You all know there is nothing I hate talking about more than money. I loathe worrying about balancing the books, and I am the worst at fundraising. Ever.
But this morning, I wanted to ask for a bit of a donation chip in for FDL, if you can do so.
If only 1000 folks who read this chip in $25 each? Well, that’s $25,000 we didn’t have before, isn’t it?
We’ve been working our rear ends off to give you on the spot coverage — of both political conventions and of things we’re seeing and hearing going into November and beyond. We thought having on-the-ground convention reporting was invaluable, and hope you enjoyed it, too.
But Denver and Minneapolis weren’t free, so a little extra donation fundage would be very much appreciated.
Howie’s worked his tail off bringing in fantastic candidates for Blue America and coming up with a strategy for our Blue America PAC money to be put to good use. And when Howie gets creative, you know there’s something good in the works.
We’ve hosted a number of guests for live chats, and there are more to come. Bev’s gotten some amazing book salon discussions this year, and there are a lot more in the weeks and months ahead. Marcy’s work is superb, TBogg is snarking away, Spencer survived his latest trip to Afghanistan (yay!), Campaign Silo is rocking, Laura Flanders’ roundtables are smoking and our FDL crew is still kicking ass and taking names.
In short, we hope you are enjoying the whole site. We want to keep bringing you even more exciting stuff in the future. Your donation could help us do just that.
After some fits and starts on our site work, we’ve done a little tweaking the last few days. I hope everyone is enjoying a much smoother ride.
But computer geniuses come at an hourly rate, and servers don’t come with 24-hour maintenance service for free, either. We’ve had to chase down some serious-ass "ghosts in the code," and that adds up after a while, now doesn’t it?
So, if the work we do to keep Firedoglake humming along is worth something to you — and you can afford to chip in a bit — we would surely appreciate your donations today.
If you can’t afford it, we completely get that — given the economic and poverty analysis of late, we’re just happy folks can afford an internet connection to keep reading. Your page views and click-thrus on the site do help support our ad revenue, so thank you for reading! We really appreciate it.
Please, donate if you can – any amount — it truly does add up. And take a little time to click thru the ads, too — every click helps. We could really use it and promise to put it to work.
There, that wasn’t so bad, I suppose. (Although I still hate talking money. Ugh.) Also, if folks have suggestions or tips or what have you, feel free to share them here as well. Now, pour yourself another cuppa coffee, sit back and catch us up with how things are going in your neck of the woods. Pull up a chair…
PS — To make up for the icky money talk, here is an amazing YouTube of Jascha Heifetz playing Paganini Caprice No. 24 (Auer Edition with Schumann accompaniment). Accompanist: Emanuel Bay.

Ned!
Christy, can you ask Wall Street for the money? They seem better fit to help out at this point.
Just kidding. ;-)
Good morning!
Cliff Schecter is on fire this morning on C-SPAN! Go Cliff go!!!
Morning Christy,
I donate what I can, it’s worth it knowing we’re getting better government because of FDL.
…it’s a marathon not a sprint, it’s a marathon not a sprint,it’s a marathon not a sprint,it’s a marathon not a sprint,it’s a marathon not a sprint…
Morning all — woke up to fresh, hot bread from the new bread machine this morning. Nummy. How is everyone? (sipping coffee and watching the happy cardinal on my feeder)
btw, I thought the picture above was just gorgeous. Amazing shot on its own, but the photoshopping to play with the light is genius.
Thank you, Christy, for a great site. I’ll definitely donate (what little I can).
Now for Palin, another lie:
http://voices.washingtonpost.c…..c-politics
She was for a pay cut before she was against it.
Cool and crisp here in NoVa. I love fall here.
Well, I’m actually feeling much better; I was feeling particularly grouchy last night, not the least because it was 3 a.m., I couldn’t go to sleep. But, on a more positive note – we moved offices a couple of weeks ago far enough away from the main street that it’s a real hike to go get lunch, so now I bring my lunch…so I have that money left over now and I gave you guys my lunch money. there you go. My hips thank you.
Christy,
Please don’t hesitate to ask, whenever the need arises. You firedoggers are so worth so much more than my pennies.
Joel
Same here — the squirrels have begun fighting over the acorns in the big oak tree across the street. Have been listening to them chatter at each other this morning. And we’ve had a steady stream of happy birdies flying over to the feeders. Have my sunroom windows open to let in some fresh, crisp air…you have to love sweatshirt weather.
yes!
