If I had a better understanding of economics and whatever in the hell is going on with this bill, I would. But I’m utterly lost on most finance issues, which is why I rarely write about them from the econ perspective if I can help it. Poverty, I get — I’ve had family and friends and clients live with it. But broader econ is not my bailiwick.

The thing is, there are always ups and downs. Politicians do what they do, sometimes the results are something we like — often, not even close to what we’d like. It has always been this way. Always.

But having an organized answer to the status quo – or folks pushing back on particular issues like we’ve been able to do on FISA, on habeas, on a whole host of other things the past few years really has opened some eyes on the Hill. Would that it had opened a lot more, but we’re working on it. In the meantime, the fight continues on whatever other issue may show up…and I’m sure Ian and others will have more coherent economic thoughts than I could possibly provide.

At the moment, I’m just baffled at what in the hell they think they are doing. It’s got that “well, we have to do something, even if it sucks” feel that FISA did all over again. Totally baffling to me.

Foreclosures were up a steep 79% in 2007, reaching just over 1% of mortgages. The numbers are up again so far in 2008 (though not as steeply). We could top 2% in default this year or next. There are some expectations that foreclosures could triple from today’s historically high levels, meaning ultimately 3% of mortgages could be in trouble.

And that’s where we get that math problem. 1% of all mortgages — the amount now in default — comes out to $111 billion. Triple that, and you’ve got $333 billion. Let’s round that up to $350 billion. So even if we reach the point where three percent of all mortgages are in foreclosure, the total dollars to flat out buy all those mortgages would be half of what the Bush-Paulson-McCain plan calls for.

Then we need to factor in that a purchased mortgage isn’t worth zero. After all, these documents come with property attached. Even with home prices falling and some of the homes lying around unsold, it’s safe to assume that some portion of these values could be recovered. In the S&L crisis, about 70% of asset value was recovered, but let’s say we don’t do that well. Let’s say we hit 50%. Then the real outlay for taxpayers would be around $175 billion.

Which, frankly, is a number that Wall Street should be able to handle without our help. After all, the top firms on Wall Steet payed out $120 billion in bonuses alone between 2000 and 2006. If they’ve got that kind of mad money, why do they need us to step in now? And why do they need twice as much as all the mortgages that are even likely to implode?

In going for $700 billion, what the Bush administration is saying is:

* Our pals on the street have been very creative in coming up with instruments in which they’ve entangled bad mortgages with good mortgages, and rather than untangle them, would rather we keep them from all that difficult paperwork.

* Oh, and while we’re at it, we might as well buy up a chunk of the swaps and derivatives that were created in an unregulated shadow market so they could double-triple-quadruple dip on the value of these loans

i suppose i should thank the Democrats of the 110th Congress. they’ve taught me a lot. for example, i used to think that oversight implied accountability. now i understand that it does nothing of the kind. oversight involves whining about the bad things the other party has done. that is all.

How could they when it was made up? Like the rest of the Paulson plan I should say. Since the Congressional plans were based on the Paulson plan, I don’t have a lot of hope for this “compromise” but I will wait until I see the details. I wish the Congress would just put documents like this up on the web in a timely fashion but then I remember that it doesn’t precisely because members don’t want us to have a chance to see and critique it before they vote on it.

In reading the link about the swedish plan their bailout was 7.5% of GDP. This looks similar maybe closer to 8%

My guess is from some whispers I’m hearing is that the rush is due to liquidity issues. It’s a sop/good faith gesture to banks (many of them foreign) to make certain that lending among banks continues.

My own personal opinion is that this financial mess is worse than we have been told. The US market is a house of cards and foreign banks are no longer “playing nice”.

There is a lot of money from those sophisticated financial instruments that was virtually looted and moved offshore. Also, down the road, we’ll see the more personal/instituional losses showing up in retirement account statments and reduced pension funding etc.

To me, this is just a “propping up” exercise to kick the can down the road until after the election.

In our case it was take away pizza and he had it in the bottom oven to stay warm. My guess is he forgot it was still there.

RE: suspending campaigns – as to TV ads – Most if not all TV stations have a 2 day to 7 day period before they will stop an advertising schedule (impossible to re-sell the time in such a short time period). So you will continue to see McCain’s ads.

They let 9/11 happen. They let Libby off for disclosing Plame’s work. They see no reason to get rid of Bush. They care about their jobs more than actually upholding the Constitution.

For example, I read yesterday that in Washington there are some Republicans who are trying to get the word “Republican” removed from the ballots for the upcoming election. They just want the power. They don’t want the people to REALLY know what they stand for and right now the word “Republican” is a hindrance. They’d put “Satanist” on the ballot if that’s what the public was electing — all to get into office.
