Well the first debate between the two major party candidates is this Friday, with the "well-timed" subject of foreign policy. The
Wall Street Journal gives us keen insight into how John McCain will prepare for the rumble until the stumble.
McCain "will spar this week in mock debates" with former Maryland lieutenant governor Michael Steele who will play Obama "and use many of his speaking patterns, tactics and body language."
Michael Steele? What are the odds? Were J.C. Watts and Ron Christie otherwise occupied?
But McCain has a secret preparation method:
On the day of the debate, McCain "will host a town-hall event and take a short nap"
He will be up past his normal bedtime after all.

Aloha, Attaturk!
Ron Christie is so obnoxious!
Nate Silver has an excellent discussion on the Debate…
Nate’s commentary is really excellent. I enjoy reading his stuff.
Heh, by the time we GET to the domestic policy debate, we might be defunct as a democratic republic, and under martial law.
Cui bono? *G*
Yer a hoss CT . . . always a pleasure to read you, Gordon, and Burnsie here and there . . *G*
Hell, yer the only one UP when I post late from West Coast . . . /snark . . . *G*
I certainly like reading his polls of late…! ;-)
I had remarked at the Beach House that Beckett lost today! 8-(
Well, I shall bid ya’ll another fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!!
Hey CT. Didn’t want you to think you were all alone.
Morning Attaurk, thanks for the post.
It is my most fervent wish that Obama uses the foreign policy/ national security debate to hammer home the point that our economy is our strength and only hope of having a secure future.
Gutting domestic spending on education and research have compromised our ability to maintain a technological advantage and that weakens national security.
Showing up in China and Russia and Japan every day, hat in hand, to borrow money to buy bullets is not a sustainable, productive foreign policy.
These are not difficult concepts to follow but I think they could make McShitforbrain’s head explode.
They definitely took a turn for the better last week.
Fleeting messages heard deep in the night:
…
This possibility to be forestalled by having the debate be about foreign policy.
Sometimes I just don’t know …
Here’s how to make that transition. Per CNN:
The conservatives are in league with bin Laden’s attempt to bankrupt the U.S.
One of my friends asked this evening, “What do you think would happen if the Republicans steal this election in a very obvious way?”
I replied that I don’t know. But now I do: http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…../77/587767
Good Morning! We need to continue calling our representatives so they do not cave. McCain has put himself in a position to come out against the bailout, if need be, to win votes. Although the financial community is ailing, there is not need for a fast fix.
I don’t get all this freaking out about the 3rd ID and their potential “domestic” use. The 101st was there when they integrated the University of Mississippi. I bet we can find plenty of posts here complaining that they should have sent regular Army troops to help at Katrina. Take a deep breath.
FWIW Large fluctuations in dollar in the last fortnight.
Dollar had dropped vis-a-vie the Euro to $1.40 from $1.60 (numbers are approximated and time of $1.60 concurrent with $140./bbl oil) and was stabilizing about $1.42 until last few days it shot back up to $1.48. A recent check has $1.46 (concurrent with price spike in oil).

Raven, Gas stations around here are running low on gas. There were large lines at the stations that had gas. How’s Athen’s faring?
Funny you should axe! I just came from filling up because I have to drive into the ATL this morning. Two stations I passed were out and the one I found was limiting to ten gallons. I wanted to see if they had the pumps set to stop at ten but I could only take 9.3!
Excuse my ignorance, why are they low on gas?
It’s like tryin to reason
with Hurricane season.
They panic here pretty easily and that’s the deal. Lot’s of opinions in the Atlanta paper.
Yesterday, I was going to fill my gas container so that I could come home and fill the mower. Two of the three stations were closed and the other had long lines. Well, needless to say the mowing did not get done.
Why didn’t I think of that!
Atlanta is serviced through the major pipeline coming out of East Texas. Supposedly we have supplies but there is a panic and folks keep topping off. I have enough gas for another week so I am hoping that it quiets down by then.
John McSaim is bringin’ the ole to Ole Miss this Friday.
Raven, I’m not sure which way you come to Atlanta but avoid 285/85.
Good morning, pups. It’s Bobo and Herbert. Bobo continues to carry water for his corporate masters, so I’ll just call him Gunga Din. Today he gives us “The Establishment Lives!” His point is that the Paulson plan announced last week is a pure establishment play. It would assign nearly unlimited authority to a small coterie of policy makers. He then tries to make the case that this is a good thing. Mr. Herbert’s column is titled “A Second Opinion?” He says that Henry Paulson has been handed the reins of government, and he’s galloping through the taxpayers’ money like a hard-charging driver in a runaway chariot race.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got a selection of bagels with cream cheese. I’m thinking it’s almost time to start having hot chocolate for breakfast again — even down here there’s a hint of a chill in the morning air. Have a great day.
