Reading Glenn Greenwald this afternoon, a commenter’s remark struck me…
No need for pitchforks in the streets. Just encourage the masses of THE PEOPLE to cast their vote on the new unofficial election day, April 15th. That should do it. Good night and good luck Glenn.
Think about that for a moment… even the dullest, non-voting American could be convinced to walk into their payroll department before September 30th this year and "Turn Off" their tax contribution for a month or two… is the IRS going to prosecute every single American who participates in this act of Civil Disobendience for not paying their taxes? Good luck with that.
Seriously, why wait until next April? I think that if it were done say next month, Congress might quickly get the message when no money arrived in the US Treasury between say October 1 and 30 that something is amiss out here in the land of purple mountains majesty and amber waves of grain. Also using September 30th has a special significance to the Federal Government… it’s the end of the current government fiscal year, so imagine starting Fiscal 09 with no income. Think that might get the attention of Nancy, Harry, John Boehner and Glorious Beloved Leader?
The Constitution and Declaration of Independence give us each the power to change the country by empowering each of us with the right and responsibility of voting. It seems that the votes of the corporatists, fat-cats, cronies, lobbyists and every other sunshine-avoiding creature inside I-495 in DC is worth more than our collective votes no matter our party because they are backed with hard, cold folding money. I would have to think that every worker who keeps that money in October could, in these days of economic stress could use a months worth of taxes to help their family for the month, rather than sending it off to be mis-spent by our worthless leaders. More than a month of "withholding the withholding" might be harmful, one month would certainly be an attention-getter.
A complete financial withholding of every single dime for a month might actually convince the Beltway Gang, the Villagers and the rest of the wrecking crew inside DC that something needs to be fixed in accordance with the wishes of the people funding the circus, not the ringmasters.

“
GoJo Fish !”Starve the beast and then drown Grover Norquist in a bathtub.
Before this Republican created economic meltdown is over it will not be surprising to see Republican fruit hanging from the trees.
Mod note: Of course we are not suggesting violence, are we?
great, i’m doing it tomorrow. who cares if it’s only two people.
Disobendience
Function : noun
1a : An act or instance of refusal to genuflect.

Let’s have a Paulson tea party.
re: the November election:
I figure that both candidates are going to need to name the person he intends to install as Secretary of the Treasury before November.
Wonder if McCrazy will have the balls to go ahead and say it right out loud? “(Phil Gramm)”
Pelosi Statement on Legislation to Address Crisis in Financial Markets
Just out of curiosity, is urging people not to pay their federal taxes an actionable offence, or just free speech? My guess is IOKIYAR.
Nah, McCain’s gonna name David Copperfield as SecTreasury … will make $$$ disappear faster than Hank …
Mc Cain and Obama on 60 minutes
i know what you have in mind is quite different, but nevertheless one might want to get some advice from the folks who’ve been doing it long term as an anti-war protest:
national war tax resistance coordinating committee.
also, tax resistance has a long, patriotic history in our country. as a new englander, i like to refer to thoreau’s civil disobedience.
Certainly not suggesting violence just pointing out an historical fact that when in the past the people have been threatened, cheated, lied to and their well being put into jeopardy the righteous indignation of an abused people have been known to take out their vengance on those responsible. Who has put the nation and the vast majority of it’s people in jeopardy? The Republicans.
God he looks bad.
I don’t think you HAVE to pay taxes throughout the year. the taxes are due April 15. we’ll see what’s shaking by that time.
McCrazy on 60 Minutes – saying first that the de-regulation he supported “helped the economy grow”.
And yes, America, that would be the same economy he describes as a “ponzi scheme” less than 2 minutes later….
First 60 minutes in HD is not helping McCain.
good work Pelosi
oh BOY! nancy made a STATEMENT!!!!1!
I’m SURE she means business and would NEVER EVER EVER EVR EVER NOT IN AMILLION BILLION KAJILLION YEARS utterly backd won and do whatever Steny and Boehner tell her to do.
Raven !
How’ve you been, Dude ?
Scrub defense spending. The war isn’t counted in all this bullshit right?
Fine as frog hair.
U?
Ian, I hope there’s more to her than just strong words followed by the usual caving to Bush …
Great, thanks for asking !
First 60 minutes in HD is not helping McCain.
somebody give the man a shovel….
Now he’s bragging about having bee chairman of the Commerce Committee.
Thanks you Senator, our video stock with regard to that particular point was getting dangerously low…
Will someone ask him what’s changed since the Keating scandal to protect the American citizen from Corporate greed ?
There’s this also.
Obama Picks Up Phone on Economy

