.
Spending bills CANNOT come from the Senate….. the constitution clearly says that ALL spending bills originate in the House….. oh I forgot…… Bush used it for TP…
I agree. This financial mess needs to be freely credited where it belongs. And in every district with a republican with a history of voting this line of crap, it needs to be advertised.
one of them there accountability moments is how fearless leader describes elections
I don’t know anything either, but Issa is big on mark to market talk. Believe me, he didn’t vote against this bill for his constituency. He voted against it for his crooked, lying self.
I’m told that Vets for Peace is putting a lot of pressure on Bilbray.
I think Boehner planned to blame Nancy Pelosi all along; the only thing that changed is that their stupid bailout failed to pass. Really, if you think about it, the whole charade they pulled could have been rehearsed as if they were going to succeed.
I doubt very much we’ll see much of Boehner in the 111th Congress, which means more Ginger-Kid Candy for me!
I agree. these guys only know obstructionism. WATB!
See #2 and read here:

“There is one practical problem that will plague the Paulson Plan and any
plan that involves the government purchasing distressed assets from
financial institutions. These assets are NOT(!!!) accurately valued on the
books of financial institutions.5 Accordingly, these institutions are not in a position to sell them to the government at current fair market value.”
“The mentality that led two of our best and brightest public officials to
attempt to defend the kind of avaricious conduct that played a central role in the current crisis is something that must be changed if we are to avoid future market crises.”
what is ginger kid candy? Eric Cantor? Mike Pence?
Issa’s got a black heart. As much as I despise Paulson and have called him many names, I don’t think he deserved to be called a day-trader — by Issa, of all people. Takes a thief to know one, though, I guess.
THE whole plan for 2009 is to blame it on Democrats….. no matter what….. even if it all started under BushCo……
Friends in Bilbray’s district tell me he could well be gone.
I tried to fix your broken link, could not – please try again.
I think, because it’s a revenue bill, it needs to originate in the House. But hell, they’ve thrown the entire Constitution out the window already, so who knows….
unfortunately for them, its their only plan
and they don’t realize just how the peoples paying attention nowadays makes it obsolete
That’s why I’m hoping Obama lays it out clearly for the knuckleheads in America. The republicans own this mess.
We all remember the joy of having beaten FISA in the House… until the Goopers, with happy help from Democrats, resurrected it later.
They aren’t done.
yep…. once upon a time….. the Repugs used to own the spin and the machine that did the spin but now there are new kids on the block and we have our media……
That’s just a start. Mismanagement of the war on terror. Billions in surpluses converted into trillions in debt. Cronyism. Blatant serial perjury, as well as ignored subpoenas as part of the deliberate corruption of the DOJ. The treason of those who outed Plame, and the…commutation. FEMA. Katrina. Wiretapping. Abu Graib. Guantanamo.
Every bit of this sh*t needs to be hung around the neck of the entire Republican Party, hard, fast, and continuously.
Adam Putnam
I know….. but I at least have hope that NONE of the AZ Congresscritters voted for the bailout……. woohoo….. united the whole congressional delegation from Az….
Hey, if we’re going to get blamed anyway, we might as well come up with a bill that the democratic majority can all get behind and vote for. The Rethugs have screwed themselves. They have freed us from the need to pander to them. Now we get to have it all our way and take all the credit for SAVING THE AMERICAN ECONOMY! What the hell is a majority for anyway??
Pelosi might just decide to own it, you are right. For all the talk of flipping 12 GOPs, she only needs to flip 12 Dem votes to pass the disaster.
late late nite upstairs
YUP!
Hey she came up with the number she promised. Boner didn’t.
Local news….. couple lost their jobs today plus $50,000 in their 401k’s in a single day…..
AdamPutnam. so young and…inexperienced. I enjoyed this from your link Teddy:
This is correct. I have long argued that the one big thing that really separates Bush from really well and truly being a dictator is the ability to appropriate money. I’m sure now the Republicans will now argue that the President has that inherent authority, under Article II, and can exercise it to defend the American people under the AUMF.
agree 1000%. i just saw some of the disingenuous house conservative snots. what a sleazy looking crew. they were thanking John McCain for coming back to DC and giving them the courage to vote against a bad bill. lemme get this. a day or 2 ago, john mccain was a great leader because he suspended his campaign went back to DC and got a deal done. today, theses people are saying he’s a great leader because he fucked it up.
sigh. i give up with this shit.
Thanks. A very interesting article, and I’m only part way through it. BTW, here is the full link: http://www.investorsinsight.co…..waste.aspx
For some reason, I wasn’t able to get yours to work.
Hi Lurk: The link at #61 still doesn’t work, but I’ve posted the correct link at #84.
Local News….. School has forbidden rosaries because they say that the kids are using rosaries as gang symbols….. anyone heard about that?
to me it looks like discrimination along religion & race lines….
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/…..#038;tsp=1
Sorry about that.
Thanks, don’t know what I did mistakenly but glad you fixed it.
I can’t imagine how they keep Boehner as their leader. Either a significant number of “his” people lied to him and walked out on the deal or there was no deal to start with and he just lied to Dems.
He left his people split and many voted for the bill, endangering their seats.
We promise not to blame John McCain for leading a group of House Republicans to NOT vote for the bill while lying to Boehner about their intentions, so that when the vote went down it would surprise a bunch of people — especially some market investors who were caught off guard by the sudden drop that made tons of money for somebody. I wonder if the people who made money on today’s drop were friends of John.
BTW, does anybody know if Chris Cox lifted the shorting ban? Was all of todays’ drop normal selling?
OMG that’s funny. LOL
The vehicle used to advance the bailout bill is an old HR 3997 adapted for the purpose “On Concurring in Senate Amendment With An Amendment”. The Bill Title is “To amend the Internal Revenue Codeof 1986 to provide earnings assistance and tax relief to members of the uniformed services, vulunteer firefighters, and Peace Corps volunteers, and for other purposes”