I wish a reporter would ask him to release more information on his skin cancer. The American public deserves to know exactly how healthy he is. His mind is fading and that could be caused by his age or his cancer could have spread. The public needs to know. I’m not sure that my wingo friends are ready for a Miss Sarah to be president.
I don’t know if you all are getting any of this over there:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/worl…..china.food
Bobo is insane Paulson and friends were the guys who kept saying the economy would be fine in another Friedman unit. I do not trust his plans.
I want the numbers for anybody getting government money on the net, plus how much money they want, how much interest they are going to be charged and how much will we get.
I want an estimate of mow much we will lose if the banks assets do not sell at face value. How much do we lose if the banks assets sell at 90%, 70% 50% etc face value.
Also if the banks assets don’t sell at face value we get more of the bank as collateral.
What concerns me is that the Democrats will probably fold up like cheap lawn chairs again… Lord knows there’s precedent for that happening.
Yes, it’s unbelievable that he never really released his medical records. If we had a network in our pocket, like the repubs have Fox, they’d be hammering that point around the clock. And where are Sarah Palin’s tax returns? I guarantee you we won’t be seeing them. I don’t think she claimed all those family travel expenses as income so those returns will never be released. Where’s the outrage?
Paulson testified to congress that all would be well with the economy I think the words prejury should be used. Its not like this economic collapse was unavoidable or it was not known to happen.
I have been retelling the screaming about this for months well over a year, and I got all my information from the financial blogs and the newspapers.
Is Paulson going to claim that he does not read Paul Krugman and the business pages of the Times?
PERJURY! is not just for lying about laying with interns.
Barney Frank sound like he is willing to go along with it, if he gets to add some homeowner protection. That scares me. They need to slow this thing down.
The Greatest POW of All Time has to take a nap before his debate?
I’m more hopeful than usual. Although, Dodd did scare me initially when he said that Reid had been calling him and I took it to mean that Reid was pushing for a cave-in. But, this is like Iraq, there are no good options.
If they do the market will fold. Paul Krugman was on KO yesterday saying that he did not know if Paulson’s plan would work, and that Dodds plan was better.
I want a plan that Paul Krugman and Warren Buffet think will work.
Bobo is high if he thinks Paulson is a grown up who will sooth the markets.
EW had a great post yesterday about China wanting Taiwan and how Bush is desperate to have China keep buying our debt.
Is China selling any dairy products to America? Maybe I should give up the cow for awhile.
Is Steele sufficiently upity do ya think? what about Alan Keyes. he’s a negro.
every time she or McCain say the word “transparency” I ask myself that. where the hell arev your tax returns? where’s the cooperation in the investigation that you welcomed? Transparency? McCain/Palin? Bullshit.
Alan despite his reputation as a good speaker lost to Obama in the Illinois Senate race.
LOL. ole’ guy. ole’ ideas.
Jim Martin is running an excellent ad against Saxby Chambliss tying Saxby to George Bush. He won’t win in our red neck state but it’s nice to see him try.
Don’t forget Cindy has a family trust that she is the head of plus her own beer distributorship which means corporate accounts to hide assets.
Not to mention that she used private email to avoid a public record. Do they keep talking transparency to make my head explode?
righty. but he’s an upity negro isn’t he? I guess steele is too and that’s what their looking for. what body language? scratching his nose? what speaking patterns?
I don’t think the Chinese are selling food other than condiments over here in Europe, I haven’t a clue what they would be selling there in the US. Seems though, I read somewhere, they are making inroads into the food chain there. They must be cheaper than Mexican grown products. Unbelievable.
Really just how bad would things have to get for a dem to win their?
There is a very good chance the economy will get worse before election day. Also if the terrorists in Pakistan really did use Aluminium powder when they blew up that hotel then there friends in Iraq might soon be getting fuel air bomb tech.

Lots of cement walls in the green zone.
Thanks, BL — you’re a gentleman and a scholar. I don’t care what Alberto Gonzales said about either of us.
While Johnny is taking his nap, Sarah will be hiding from the press. What a strong team these two are!
