Pelosi wants a deal by tonight

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) just told a group of reporters gathered outside her office that she would like negotiators to produce an agreement on the economic rescue package by tonight so members had time to digest it, Politico’s Marty Kady reports from the scrum.

Pelosi made her remarks as the negotiators streamed into her office, and that group is much bigger than expected; instead of just the four principals, a number of other prominent Democrats, including Ways and Means Chairman Charles B. Rangel (N.Y.), Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus (Mont.), Senate Budget Chairman Kent Conrad (N.D.) and New York Sen. Chuck Schumer also entered the meeting.

This leaves House Minority Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri and New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg severely outnumbered as the only Republicans in the room. Oh yeah, and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. But he’s been at loggerheads with the House GOP for the last week, so he they might not be singing from the same songbook on this one.

Negotiators reach tentative deal on rescue plan

House and Senate negotiators have reached tentative agreement on a financial rescue plan after a marathon Capitol negotiating session that started Saturday afternoon and stretched into early Sunday morning.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said their “breakthrough” still had to be “committed to paper,” a process that was expected to continue through the night.

“We have something verbal,” said Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.).

Republican Whip Roy Blunt, the chief negotiator for House Republicans, said he was “looking forward to what we’re going to see on paper” and was optimistic that it would be something House Republicans could support.

Said Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson: “We’ve been working very hard on this and we’ve made great progress toward a deal which will work and will be effective in the marketplace and effective for all Americans . . . .We’ve still got a lot to do to finalize it, but I think we’re there.”

The plan would likely give Paulson a relatively free hand accessing the first $350 billion of the $700 billion he sought. It was not clear when the remaining $350 billion would become available, but Treasury apparently agreed that a future Congress could block its release though a joint resolution signed by the president.

The online NYT Sunday edition has a stunning front page story on McCain’s best friends in the gambling industry with timelines, graphs, photographs and all that stuff – and did I mention Jack Abranoff?

Well, if her responses to the questions were anything like the “what do you think about a ban on foreign sales of our oil” or the “what about the proximity to Russia gives you foreign policy experience” answers – I believe it.

He is a great humanitarian with empathy for all. Obama has that character and made the decision to pursue similar goals as Paul Newman. Using Paul’s legacy to pursue his goals as a Democrats would be a wise use of his contributions. Correct me if I am wrong.

DOJ Report On U.S. Attorney Firings To Be Issued Monday

The Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General will on Monday morning release on its website its report into the firing of eight U.S. attorneys, according to David Iglesias, one of the former U.S. attorneys whose firing is at issue.

Iglesias told TPMmuckraker that he had been notified about the report’s imminent release by Mark Masling, one of the investigators on the case. Iglesias said Masling told him that the report, which has been in the works since March 2007, is “very long” but wouldn’t offer further details.

The probe, which centers on the firing of Iglesias and seven other U.S. attorneys, expanded to address allegations that a DOJ official, Monica Goodling, illegally took party affiliation into account in the hiring and firing federal prosecutors.

In July, Iglesias made some predictions about the reports conclusions, telling Harper’s:

I expect them to conclude that there is sufficient evidence to show that former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and former Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty committed perjury in their statements before Congressional committees and investigators.

I am not a materialistic person…but…I loved that car.

The only good thing about losing it, is the fact that it was a bomb like the Pinto. Ford managed to keep that fact hidden for many years. I didn’t know about it until someone told me a few years, ago. So, I was lucky because my kids and I made many long trips together in that car.

Burn victims were bought off and silenced. A medal bar to protect the gas tank would have solved the problem.

Can’t remember who…some TV program interviewed some burn victims. Just like the Pinto. A rear end collision and boom.

Slant 6 hoss . . . parental units had a NEW ‘71 I ended up with at one point in my life.

It was a cop test model, with power steering and beefed up brakes and suspensions.

The bronze paint was horrid!!! LOLOLOLOL

Lasted with the same motor, tranny and drive train up to past 200K miles.

I sold it off for $500 in ‘98, I think . . . mighta been ‘99. It was hell here in Sacto, w/out AC. *G*

Out of all cars and trucks I’ve ever owned, if I had to get to work, that one puppy got me there with NO failures in my time with it . . . I think I had it for 10 years, too . . . . it was always there to run. Simple, easy, and safe.

They don’t make them like that, anymore . . .

And of course, McQueen in Sand Pebbles, one of the greatest movies ever done IMHO, was incredible.

But that’s what McQueen, Newman, and a handful of others did . . . . on that silver screen. Froze us, held us, and left us coming out of the theatre blinking and wondering, WTF . . . . we were changed from their performances.

And Mr. Newman, he took it offscreen, and changed people, places and lives for the better.

Presumably, you meant “slant 6.” An excellent engine. Very rugged and easy to work on. On my recommendation, my dad bought a 1960 Doge Dart with that engine, the first year it was out.

My typo 6 not 5. I bought one in 79. Was easy to work on lotsa room to get to the timing belt. No glamour all go and good on gas. My dad had a dealership in Miami Shores.
I have the big ford 440 and had the big dodge 460 ( had it factory rebuilt. Pulled 4 cords of wet firewood up the bakc side of Tahoe. From a standing start in sand it wouild do a u turn with a loaded 16′ long 6′ high and wide enclosed trailer. The differential was low so all the power was applied in low gear. Hauled a lot up and down CA HWY 89 on black ice.

Sand Pebbles grabbed me too…he did a great swabbie. Yeah he also keep us coming back for more with our dollars. then turned around and gave it back. Where do we find another class act?

You could put that truck (1 ton) in low and ride the ice down the canyon. In Tahoe I stopped on the lake highway and the rig just slid sideways. Would never consider doing that again.

My tools started to get bigger which made maintaining the equipment more interesting. Heavier sockets and jacks. Cooper 10 ply tires still great.
