Yesterday I saw Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, interviewed by Brian Williams. He seemed quite anxious to tell us how pleasant his meeting with Sarah Palin will go. But when pressed slightly on what the hell happened last month with Russia he really showed how to stick to a simple, if dubious, script.
There is probably good reason:
The details that Western intelligence agencies extracted from their signal intelligence agree with NATO’s assessments… [T]he Georgians amassed roughly 12,000 troops on the border with South Ossetia on the morning of Aug. 7. Seventy-five tanks and armored personnel carriers — a third of the Georgian military’s arsenal — were assembled near Gori. Saakashvili’s plan, apparently, was to advance to the Roki Tunnel in a 15-hour blitzkrieg and close the eye of the needle between the northern and southern Caucasus regions, effectively cutting off South Ossetia from Russia.
At 10:35 p.m. on Aug. 7, less than an hour before Russian tanks entered the Roki Tunnel, according to Saakashvili, Georgian forces began their artillery assault on Tskhinvali.
Of course, Palin already knows what the truth is, by Bering Straight osmosis.

Aloha, Attaturk!
Bernhard at Moon of Alabama got it right from the get go…
Morning Attaturk.
Is that a pic of Saakashvili and what’s that flag pin on his lapel?
The Georgian flag, Sunny!
Here’s a pic…
Since we’re ostensibly all Georgians, anyone who doesn’t like grits can pass them down to my end of the table…
Morning Early Birds! ;-)
Thx, so I guess wearing flag pins is the new international craze. His isn’t as big as the one Palin was wearing.
NPR just said France is sending *armed* peacekeepers to Georgia. Contrary to UN rec that peace keepers there should be unarmed.
NPR also going on about FBI investigation into principals of FNMA, AIG etc.
Who wants to bet once this super urgent bill passes we never hear another word about that?
Aspect Consulting in Brussels is a rank amateur in the war PR business. Where were the Georgian preemies being hurled from their incubators by greedy Russians? And this cost Georgia half a million euros? Mikhail should’ve hired a real PR firm like Hill and Knowlton.
Heh, according to WSJ it’s just Frannie, as they say across the pond, Lehman, and AIG.
Notice anything? I mean it’s true that corporate failures tend to open up the books to bankruptcy courts, conservators, etc., who then might find the stuff of criminal referrals —it’s how Keating, Enron, etc were finally brought down. But this does seem awfully quick, and awfully restricted considering what the industry as a whole is publically suspected of.
Apparently Atlanta has had no gas in the last few days so I am really surprised that sexy sarah, the angel of anwar, has not blasted the ruskies for cutting off the oil. And on top of that what the hell was she doing, surely she could have seen the soviets about to attack from her bedroom window. Messin’ with her boy toy no doubt.
It’s not really “no gas”. It’s morons panicking.
Good morning, pups. It’s Dowd and Friedman today. Ms. Dowd gives us “Park Avenue Diplomacy,” and says Gov. Sarah Palin and Henry Kissinger made an odd couple on Tuesday: the last impure Rockefeller Republican and the first pure Rovian Republican. The Great Moustache of Wisdom writes, as The Current Occupant, to our “Dear Iraqi Friends.” He says as Americans lose their homes and sink into debt, they no longer understand why we are spending $1 billion a day to make Iraqis feel more secure in their homes.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got some lemon poppyseed muffins that just came out of the oven. And Raven’s right about the morons. We’ve got a bunch of them here in Savannah too, topping off their gas tanks when they’re 3/4 full. “Just in case…”
Following visits from Rovesputin and other attached to McSame. Was this the “war” that would distract us from the financial meltdown?
Good Morning, Wasn’t Bear Sterns the first to go? Why aren’t they on the list?
Are the petrol stations upping the price as well?
How was your trip to Atlanta? I still have gas but the local news said that it will take another week or so to fix the problems.
Anybody find that story about the House caving on off-shore drilling late last night? NPR read it on the summary, but it’s not up in writing yet, and they have been known to bury items that way, so they can claim “well we did read it” I guess.
The measure was part of some other bill. David Obey was cited. These guys are getting much too obviously deliberate at this veiling shit.