They didn’t choose Steele for his speech pattern or anything else. As a matter of fact, I’d be very surprised if Steele really is the sparring partner. The only reason they chose Steele is so that the press would report it, voters would talk about it and thus remind everyone that Obama is black.
A Conor Cruise O’Brien in Ireland coined a new word, an acronym, GUBU which entered the language, you there may be in need of it. GUBU stands for: Grotesque, Unbelievable, Bizarre, Unprecedented. (sounds like NYT opinion)
More interesting times ….
Obama is Black!
Why didn’t anyone notice this sooner?
I guess you would call JohnnyMac a “method actor” since he is using a “black man” as a surrogate for Barack.
If John McCain was the president during last week’s Wall Street collapse, you know damn well he would have given a Medal of Freedom to:
George Bush
Henry Paulson
Ben Bernanke
Thanks, BL — you’re a gentleman and a scholar.
I wish I could even say you were half right. But I can’t.
because his mom is white?
As portrayed to me by a long-time agent of the Shadow Government with very high clearance levels in the 2004 time frame:
These people are the enemies of you, your friends and your family members. They despise you. Their self-perceived superiority has resulted in the total destruction of your country.
You just never got the memo – because they control the entire message.
You think this financial disaster that they have intentionally caused is not directly related to stolen elections and 9/11. You think these elections matter. You think there are two political parties that just coincidentally each comprise exactly half of the US population.
Nothing is as it appears. NOTHING.
As I am retired on a fixed from going up income I have watched my “back up” plan go to hell in a hand basket over the last few months, years, whatever, I can only hope that if I am going to be walking the streets with a pushcart for my waning years I will have the pleasure of watching the thieves from bushco and their various subsidiaries go to the pokey. Not likely to happen, I am sorry to say, with the pathetic Dems that are in “leadership” positions today. Too big to fail should read too old to be left behind.
Since Johnny is using a black man to practice debating with, I wonder if Barack has picked an old man from the local nursing home who has dementia and a very bad temper to practice with? LOL
Crap the Rhythmic speaking patterns African American preachers use that and the rhyming words used as memory devices.
Wait until Obama builds up a rhythm and then practice breaking the rhythm, wait until Obama starts rhyming and the repeat his rhymed words in a funny/saracstic voice.
Is McCains debate stand in for Obama a Baptist or even worse a Baptist preacher?
Every Preacher gets heckled sometime I’m sure the fundies are sending McCain their worse heckle stories.
Well thats what I would do anyway if I were McCain.
There’s an editorial in the Savannah Daily Disappointment today titled “Not So Fast,” urging people not to rush for early voting, which starts today. Hmmm… Scared they’ll opt for that uppity black man because the economy is tanking and they’re terrified?
I’m off to labor in the salt mines, where there is no FDL.
Well if you cut the food with poison I’m sure that helps lower the cost.
When anyone sees CT Tuttle please show them this dated 2008 September 23:

Have an interesting day ……
THINK BACK.
Remember when there were no 24/7 cable news channels? Remember when there were no TV shows devoted solely to politics?
When election cycles were over, they were OVER. Those who were elected set about doing the people’s business, and the people got back to focusing on the issues that MATTER.
Look at what the system of Politics hath wrought.
This country has been reduced to EXACTLY what our MASTERS have chosen for us.
Bickering over which preordained puppet will be (s)elected by the globalists to (appear to) run the country is just masturbation.
Only men and women of low moral character (subject to bribes and blackmail) are even allowed in to the political arena in the first place. Why do you think the Congress is so complacent and compliant? They all work for the same boss – but it’s not you.
The social scientists and propagandists have managed to divide the country in half, with people who call themselves Democrats and Republicans talking AT each other 24/7 – as if it mattered.
We are all mindless sheep, doing as we are programmed by the images we see on our screens and the messages that are conveyed to us by Used Car Salesman who just happen to have been put in positions of (apparent) power by those in REAL POWER.
Since 1950, the Council on Foreign Relations has been David Rockefeller’s child. The CFR serves the interests of Rockefeller’s global empire of oil and financial interests (Exxon, Chase Manhattan Bank, JP Morgan Chase).
The media would have you honoring those who should be arrested for high treason.
lol. Someone should do a mocking diary. “Since McC picked Steele, who should Obama choose?”
Modest too huh:)
They tried to get Strom Thurmond, but, inconveniently, he is still daed.
Republicans down here vote strictly for guns and religion. Sarah Palin is a hero for just that reason.
A lot of the garlic that is sold here in the USA comes from China. Check out the labels on garlic powder and you will see most are a product of China. I know Goya brand is a product of the USA.
