Starting off the day with a little Beethoven. I give you Ode to Joy.
Whew. What a week. Don’t know about everyone else, but I’m worn to a frazzle just trying to keep up with the roller coaster of news and insanity.
That crisp Fall feeling is in the air.
Which can only mean one thing: fresh cranberries will be arriving in the stores soon and I can whip out my tattered 3×5 recipe card for Cranberry-Apple Coffee Cake. I buy extra cranberries every year to freeze in 1 1/2 cup batches just to pull them out for this coffeecake and muffins throughout the year. But, alas, I’m out and must wait for the newest round of ripe cranberries to arrive in our local store.
I’m going to freeze more this year. A lot more.
Because I was mean last week and mentioned the chocolate cinnamon bread pudding that I like to make as a treat, I thought I’d share the recipe with everyone. (And mention that I just use those little semi-sweet mini-chips instead of chopping up the chocolate, so I get the smooth, gooey chocolate flavor all through the pudding without having to do the work for it. You can thank me later.)
How are things with you? Pour another cuppa coffee and pull up a chair…

About Firedoglake
mornin’ Christy
‘mornin’…watching the lake this cloudy morning…bands of hail hit the tall timber last night…
hope all are well and mellow this morning.
Waiting for the cranberries too. Got a recipe for jam with blackberries (in the freezer), cranberries, ruby red grapefruit juice. Promised to send some to selise when it’s cooked.
Good morning, Christy and jayt. Going to be a quiet weekend around here. My wife just took our older daughter for her first campus visit (senior in high school) and they will spend the night before coming back. Our younger daughter leaves in a few hours for an overnight camping trip. Guess I get to watch all the football I want.
Our family recipe for cranberries is jokingly referred to as sauced cranberries. Lots of brandy and some sugar before baking. Makes a wonderful glaze that’s good with just about anything and keeps in the refrigerator forever. I’ll dig out the card and type it up if there’s interest.
Christy,
a roller coaster of a week indeed. coming home to the threads last night was like the reward for hangin’ in – so many longtime firedogs. was thinking of raucous threads past and how at the time last night was some far off ‘what if’ . my, my, my
no tomatoes for me to freeze this year. :(
we had a wicked rain storm a few weeks back – more than 5 inches in a couple of hours that wrecked most of the field tomatoes at the farm i go to. still a few tomatoes for our weekly shares, but no extras like last year when i bought 40lbs for $1/lb and froze the sauce i made from them. loved having it throughout the winter to remind me of summer.
maybe i should try some cranberries, that’s a good idea.
looking forward to your kitchen experimentation. *g*
I just had cherry pie & ice cream for breakfast, thinking This is one of the reasons I love being an adult.
Yesterday evening I went nuts and bought 12 hostas of different varieties, on sale for $5 each @ Home Depot. This morning, following the perfectly gentle rain we’ve had for the past 24 hrs, I’ll plant them in the back gardens. I’ve spent a lot of time pulling English ivy, vinca major and invasive liriope from those shady areas. They already contain some (boring-looking) hostas and ferns. Time for some excitement. Loving this cooler weather.
Morning Ladies and Gent.
Prairie: I’m more mellow than I was all week. It was kind of a rough one.
Looks like I’m going to be the Sarah Palin of this thread. Had guests for dinner last night, served a scrumptious grocery-baked pie for desert.
Morning Christy,
Muppets & Beethoven!
and food yummmmMm
I am not an American, but am fascinated, and scared to death by, your country. I very much enjoy the humour, politeness and general good sense expressed on FDL, so perhaps I’ll chime in from time to time.
What has since 9/11 terrified me about the richest and most powerful nation on earth is its willingness to dance with outright fascism.
What’s wanting right now is an economic depression and a charismatic maniac. The rest you have: wealth-based plutocracy, xenophobia, rabid nationalism, imperial ambition, unavenged injury, adoration of all things military, international isolation, and a widespread tolerance, rising to enthusiasm, for an irrational, unapologetic and inhumane ideology. The depression could be coming, one doesn’t really know. Maniacs are a dime a dozen.
As I understand it, one of the severest threats to face FDR came not from supreme court judges and congressional republicans, but from Huey Long’s populist gangsterism.
I don’t see Obama as a threat or saviour. I’d like to think, though, that his election will mark the tidal retreat of a pathological mass stupidity.
I don’t want to live in interesting times.
make that “dessert”. Can’t bake or avoid typos.
Put 2 cups of cranberries in a large jar add 1/2 gal of potato vodka add 1 cup of sugar (or more depending on desired taste) cover and store in a cool dark place for about 6 weeks. Turn to keep mixing well every week. Drink liberally for the holidays (or any other time). My wife makes a great martini with the cranbooze 3 parts vodka 1 part cranbooze.
OT – (hell, everybody knows I can’t cook)

Sen. Barack Obama 67% 144171
Neither 7% 15058

*imo, could merely be the result of Obama supporters being more computer-literate.
** Or something.
dance hell, we have been sleeping with fascism for a while now.
It’s what terrifies us, also. You make several good points. Will you tell us where you’re from? I’m always interested in how the world views the U.S.
Morning, gang — waiting for my coffee to finish brewing… *stares at coffee pot*
Here’s to mellow, demi — sometimes it seems that the giant arc of the world follows the arc of our lives [what? the world doesn’t revolve around us? Oh well okay, the arc of our lives parallels the arc of the world….*g*]
Just before last night’s debate we had a horrific storm track thru the north country
well, i’m off to clean the kitchen and start laundry before congress starts their day (house at 10, senate at 9:30) apparently to consider the bailout?
catch you all later, and i’ll check back here later for yummy recipes.
*hands Christy a cuppa Caribou coffee, french roast, of course*
sitting watching the sun come up over the lake, ready to take the first bite into apple cranberry dessert bread from our local Breadsmith.
That sounds a lot like German rumtopf which, while delicious, should be enjoyed in very small quantities lest it render you knee-walking-barfing-in-the-garden drunk.
I’m from north of the border, up Canada way. Unfortunately, I can’t see Alaska from my house. Only a few hours from Buffalo, though.
welcome, Chasman. Hope to hear from you more often.
The frozen cranberries work great — I freeze them in either 1 1/2 c. or 1. c. amounts, and then I have them for coffee cake, muffins or cranberry salad all year long. The obnoxious thing is I never quite freeze enough to last the rest of the year. And, where we live, they disappear from the store shelves after the holidays except for the dried kind.
But I like to use fresh or frozen when I can — more zing to them for the cooking.
“What has since 9/11 terrified me about the richest and most powerful nation on earth is its willingness to dance with outright fascism.”
Corporate Fascists?