This is rather shocking pushback and deserves attention.
Eyeball to eyeball nuclear combat with the Russkies
Scott Pelli is interviewing McCain on 60 Minutes. The interview would give the appearance of being more honest if Pelli would wipe the barbecue sauce off his chin.
Dead GI’s is what bein prez is all about.
This crisis is the economic equivelant of Katrina. I was watcning CNN’s money show last night — happened on it quite by chance. They were taking calls and giving answers. Nobody on the programme supported the $700 (let’s say $ Trillion bailout without some oversight. Most people and everyone on the panel were pissed as hell, and the rhetoric was positively populist. It’s hard to know whether the corporate master’s will put the lid on this, but they may decide they can sell more soap catering to people’s anti-wall-street emotions than by pulling for wall street.
People were talking about their grandparents dissolving in tears for fear of what might be happening to their retirement nest egg. The baby-boomers are also worried, since the house is no longer cashable, and the cash isn’t either.
I am reminded of the priceless line from Fawltey Towers, ‘Don’t mention the war.’
((( Teddy )))
I hope Pelosi & Co. picks up on Obama’s stance and tell Georgie Boy and his Boys to shove off !
Will someone ask him what’s changed since the Keating scandal to protect the American citizen from Corporate greed ?
I seriously doubt that that question will be asked publicly before the November election, unfortunately.
Yes it is, I have to say it looks like a coordinated effort to hold their ground.
I know … I’m just incredibly
naivehopeful … *g*This ugly rush to enact something is the umpteenth repetition of the Bush program: scare the crap out of the democrats and watch them kowtow to the Dear Leader.
Don’t think. Thinking is for wimps. ACT.
What could go wrong with this program?
If they can hold their ground and hang this debacle around Bush/McCain’s neck, it will give the Dems a huge advantage in Nov. … unless Bush talks tough and gets them to cave yet again …
He was allowed to bring props, great! Where’s Katie she could have taken out her tissue to hand him.
Dinner Bell rings … have a great evening y’all !
That was not a GI Issue dog tag.
Dead GI’s is what bein prez is all about.
Did you hear him come anywhere near saying the word “sorry”?
I didn’t.
One point, it was about Afghanistan and not Iraq. (ducking)
the country was informed by george will this morning (one of the talking heads programs – they’ve all run together in my mind), that populism is the opposite of leadership.
i think what he meant was that if a politician does what s/he’s told by the Very Serious People who fancy themselves the deciders, that’s leadership. but if a politician responds to the will of the electorate, that’s anti-leadership.
still trying to understand what is meant by the term “elitist” – but imo george will qualified as one today.
Aloha, Jo Fish! The Huffpo’s cry for pitchforks in the streets, which Confederate Yankee subsequently derided has created quite a feud between the two sides… Interestingly, one repug commenter had remarked that we’re incapable of planning, equipping, and/or carrying it out… Several Huffpo commenters ripped into that ridiculous claim… I almost jumped in myself… It really is quite the entertainment…! ;-)
I think there’s been a fundamental change in the polticial dynamic in the last month. We have a strong candidate, and people are aware of their pocketbook issues. It’s a combination that we haven’t had for a long time.
If Pelosi and Reid cave on this in the next seven days, neither deserves to spend an additional 24 hours in their highly-paid, over-perked offices.
I am so sick of Dems caving on everything when Beloved Leader yells “Boo!” it’s not funny.
That should’ve been to 42 not 46.
Reading the draft legislation yesterday, and thinking on it for hours, I have concluded: this is only partly about Wall St.
Connecting the dots from Russia-Georgia-South Ossetia, and their reaction that they would not object to a new Cold War … Paulson as Economy Czar — of the world. Visualise Samson in the temple: “I can bring down the pillars of the global economy, don’t screw with me!” Economics as war by other means.
If the transfer of wealth legislation calls for Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfiwitz, Bremer and Rice to be turned over to the War Crimes tribunal at the Hague then this might be a starting point in deliberations on the legislation. If not, tell the Republicans to stick it up their very tight butts.
60 Minutes: Candidates about to tell us “defining moments” that made them who they are today. Any guesses?
pow, pow, pow, pow
“I hold it, that a little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing.” Thomas Jefferson, 1787
and god
Raven, lots of god.
swell
I want so much for Obama to be a transformative President. We need that so much. McCain could look right at Scott and right at the camera and say Sarah is really ready to be President. I am so sick of lies and nonsense.
Yeah, THAT trillion dollars that we didn’t actually have in the Treasury is sure looking like it could be useful just about now.
Then again, the Palin-McCain ticket to Armageddon is talkin’ about two more wars…with Iran and Russia…not to mention North Korea, Venezuela, Syria…but those will likely pay off themselves with oil revenues by the willing folks who are liberated, righhhhhhhhT?????
McCain: “When I met campaign INTERN Cindy Lou Hensley and started the affair that led to my divorce…but successful political career
…wait, I mean the Keating 5 Scandal when I learned that the best strategy to save ones a** is to become a “Maverick”…leak as much dirt about the others involved, and then plead ignorance about my wife’s financial involvement with rich bankers (I learned how important it is to keep ones wealthy benefactors investments well out of the public eye). Sarah Palin learned to climb the political ladder just the same way!
…No! Wait! I mean the time in the Hanoi Hilton when I gave up thinking about “John Sidney McCain” and started thinking about America and what a great country it is. AMERICA, the land where a corrupt hack of a politician can continue to deceive the public year after year. Where one can remake oneself from a wife-cheating schnook and corporate crook to become the Republican nominee of the United States
We should stop paying the Fed Tax on our phone bills, utility bills and anything that we pay monthly for that has a Fed Tax. Attach a note with your payment each month stating that you are withhold the Fed Tax because you object to the federal government not doing proper oversight in implementing the bail out of the financial institutions. Insist that they follow the guide lines as outlined in Obama’s statement about proper oversight and something for home owners. Be sure to put the taxes in a bank account that you can keep separate, and note in your correspondence that you will pay the back taxes once the federal government agrees to the peoples demands.
I don’t think they can turn off your service with this kind of protest.
Spread it around, spread it far. Let’s do this.

This is a brilliant idea!! People should change their exemptions from 0 or 1 to 8 or 9, which I believe is the point at which the Fed would start being concerned, and poss. launch investigations…
Over 50% of people’s Federal Income Tax goes to pay for war, and there is no reason that people shouldn’t be able to be conscientious objectors to war by not paying for it…right?!
Let’s do it, because the Feds can’t fight back against millions saying, “Fuck you…no taxation without representation!”"
