1) They need to establish a baseline. When they ask people their opinions about “blacks” they need to establish what the same group would say about members of their own race…or Americans in general. For example, many respondants who are white may also say that most other Americans are lazy, greedy, ignorant about the world, etc. Their attitude about blacks may not differ from what they feel about whites.

2) Even if people have prejudice, it doesn’t mean that they hold that ALL members of a racial group have a characteristic the AVERAGE exhibits. While it might mean that certain people are clearly predisposed to vote against an “unknown” individual because of race…they may not do so IF the get to know a person, or their White opponent. Knowledge may trump prejudice…call it the “Huck Finn Effect”. This allows placing some blacks in a “special category” based upon achievement, oe simply by experiencing them. Still the prejudice would remain for the great “unknown” mass of that population.