May I share a non-cranberry, non-Obama story? But it starts with food…
When I visited my mother yesterday to take her some of the stew I had made on Thursday, she told me this story. She was a very young girl, maybe 3 or 4, she had been sitting on a curb near her house. It was in Moline, IL during the depression. She saw her momma and daddy walking back from a bus stop and cross the street to speak with some fellas who were starting to set up circus tents in an open field. They told them that their cook wagon had been stuck in some mud at the previous town and they had no food. My grampa invited them over to their house where he made coffee and gramma served them some fresh bread she had just made. The circus folks were so grateful that they gave my mom’s family free tickets to see the circus. There were five kids in all.
Gramma and grampa had just gotten back from the doctor’s office, where he told them that my grampa had cancer. Shortly after that, he went up to a hospital in Chicago where he passed away.
My mom said that the circus was the last thing the family did together, and that she remembers sitting on his lap for the show in the big top.
Mom got teary telling me the story – and she never cries – and I held and rocked her for a while.
See, almost as good as a cranberry recipe, no?
a great reason to freeze extra cranberries…another one
http://www.foodandwine.com/rec…..own-butter
Yes, but you can always drool when the cooks bring the food out.
jayt, I’ll bet that even you could make that recipe for Chocolate Cinnamon Bread that Christy linked to in the post. The toughest part of the recipe is to tear up four slices of bread.
Give it a shot, and come back next week and tell us how it went.
What an amazing moment of serendipity. So glad your mom shared it with you, and you shared it with us. :)
Thank you, the kids woke me up this morning (my wife already left for work) and I gently asked them to let me sleep a little more, but it was too late. My mind got churning over last night’s debate so I got up to hack out my thoughts in a post on my blog (that literally no one but me ever reads).
Then I checked over here and got this calming, soothing post. That’s just what I needed.
I don’t have any fresh cranberries right now, but we got a bumper crop from our apple and pear trees this year. However, this morning I’m going to make waffles from scratch with a recipe I found that makes the fluffiest, most delicious waffles I’ve ever had. And we have our own free-range eggs – the recipe calls for 8 of them. So that should be good.
Then it’s sports time, my six-year-old has a basketball game at 10:30 EST and his older brother (11) has an away football game this afternoon.
It’s nice to see us raging libruls are just folks like everyone else. We’re not just extras from a Rage Against the Machine video.
still OT, (still can’t cook)

Morning, folks; no garden work for me today; it’s raining this morning in Upstate NY, but the day is full: Town dump, farmers’ market(we’ve got to pick up our chickens from a local farmer – we did a deal with her for the year to get her some money to go on and have our chickens sort of guaranteed), major laundry action and some cleaning. Yes, this week has been one for the books for sure. For my job, I have to watch natural gas prices and they jumped up, up…then down 1.50..then up..then down .50 over just one week’s time. I emailed my contact that gets me my numbers that I was ordering air sickness bags for my desk drawer…totally nuts.
That’s such a sweet story, demi.
I may move into your neighborhood if the repubs steal another election. As a matter of fact, Canada’s population may double.
Good morning all! It was kind f a rough week here as well. Got let go from my job on Friday, which is never fun. The good news is I have quite a few irons in the fire that are looking good. Trying to decide what to cook for dinner today, I like to do something special on a football Saturday. Maybe a gorgonzola flank steak. Ellie gave me a badass recipe for chili lime butter for roasted corn on the cob that is amazing. Go Blue!
Oh, thank god, the coffee maker finally beeped…
Americans are whacked out for sure. They are uneducated and wallow in their stupidity and self righteousness.
A collapse is needed to teach them a lesson, but with it hopefully the facists will sink not rise to power. Naomi Klien thinks they will rise with the opportunity – that is how they work – fear and and strike in the confusion and fog. We are in a fog now and there is much confusion.
I don’t think we can veer this nation to the right course… too much momentum heading the wrong way for too long. We as a nation have no understanding of anything but our our “ideas” – exceptionalism and such rubbish.
The economic “crisis” of capitalism should be a clarion call the examine capitalism, consumerism, debt financing, credit, risk management, wealth creation and all sorts of arcane notions which we take for granted.
We need to get back to a cooperative sustainable model for society – and this is not American as apple pie or guns and butter.
The system will crash despite bailouts of $1TT. But some will get rich on the way down. Very rich.
The watched coffee maker never beeps…
me and the town dump have a date with destiny…I’ll be back later. have a great day…
(((demi,))) you had me at “lap”
The world doesn’t revolve around me? But, Christy’s video is all about me me me me, me me me me.
I thought that was a tribute to the traveling Mr. McSavethe world.
Lotsa tomatoes on the East End of Wrong Island. Come for a sail and brink a bushel basket!
Thanks for dropping by and giving your perspective. Many Americans would be surprised to hear that some are flirting with fascism but then many Americans are embracing it with open arms, the Republican Party for example.
well, I suppose I could dust the top of the oven, and vacuum the inside….
I do make a fine batch of party-mix – just not lately.
Man, losing a job sucks… I’ll keep my fingers crossed that your irons in the fire pan out for you.
Sleeping with…hell…we’ve setup house and borne fascism a few children like neoconservativism and fundamentalist christian indoctrination to authoritarian ideals.
Fortunately little NC has ADD and FCIA’s grown up to have issues with lipstick.
Christy,
In anticipation of the holiday season, here’s a Cranberry Relish recipe similar to one we had every year at T’giving and Christmas.
And I know last year I saw a version that was almost identical, down to using an old fashioned meat grinder to make the relish.
Please don’t take me for an expert, but I think the adjective introduces a distinction without a difference. Contemporary Krupps, like the historical ones, would fall over themselves to support a genuinely powerful demagogue in a maimed and rudderless America.
And I make a mean veggie’s and dip platter.
Whoa. I need to bleach my computer now, but I just checked at Faux News and their instant poll even has Obama winning the debate 51-49 and only 27,204 votes cast. Gotta say I’m really surprised by that one. Doesn’t look like Faux fired up their base very much on that one.
Twisted — about twelve weeks ago I too got pushed out into the Arctic on that ice floe to employment oblivion. The bad news — at my age and in this economic clime, I may never work again. The good news — the big six-two is only 24 months off and the SS checks can start. And this is the first summer I’ve had off since ‘64 when I was fifteen. Make the best of it and keep twistin’ ‘em.
caught Mrs K8’s mention of the CNN gizmo very late in the debates – did anyone else watch it ?
mr cbl and I were like lab rats, we could not take our eyes off those lines -lol, and frankly if I were in the McCrazy cadre, that line for independents would have scared the stuffing out of me – he did not have a single moment where he won them over –
am thinking it was the “Pong” of such widgets and the other channels will follow suit with even better ones before the final debate
Indeed, Americans would seem to take pride in their ignorance. Anyone that is “educated” is immediately branded an “elitist.” They only value education in so far as it is an instrument for moving up the corporate ladder rather than a means for of creating critical thinking individuals.
