EPU-land from downstairs. Here’s one of several things on my mind. A paranoid nightmare.

I started asking “Why would the Congress ever agree with a plan that 75% of the public quite clearly opposes…a month before the election”. For incumbents running for re-election it’s practically suicidal…at least 20% of their results.

McCain suspends his campaign…even shutting down his commercials. By all intents “political suicide”.

John Yoo suddenly returns to the WH…even though there is clearly no “national security” issue he has to deal with. Why bring in an “expert” manipulator of Constitutional interpretation? The man who believes the Executive can take up any power during a “State of Emergency”?

Bush invites both McCain and Obama…neither of them actually in the Senate leadership to participate with the latter to reach a “deal” with him. McCain himself admits he doesn’t have much of a clue of how to resolve the issue. Of course, in normal Constitutional course all these folks can do is bring a possible bill before Congress to vote upon. Yet, as noted above, it’s political suicide for most Republicans and Democrats.

So lets say that McCain plays the White Knight. He presents a “compromise proposal” with lower tranche and some superficial Congressional oversights, and a few other bogus soupbones and evasions. Bush “grudgingly” agrees with this, and so do the Republicans present. Bush hints at the alternative. The deal is struck.

McCain, and the Repugs in the Congress, emerge as the great heroes…saving the economy while reducing the tax burden to a few hundred billion…and staving off a “Declaration of National Emergency”. His polling numbers shoot upward as fast as the stock Markets, and the MSM proclaim this wondrous “McCain Recovery Plan”. Obama is left grousing.

McCain wins the election. Then he (or Bush) returns to Congress and says “It’s not enough, and we can either declare a national state of emergency or you can pass another $500 billion bailout.”

that’s some fine tinfoil you are wearing. i’ve been trying to connect similar dots… wondering if the october surprise was sprung early or if this is the bright shiny thong of distraction/excuse

Hello everyone. I’ve been super busy, so haven’t had as much time to read, but I try to check in to FDL each day to keep up with all the news.

Hey Suzanne–I like your idea of a winter garden, and if you live in the Pacific Northwest, Territorial Seed is a great resource. I’m doing some winter salad greens right now. Look for the spot where you have the most sun, and put in some winter salad greens there asap. Arugula is good, and Italian dandelions, and mache or corn salad. Red and green mustard greens work well too. If you keep it covered with plastic, you’ll have greens probably all winter long. I use slender PVC pipes that are sold at hardware stores, and stick then in the ground over the garden beds so they make hoops, then cover them with clear plastic and hold the ends down with rocks or bricks. It’s a little late, but if you get the seeds in the ground asap and keep it covered to raise the temperature a bit you should do fine. Here is a really good book for a resource for inexpensive vegetable gardening ideas that work well: Gardening When It Counts by Steve Solomon. It’s the best book I’ve read so far about how to start seeds, how to prepare garden beds, all focused on vegetable gardening. Very good book. Good luck on your new garden!

Maybe I’m gunna regret sayin’ this but I think the fascists have been exposed on this and Crazy John has been hung out ta dry in the last 48 hours, his campaign can’t be saved.

When you step back and put a considering eye on it, the all-out disarray in both the Bush adminstration and the McCain campaign the last couple of days has been quite something. They seem even to have stunned most of the markets into quiescence for the moment. Kind of funny when you think about it.

They have often reminded me lately of the Ugarte model of crisis management, from Casablanca (about 1 min).

Gas situation in NC has been a major pain. Driving from eastern end to western end earlier in week, encountered shortages which got progressively worse going westward. Hopefully municipalities are getting stations to hold back for emergency vehicles; have no idea how truckers are managing to move product. Long lines and short tempers at the few stations that get periodic partial shipments………..it’s gonna be *real* fun when water becomes in equally short supply. :-(

I think a lot of us are wondering the same thing. But, luckily, John has a $5,000 makeup artist so that should get us through the election. After they steal the election, Palin can announce Cheney as her VP and we’re good to go.

McCain’s had some very bad days lately but today was a doozy. I hope he keeps on blowing up his campaign every day to Nov 4, his approval ratings tank into the no comeback zone until only the 20 percenters will be left to vote for him.
I’m always looking for a ray of hope. It’s just too horrifying to imagine him in office.

An update on my friend’s issue that we went to Adult Protective agency for today. The agency is opening a case to investigate abuse of him and as a Kicker that Black Widow will be having a case against her opened once we get the ball rolling for my friend. So in a nut shell we made good progress to protect my friend from being put out of his home of the last 24 years. I fell very good to know something
IS going to be done to help him !!

The MSM is missing the point as usual bad home loans are not killing the banks. Nope the banks sold those bad loans to hedgefunds by giving the Hedgefunds loans at 20 to 1 or more on assets owned.
The Hedgefunds have to pay back these loans to the banks but if more people stop paying the loans than the banks and hedgefunds estimated would stop paying in their loan approval/business plans then the hedgefunds cannot make their payments to the banks.
So then other people see that home loans suck as an investment so they stop buying the homeloans. The Hedgefunds we assume (because we have no trust worthy numbers from those guys) can’t pay the banks either.
So rather than have us bail out the banks why don’t we let the Hedgefunds go under?
Banks have no problem taking people’s houses why don’t they want to force the Hedgefunds to sell their assets first and then if the banks still need more cash we can bail them out.
But only after they have already exhausted all other possible streams of revenue beforehand.
I would much rather have the Hedgefunds have a firesale on stocks than the American tax payers pay full price for bank assets that we know are not going to be sold at face value.
