“Witchcraft is a sad reality in many parts of Africa, resulting in scores of deaths in Kenya over the past two decades. Bishop Muthee’s blessing, then, was simply a reflection of his cultural understanding of evil. While others are not obliged to accept his interpretation, all can be expected to respect it. More than that—Muthee should be hailed for asking God to shield Palin from harmful forces, however they may be manifested. And for this he is mocked and Palin ridiculed?
“We know that many cultural elites have a hard time embracing religion, but is it too much to ask that they at least show some manners when discussing subjects which most Americans hold dear?”
That would be all well and good if the "witchcraft" that Pastor Muthee became famous for pursuing were truly some kind of Dark Art from the Dark Continent, bent on the persecution of Christians (though it would be good of him to present some actual examples of said "witches" too).
But Muthee’s pursuit of "witchcraft" had a more familial resemblance to Salem. From the Times of London:
According to the Christian Science Monitor, six months of fervent prayer and research identified the source of the witchcraft as a local woman called Mama Jane, who ran a “divination” centre called the Emmanuel Clinic.
Her alleged involvement in fortune-telling and the fact that she lived near the site of a number of fatal car accidents led Pastor Muthee to publicly declare her a witch responsible for the town’s ills, and order her to offer her up her soul for salvation or leave Kiambu.
Says the Monitor, “Muthee held a crusade that “brought about 200 people to Christ”.” They set up round-the-clock prayer intercession in the basement of a grocery store and eventually, says the pastor “the demonic influence – the ‘principality’ over Kiambu –was broken”, and Mama Jane fled the town.
According to accounts of the witchhunt circulated on evangelical websites such as Prayer Links Ministries, after Pastor Muthee declared Mama Jane a witch, the townspeople became suspicious and began to turn on her, demanding that she be stoned. Public outrage eventually led the police to raid her home, where they fired gunshots, killing a pet python which they believed to be a demon.
After Mama Jane was questioned by police – and released – she decided it was time to leave town, the account says.
So when Pastor Muthee prays for Sarah Palin’s protection from "the power of witchcraft," it is with a, shall we say, expansive view of what constitutes "witchcraft." And when he demands we "crush the python spirit" and "step on its neck," you have to wonder whose necks they’re talking about. Democrats? Lyda Green? Anyone who opposes Sarah Palin and her "infiltration" of the "political realm"?
And when Bill Donohue defends a "witchhunt" of the kind Muthee purused in Kenya … well, it’s not very persuasive. After all, this is the same guy who insisted that Mel Gibson wasn’t really anti-Semitic.

McCain darksided long before he met Palin.
wow. batshit nuts. I can’t even really comment on this I’m so upset
The Shrilla from Wasilla story just keeps getting weirder and weirder. Just saw this in an AP article:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…..l_pr/palin
Ailin’s parents are experts on rat control? No wonder they’re Repubs.
Remember though, Dan Quayle was actually elected as the VP. It is possible enough Americans could vote for this charlatan as our VP. Sad but true.
The guy sounds like a text book Republican.
Maybe we could have saved a lot of time, money and destruction if we had just sent Rev. Muthee over to say a few prayers against witchcraft in Saddamland.
If Palin meets with Cheney, will she burst into flames?
Scientists alter the hypothesis when the does not match the facts.
The Religious alter the facts when dogma does not match the facts.
The R ticket in 2016 will be Jindal/Palin (order yet to be determined). Exorcists and witches oh my!
Scientists alter the hypothesis when ti does not match the facts.
The Religious alter the facts when dogma does not match the facts.
Better :-)
And to think people used to recall “Senator McCarthy” when they heard the phrase “political witchhunt”!!!
Today’s Republican Party — a bridge to the Dark Ages! [For REAL!!!]
I truly hope that Biden nails her on women’s issues on which she totally sucks. This is supposedly why she was chosen (to get the female vote) and she doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
Donahue is ordinarily so reasonable, I wonder if he might be possessed?
I just heard on the radio that basically all goopers are against any “bail out” plan unless it is “negotiated” by McFuckinSame. The balls of these people now wanting to paint McSame as the bloody saint is despicable. Sorry Dave et al for being OT but damn I am really getting fed up with the evilness (a word?) of these people.
Perhaps Pastor Muthee can get a job as a pastor in one of those snake handling churches in Georgia or Alabama.
Palin is a Cheney doppelganger.
So where is slant head on this?
Why isn’t Faux going nuts 24/7 on this…. Oh…. that’s right ….. how could I forget?
I’m going to be sick.
Might be a good test of his sincerity. If the snakes don’t bite him, he must be a witch.