Also when buying Halloween candy, check to see where the candy is made.
Some companies list the country of origin on the package, most don’t.
have a good one. or best one you can. i haven’t read the Sentinel yet. maybe somebody is coming up with a realistic assessment of the size of the Palin crowd sunday. but i’ll let that go. no big deal.
What I read was the melamine was used to increase the protein rate in the foods, increasing their value as food. YIMV (Your Interpretation May Vary).
Don’t worry Bush is creating a reverse shock doctrine to change their minds FDR carried the South too:)
Have a good day all.
Exactly Solai. ;-)
Beerfart Liberal, Strom is still dead? Are you sure? He seems to be alive in so many republics left behind. See how bad the rapture is? Our Earth is hurting! Rapture these assholes up, please!
I hope that you are right but there are some that are blaming FDR and a Carter era rule that gave blacks the ability to buy homes, for the current crisis. Keep the fire going going. I’ll check in later.
Thanks for the information I do eat allot of garlic normally fresh though. I thought Goya was a Mexican product its in all the Mexican stores in Illinois?
My relatives told me it was Mexican, I’ll check the labels next time I go shopping.
CNBS is set to broadcast a live remote from Detroit revealing a new line of Chrysler vehicles – all of which are covered-up with individual car covers. Given Chrysler’s future, they may as well be “body bags.”
Good morning all,
My thought is that Don Rickles might be a good sparring partner but then he is not a POW
There’s always Frank Lautenberg, my former Senator, but he’s one of ours.
One last OT. See what happens when you have a uppity Secretary of State on the job (or not)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asi…..628955.stm
I’m sure its a cheaper way to increase the protein in food, but are some proteins poison? I just heard the words kidney failure as I was switching channels so I admit that I just assumed poison.
Rachel Maddow was on fire last night and I loved it when Pat Buchanan said we’re in this crisis because of all those liberal mortgages given out to people who couldn’t afford them. Rachel leaned back in her chair and laughed her ass off! Fun to watch! She must have known Pat would be reduced to blaming the liberals instead of the Big Corps who were passing out mortgages like candy to a child. Yep, even those making $80,000/year with $125,000 racked up on credit cards and had bad credit also got a mortgage of $1.2 million! Pat didn’t want to talk about it any further. Commercial break.
Goya is Mexican/Latin products however they are an American company. I know around here in NJ I can packaged fresh garlic that is grwon in the USA, but it’s a challenge.
At Trader Joes a couple months ago they had garlic powder that specically said California Garlic Powder, and had a blurb on the label about it.
I’m a fanatic about reading food labels, always have been. I want to know what I’m eating.
That’s it!!!! Pat Buchanan can be McCain’s stand-in. He’ll do it.
mornin’
7:30 am – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Financial Institutions Subcmte., Chair
8:00 am – Rep. Mike Pence (R-IA), Republican Study Committee, Member
8:30 am – Stephen Verdier, Independent Community Bankers of America – Senior Vice President
Goya!!! O boy-a!!!
Maybe we can convince the Christians that the November election this year is actually Rapture Day and they should start packing for it? Nothing would make me happier. ;-)
Yes! The crazy old man who screams at trees in the park! Perfect!
so here’s a question;
if we take the entire bailout, including future “tweak” fees, devide that among those who have been or have payed taxes, (do not exclude the unemployed or the homeless), how much does each person get?
melamine is added to food so that the food tests as if it has more protein in it, it doesn’t add protein.
I want the figure to exclude students and those who have not payed into the system yet
oh did I mention?;
GOOD MORNING FIREDOGS!
Rattle snake venom is a protein, spider venom is also IIRC. Most enzymes are proteins as well as are vitamins.
They have good products, always been very happy with them. The heir is a Republican who was going to run here in Jersery but had to drop out about some ethical thing. Go figure.
Blaming others for your problems is easy until the problem gets to big to lie to yourself any more then either you quit lying to yourself or you die.
Drinking, the economy, a bad marriage its all the same sure there are always circumstances that are not fair but in the end how you react to the unfairness is under your control.
Blaming others and pretending that you don’t have the power to change things is normally one of the worse things that you can do.
However trying to remember the day after, remembering how the hangover felt before I start drinking seems to help discourage me.
