Last Saturday, Howie began a Senate contest between our five great Blue America Senate candidates. Howie updated on our Senate contest yesterday:
This week we started a week-long contest to pick a Senate candidate to give the same $5,000 check too. A donation of $1-- or $1,000-- counts as a vote and you can vote here. Since we started on Saturday afternoon, there have been over 300 votes and more than $9,000. Right now Jeff Merkley (D-OR) is ahead although both Andrew Rice (D-OK) and Rick Noriega (D-TX) are starting to catch up.
Howie sent me a statement earlier that Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse gave in support of Tom Allen, and I wanted to share it with all of you, because it applies to every better representative we can get into office to do a better job for all of us:
This is what Sen. Whitehouse sent Blue America (obviously Whitehouse won his seat by defeating another Republican moderate-- albeit a REAL one-- because RI voters understood the importance of a Democratic majority in the Senate):
"We absolutely need my friend Tom Allen in the U.S. Senate. In the House, Tom was a wise and early critic of the war in Iraq, and since then has been working for a responsible deadline for withdrawal. He was also one of the first members of Congress to address the high costs of prescription drugs for seniors. Now, Tom has put forward detailed plans to solve the health care crisis, strengthen our economy, expand opportunities for working families, and end our crippling addiction to foreign oil.
"Next year, more than ever, we will need a strong Democratic majority in the Senate to put our country back on track. Susan Collins will stand with Republican leaders to obstruct our country's progress. Tom Allen will stand with President Barack Obama to fight for the change America needs."
So, take some time today to cast your vote in the Blue America Senate contest. If we want better leadership, we have to work for it, and this is as good a place to start as any. As Howie says, a donation of $1-- or $1,000-- counts as a vote and you can vote here.

I’m hoping for a complete McInsane implosion. Double digit leads in the Prez race, especially in “swing” states will free up some resources for down ticket races. Just a half of 1% shift of Obama fundraising into Blue America candidates would make a big difference.
Gotta get that veto-proof majority in the Senate as well.
OT: David Letterman supposedly just taped for the night and was pissed McInsane canceled. Dave mocked him and then had Olbermann on as St. John’s replacement. Brilliant!
there is a lengthy excerpt over at CandL. it’s funny. david really lets it rip.
Howie!!!!
Bonkers:
Seriously? KO is on Letterman tonight? Awesome!! Letterman sure is letting his flag fly politically.
from commenter Robert D at c and l:
love it!!
whole post on it now at c and l.
chuck todd trying to say people will look at Mccain through a partisan lens and say it’s chickenshit or it’s good leadership. well duh.
If McLame really knew what he was doing, he would have hustled over to DC asafp before today!!! jeez. just trying to ride out the media cycle from the rick davis crap and stall for time while Frank and Dodd impale themselves.
Digg it!
I guess since McPalin is on the Foreign Relations Committe, his leadership is needed to protect USB.
Totally OT Christy, but I had to pass this on.
Congrats to Jane, you, Marcy, Tbogg, Siun, Attackerman, Laura, Lindsey, David, Blue Texan, and all of the other grand folks who make Firedoglake a pleasure to behold!
Obtw, I think Evan seriously under-rates the ranking of FDL. You folks are Top Ten at least, and Top 3 in my book.
Top ONE in mine!
Are there only 11 right-wing blogs? Or is something wrong with my formatting that I could only see 11?
First the bad news. I am facing a financial crisis. However I found a way to borrow $700 billion in your name which should cover some of it. I can’t give you the details but I can say that your loan is safe and I will pay you back eventually in coconuts. I can also dismiss as ridiculous rumors that I will be retiring to an island in the South Pacific. That’s all for now. I need to go out and buy a case of suntan lotion.
11 readable ones perhaps. The others may be too extreme for general consumption.
ouch!
watch for me selling my new mortgage backed securities on the Home Shopping Network!
Wait a minute. Wonkette is number six? Huh? What is the basis of the ratings? clicks? FDL IS number one; best coverage overall, best legal coverage and analysis, most evenhanded political coverage, best snark…
I think Paulson and Bernanke got themselves on that ol’ Nigerian letter distribution list and they are peeing their pants to hurry-up and be the first ones to respond with their bank account and credit card numbers.