Donohue’s been re-possessed. goD foreclosed on his soul. Times are tough after all…
I did hear the morning host on the LA Rush station praising McCain effusively for his brilliant move today.
And Rev Jeremiah Wright who has experienced the worst in American racism and has devoted his life to helping others?
Like there are none on Florida! Come on bro!
IN Florida
I’m rather surprised that Palin’s church allows members of African descent through the door, let alone in a position of power.
Bill Donohue is quite a guy. It takes a particularly overbearing, anti-intellectual and toadying attitude to transubstantiate terms like “cultural elites” into hate speech.
Religion is a magic device for turning unanswerable questions into unquestionable answers.
I came across this image of Sarah as a teen – which might serve to explain the need for the “witch-be-gone” exorcism.
Don’t doubt it a bit. They just don’t get the press. Apparently don’t get bitten very often either.
Or public restrooms in Minnesota, for that matter.
Not to get knit picky, but, uh, can you tell me those important issues she doesn’t suck at.
Why don’t they just hunt the snakes and witches on Wall Street then?
Also there is a huge anti-Semitic compenent to this Muthee freak. ABC says reports:
If Pastor Muthee ever meets Samantha Stevens, I hope she turns him into a (different kind of) toad.
I’m sure they’d let in ANY black person who worships right-wing doctrine. There’s an ugly term for that in the secular world: Uncle Tom. I’m not sure what the term is in the fascist branch of the ecclesiastical universe.
“Palin Witch Project.”
America’s women respond to the loss of their own reproductive rights.
My Teevee ran a show about two white guys living with a tribe in Papua New Guinea. The tribe believed that a witch was making people in the town sick. They basically chased the poor girl out of town. Is that a cultural phenomenon present in Africa too, I wonder?
I have relatives in France and Italy and they can’t believe the level of superstition, xenophobia, intolerance and religious hysteria there is in the U.S.. They see it as truly shocking and troubling.
I like that!
someone’s comment the other night about all the pain and suffering monsters like Muthee have wrought got me to do a little reading – there are horror stories out there – widows, elderly, and now children seem to be the preferred target
yellowsnapdragon – there are villages all over Africa where there’s an evangelical ‘church’ every third or fourth house and per CSM and Guardian these notMuthees are exploiting superstition for “deliverance” cash – their preferred targets are children under 10
long after South Africa’s Truth & Reconciliaton Comm., there was another panel devoted to wiping out witchcraft accusations – hundreds of people of year were being chased from their villages or much, much worse
I find Sarah Palin and her pastor terrifying. These folks are ignorant, intolerant, and incredibly dangerous to anyone who does not agree with them. We’ve seen what Palin does to anyone who dares to cross her, even close friends and relatives. She is an insta-monster, just add power. That kind of petty vindictiveness melded with religious extremism is precisely what triggered the hysteria in Salem. Oh, and Bill Donahue is a fool if he thinks that Muthee and Palin think that Catholics are any less “evil” than a witch. Once they have burned all the books and all the witches, the Catholics are next.
After 8 years with a war criminal sociopath-in-chief running our country into the ground. we really need to come up with some kind of testing to keep people with obvious mental illness out of the oval office. McCain and Palin both have shown themselves to be mentally unstable in ways that ought to make any sensible person shudder in horror at the thought of them having access to weapons of mass destruction.
McCain/Palin, the ticket for those who like their leaders batshit crazy.
Step and a half snakes.
Hey, good to see you here SD!
New mother or slumming?
A German friend of mine just shrugs. “What do you expect from a country that was founded by every kook and religious nut in Europe?”
Amazing that the targets are almost always women and children huh?
((((SouthernDragon))))
bom dia. good to see you. where ya been hiding?
LOL
So I googled it to see what I would get. The fourth or so hit was me asking you to explain it here in July!
Your friend forgets the nice business folks that settled here along with the kooks.
Can’t take credit for it. It believe it is an unsourced quote. I first heard it several years ago.
Wow, interesting. So Muthee may be a scammer who somehow latched onto the useful fools at the Wasilla Assembly of God. That inspires confidence./S

My other machine died last Monday. Got a new one yesterday and have been setting it up. Nice to be back. Way behind on what’s been going on. This 22″ widescreen monitor is niiiiice. Machine is one fast sucker.
PC I assume?
That’s too much.
I agree with you completely.
There’s only one teensy problem. The religious nutcases who have hijacked the national media discussion would insist on having their own “christian” psychologists tell us what “healthy” means. Up is down, black is white, war is peace, etc.
People on the right, whether those who seriously believe that they can make “science” mean whatever they want it to mean, or the cynical power players who manipulate those in the first group, have drained our common language of its consensus meaning.
