I need help.. For some reason I can’t find the final Senate vote on a bill.

Two pieces of info/history on it:

S. 10, the Energy Policy Act of 2005

On July 30, 2003, the Senate passed S. 14 by a vote of 84-14 as amended to reflect the language of S. 517, the Democratic energy bill from the 106th Congress. The bill provided a comprehensive and balanced energy policy, including a Renewable Portfolio Standard, tax incentives for production of domestic traditional and renewable energy resources, consumer protections, and a comprehensive framework to address global warming. On November 21, 2003, the Senate rejected a cloture motion on the conference report on S. 14 by a vote of 57-40.

Democrats have a wonderful opportunity as the bail out means funding for there agenda is going to the fat cats of Wall Street.
Now they are thinking what that might be.
So along comes Ian and lays the plan out clear as a bell. The safety net for Americans, the rules that regulators need to bridle the Wall Street compulsive gamblers that want us to cover their losses, the alternative energy tax credits and the rest of our progressive agenda.

True… but ES wanted the votes for that Bill for some reason (see post 10). So I gave him the link. It’s got a pretty complicated legislative history which I wouldn’t want to dig through. I’m not sure if it actually came up for a final vote given all the labyrinth of motions.

my D congresswoman is good on a lot of issues, we’ll see how she is on this one

the Democrats must not buckle under to the Repug charges that they are obstructing a solution, blocking progress, etc. by demanding appropriate terms and conditions to the bailout. we must not roll over or rubber-stamp this one, it is too important.

It did clear the conference committee, so it apparently was enacted…!

As a lawyer with a bit of experience with the regulation of public utilities, I’d like to make a modest amendment to your suggestion, Ian: i.e. That Congress take a careful look at law it unwisely repealed in 2005 after doing considerable service for 70 years. This law is the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935. The present crisis resembles the crises(pl) created by the public utility holding company in many ways. In its day, the public utility holding company was the complex derivative of its day, called “pyramiding”, or the excessive use of debt as leverage to acquire control, which was one of the obstacles to economic recovery after 1929. This law was a complex law but was custom made to straddle banking, antitrust and public utility regulation.

I pulled one from wigwam’s list that has 41 Diggs so far and could use more. I know we have some good Diggers here. If you agree with Ian that Obama should suspend his campaign and go to Washington to demonstrate some leadership on the financial mess, you may want to go and Digg it here.

some commenters said it would be a bad idea for him to suspend his campaign. I don’t think it would be necessary for him to do that entirely. He could make plenty of appearances on TV from Washington, but the thrust of his message would be about what Congress needs to do regarding the financial crisis. It does kind of overshadow lipstick on a pig, and whatever.

I just think it would be good to run this one up the Digg flagpole and hope the Obama campaign sees it.

I really like how he’s framing things along the way. Looking ahead, calling Obama (and Dems) to lead, is equally important as analyzing what happened.. since congress is in such a hurry.

I’m convinced that it was planed. The whole name of the game for the Rove/Cheney/Bush administration has been to hollow out the U.S. economy and pocket the proceeds. Recall that bin Laden’s objective is simply to bankrupt us; he’s not so interested in pocketing the proceeds.

No more campaign contributions from Wall Street executives and PACs. Taxpayer dollars should be used to get our nation out of a crisis. They cannot be used to fund giant, powerful lobby operations that will be used to strong arm Congress into making bad policy.