After the monsoons we had yesterday the good news is that the Zinnias are still creating a colourful patch in the garden. The nasturtiums are still standing so we will have a nasturtium salad this evening with the, still producing, cucumbers. Life is good when you can still eat from the garden at the end of Sept in NH.
The two young kittens are out romping in the rain and shaking their paws and every step. I do wonder how they will do when the snow arrives…. tear the house apart no doubt.
Want to know where your $700 billion is going? Much of it is going to pay off the people (and governments) who made bets like this:
http://www.cnbc.com/id/26886123
When smart guys actually pay attention – they get rich on other people’s misery, in this case, our collective misery. Too bad there were none working for a regulatory agency in DC with the brains or the stones to stand up the renegade FED Chairman and President when they were adding more punch to the punchbowl from 2003 – 2005. ALL of this was avoidable. All of it. Follow the money to those entities in which David Rockefeller owns significant interest (JP Morgan/Chase, Goldman, Exxon/Mobil, etc.). He made money all the way up, and all the way down, and will own every valuable asset, as he picks off his competitors one by one – forcing you to pay for the toxic waste that Goldman and JP Morgan cast aside.
Guess who really calls all the shots and picks your “representatives” in DC… Follow the money, through the CFR, to David Rockefeller.

I’ve thought a lot about Ms. Klein’s “Shock Doctrine” over the last week. The abject failure of what some attempted to implement as Milton Freidman’s economic philosophy was paramount, of course, but also the attempt of McCain to pull the “shocking” long shot and somehow win the day in the midst of very serious economic debates was very reminiscent of her thesis.
Oh, Retirin’, I’m so sorry. ((((Retirin’))))
bummer Twisted, but glad you have irons in the fire.
And a tasty meal for a college football day. I’d love a nice flank steak for supper mMmm
Go Blue (& white heh heh heh)
Here’s the recipe for the chili lime butter
Ingredients:
4 ears of corn still in their husks
1/4 cup butter, softened
zest of one lime
juice of half a lime
1/4 teaspoon dried hot pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. To a cookie sheet add the corn and set in the middle of the oven. Cook for 35-40 minutes.
3. While the corn is roasting, make the chili butter. Combine the rest of the ingredients and mix until it’s well blended.
4. Put the butter in a bowl and refrigerate until the corn is roasted.
5. Carefully remove the husks and silk off the corn and serve immediately with the butter.
Good morning all.
Well the company I’m contracting at had layoffs on Thursday, and yesterday I found out that 2 of the permanent employees are now going to be working on this project I’m on when the next phase starts in a month or so. It was suppose to be other contractors. I’m naturally concerned that once the permanent employees get up to speed I’m getting the boot.
I need to get my ducks in a row. I’m going to use rubber ducks as opposed to real ones. They are much quieter, and easier to maintain.
being a salesman in a fairly specialized field means that I should be ok. I have a huge network of really good people pulling for me, so that helps tremendously. I also just closed several big deals that will give a decent financial cushion over the next few months. But I appreciate all the positive thoughts,& hope things work out for both of us.
Twisted — so sorry about the job news. Hope you find a better one, with better pay and benefits, and season football tickets somewhere as a bonus…
Just in case, make sure you have at least one Devil Duckie. You never know when you might need one!
Jefferson Quote:
“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people.
that was a wonderful story, demi. You people with parents are so lucky. Remember that.
Thanks Marion, I never knew they existed. What fun!
She may not be able to answer any of Katie’s questions coherently regarding foreign policy, but what would you expect of someone who would subject themselves to the swimsuit competition of a beauty pageant?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..29667.html
I mean it’s not like she’s going to grow up to be the President of the United States, right?
Thanks Marion but it’s actually been a positive thing. We won’t have money issues until next spring, the house is paid for in four months, the Mrs. still teaches twice a week, we’re no longer spending $500 a month on my work commute………All in all, we’re in a lot better shape than most and it’s been a great summer. Thanks for your concern though.
goin’ for the OT trifecta…
Does Pat Buchanan ever sleep?
(and why doesn’t he do it more – a *lot* more?)
Hey everyone, looking for a job IS my job and every time someone on the tee vee this week talked about businesses not being about to make payroll or how more people were probably going to be laid off, I’d shush them. Loudly.
The protest (on Wall Street) you won’t see on the government controlled TeeVee
Yes m’am. Why I took her stew AND a bouquet of flowers. We lost my dad last summer, so I do get it. :) I was just telling my husband that this current financial mess , er adjustment would have made him So Mad.
You too Twisted. In the interim — smoke it if you got it :-)
G’morning. I still rise early, but lately my first task is not my coffee (oh, lord, delayed gratification totally sucks!) but preparing David’s feeding tube for the day. It has come to that. I always struggle with how much and when to share about all of this here. It absolutely, completely consumes our waking and sleeping hours. And I don’t cook much any more. You’ve no idea how tantalizing all this wonderful food talk is!!
Watching the debate last night — actually, I finally walked away from it for a while — called into sharp focus the stark differences between the candidates. And apparently McCane is going for the folksy, been around forever which makes me wise beyond question, who’d you rather have a beer with candidate. He’s remade himself yet again. Presto change-o. Benign grampa, patting Obama on the head and smiling indulgently at his youth and inexperience. Well, that and his stupidity, for how often did he say, “Senator Obama doesn’t understand…”?
I thought Obama was magnificently adequate. Wooden in the way of Gore and Kerry and Mondale and, and, and. I wanted him to say something snappy and memorable. I know, I know. Shallow, shallow, shallow. But remember who the audience is. Sound-bite addicts. Need to feed ‘em a few crumbs whilst waxing presidential. Sorry — that’s as close to food as I can get this morning.
(((Martini))) and (((Five))). My son, too. May you all find new work that feeds your bank account and your souls!!
I personally prefer the “Blue Devil Duckie”. *g*
Gave several as family stocking stuffers a few years back.
From a diary on KOS
Shame on CNN for that device.
We watched the debate on the beeb. No pregame shows. No crossfire combat after. Just watched the debate.
Highly recommend BBC America for that…and a whole lot more.
For all my buds at the Lake:
a little Bill Withers…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wpof8s5ZTg
When Obama went after McCain about his failure to recognize Spain as an ally, it would have been an excellent time to reprise John McCain’s role in negotiating with Ferdinand II of Aragon at the onset of the Spanish Inquisition in 1478.
Seems like a missed opportunity if you ask me.
