The only thing the Republicans could do would be to get Palin to resign, and should McCain win in November (Heaven Forbid) on his own, then there would be a vacancy in the VP position, which would be dealt with after January by the constitutional process. He would nominate, and the House and Senate would independently hold a hearing on the fitness of the nominee, and then vote and a majority would be required in each house.

By the way, the Musical Comedy about a clearly unprepared young floozy being nominated for Vice President has already been done — in about 1928. The Music is by George Gershwin, lyrics by Ira. “Of Thee I Sing” has just wonderful music, and the individual songs can still be heard in many venues, though the work is rarely performed as a whole. There is a black and white version from the 30’s — and in the 70’s they remade it for Television, and issued an LP. Critics all thought the plot was just silly (it resolves with the VP getting off the ticket because she falls in love with the Presidential Candidate, Wintergreen. The Musical’s last major song before the reprise is “I’m about to be a Mother”,), but the TV critics were delighted with the revival of the music. Those who did the TV version dug around in long forgotten archives and found material that had been dropped in the original Broadway production, and added it back in — just wonderful Gershwin music long forgotten out of his composer’s trunk.

TV could do a great service, and find the video of that production of “Of Thee I Sing” and do a revival in the next week or so.

In the TV Video version, Carroll O’Connor (Archie Bunker) plays the lead, the Presidential Nominee Wintergreen, and Cloris Leachman plays Miss Devereaux, (the VP pick).

By the way, the Broadway version won the Pulitizer in 1932 — given three ways, to both Gershwin’s and to George S. Kaufman, who wrote the book and produced the Musical on Broadway.
