"She was everything I thought she would be: Smart, great sense of humor and loves to talk about family," Deen told PEOPLE of meeting Mrs. Obama.
The pair prepared fried shrimp for Deen’s show and Deen said, "I can tell she spends time in the kitchen – she was very relaxed when we cooked. And that lady is a good eater."
Not that it shows. "Did I tell you she is in the best shape ever? Everyone was staring at her amazing arms!" said Deen.
Food Network doesn’t allow political ads, so this was huge in terms of reach-out. Both campaigns have been running ads designed to hit female viewers — during talk shows, soap operas, you name it. Demographic strategery.
This year, the NYTimes writes about the Oprah-ization of campaign marketing to women. And Karen Tumulty at Time has hit on a "maxed-out moms" phrasing for the volatile bloc candidates are courting.
We’ve said repeatedly that women’s voices are key as we’ve urged more political involvement for women for the last several years. But this year’s outreach to women has been broader in its appeal.
There’s policy wonkery, sure, but also a decided "every woman" bent from both campaigns: from People to USWeekly, from Vogue to Ladies Home Journal, from Ellen to The View. Both are reaching out to not-so-politically-motivated women.
If it encourages women to get active, make things better, ask tough questions, then I’m all for it. But I’m not sure it does. What do you think?

Zed!
I watched it when it aired. Michelle was a bit reserved…overall I think she did a great job, and the shrimp looked amazing..Paula was totally smitten.
I don’t watch cooking shows since I don’t cook *g* but however you can reach potential voters is great
Pumsky?
Really?
I may have to rethink my position on the Obamas.
Hooray for Food Network. Haven’t watched for some time but I really like Paula Deen. Quite a catch for both of them.
OT near crude oil future is now trading at $113.05/bbl. This has nothing to do with Ike and everything to do with the liquidity that Paulson and Bernanke injected into the financial markets. This was so predictable.
deep fried snickers? wow? I thought the deep fried candy bars were just a gross brit thing (mars bars)
Show was great. I think Michelle was intimidated a bit by Paula!
Food Network does not do politics so I thought it particularly interesting that Michelle would be invited on. I’m sure she scored major points with Southern women who love Paula Deen.
Couldn’t have hurt by any means. And hey, it was fun.
this link is for you then, wobbly
Deep fried fair fare
OT, follow up on Barney Frank meeting
Treas accepts govt getting equity stake, oversight. Still in contention is executive comp & some other item I missed while typing. Maybe foreclosures.
After the 2004 election results, for 6 months the only TV I could watch was the Food Network.
Paula Deen for U.N. Ambassador!
Dow currently down 220. Down 400 one day, up 400 the next, down 220 the day after. I’m no stock broker but this can’t be good for the long-term. Many women I know handle the financial side of their households. If Michelle gets them to vote by going on cooking shows, Ellen, Oprah, or whatever, that’s a “good thing.”
Another OT via Froomkin:
Bush: I asked Hank Paulson — who, by the way, in my judgment, is doing a fabulous job.
I think we have our Heckuva job moment here.
I think Paula will have some influence here – women and southerners
Christy, I continue to scratch my head in how to reach those unmarried women voters – most of them are too damn busy/stressed to watch Paula. it’s almost too late for this cycle, but I have urged and urged again the Obama campaign to have national ads showing these women have much power they have simply by showing up to vote (15 milllion!)
that is just foul.
Ha!
Considering how soon Treas caved on some items, I’m wondering if Paulson didn’t make the initial offer so extreme that caving to Ds on some things would make the final bailout more to W admin liking.
Puke….deep fried pickled eggs….oy
More from Bush:
“And, you know, I know a lot of people here in Washington, Mr. President, saying, well, who to blame? Now is not the time to play the blame game. There’s plenty of time to analyze the situation. But from our perspective, it’s time to solve the problem, and that’s what we did.”