Hugs for barbara & David,
((and everyone else who needs one this morning))
ahh and Bill Withers, good choice.
we initially thought so too. but it was the amazing orgasmo for our inner oppo :D
mebbe the best part was once it was over and Wolfie started talkin’, it swan dived – too funny
Another missed an opportunity when talking about the border of Pakistan to say he knew Alexander the Great ….:)
{{{{{{{{Barbara and David}}}}}}}}
probably my favorite take on last night – Roseanne:
(((barbara))) (((David)))
barbara, I do hope you have friends or family who can come by to give you a chance to spend some time for yourself an hour or two. You are no less of a caregiver if you get some time now and then.
Yes, I was glued to the response meter, as well. That’s why I knew that while we may have been disappointed in Obama, he was actually doing quite well. Did you notice that personal attacks caused a negative reaction?
Here is a perspective on the credit debacle from the Canadian centre, neither left nor right. The author is Thomas Walkom:

“A cooperative sustainable model for society”. Yes.
The pandering to Israel throughout last nights debate was specifically targeted at Florida voters. Considering that Israel receives the vast majority of our foreign aid, it was comical to see both candidates dance around naming Israel when discussing reduction of foreign aid payments in our time of economic crisis. It occurs to me that if Fort Lauderdale were a country, it would share a border with Cuba and Israel.
My wife freezes them right in the bag.
Chasman: You are not the only one who sees us leaning toward fascism. Any intelligent American despises the Bush tactics (read Cheney tactics) since 9/11 as being what they are: an affront to our Constitution. The way to show the world our strength and resolve is NOT to roll back our freedoms, but to flaunt our freedoms. We have shown the world our fear not our passion for individual freedoms. Obama is the only answer in the upcoming election.
negative attacks -
yeppers – again, if I were his handlers (who may in fact be as deluded as he is) that falling green line would give me serious pause
and did everyone catch Senator Biden’s look when KO brought up the prospect of his upcoming debate ?!?!? – priceless
At TPM Election Central, Eric Kleefeld and Greg Sargent have posted CNN’s “internals” from last nights debate, stuff like “Who was more intelligent?” and “Who spent more time attackking his opponent?” and “Who would be the better leader?” Then at fivethirtyeight.com, Nate Silver has an excellent discussion of those internals.
It’s very interesting stuff for those who care about such things, i.e., most of us here.
Now, it’s time for to fire up the old grinder/brewer system at the eight-cup level.
Pizza and Popcorn for that Debate, I expect GOP spin to be nobody cares about VP so Sarah won’t hurt McCain.
Christy !
Leaves are changing up here … Reds and Yellows bursting in the misty rain … time for some fresh Apple Pie …

yeah, I’m back.

What a wonderful, multi-use item…. *g*
Here’s the REAL John McCain.
How in the world could McCoin negotiate with disagreeable foreign leaders when he cannot even look a nice democrat in the eye in a public debate?
He can’t. That’s why he has to require ‘conditions’, conditions meaning they have to agree with him before he can face them.
He has a well-known personality dysfunction that disqualifies him from the presidency.
His repeated admission that he did not win ‘miss congeniality’ in congress discloses his anxiety about his problem. He tries to make a virtue out of a defect. I think people get this at an emotional level and do not like it. I think that showed in the post debate polling.
I just don’t think there will be a veep debate. IMO, the whole ’suspend campaign’ b.s. was designed to get Sarah out of that debate. Maybe Sarah will backout, maybe they’ll manufacture a family crisis, I don’t know what they’re going to do but I have a feeling that the McCain team is working on cancelling that debate.
That is an excellent article and a must read for Americans
ESPECIALLY for
TV bobbleheads
Wall Streeters
Congress critters
And the council on foreign relations – CFR
Christy,
Thanks for the recipe(s).
Went over to visit my Mom and Dad a few days ago with our daughter. We had gone blueberry picking weeks ago (11 lbs.) and sent half of our efforts over to their house. Then the other day, my Dad happened to pass a road side stand and bought some organic cherries, plums, currents and grapes.
My Mom made an old family recipe from Scotland of a mixed berry pie. The base is mostly blueberry but you add cherries, fresh currents, plums and grapes.
I do not know why, but she had never made this pie for our family when we were kids. She was a purist and made cherry pie, blueberry pie, current tart, plum tart and (one time only) grape pie. (Might I add, a to-die-for apple pie that is famous with family and friends.)
Anyway, my daughter and I arrived about 40 minutes after the pie came out of the oven. The pie was the perfect not too hot not too cool — extra warm with a flaky organic whole wheat crust that was not dry — just buttery melt in your mouth perfect. The flavor was a perfect tart and sweet blend and the flavors were at their peak with the temp of the pie.
What a joyful surprise for us during our visit.
As we went home in the car (20 minute drive) my daughter pulled out a Redwall book she was reading. She started to giggle as she read to herself. I asked, “What was so funny?”
She read a passage from the book about a Scottish animal character who had just baked a berry pie. The recipe was described. The book characters took turns expressing their delight for the delicious, perfectly warm pie.
It was a life imitates art — art imitates life moment. At age 10, she delighted in the moment. And at my age, I did too!
When we got home, she called her Nana and read the passage to her. They agreed to have a Nana-granddaughter date this weekend and my Mom is giving her another baking lesson (a family tradition). Our daughter is going to learn the “family recipe” for berry pie.
(By the way, the “cooking lesson tradition” includes a recipe/scrap book where my Mom writes out a family recipe on a recipe card and puts it in the recipe scrap book and my husband or myself sneak in and take pictures of them cooking together to add to the recipe page.)
Oh, the comfort and loving nature of family food traditions.
I live just north of Atlanta and we have no gas and no rain. A local news station has a map of stations that have gas. The one nearest me had 30 minute lines starting at 4 this morning. Tomorrow my baby is going to be thirty and I’m treating him to brunch. I have enough gas to go back and forth but not much else.
They are uneducated and wallow in their stupidity and self righteousness.
Maybe so, but we’re smart enough to find multi uses for whipped cream. *g*
Just arrived after muchos blancos, Christy, double or treble your cranberries this year, they are a strong source of Vitamin C, with the season of flu approaching, there seldom is enough for a family with a peanut init. ;-)
back to read the comments.
What a sweet story and what memories your daughter will have to share someday with her family.
I hope you are right. I was really pleased this am to hear someone being interviewed say that, in part, she liked Obama more become McCrazy seemed to like war way more than she does. I am so glad that came across…Obama was great to get in the bomb/bomb/bomb stupidity.
I thought it was most absurd the way he kept saying to Obama about naive/don’t understand: Hey, Crazy, you are talking to Harvard scholar/President of the Law Review. The whole condescension was to be ridiculed and spurned.
She is fertile material for comedy. Let the show go on!
Morning All!
It is cooling down here at the 6,000 ft. level on the Colorado Plateau. No real color changes yet and the vultures(30 or 40 of them) that roost in the trees behind my house haven’t drifted south yet.