How ironic (and evil on the part of the manipulators) that these are the same folks who supposedly hated academics for “deconstruction” theory.
glad to have you back with the new faster machine and all. We had a small kitchen fire today (no damage)but the critters and I hung outside for a while today
My ancestors resemble that comment.
Yeah, couldn’t afford a Mac, which I had said would be my next machine. Got a Gateway T5694. A f*kin’ monster. 3600MHz front bus speed. 640G hard drive. Vista 64-bit.
Per MSNBC:
McCain tells NBC’s Brian Williams: I’m hopeful I will be at debate tomorrow
Folks at work were glad I got a machine. I get grumpy if I can’t access good info. Why’d you set yer kitchen on fire?
Ian upstairs
Speed on brother, hell’s only half full!
hmm well I called myself being nice and baking a pie for the mr but he had left an old take away pizza box in the bottom oven. SO I fred up the oven thinking (of course) nothing was in there and within 5 minutes, the kitchen and dining room were full of acrid smoke (dog, weebits and I all coughing). But got the fire out (it was localized to the oven) and had to air out the house.
In small villages, people who are different are accused of being witches, even today, not because they practice witchcraft but becaue of the need to scapegoat. There is a huge cultural problem in Uganda with citizens–especially women, the elderly and children being ostracized, injured or killed out of fear of witchcraft.
The influence of evangelical Christianity has actually magnified the issue, while indeed corrupt religious practices are also on the rise. In poorer societies can become fanatical about their faith be it a colonizing religion like Christianity or a form of indigenous belief systems which have mutated.
Here in America fear of demons and witchcraft occupies a great portion of the thoughts in a Christian minority–the extremely fearful fundamentalists
sects.http://www.moodymanual.demonbuster.com/howtoid6.html

I left feedback on Donohue’s website suggesting that he documents or retracts his claim that witchcraft is a problem in Africa, resulting in many deaths. I also asked him why commentary about Palin’s religious affiliations is anti-Catholic.
But Donohue’s chapel features a chorus of chirping crickets, as I recall.
You gonna have to replace the oven? Mr won’t be leaving pizza boxes in the oven in the future, methinks. Weebits is still with you? Got any new pix?
On a happy note, the state elections supervisor says they’re getting as many as 25,000 new voter registrations a day. He’s trying to farm out some of the processing to the counties and that after hiring about 25 extra people. Can’t wait until 7 Oct, when the total figures will be out. Palin has fired up the women voters in FL and not the way she wanted.
Gotta go feed the tigers and myself. Later.
shamless self promotion,
just to bring you all down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZiLmZCbgFE
No, don’t have to replace the oven as I put it out pretty fast. I cleaned it out and fired it back up (works fine). Weebits is vacationing here until my aunt returns. I don’t have any new pics but I will take some and post them up.
Awesome news about the voter registration!! New voters for local races as well (always a struggle to get some folks to vote downticket) Make usre you let me know what the total is come Oct.
Experts on rat control? No..there are still far too many Republication still running around like rats in a maze right now. If they are as dumb as their daughter they probably fed those rats lots of Viagra.
Yes…indeed…that she is. He has said that she is a good choice. I don’t approve of anyone Cheney approves of.
…to quote
Quoting Palin…I’ll try to find you some and I’ll bring ‘em to ya…
Sorry..I just couldn’t resist!
And all of those Nazis brought here by the US gov’t. after ww2. didn’t help any either.
Maybe Sarah Palin will convince Johnny Boy to replace Center for Disease Control Director, Julie Louise Gerberding with Pastor Muthee. After all, has Gerberding ever driven witches out of a region? NOOOOOOO!
Gerberding believes disease is caused by imaginary microscopic things called bacteria and viruses. Has anyone actually seen with their own two eyes such things! Lots of people have seen witches! And ghosts! And Satan! And aliens! And Bigfoot! And cupacabras! Who do you really believe!
Regarding witchcraft deaths in Africa: the majority victims have been ACCUSED of witchcraft and are killed because of that.
http://afp.google.com/article/…..lwRb_yJBHg
….several people suspected by villagers of practising sorcery are killed each year.
“It’s quite frequent for someone to be killed here or there over witchcraft accusations in Ruyigi province but it used to be very secret. This is the first time it has happened in broad daylight,” Bucumi said.
http://www.newtondailynews.com…..local1.txt
The local tribal people believe in witchcraft, and red eyes are a sign that someone is practicing witchcraft. Unfortunately, for many of the elderly women of the area, who tend to the fires, their use of dung for burning because of the scarcity of firewood, turns their eyes red, and they are at risk of being killed.