All the great stuff. Ducking responsibility for the mess he created, then declaring the crisis is over because, well just because.
sad to say but mr wobbs is quite fond of deep fried oreos ( I have no idea where he found them) and the occasional mars bar but he is from fish-n-chips land so i’m not that surprised
Deep-Fry nirvana can be reached with the Deep-Fried Twinkie!
sure it is. it’s your fault shrub and some dems fault and republican deregulation policies. It’s election time, now is the time to point fingers
The Obama camp is rather savvy with their outreach and communication. I’d be interested to see what the demographics are for Paula’s show. I’m sure there was a group that the Obama camp wanted to introduce Michelle to so they could see she’s not the monster that some have portrayed her to be.
There’s always Scottish Eggs
And Gretchen Morgenson on the Paulson plan via Froomkin: “Taxpayers deserve better than this, of course. But we have no lobbyists, so we get skinned.”
I think that it’s unfortunate that in American politics, candidates and candidates’ spouses have to put up with this kind of thing.
I think Michelle Obama is just great, a national asset. But the idea that it helps the Obama campaign for her to appear on a cooking show is kind of a shame. Not that I object to her doing it; when the other side has painted you as a monster, just showing up and being human and real helps.
*gag* I thought it was a mutated catepillar for a moment.
I love pickled eggs, but you wouldn’t get me anywhere near them deep fried.
Okay, I will admit to having eaten deep fried brownies last summer.
Twice.
I had those before I became vegan and they are actually quite good
I could eat those! (I can’t deal with pickled eggs too well)
You would think that he could learn that his opinion is worthless/uninformed, as in Who Cares?
I thought it was interesting with that match-up myself, given how Food Network usually stays far away from politics. Thought maybe the two of them met at some event and hit it off. Haven’t been able to dig up the genesis of the booking, though — would be fun to know who called whom on that one. *g*
I guess they were good since you had them twice? seems like a waste of a perfectly good brownie
The Bush administration started with Enron’s collapse in 2001, and ended with Wall Street’s collapse in 2008. Perfect bookends to this disastrous Presidency.
I love contrasting her with the women McSlime seems to prefer.
Profits all around for their friends.
Go here to list your crappy assets you wish the govt to buy

I can’t wait until Palin appears on Paula’s show pushing mooseburgers with lipstick sauce..
moving to Texas from California, I laughed my butt off when I saw deep friend pickles on a menu . . .until I tasted them – yummy !
but the guy who keeps winning the Deep Fry Contest @ Texas State Fair won again last year with his Deep Fried Coke Syrup rolled in cookie crumbs
Maybe it’s payback for Cindy claiming the Food Network’s recipes as her own family recipes.
Now where have those been all my life!
and it ain’t ovre until Obama takes office, if we end up with McBush oy!
I wondered about that, too. *G*
I shudder to think about Bobby Flay doing a “Southwestern BBQ Throwdown” against John McCain.
wow. that sounds soooooooo wrong LOL
LOL McCain is going to have to do a serious CostCo run
thought that as well.
Perfect! I got shit for Henry to buy!
Loving how warm and friendly Paula is with Michelle. Lots of women watch her show. This is good.
It does seem like there are lots of new women faces reporting on the news lately.
Beg pardon, i’m slow, but referring back to McCain’s electric cars, isn’t that the same make of car that Poppy Bush was driving around in Kennebumfuck? Did all rich republicants get one?
Finally from Froomkin, something of an outlier but still:
Has anyone asked about how many cooks that family has? Inquiring minds want to know.
Oooooh, Holden’s going to want another pony…
About time.
Goodness, where’s he gonna put ‘em all?
Hillary’s up on CNBC.
What’s she saying eCAHN?