Morning one and all,
Guess the mcShame lobbyists have been busy setting up meetings for Palin with their respective benefactors
They do not give a sweet diddly as long as they can line their pockets. They can say they fought for no off shore drilling and then they let the ban expire no doubt citing other “greater” battles to be fought. Just what the greater battles are we have to ask fancy nancy from san francisco. Bastards
As a result of this are the states going to be able to prohibit it off of their respective coasts
The prices went up radically just before Ike hit, and have slowly started to creep down a few cents. They’re still considerably higher than they were last month, however. There are murmurings about investigating price gouging, but nothing ever comes of that.
I was never a Georgian. That remark was, in my view, one of McSames most nonsensical statements of the campaign. I think the fact is that most Americans (including one vice-presidential candidate) cannot find Georgia on a map. (Most Americans probably cannot find the Georgia where Jimmy Cater comes from on a map.) I also think most people couldn’t give a damn about Georgia and even the ignernt know damn well that we just don’t have the ability – not even “perhaps” – to help out our good NATO buddy what with our military having been stretched so thin.
When I moved South a few years ago, I had grits for teh first time. I am not impressed. Here, you (y’all?) can have mine.
[Friedman] says as Americans lose their homes and sink into debt, they no longer understand why we are spending $1 billion a day to make Iraqis feel more secure in their homes.
I understand. Because Bush is an asshole. Our Congress is a bunch of wussies. And about 1/2 the American people are stoopid enough to want more.
Are you sure you didn’t have the abomination of instant grits? Find a 3rd generation grits cooker to make you some proper grits and you might just change your mind! (Mr. Marion in Savannah growls that “grits ain’t groceries,” but he’s just cranky sometimes.)
Are the petrol stations upping the price as well?
Mornin’ nomo. Patriotic ‘mericans who put country first say “gas” (not “petrol”)and “too” (not as “well”). But the uptock in prices was being explained as being a result fo hurricanes. I suppopse it’ll only get worse.
And morons vote red when poked with the fear stick.
Hmmm
Targeted incompetence?
In NH the price difference for the same grade in Portsmouth (theoretically a “rich” town) and 40 miles away in Concord (the state capital) is about 20 cents yesterday. We in Portsmouth are paying an extra 7% because we live on the coast!
That’s a drive-by…off to work and I’ve jogged the mile to the train twice already this week.
Hoping to do it without breaking a sweat this AM
She began to wail “Jealousy screams”
Forget where I had ‘em. I know it wasn’t Waffle House because although I didn’t especially like them, I didn’t get diarrhea.
1,775 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Attaturk and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
This time a the mornin’ when all things political have been runnin’ ta stock market crashes, and Georgian attrocities against their own people and Sarah Palin’s latest criminal exposure I wanna scream at the top a my lungs “WAKE UP PEOPLE, THEY”RE STILL DYIN’ IN IRAQ!!”
This is the scorched earth strategy of the fascists as they burn everythin behind ‘em and try and throw out so much shit that we folks run outta toilet paper. Get outta Iraq and the rest of the mess is easy ta clean up.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, FEAR IS JEST A WORD, GOD DAMMIT!!
Today show has DeMint and Schumer. DeMint wants to get rid of the capital gains tax. Yup, that would help those with their savings in an IRA. I do agree with DeMint that we should not pass this plan. Schumer supports getting the plan passed this week.
Saw Schumer on with Kyl on Chris Wallace Sunday. he said then we shouldn’t “Chridstmas tree” the Paulson plan but should do other stuff separately. Bad idea in my view.
I tend to revert to old english when my fingers, or mouth, moves faster than my brain, a occurrence that is happening all too frequently these days as I slink toward senility.
NH is close no? Media says they love McCain there.
Not senility at all. I was just bustin’ ya. We have a LooHoo here. A loo is a terlit isn’t it.
And Afghanistan and Pakistan and who knows where else in the bushy wars for oil and glory
Good Morning Attaturk and Firedogs,
this kinda got lost in the Bailout!, Bailout!, Bailout! Shuffle Sunday:
Colin Powell says Georgia provoked Russia Crisis, Hints McCain Response was hasty, reckless
he rightfully has zero credibility with us, but C & L points out he still carries influence with the Foreign Affairs crowd – my friends this is a serious bitch slap
Adn I much prefer English to what I hear sometimes in the South. No offense, Marion and Jim White and others. There. I think I’ve insulted enough people before 7:30 for one day.
If it was in a “restaurant” (other than either long-time family owned or extremely high end) you got something resembling sand in library paste, not good grits. I sympathize.
Off to labor in the salt mines.
Have any of the foreign leaders been quoted in a foreign paper yet saying they thought Palin was a clueless idiot? I assume most are more discrete but sometimes these epeople get honest with the press at home.