Still getting stuff from the garden and starting to work some beds that are heavy with clay with peat moss and compost. Just going to hang around home this weekend.
My wife learned how to do zucchini bread this last week which when hot out of the oven and with sufficient butter is super tasty.
Thanks for that. I love the scrap book tradition.
John McCain and his pal Palin might just drive the R’s into extinction, a job even Bush was unable to do.
If the adults take over we can cease the distraction of “religion” and family values and get back to running the country and creating a sustainable society on a fragile planet.
And no rain expected till 10/6. Will the gas problem be over soon?
Ducked away for some musin’ at my homeblog on Lions and Tigers. And where are the bears, you ask? Well, I can attest from the front yard in the tall timber, they do sheiss in the woods….
Yes, if foreign leaders don’t agree, it’s bombs away. Bush has the same problem with disagreement. He can’t deal with it, needs only yesmen around him. Pitiful and dangerous. It’s schoolyard bully stuff. Unfortunately many people identify with the bully. They grow up to be wingnuts. The bully always see himself as righeous, ie, the christian right.
My Mom found this cookbook scrapbook when our daughter was three and gave it to her for her birthday. It has a wooden cover (washable if dirtied from cooking) and laminate pages which are washable. I have yet to find another like it. It’s the best recipe book I have ever seen. But the filled pages inside now, are priceless.
I lost a butterfly bush and my azaleas and gardenia are really suffering because of lack of rain. I had a dentist appointment and made sure to do any errands that I could on the way and including watching how many miles I traveled. The dental hygenist said the gas shortage was teaching us all to conserve in a way that we should be doing anyway. I have a tad less that 1/4 of a tank and drive a honda and have not been running the ac.
One more thought on the debate. Obama didn’t hesitate mentioning the Spain gaffe or the ‘bomb, bomb Iran’ quote yet he didn’t mention the Keating 5. I think he’s saving the Keating 5 for the debate on economics.
Paul Newman has died.
Breaking News Paul Newman has died.
Per MSNBC…Paul Newman has died.
So is McPalin going to use the same technique when he meets world leaders of not looking them and demontrating contempt?
Paul Newman passed away in the night -
over $200 million to charity, staunch supporter of First Amendment and Civil Rights, the gearheads in this house are feeling the loss as well -
Cnn breaking news.
Opened a Paul Newman cabernet sauvignon last night and had a maudlin meltdown over the imminent passing of my Marley. Life’s little coincidences.
I met Paul Newman in Indiana while campaigning for Gene McCarthy. Yes, those eyes really were that blue.
And the twinkle carried through his beautiful work in film, and his charity work, and even his car racing down the road a bit at the Brainerd raceway.
A real star. A real hero. A real man.
Remember Newman’s appearance on Donahue when he talked about the idiocy of the nuclear arms race? We were a different country then.
The neighborhood that I used to live in was a maybe a mile from the Newman’s GA house. I always imagined bumping into him on this wonderful trail near my house and mentioned something to this effect to a neighbor. The neighbor laughed and said just go to Target, he’s always shopping in there. RIP
May Paul Newman rest in peace. What a great human being he was.
Very sad news about Paul Newman. I guess, though, that we can take some comfort in the fact that he had a long life that he shared with his wife of so many years, Joanne Woodward. Our sympathies are with her, I’m sure.
Kucinich up at the Podium on CSPAN
yes, he was wonderful.
I saw Paul Newman as well (saw, not met). His movie about hockey had a scene filmed in Utica, NY. They asked for people to come fill the hockey rink. I was just a young thing and rushed off to be in the crowd scene.
Someone shared a story about meeting Paul Newman and an ice cream cone. Was that you?

What the hell is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for if not this situation?
Call me crazy, but I think we could spare 20-30 million barrels out of the 700 million we’ve got put away to ease this shortage.
I don’t think the Ruskies are gonna invade us over the next 4-6 weeks it takes to put it back.
fyi – the senate is now apparently voting on the budget bill passed on wednesday by the house? feingold voted now, bless him, but everyone else i’ve heard so far is voting yes.
I seen ‘em ! in a small jewelry store, upper east side – just some slightly older, very handsome guy telling the jeweler how excited his “bride” was gonna be to have the little charm he was buying for her . . . he hit us with those eyes with a tip of the cap as he was leaving the store, dear gaia, the original tractor beam of hotness :D
What is the plan? Wait it out?
the reserve is oil, not gas – and i don’t think there is a shortage of oil?
Thom Hartmann was talking about the “shortage” on the radio on thurs. Said that they’re holding back because the real price of gas is being kept artificially low until after the election when it will pop up like a jack in the box. It’s all about market manipulation.
As for Paul Newman, where to begin. He was a mensch. Not many people belong in that category.
looks like a Continuing Resolution vote….
IIRC, the petroleum in the strategic reserve is not refined, and the bottleneck in the current shortage is the refining capacity.
My former boss had been the Newmans’ next door neighbor. Their daughters were good friends.
I loved the stories she would share. The Newmans’ were so extraordinary but led life in a way that gave “normalcy” to their children. Her stories inspired me. I use to say to my parents, if ever I found myself in a position of public notice, I would lead life like Paul and Joanne. Absolute pillars for their kids.
I was told this was a refinery shutdown problem because of Ike.
The supply problem is acute across swaths of the SE. As an example of its effects, the community college that serves the Asheville, NC area shut its doors on Tuesday. Many other activities in that area are cancelled.
But, of course, there are crickets in the MSM.
Several refineries are still down because of Ike and that’s where our gas comes from. There’s a panic in the air which causes some to sit in line every day just to tap off. Hopefully it will calm down in the next week or so.
Aw, man, that sucks big time. Sorry to hear that. Good luck in your job search.
My understanding is that the problem is the busted refineries around Galveston cannot produce enough to send up toward Atlanta. That’s why it’s a regional shortage and not nationwide.
Good morning everyone. I just got done reading the comments the Firepups made last night during the debate. How fun! I was feeling everyone’s ups & downs too as I laid in bed and watched it. One thing I took away from the debate is Barack Obama did great, McCain is an angry ole man who wants to stay on the same path as Bush, and Barack had to show Americans last night that he is not a “wild-eyed Muslim terrorist” as the wingers in our nation have made him out to be. He’s a calm man who understands the issues and knows which direction to take our country in. McCain? He’s still shooting at the world from the hip just like Bush. Scary.
I have a feeling the next debate is going to be much different. Both candidates did well and anyone on the fence about Barack saw him as more presidential than Johnny.
Beer, not ice cream. It was primary night gathering in Indianapolis.
ooops, my 147 replies to demi@131
(((demi))) What a nice story. I remember sitting on my granpa’s lap at the circus and sitting with him at the train station watching the trains come and go.
