What does a belief in evolution have to do with the economy? Quite a bit, as you're about to hear. In an economic crisis like this, on the eve of a general election we have choices to make. Will we make the sort that invest in the kinds of science that will retool our economy for the twenty first century -- or will we let what some call a holy war on science take us the other way?
With John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate, the question of religious fundamentalism and its impact is up -- Environmentalist Chip Ward wrote recently that a Palin presidency would be, "the equivalent of launching a 'surge strategy' in the Republlican war on the environment." What are the implications for our planet -- and our economy?
Today on GRITtv [live at noon EDT, 9 am FDL] we discuss the true cost of the Right's war on science and the environment with JEFF SHARLET, HEATHER ROGERS, ESTHER KAPLAN, and DIANA DEGETTE.

laura, imo, you and not helping matters when you use the phrase “believe in science.” i have no idea actually what you mean by that, but it sounds like you are saying that people have to choose who to believe: the priests of religion or the “priests” of science. imo both choices are profoundly anti-thought, anti-science and are appeals to authority. i think of science as a way to try to understand / make sense of the natural world. it’s a method, it’s not the conventional wisdom of scientists. and sadly, what we are missing is that the method is not being taught - so people end up thinking that science is what scientists say, instead of what they do.
again, jmo, but what we need is not more people to “believe” in evolution - we need to learn how to think and judge for ourselves. i am confident that when we do that, the overwhelming evidence in favor of evolution will be apparent.
Their “war on the environment” is also part of the belief that they are all about to be imminently raptured, and thus environmental concerns are of little to no consequence.
The Flying Spaghetti Monster has few tenets other than take care of this ball of dust, and love your fellow man, pastafarian or not.
It seems the precepts of fundamentalist evangelism are a wee bit more complicated than that.
I should bring back my “Executive Branch Davidian” signs. These are from yesterday in the Bay Area:

Anyone see any of them?
Ding ding ding. *g*
I’m on the other coast. No one who does good work like you back here.
The anti-science / anti-intellectualism of the Bush-McCain years and crowd should be a strong focus of the Obama campaign. That the country has been forced to a standstill on issues such as global warming and stem-cell research by these knuckle-dragging know-nothings is a stain on America. Obama will change that. The American people are receptive to progress.
Interesting that the FW Blogger is promoting himself on FDL…too bad, but interesting…
thank you for your work. here in MA people have gotten arrested for putting out such signs. :(
I believe the rules are you can link to your own blog once/day.
FreewayBlogger is an honored friend of FDL. A bunch of us know FreewayBlogger personally, have met FreewayBlogger at blog-related social events, and admire FreewayBlogger’s mission.
Further, FreewayBlogger has never, ever solicited funds from anyone I have ever met, has declined offers of support from myself and others (I have witnessed this), and FreewayBlogger’s website doesn’t even contain a link to ‘contribute’ for maintenance of the blog or support of the mission.
And Good Morning Miss Laura.
thank you newt. well said, and i agree completely!