Flashed me back to the first time I saw a huge field of sunflowers bloomin’
was a stunning sight(and they’re good for you too :)
Hi. I’m trying to donate through Paypal, but the link doesn’t work. I’ll log on directly at Paypal, but need to know what email address I should use to get the $$ to you. Help.
I’m in. Don’t take money away from what you would give to FDL, but if you’re wondering where your political campaign donations would do the most good, the next $10,000 donated this month to my campaign will be matched. Double your dollars month!
Hi Christy
There’s just something about a field of sunflowers that makes my soul sing like no other flower. And yes that light is incrediable.
I’ve gone out on Halloween as sunflower, lead a fringe festival parade in Philly as one, and at this one particular party went around handing out sunflower seeds to people and told them to eat me. You haven’t lived until you danced to B52’s dressed as one.
The headpiece is a trip, I have a fake pheasant attached whose name is Butch. I’m 6′4 so it the height and the costume work well together.
I kicked in so youz guys can continue to kick ass.
Hmmmm…sorry about that. There’s a hiccup in the PayPal link. Let me see if I can get that fixed.
We did a server switch earlier this week (have you guys noticed a smoother hum?), and that link may have gotten slightly hinky in the data transfer.
Ooh, thanks for reminding me-gotta fill the bird feeders this morning!
Morning, Millineryman..how’s hats?
Sunny ;)
Check coming at’cha via snail mail.
OMG! If you have pictures, you have to send me one. That sounds like a hoot!
and
Not to out you as one of my operatives, but if the people you’re calling knew this about you, well…that’s not quite acceptable around here :) but it sounds like fun to me. If I didn’t think it would come up later in a debate, I’d tell you about the costumes I wore in Madison on Halloween.
Good morning Toby, hat’s are good. I just had a dream last night about one. It was really beautiful, a lace type cap made out metal. this was the first time I’ve ever really had a dream of one.
I’m working on the next phase of what I’m going to do with them, it’s still in the planing stage however it’s going to something fun with a benefit to some children.
How things with you?
Washington Journal just “lost” the signal to Cliff; wonder whose finger was on *that* button? :-(
Christy – help me out here. I’m fairly sure you went over this before but I’m getting as bad as mcCain here(/s). Remind me again – WHY is it that all of these Rethugs can announce that they won’t comply with subpoenas? Is this right available to all of us, or is it just something you get once you have (R)next to your name? And..is the remedy for this — sending out the county sheriff with a warrant for their arrest? They can’t refuse to be arrested if someone shows up with a warrant, right? I mean, if they don’t want to testify, all they have to do is comply with the subpoena, show up, and take the Fifth…right? And…what DOES subpoena actually MEAN(in a latin sort of way)?
Now you have me curious. *g* Glad to see you this morning, btw — have been missing you through all the campaigning!
Nice job Cliff Schecter!
Verizon
Morning Dawgs
I thought I had more pictures of our sunflowers than this, but this is my son “saluting the flag” in front of one from last year.
Hate it when that happens on a remote. If he was at a local news station, sometimes they cut off your time if they have a breaking story — and you have no idea its going anywhere until after you are off. It’s really freaky.
Chilly – because all of my hat workshop space has been basically occupied by various parts of the house as we’ve been gutting and insulating (Soon! To Be Finished!!), I have not been able to do anything, but we have plans…we also have plans…
I’m in. Well, that’s 4 or 5 out of 1000…keep ‘em coming!
And yes, I can testify, the ghosts in the machine cost money. I know that our own sites have been hard-pressed over the last 5 weeks due to migrations to a new software platform, new servers, attacks by gremlins, bugs in software upgrades, you name it. And readers complain, but they often don’t realize that the people behind the screen have been up all night, may have sacrificed other personal events to make sure that their experience is as seamless as possible even though a confluence of problems and attacks work against them.
And improvements. Jeepers. They cost $$, yet people expect them. Like the greatly improved donations process here — holy cow, what a difference from the early days back on Blogger!!! But somebody had to code that and fix any wrinkles as they popped up.
Put your money where your eyeballs are. You know you’ll get value putting the money here (can’t say that about some banks, eh?).
things are VERY tight here, and most of my disposable income goes to all the critters i rescue, but i will sometin through snail mail, and next month a bit more…GOBAMA lets not undercut him,for now he is the only hope
and this guy sez prison crippled him too much to type
http://cache.boston.com/resize…..3/300h.jpg
He pissed off the neocons! Loved it. The neocons would much rather have the MSM do what they’ve been doing with McCain: HIDING THE TRUTH ABOUT HIM. So, it gave me great pleasure to watch Cliff spanking McCain in front of the neocons this morning without interruption.