If it ain’t fried…
MSNBC.com – Oil rises $25 per barrel
Here’s my two cents: Anything that the Democrats can do to make the the American electorate see the Obamas as ‘those really sharp fun smart neighbors that you love to have coffee with’, the better it is. There are people out there sending out the most disgusting dvds trying to equate Barack Obama with terrorists; there are ads out there trying to turn them into alien creatures…appealing to the absolute worst, the darkest parts of America’s soul. A little time on the cooking network is not a bad thing…
OT via Lindsay: Palin’s hacker arrested.
http://www.kxmb.com/News/277944.asp
This cooking appearance sure trumps plagiarized recipes from Princess Cindy
Christy, I couldn’t tell if you were asking if these shows turn women into activists…or if the shows get women to think about politics. I think the shows know what women care about and if the pols care, they know where to find the women and speak to them. This seems authentic and not manufactured. I think it’s great Paula Deen had Michele on.
Did they mention he’s the son of a Democratic party local official, ‘cuz they did on the news earlier today?
Wall Street Journal
“A hacker last week broke into one of the Yahoo Inc. email accounts that Gov. Palin uses, revealing as evidence a few inconsequential personal messages she has received since John McCain selected her as his running mate. The McCain campaign confirmed the break-in and called it a “shocking invasion of the governor’s privacy and a violation of law”.
We get hacked every minute of every day compter, cell, and phones it is all in a data bank.
So McCain, whg supported FISA is now chocked!!!
Innocent until proven guilty.
Appearing on Paula’s Party was a great moment–the kinetic energy between them was authentic and fun. Michelle is clearly a woman comfy in a kitchen who doesn’t hesitate to say that she campaigns a couple days a week but the rest of the time she’s Mom. And cooking’s a family activity for the Obamas–youngest the shrimp cleaner.
A real all-American family…will represent all of us with positive authentic family values in the White House.
My understanding is all the
wivesspouses? have been invited, Michelle’s the one who accepted. So far.Irony is lost on the GOP.
link doesn’t mention arrest
Maybe we’ll see Cindy on Ace of Cakes.

Uncreative D talking points. Accountability. May have to let Treasury manage it temporarily, but should set up something like HOLC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HOLC
This week?
If not, come back after election & do it.
Hillary went to talk with NYFRB prez to discuss local ramifications.
End of interview:
Pic of Sarah Palin with gigantic lipstick. Do you find that insulting to use lipstick as a symbol for women?
Well, everyone needs a laugh and I use it myself, but I prefer to focus on serious matters.
Link
She started it!
Looks like a kid who was just fucking around, showing off to his friends.
“You’re not gonna believe what I fucking did…Palin has a fucking Yahoo account…under her own name!”
Unfortunately, McSlime’s gonna come down hard on him.
Interviewer was a woman, and I got the feeling that she is insulted by all the lipstick stuff. As I was rereading my comment it occurred that I should have stated interviewer was a woman.
Shocked I say….Surely, no one from the Pukes are listening in to everything the Obama campaign is saying or doing…the Pukes are much to conservative to partake in such a thing.

I glad someelse took note of that “spin”. It really demeans the value of FDLs great post when the facts are mispepresented. Please be honest and accurate.
Biggest daily move on oil today….EVER….who needs Space Mountain.
New post
You’re right, I should have been more accurate. Thanks.
Todd- the shadow governor??? Mr. vice preznit? Did they invite him???
If it encourages women to get active, make things better, ask tough questions, then I’m all for it. But I’m not sure it does. What do you think?
i think that it will have that effect of most of the women being exposed to Michele Obama in these “alternate”? media locations. i think it may begin to personalize her in a way that is different for women who don’t traditionally tune into most of the TV shows with formats more predictably political or informative. achieving an introduction (of sorts) through shows such as Paula’s Party, or even Ellen, gives some women a basis for challenging/rejecting the negative way that the GOP machine intentionally frames Michele Obama. at least, for those “low information” swing voters out there who may only be exposed to GOP sound bites of “the angry black woman” again and again.
As an information security professional, I can tell you that any hacker worth his salt will cover his tracks. The article says:
Any “easy trail” that is left behind is likely spoofed.
I wanna see that show! First, I love cooking shows that teach you how to do stuff; second, I love what I’ve seen of Mrs Obama. It’s win-win all the way around. As to her arms, she works out and looks great.