What do expect McCain to do next time? In order to win the election, he has to hit Obama hard but in doing so, he can’t look angry.
I have been dreading this. What a man.
the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is unrefined petrol…… it is my understanding that most of the gas refineries are still off line since Ike…. Of course there seems to be a news blackout on that too…..
how much anyone want to bet in a few months the Repugs are going to be running around yelling that there was no damage to the Oil industry from Ike…even though three oil platforms are missing….
I’m sure he’ll continue to do the same thing. He’s an angry ole man and knows that his party is to blame for the current mess our country is in. We are not better off after 8 years of the Bush Regime. This is a point Obama will have to drive home.
Okay, it was someone else then. This commenter had gone into an ice cream parlor, bought an ice cream cone and was so excitedly distracted by seeing Mr. Newman sitting at the counter, when she got to her car, she didn’t know where her cone was. Thinking she must have left it at the counter, she went back in to find it. Paul pointed at her purse, where she had put her ice cream.
I hope we’ll have a thread today to talk about Paul Newman’s films, roles. [hint, hint]
Morning SD. Trains and grampas.
Congratulations on your new ‘puter.
Yay, Beaker! I always identified with Beaker, don’t know why.
He can’t not look angry. He doesn’t know how.
Been thinking about Tweety’s Capt. Queeg remark. Also the character Cagney played in Mister Roberts comes to mind. Both petty Navy men who were into power and couldn’t brook anyone even questioning it. But there’s also a dash of Ensign Pulver—all talk and little action, and what action he did take was destructive.
Lots to chew on.
Barack Obama needs to take lessons from Joe Biden about RAISING THE VOICE at the right time. A few times last night, Barack should have screamed over Johnny’s psychotic rants. Johnny lied through his asshole last night and it was during those times the “Joe Biden Hell Raiser Voice” should have been used by Barack. I know I was using it! Poor television in my room. I hurt it’s feelings a couple of times. ;-)
This is what Republican economic policies have done to America…. we are now Korea!
Dad Who Left 9 Kids Says He Was Overwhelmed
That is pretty much the story about my two kids I adopted from Korea 21 years ago….
That is hysterical. Thanks.
Johnny’s “I’m a poor POW from Vietnam” closing was an eye rolling moment. It’s the only defense he has and it’s a lame one.
It was the filibusterer combined with the Faux shout over … which I don’t think McCain has ever used when on Faux……
There were a couple times last night that I thought McC was going to blow. Then the meds kicked in and he kept it under control. So disappointing.
My great grandpa used to drive trains, the steam engines. We have a mess of photos from those days of between 1898 to 1912. He was still around when I was a kid and I remember a great photo of a train he had above his rolltop desk.
You’re welcome. We sure have some great story tellers here at the Lake.
And, great List Makers too! Thank you for what You do. :)
Unfortunately because of Barack’s color he will be judged more harshly if he appears angry. On MSNBC a few minutes ago, McCain’s spokesman said that you could tell McCain was getting under Obama’s skin. wtf The spokesman then went on to say the debate was probably a draw. He then said that it is time to move on from the debate discussion to more important issues. The polling that McCain camp is seeing must be pretty bad if they want to move on so quickly.
Anyone read Begala’s book yet? I gather what surprises him most is not the temper as the vindictive nature.
Another thing I was watching was that droopy eye….. what I found was watching McCain blinking…… his eyes do not do it together….. I was seeing a single eye blink differently than another….. which is hard to explained since they are designed to blink as a pair….
W.C. Fields:
i believe it is this one:
I was a little concerned about how restrained Obama seemed last night. However, in retrospect, I think it was wise.
His demeanor, when contrasted with MCain’s, only made him seem more reasonable and presidential. I try not to ever watch McCain on TV. Was struck though by how nasty and condescending he is. Have not yet read Cliff’s book but my guess is we saw glimpses of “The Real McCain” in the debate.
Thought Lehrer did a good job.
Be alittle careful…I have an old eye injury. Any number of things can cause the blink not to be precise. The design is not always perfect.
Katy, I missed an opportunity yesterday to get the “picture worth a 1,000 words”. I didn’t have my camera with me, but as I was driving through Portland, Maine and was coming up to a well-known intersection where the homeless stand on the corner to beg for money, there was a tattered homeless guy (I’ve seen him there many times) standing next to a huge red Sen. Susan Collins campaign sign. Dammit! What a picture! Pretty much sums up the last 8 years of the Bush Regime and shows who is responsible: THE JACKBOOT LICKERS FOR GEORGE BUSH WHO GAVE HIM TAX CUTS FOR THE WEALTHY, AN ILLEGAL OCCUPATION OF IRAQ THAT HAS COST US AS MUCH AS THE BAILOUT WILL, AND ZERO OVERSIGHT OVER ALL OF IT!
Another picture I missed last year was when I was going over the bridge between Portland & South Portland and the US Flag was lowered to half staff because we had lost a Maine soldier. Coming up to the bridge to go under it from the left side was a big oil ship with the word “EXXON” on it. Didn’t have the camera! Dammit. Our soldiers are dying for the Oil Maggots.
McCain sucked last night. Yes, he answered the questions, but he did them all with lies, deceits, and lots of anger & making faces. He’s not sane, he’s not calm, and he is a danger to our country. I think Americans with a brain in their head realized that and this could be why the McCain camp IS wanting to move on.
Did McC re-release his “McCain wins the Debate” banner or did the early release prevent that?
When I was in the Athens Greece Airport in July…..I went to the newsstand to buy something and looked at the book stand of English books….. on the top shelf was Obama’s two books and right next to them was Media Matters book on McCain…. no others….. just those three….. Wish I had thought to take a picture now…..
Exactly…if Obama had shouted or gotten strident, you could expect that shot to be inserted into Rethug attack ads between now and election day… the dogwhistle picture.
Instead, Obama deflected McShame’s bullying tactics and fruitless attempts to distract.
Says it all that the McCain people want to move the discussion on. They know they lost. Badly.
Homework for Thursday–Matt Taibbi’s genius article on Palin in the latest Rolling Stone magazine.
Per Nate Silver (fivethirtyeight.com), McCain won with the pundits but lost with the public — a very interesting split, because it illustrates the chasm between The Village and the nation. Those fools think they know the people and purport to speak for them and are nearly always wrong, as Glenzilla documents again and again and again.
I’m clearly in the Obama camp in this election. But at the debate, my sense was McCain had the upper hand. Obama needs some debate pointers before the next one.
NEVER say, “John is right” even if you think so. He said that so many times that I wanted to scream.
Obama needs to get more forceful in his presentations and even interrupt John and point out his lies. Show some incredulity even.
I hope he gets the message for the next debate.