Hilarious. Caught on tape lying to David Letterman…
Oh wow — how cool is that! Thanks!
I’m setting my alarm so i can watch this.
You know, I live in southern Maine, so I am smack dab in the middle of the Allen/Collins thing, and I have to say that Tom Allen is running an awful campaign. Susan Collins is curing diabetes, providing portable defibrulators, reaching across the aisle, and apparently wearing tights and a cape with a big “C” on the chest. Tom has an ad showing him shoveling snow and running track in high school. I saw his campaign manager on a local talk show (our NBC affiliate is pretty liberal)and she was asked point blank about it. In NH, our next door neighbor who shares this channel, Jean Shaheen has welded George Bush right to John Sununu’s ass. Her TV ads are brutal. She’s ahead by about 900%. So why wasn’t she doing that with Tom Allen? Oh, they feel that people need to ‘get to know him.’ Sigh. It breaks my heart - he is a good man and I would dearly love to see him upset Collins (dear God, even just so I never have to hear her speak again), but I have almost no hopes… Why do Dem campaigns do this?
Sorry to go OT so soon but speaking of polls, PBS has one up asking if Palin is qualified to be VP and right now it is running 50 percent yes, 49 percent no.
Care to freep the hell out of a ridiculous poll?
I did.
oops
lost at the bottom of a thread again

I feel your pain. Myself and few others talked to Tom Allen about this when he came to Oxford County to host a supper (it was Standing Room Only because myself and others phone-banked for a two weeks to make sure people showed up). We told him point blank that he needs to get fired up against her, but I could tell he doesn’t want to. There are lots of Dems out there that don’t like that kind of politics. Me? I live for it.
Punkster, there has been a rumor about Susan Collins for years now and when I did a post about it on my blog, within 12 hours the two Susan Collins Google Alerts in my inbox had this post in it, but each one link went to a failed-page alert and then the other went to a screen with a naked lady on the top of it AND IT WAS LOADED WITH A TROJAN. Within a few days, my computer was infected with the Trojan (and so were others who clicked on it) and a week after that my hard drive was completely corrupted.
Now why the hell would someone do that to the only two links in the 2 years I’ve been receiving Susan Collins Google Alerts? Who would care about this INFORMATION NOT GETTING OUT TO THE PUBLIC? Oh that’s right! Sen. Susan Collins and HER MAFIA HERE IN MAINE!
The subject of the post I did, you ask? Here it is:
Sen. Susan Collins had an affair with a Tennessee GOP operative who was married and whose wife had Alzheimer’s. It’s either is true or the Maine GOP back in the 1990’s put this out there to keep Mainers from questioning her sexuality. Anyways, COLLINS HAD THE AUDACITY TO GO ON WJBQ RECENTLY TO LAMBASTE SEN. JOHN EDWARDS ABOUT HIS AFFAIR WHEN HIS WIFE WAS SICK WITH CANCER! If you remember this interview, she acted like a giddy giggly 9 year old and embarrassed everyone! Me? It pissed me off.
Anyways, tell your friends this lovely little story. Sen. Susan Collins’ office is okay in corrupting the hard drives of their constituents if they report the truth!
That linky didn’t work, but I believe this one does: PBS Sarah MsBull…winkle poll.
Yup, heard the interview - all over even FM radio, as you know. Thanks. I can only throw up in my mouth so many times. Affair, huh? How in the name of God could some man… oh, Gawd, never mind. I’m sorry, her voice makes my ears bleed.
So, if he didn’t want to (as they say down south where my pappy was from, to my eternal horror) root, hog or die, why in the name of all that is holy did he decide to run for the Senate against that enabling, pedantic wretch? He could have been Rep for life and wouldn’t have broken a sweat!
She needs Iraq’s financial, um, irregularities mentioned every 5 minutes or so.
Suzie-Q’s CD#2 office (Main St., Bangor) is closed/pitch dark each day when I pass on my way home from work (including Sat.).
Very telling, in many respects…day of the week is irrelevant.
Zilch “grassroots” and volunteers screams volumes to me.
Pls. don’t underestimate Tom.
Maine people are worried sick about $$$ & heating bills, etc.
He’ll cream her in the upcoming debates.
She’s got nuthin’.
Cast those absentee ballots early, already.