We need to make sure the GOP never forgets the Bush years.
you guys would NOT believe the new york post headline this morning
[warning, throw something at the window alert]
oh yea, they are blaiming the crash on the dems making sure bush isn’t stealing more of our money, oh yea, they want us to just give this country away, right now, to paulson
and they are trying to get some fever against the dems for this!
man oh man, the new york post needs to be decertified as a new paper, they are a propaganda machine
I learn something new here every day:)
I aklways liked them when I lived up there. i remember when you had to go to a bodega to get them. then they used to carry some in the supermarkets. Now they practically have a whole aisle. Good stuff.
Chris Rock lambastes Bill Clinton on David Letterman:
http://blogs.courant.com/roger…..lette.html
Yesterday, CNBC interviewed Hillary Clinton about the financial mess and Hillary was asked about “lipstick” and “Palin”. I thought her answer was great. She said there are more pressing issues to be talking about and AMERICA NEEDS A DEMOCRAT IN THE WHITE HOUSE at this time in history.
Are Hillary & Bill not sleeping with each other anymore because they don’t seem to be on the same page at the moment?
Hillary on MSNBC
The Senate banking Committee meets at 9:30 am et with Marshal Dodd at the helm, Bernanke and Paulson will be witnesses.
CSPAN 3
Me too
(fwiw I am not a scientist, polymath maybe, take the facts with appropriate dose of salt)
We need some push back. The Dems should haul Treasury Secretary Paulson in for Perjury I know he testified that all would be well with the economy as soon as home prices stabilize which should be soon.
Everything will be fine as soon as the Fed forces Bear Stearns out of business quick.
Helicopter Ben has some explaining to do too.
No deal unless the GOP admits that they were wrong. We have the leverage.
Congress leaves in a week to campaign for the election the GOP is in big trouble nationally if Congress has to stay in session another week to pass a deal that will hurt the GOP more than us.
Does the GOP want to risk campaigning with no deal? Its their base that is concerned with the economy more than us.
I saw we up the ante on this one.
Hillary asked if Palin is qualified. She punts. Talks about the top of the ticket. I’ve seen that question asked 3 times now without an answer. WTF, say ‘no’ and then bash McC for choosing her.
Hillary is doing great this morning. Bill is another story. The man is an imbecile.
Yeah, she could have been more specific on Palin, but I’m sure if Hillary is bashing a woman, it just wouldn’t look good and would cancel out everything she and her supporters argued about.
Hillary is walking on a thin plank for sure.
I’m sure that you will find lots of like minded folks here at the Lake:)
but won’t hillary at least be perceived as having greater… what?.. standing?.. not the right word but it’ll have to do…. to bash a woman since she is one? I believe it doesn’t matter she has equal standing to bash anybody in need of bashing. but the perception might be that she can do it more so than others and that ought to shut up Repb cries that criticsm of Plain is just sexism.

Carlyle Chief Ready To Go Bargain-Hunting
David Rubenstein, managing director of Washington’s Carlyle Group private-equity giant, said firms such as his would play a big role in eventually buying back from the government those private assets it is poised to bail out.
In an interview moments ago on CNBC, Rubenstein said the coming transaction between the federal government and private buyers will be “one of the largest wealth transfers in the history of the country.”
Rubenstein would not specify which assets Carlyle might buy, but did not rule out the purchase of the risky mortgage-backed securities that launched the current crisis.
So far this year, Rubenstein said Carlyle has invested more money outside the United States than inside, though he expects that to change as he bargain-hunts in the coming sales.
Rubenstein predicted he will be joined by overseas money, seeking good deals in the U.S., including sovereign wealth funds, and “we shouldn’t discourage that,” he said.

Mike Pence is a shifty, lying weasel. Every time I see him on C-Span I cringe.
With regards to Hillary being asked about Serial Liar Sarah, it’s like a trap to start a fight between the top woman in the political parties. Have these same reporters asked other high level politicians if they feel that Serial Liar Sarah is qualified?
It’s also another opener to the “experience” issue, which is one where Hillary’s arguments were the same as McCain’s. The Dems should view the Palin nomination as having taken wiped out the experience issue. I think Hillary did well to leave it and stick with downgrading McCain.
You are right. To Hillary, though, she has to walk a fine line unfortunately.
I think abusing mccain is the best strategy, both can be accomplished quite nicely though;
“here is a presidential candidate that actually has palin as his running mate, someone who appears to be a pathological liar who can’t even correct her lies when she knows they are exposed”
stuff like that would be nice to see
Ah, SCTV, with Eugene Levy when he was really and truly funny. One of the dancers is costume designer, Juul Haalmeyer, who loved to muck in, with the visual comedy.