I was evaluating this as a nurse who used to work in head and neck cancer unit….. as someone who knows the extensive radical surgery McCain had in 2000…. vs is this a new issue…… from what I can evaluate no one has noticed this before the last few months……
Maher had a good line. He said “Normally, when a 72 year old man starts behaving like this, the kids start calling nursing homes…”
Like old man Broder going into a coffee shop and talking with folks then writing how in touch he is with real people. Cokie will be all a gaga Sunday, saying how good McSFB was and how bad Obama was.
Exactly. The neck drooling knuckle dragging base was mightily impressed with McCain last night for sure. The rest of the country (the sane part) was not. I don’t know about you but I was air-boxing McCain last night (mods, I swear I never touched the man and am not advocating anyone to do it!). McCain last night was exactly the same kind of neocon who comes to my blog each and every week. They’re stupid, they’re angry, and when it gets too tough for them, they pull out a bunch of lies from their assholes, and then get all pissy when myself or someone asks for proof (links) to support their “facts”. Amusing, but Americans are tired of these jerks. McCain was King of the Jerks last night for sure.
I think that the thing tha killed McCain with the public was the fake smile on his face while Obama was talking. He looked like a cartoon character, e.g., the Joker. It was somewhere between a fake smile and an evil smirk.
WaMu holds my mortgage which I have no clue how that little detail is going to be handled but to hear this…… OMG…… must be nice work when you get it…
Exactly! Barack Obama needs to find the angry old man with dementia at the local nursing home to practice with for the next debate. ;-)
yes. i was confused. reid is now saying that there will be one more vote today, and that they hope to have a bailout plan for a vote tomorrow, i think.
Obama is Obama
He has a style which I see as persuasive while not overwhelming.
Listening to the debate on the radio, McCain came off more polished and confident than I might have expected, and I found myself wanting Obama to respond more forcefully to the attacks. But, I think Obama won by *not* doing so.
Much of the problem with Gore’s campaign was his attempts to behave in a manner which was personally uncomfortable. McCain is personally comfortable in the attack mode and talking himself with false modesty.
Obama is evidently accustomed to being the smartest person in a dialog, and does not beat you over the head with it.
A more forcefull style would not have persuaded anyone who believes McCain’s assertion that the war is winnable on his terms, or that he has ever articulated what winning actually means.
BUt Obama *could* have damaged himself
McCain attempted to redefine the discussion on his terms and Obama payed prevent defense – which is what you do when you are winning.
So far McCain’s Hail Mary passes have been overturned.
Arianna surveys the chattering class in this headline for anyone needing a lift :D
love this from Roseanne:
I just read one of my fav actors passed through, paul newman
loved that man, ya gotta see “someone up there likes me”
rest easy paul, rest well
He looked old. I don’t have hdtv and a fairly old tv set and he looked old on mine.
Sorry I wasn’t around to reply to responses of my comment @133; had to take the dog out on her morning trip to the park (extended weekend version).
1. Didn’t know the reserve’s oil was unrefined, but that fact leads to–
2. I’ve long held that the govt. should have it’s own refineries, anyway.
After all, shutting down refineries is how the oil companies have gamed the system over the last few years.
lol
Does McCain ever show what looks like a genuine smile? I have not seen one…..but maybe am prejudiced by my opinion of the man.
It’s more a snarl. And sometimes that snarl appears while he’s talking. I find it unsettling and I don’t think I’m alone.
Christy,
Frightened! We, my husband and brother-in-law, are so close to making our business profitable, but the on-going financial situation may very well lead us to bankruptcy. Unless people that have backed away from prior commitments, because of fear in the market, start back up again, our business is doomed. Thankfully, we no longer have the SBA loan (9 years of sheer terror) that would also have us loosing our house. As is, we will only lose a bunch of money and 15 years of effort.
Have I mentioned by chance, I HATE George W. Bush. Sorry, if I left that out along the way.
If you want a surprising at least for me evaluation of the debate, try this one by Mark Halperin.

Leaked: John McCain’s Debate Reminders to Himself
Yes, lots of photos of him, Lindsay and JoeLie yukking it up. Those photos make me puke.
Anyone other than me treat the debate like a really scary movie?
Lights on, blanky fort, and plenty of hiding behind things.
That Freddy McSame character scares the bejeebers out of me.
Aaargh! I just went to turn out the horses and pick the stalls. The problem is there was nothing to pick in the stall for my wife’s 20 year old quarterhorse. Not good; there usually are 4-6 good sized “piles”. He doesn’t look uncomfortable, but I have the vet on the way. She’s really attached to this guy…
My young McSFB supporter at work is off in some Mexican city with his bride to be so I’ll have to wait until he gets back before I can ask if he watched the debate (were I in his place it’d be, “What debate?”) Earlier in the week he was in showing off this huge $14K diamond ring. I’m an emerald or ruby guy, though. I remember shops in Bangkok where uncut gems filled large containers. It was like being in the grotto where Edmond Dantes found his treasure.
Morning, Christy.
what we SHOULD be doing is PROHIBITING the sale of american oil on the open market, it needs to be sold to US at a set profit, if the refinery doesn’t want that profit we’ll give it to someone else
we need to pool this oil and then buy what we don’t need on the open market
we would then cost average the price we pay at the pump…it is REDICULOUS we have to compete for OUR stuff against china.
oil is NOT the refineries, it’s OURS, they get to sell it for US, it is not theirs.
we need to do more in the feild of keeping the profit close, all they are entitled to is a fair profit, NOT a mega profit
it’s not their stuff

Point by point refutation of her ‘management skills’
Thanks Hugh for that link. Enjoyed the analysis. Also was especially intrigued by the photo.
McCain must have been wearing the senatorial equivalent of platform oxfords! The discrepancy is his height compared to Obama’s is much greater is reality — sans accoutrement.
Tucker Bounds desperately spinning on MNSBC enabled by their resident Sarah Palin, aka Alex Witt.
Meanwhile, ABC refused to interview Biden last night because Palin would not appear. That’s a story.
Thank Cookies (AKA Chocolate Chip Cookies)
NOT DIET by any means
In the military, gifts of pretty much any monetary value were forbidden. I started making batches of this recipe as a way to say thanks. One day I walked by the guys on a smoke break and the communications guys looked really down. When one of my guys came back to the office, I asked about it. He said they worked their butt off for the Colonel and not one word of thanks did they get. I brought these cookies in the next day and told that the Colonel may not appreciate them, but we did.
Chocolate Chip Recipe
12 tbsp butter, softened
1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
½ cup granulated sugar
2 eggs, lightly beaten (I beat in a separate bowl, just enough to break up the yolks)
2 ¼ cups sifted flour
½ teaspoon salt
1 tsp. baking powder (it calls for Baking soda, but I use Baking Powder instead)
1 ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (if it is really dry I add just a smidgen more to finish moisturing the batter.)