Yeah. It was. An they were. It’s not so much that I disliked them as much as that they were very, very, very, very bland.
NH is ostensibly gooper but with a serious independent streak and one thing they do not like is getting fucked. They abandoned the bushies, both of them, and look to do the same with McSame IMHO. Ron Paul, Barr, Nadir and a host of others could drag the vote away from Palin/McSame. Palin, according to my spouse, is not going to get a heck of a lot of support around here as she is way too “out there”. The vast majority of women in NH vote pro-choice, including repubs surprisingly. There is a damn good grass roots campaign for obama leaning on the support for Carol Shea Porter and the candidacy of Jeanne Shaheen so it is not written in stone that Palin/McSame will win here.
I think this comes under the heading of “Write Your Own Joke” (story in NYT):
“12 Athletes Leaving Brains to Concussion Study”
Good news. I’m not sure why but despite her big crowd at Old Folks City near O-town on Sunday, Palin is not as popular in FL as other places. Don’t know why. Maybe an aversion to cold places and she personifies one.
I saw that too. It is my hope that after the foreign policy debate Powell comes out behind Obama. Just because he is considered by many on the right to have so much expertise. That is the bitch slap i am hoping for.
This article is interesting from Aljezeera
Speaking of FL. here we go again?????
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26856896/
The ballots are screwey ’round where I live and this is exepcted to be part of the “swingiest” area of a “swing state.” Could be a problem.
You mean like Maliki telling the press that the US wanted the status of forces agreement extended a year for political reasons here in the US.
Speaking of foreign press about palin, here’s one I’ve linked to a few times in the past few days. This is the last time. Promise.
http://english.pravda.ru/opini…..lindevil-0
exactly. or telling the press about the time of his meeting with Obama that he thought the timetable Obama propses was a good idea.
Attaturk -
that pic looks like the bumbling nemesis in any Pink Panther film
was interesting.
I wish she’d explain why Alaskans get rebate checks from their state government but can take such a disproortionate amount of federal assistance. why are the people in the lower 48 (and Hawaii)subsidizing Alaska’s rebates?
hey guys, i forgot when the deabte was scheduled for when i signed up for a camping trip. what station should I Tivo? I’d like to hear some of the post-debate analysis and think FOX will be interesting. Better ideas? msnbc? nbc? Forget the analysis and do c-span?
Georgian pres on MSNBC right now.
What is interesting is that here in CO the rethugs are saying how Failin took on the corp interests by raising royalties paid by oil and gas cos but Dems here in CO are going to drive away business by doing the same thing. If they had a half a brain they would realize how conflicted they are but alas.
“Bailout here! Bailout now!”
Same fear, different shit.
It is now appearing this is a set up by the Bush Regime and they want the Democrats to give these companies FREE MONEY knowing the market will fix itself.
Amen to that, NorskeFT! Last night on Rachel Maddow I think it was, there was reported to be some written evidence via Iraqi govt that BushCo postponed the pullout due to political reasons in USA. I have been trying to follow up on it, but unsuccessful so far.
Here’s the conversation I posted this morning between Saint Sarah and Hamid Karzai:
“Hi Hammy. I love your outfit. Beautiful colors!”
“Why thank you Sarah”
“Where did you get it?”
“Afghanistan”
“Afghanistan? Is that like Abercrombie & Fitch?”
“No Sarah. Afghanistan is a country.”
“Oh. Hey wait a minute! My country is Alaska and it starts with an “A” too!”
Hammy sighs & slaps his forehead.
Maliki Suggests Bush Pushed To Extend U.S. Presence In Iraq To Help McCain
I can’t wait for the end of this “culture of fear” we’ve all been living under!
Oooh thank you!
OT-Back to the bailout. Remember awhile ago there was a post here where we discussed what we considered Bush’s failures, but looking at it from his perspective were actually successes? One example was Katrina and the FEMA failure turning LA red? Well, is this financial disaster another disaster for USA but a success for Bush and cronies? I can’t get out of my head someone’s comment that Bush is deliberately trying to bankrupt the US, create a permanent under-class and deny the country any funds for things like Universal Healthcare. I’m losing sleep over it.
here ya go
Crooks and Liars
Would you give us an update. I had read that his popularity is waning at home.
My trip was no problem. I commuted to Tech for a couple of years so I have it down pat.
