Here’s an interesting piece of reporting from the Wall Street Journal:

The first debate, on Friday, will be at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, where in 1962 the enrollment of James Meredith, its first African-American student, touched off a deadly riot. The debate commission had directed that this debate would cover domestic issues, but the two campaigns agreed to change it to foreign policy. Sen. McCain’s advisers wanted to lead off with his strong suit, foreign policy. Sen. Obama’s advisers wanted to have the last debate center on domestic issues, particularly the economy, which they believe will benefit their candidate. Also, some Obama advisers said they didn’t want the issue of race “front and center” during a debate.

Easiest. Negotiation. Ever. Both campaigns thought that having the foreign policy debate first and the domestic policy debate last would help their cause. This was the reverse of how the Commission on Presidential Debates had set things up originally.

Nate’s commentary is really excellent. I enjoy reading his stuff.

It is my most fervent wish that Obama uses the foreign policy/ national security debate to hammer home the point that our economy is our strength and only hope of having a secure future.

Gutting domestic spending on education and research have compromised our ability to maintain a technological advantage and that weakens national security.

Showing up in China and Russia and Japan every day, hat in hand, to borrow money to buy bullets is not a sustainable, productive foreign policy.

These are not difficult concepts to follow but I think they could make McShitforbrain’s head explode.

They definitely took a turn for the better last week.

“We, alongside the mujahedeen, bled Russia for 10 years until it went bankrupt and was forced to withdraw in defeat,” bin Laden said.

He also said al Qaeda has found it “easy for us to provoke and bait this administration.”

The conservatives are in league with bin Laden’s attempt to bankrupt the U.S.

Good Morning! We need to continue calling our representatives so they do not cave. McCain has put himself in a position to come out against the bailout, if need be, to win votes. Although the financial community is ailing, there is not need for a fast fix.

I don’t get all this freaking out about the 3rd ID and their potential “domestic” use. The 101st was there when they integrated the University of Mississippi. I bet we can find plenty of posts here complaining that they should have sent regular Army troops to help at Katrina. Take a deep breath.

FWIW Large fluctuations in dollar in the last fortnight.

Dollar had dropped vis-a-vie the Euro to $1.40 from $1.60 (numbers are approximated and time of $1.60 concurrent with $140./bbl oil) and was stabilizing about $1.42 until last few days it shot back up to $1.48. A recent check has $1.46 (concurrent with price spike in oil).

Raven, Gas stations around here are running low on gas. There were large lines at the stations that had gas. How’s Athen’s faring?

Funny you should axe! I just came from filling up because I have to drive into the ATL this morning. Two stations I passed were out and the one I found was limiting to ten gallons. I wanted to see if they had the pumps set to stop at ten but I could only take 9.3!

Yesterday, I was going to fill my gas container so that I could come home and fill the mower. Two of the three stations were closed and the other had long lines. Well, needless to say the mowing did not get done.

Atlanta is serviced through the major pipeline coming out of East Texas. Supposedly we have supplies but there is a panic and folks keep topping off. I have enough gas for another week so I am hoping that it quiets down by then.

It would assign nearly unlimited authority to a small coterie of policy makers. He then tries to make the case that this is a good thing. Mr. Herbert’s column is titled “A Second Opinion?” He says that Henry Paulson has been handed the reins of government, and he’s galloping through the taxpayers’ money like a hard-charging driver in a runaway chariot race.

I want the numbers for anybody getting government money on the net, plus how much money they want, how much interest they are going to be charged and how much will we get.
I want an estimate of mow much we will lose if the banks assets do not sell at face value. How much do we lose if the banks assets sell at 90%, 70% 50% etc face value.
Also if the banks assets don’t sell at face value we get more of the bank as collateral.

Paulson testified to congress that all would be well with the economy I think the words prejury should be used. Its not like this economic collapse was unavoidable or it was not known to happen.

Goya is Mexican/Latin products however they are an American company. I know around here in NJ I can packaged fresh garlic that is grwon in the USA, but it’s a challenge.

At Trader Joes a couple months ago they had garlic powder that specically said California Garlic Powder, and had a blurb on the label about it.

I’m a fanatic about reading food labels, always have been. I want to know what I’m eating.

Yesterday, CNBC interviewed Hillary Clinton about the financial mess and Hillary was asked about “lipstick” and “Palin”. I thought her answer was great. She said there are more pressing issues to be talking about and AMERICA NEEDS A DEMOCRAT IN THE WHITE HOUSE at this time in history.

Carlyle Chief Ready To Go Bargain-Hunting
David Rubenstein, managing director of Washington’s Carlyle Group private-equity giant, said firms such as his would play a big role in eventually buying back from the government those private assets it is poised to bail out.

In an interview moments ago on CNBC, Rubenstein said the coming transaction between the federal government and private buyers will be “one of the largest wealth transfers in the history of the country.”

Rubenstein would not specify which assets Carlyle might buy, but did not rule out the purchase of the risky mortgage-backed securities that launched the current crisis.

So far this year, Rubenstein said Carlyle has invested more money outside the United States than inside, though he expects that to change as he bargain-hunts in the coming sales.

Rubenstein predicted he will be joined by overseas money, seeking good deals in the U.S., including sovereign wealth funds, and “we shouldn’t discourage that,” he said.

With regards to Hillary being asked about Serial Liar Sarah, it’s like a trap to start a fight between the top woman in the political parties. Have these same reporters asked other high level politicians if they feel that Serial Liar Sarah is qualified?

It’s also another opener to the “experience” issue, which is one where Hillary’s arguments were the same as McCain’s. The Dems should view the Palin nomination as having taken wiped out the experience issue. I think Hillary did well to leave it and stick with downgrading McCain.

You are right. To Hillary, though, she has to walk a fine line unfortunately.