1 cup chopped nuts (I personally don’t put these in)
6 oz semisweet chocolate bits (I use milk chocolate chips and put in what looks right)
Cream the butter and sugars together, (I do it by hand). Add the eggs. Sift together the dry ingrediants and add them to the mixture, then add the vanilla, nuts and chocolate bits. Drop the dough by spoonfuls onto baking sheets. Bake in a preheated 375 F. degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cookies are firm and lightly colored.
Recipe out of the Time-Life Cake and Cookies book, from Annette Laslett Ross and Jean Adams Disney, “The Art of Making Good Cookies Plain and Fancy”.
McCain’s health appears to be degenerating rather rapidly. I sense a significant difference now from the beginning of the primaries.
Costco’s PUMPKIN PIE is about to start their season as well. They’ve never lasted long enough to freeze.
Kings and cohorts n colonial crime mercantiled our forefathers many a time, in 200 plus years we have become that which we severed out ties from. This aristocrat assault on the republic is enabled by our instilled addiction to fossil fuels, lining the pockets of energy corporate interests which have dictated US foreign policy for many years. Just kind of funny, Picken’s talks of 700 billion in energy costs transfered via the hands of energy corporations and now a 800 billion dollar WS bailout? This is Jefferson’s worst fear for America realized. The threat to liberty “from within” by powerful corporate interests in the lust for endless profit. Just like the King and his corporate cohorts in colonial crime!
He can show his diamonds all he wants, but the reality is, George Bush isn’t covering his back. The neocons who pretend to be the richest in the room don’t understand this concept yet and probably never will. ;-)
Oil from US soil is about 3% of the world total. We use 25% of the world total. Our 3% doesn’t amount to squat in the overall scheme of things.
I agree, however we do NOT need to be putting it on the market and competing against ourselves for our own stuff
I understand it’s a drop in the bucket but let me tell you, I HATE having to bid on my own stuff so I can line the pockets of cheney and company
He was not happy that I was not impressed by his rock. Personally, I’d rather have a slingshot in my back pocket.
Good Morning All, Took me a while to get through the above discussions
I had some thoughts to share on my observations of the debate. I thought some of McShames training as a boxer was evident in his style. I watched upstairs on the high def tv looking for the eye thing but didn’t notice it. His rapid eye blinking drove me crazy especially when contrasted to Obama and especially Lehrer. I thought that McShame left Obama a slew of openings that were not taken especially during the economic segment. Obama will get another shot at this in the next debate. McShame was extremely rude, this was supposed to be a confrontational where the candidates talk to each other; Lehrer tried to get it there but McShame was afraid to look Obama in the eye as he lied.
Somebody here last night said s/he didn’t like the format. I thought it was great. A vast improvement over the gotcha style of previous debates. The absolute lack of eye contact was stunning. I want to look for vids showing him turning his head cuz I’m beginning to think he doesn’t have full ROM in his neck/shoulder area.
He looked old on HD despite the $5200+ plus make up
I’m with you, I loved the format, this was much more a debate then the past “presidential debates” that I’ve watched, I like the free wheeling.
I didn’t like the fact that most of the time both obama and mccain were speaking to the lead, they should have spoken to the camera or to the oponent, not the moderator
I was disappointed he made up his the height advantage Obama has over him, possibly with prosthetics, possibly with friendly camera angles but man I thought Obama would tower over him and was disappointed McCain overcame that
No one seems to be asking what are we going to do when it is gone just drill here dril now screw tomorrow. btw has anyone seen anything on oil spills as a result of Ike
Over the years in owning my housecleaning company, I’ve had some customers treat me like dirt so they can make themselves feel better. Almost always it’s done by people who THINK they’are rich (maybe a combined income of $80,000 with tons of bills), when really, they’re just wannabees who are part of the problem today: MATERIALISM CREATES DEBT.
Just ignore people like that, SD. In the end, those of us who have had to survive each week to keep afloat will be the ones who will actually be able to survive. It’s the ones who have been keeping up with the Smith’s who will be mortified to have to survive and will have a hard time doing it! We’ll just laugh at them. ;-) I know I already do.
From the positioning of the lecturns it appeared that he didnt have to turn that much.
the alternative energy industry is the pathway to our economic recovery, it can be our new deal, it can be our space program, it will energize the economy, investment, ouor infrastructure and it will bring QUALITY jobs back home
we have to also bring back protectionism, we CANNOT allow products sold in this country that come from slave and child labor, that come from countries that allow industry to dump their cancer in my kids air
those products MUST be tariffed and we NEED to create an equal playing field if our economy is to recover
Katymine,
The Spokesman-Review reported today that JP Morgan Chase will continue to process mortgages the same as has been occuring. All indications that unless you had stock in WaMu or have a WaMu and JP Morgan Chase bank near each other, you may not notice much of anything.
Looks like our mortgages will just continue as they have been.
I can’t ignore ‘em. Personality trait. I can’t resist stickin’ it to ‘em. This guy wears nothing but silk. He draws me like a fly to a corpse. Plus I really want to turn this guy. He says he wants to cry every time he talks to me. Reality is a hard master.
Not to worry. Palin is waiting in the wings. Just hope McCain has a food taster with Palin on deck.
Has anyone heard anything about the mock press conference and mock debates that McSames campaign has run with Palin? Thought I heard that they were complete disaters. Palin’s not ready for prime time. Disgusting that ABC refused to interview Biden after the debates because they couldn’t interview Palin. I just wish there were a broadcast network that would make the corporate media the story. Stick a microphone in Gibson’s face and ask point blank why ABC made the decision to snub Biden just because the Republiclans are keeping Palin under wraps. Not only is the Republican Party America’s biggest problem but a complicit, cynical and corrupt corporate media.
I met Paul Newman years ago, back in the 70’s, not long after Butch Cassidy and The Sting. My BF and I were camping in our VW microbus and it threw a rod and penniless DFH’s such as we were, we had to rebuild it in the backyard of some DFH’s in Fairfield, CT. I had to hitch to a foreign car parts place, and there, grimy with grease and somewhat disheveled, I met Paul Newman (a well known gearhead).
He took amused pity on my situation (spending my vaca fixing a freaking car) and gave me a ride back in the 1967 VW Beetle he had that had a Porsche 912 engine. He was utterly charming to a grubby, starstruck kid, and I have dined out on that story for 30 years…
I heard they closed down Limerock racetrack in western CT for him a few weeks ago, so he could take some last laps. Damn. Damn…
As a pasionate singer of classic choral music. Who has such Beethoven’s 9th a number of times.
GOD I LOVED THAT CLIP.
Jim Henson was a genus.
You just made my day.