I wish it would “wain” here :)
Me neither! Someone here linked last night to a post Digby did about this being a farce for the assholes to steal more of our money and my light bulb went off! Of course that’s what they’re doing and they’re using the same fear techniques that have always won them what they wanted.
I hate them. Yes, I know, ‘hate’ is a strong word but it’s the only word I can find in my limited vocabulary that fits! ;-)
McCain must have thought that Alaska was so far away ,that nobody would know what goes on there!
Thats what happens when you don’t know how to use the internet!
It won’t end with the election. The rethugs will still be jumping up and down in unison telling us to be afraid and the fundies will still be preaching their hate.
It is Friday night at 9 PM Eastern/6 PM Pacific and is supposed to be 90 mins (but I’m figuring longer). Here’s a link to the whole schedule.
Up to you what channel to TiVo. Fox Noise is way too Neanderthal for me to stomach (think diarrhea grits). I was visiting my parents in Texas during Hurricane Ike and they pretty much have FN running 24/7 and I finally just had to burst out laughing at how fucking inane they are. Even my diehard Repug parents had to admit that “they treat us like we were stupid because they are stupid”—but not a good enuf reason to change the channel, apparently.
I don’t think the bailout is ever off topic. interesting thought. One could say that the Repubs have been creating and maintaining an underclass through neglect and indifference and policies prerential to the wealthy all these years. But what’s going on now is extreme.
If the Democrats go along with George Bush before the November election by bailing out Wall Street, then Barack will lose thanks to these assholes.
The FBI is investigating 26 companies right now. I think the Democrats could use this as an excuse to NOT DO A DAMN THING RIGHT NOW, by saying, “This is under investigation. We cannot make comment on it nor can we act until we find out from the FBI what happened”, you know, throw back the same words the Bush Regime has always used!
Same here on the worry. Considering that they rolled out another one of their bamboozlement squeeze plays on the Congress using the same template as many before (AUMF, Patriot Act, whatever that horrible act was that rescinded habeas corpus, FISA amendment, etc), I keep thinking they aren’t done yet.
And thank you, too!!
And wasn’t it strange to see Larry King interviewing the Iranian president last night? I flashed back to the time Saddam Hussein was interviewed by Dan Rather and wondered if this was ‘deja vu all over again’!
Iran next to lose a president to hanging after a red herring attack here in America?
I agree Kayln, is this just another over-the-top fear tactic? The whole thing stinks (releasing their power-grabbing bill on a Friday and wanting it passed before Monday A.M.) This bailout is so unpopular that it’ll kill Obama. And we know they lie. I just don’t know if this time they’re telling the truth.
I feel the same way ,what’s the fear of the day today?
fundies=christian taliban
I”m so sorry. I’m obsessed on the bailout and didn’t really pay attention. What I did hear was the scripted b.s. “Russia’s been trying to end my govt., We want to be in NATO, even small democracies are worth saving”…..but it didn’t have my full attention.
Cross or crescent an extremist is an extremist and should be feared
Here’s my fear of the day. Over at DKos:
Barack Obama needs to think more clearly on this. He is saying he will not sign any bill that doesn’t include protections for the American people and lots of oversight & regulations of Wall Street. That’s good, but I don’t think a PENNY should go to the assholes! Let’s hope NOTHING is done about this until next January. Let the companies fail on Wall Street that need to fail and if the uber wealthy of our country HAVE TO LIVE LIKE US UNTIL JANUARY then…………OH WELL! Suck it up assholes! Live like a commoner for awhile, because it might change your tune!
Early morning swim is up.
John McCain couldn’t answer the following question:
“If you were the deciding vote to give George Bush what he wants, would you vote in favor of it?” (paraphrasing but pretty close)
Deer-in-the-headlights-reaction.
McCain has no idea what is happening. All he knows is he pulled the pretty lady out from behind the curtain and was hoping to ride her leg until election day!
What an asshole he is. He flunked my test on being a good person. He’s not even close.
going upstairs
honor my ass!!!
Did the same guy that wrote the”Niger Yellow Cake” rumor use the same script to write the “Credit Freezes Up “story ? When this rumor proves to be a fairy tail too, it’s to late. Not with my money you don’t.
Thank you, Sir! I first tasted them as a girl in the south… of California, that is.
Off topic (sort of) but PBS’s Now has a poll on whether you think Dear Sarah is qualified to be VP and the results thus far are not what they should be … go.
thanks marion.
i see the great moustache is still a moron. and a moral midget.