Truth is garlic to the neocons. Show your garlic often!!! ;-)
One day I’ll tell the story, and it’s time to get ready for a parade, so you can start missing me again :)
i have a ton of hats…skin cancer x times, but i sure do love em,they say alot about a person imo
how cute!!
It’s a stall tactic that pretty much anyone can attempt — especially if they have vociferously belligerent counsel arguing it for them. But in the end, most judges pretty much stick yer butt in the witness chair if it’s an appropriate subpoena under the law. The trick is to stall just long enough to get past the politically difficult timeframe, which is what the Palins are trying to do with the help of Team McCain, if I’m not mistaken.
OT The Phoney Express gallops on: (Per Krugman)
Here’s what McCain has to say about the wonders of market-based health reform:
“Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation.
is that from this year, today was the first chilly morning here, and i put baby turtle INDOORS.i wont let her hibernate till next year
Yeppers — sounds like my life for the last few months. *g* And others have had it much worse than me in terms of trying to work out the kinks.
Parasols seem to be making a comeback as well: http://www.dailynewstribune.co…..1371443690
WOW!!!
Millineryman — so glad to see you! check out the candidate you helped during the earliest days of her campaign. She’s really come a long way!
I’m in this morning for $25.00. Keep this great community going (well, as far as you can on $25 LOL)!!! ;-)
Did I ever say how much I love reading your “Pull Up a Chair” posts on the weekend. Well, I do.
I do have a photo, I’ll have to scan though, it was back in the day before digital. I’ll get it to you.
There’s a Greek creation myth behind the sunflower. Clytie was a water nymph who was in love with Appollo, and spent her time on land watching him tranverse the sky. After nine days her limbs became rooted in the ground and her face became the flower, which follows the sun across the sky.
This was the influence for the costume. Halloween being the time when the veil between the worlds is lowered, I thought I’d bring Clytie back with an edge.
ahh, will have to rummage through the dress-ups closet to stay in style.
too coolthey dont have to make them that large imo….how are you,and hows the weather up there?
Note to self: clean off the surface of your writing desk before the avalanche of notes and books comes crashing down on your bare feet…
Boy, is that ever a bumper sticker or t-shirt whose time has come.
I’d even go one step further and go “Republicans” vs. just neocons.
After all, they let the neocons hijack their party.
Also, gladly sending some $ via snail mail today for the cause.
If you were here, you could have a nice, warm, fresh slice of whole wheat and oatmeal bread from the new bread machine. :)
what kind of bread machine did you get…do i dare nuy the crack pipe…”g”
that was BUY..the crack pipe…im so addicted to rye bread with seeds
Agh. No idea how I broke that link. I do this all day for a living, and yet I still manage to break a link when commenting.
CHS (42) — yes, I personally think you made one of the biggest sacrifices for this place and for the cause when you were in Denver, while the Peanut was starting school. That was huge, and greatly appreciated.
That’s funny, one never knows the stories behind the voice on the phone now do they :).
I’m sure that will play well after the week we’ve just had in the markets.
I pray this exists somewhere on video tape.
The beauty of McCain is you can use his own words to show he has no clue.
Well, they predicted a killer frost for us this week, but we never got it. Solai is a couple of hours north and east of me, so it is possible she got it up there. It is chilly in the mornings though. We are good, though at the moment I am still trying to finish redoing the house…one room left. At the same time, sigh, our old ‘used to be a chicken house but someone cut it in half and threw a roof on it’ garage is threatening collapse at any moment, so there is a backhoe in my driveway waiting for Monday when it will be demolished. We seem to be in a perpetual state of mess, but given the price of oil et al. the investment seems to be a pretty good idea…
I;m in, I ‘xpect that the thousands of times i read this site a day, $25 is a real bargain.
(back to lurking).
That’s from last year. This year we have a new kind of sunflower. I’m not sure if I like them as much as the Russian Mammoths from last year. These are almost as tall (~10′) but the heads are so big they are tipping over and falling. One took out our beans, although they were done producing beans, it still makes the garden look messy. It’s not quite that cold here yet, I think the low last night was in the 40s.
Exactly. There is a big difference between REAL conservatives and the neocons. When I say neocons, I’m talking about those who support George Bush, Dick Cheney, Sen. Susan Collins, Karl Rove, and others.
REAL conservatives are voting for Barack Obama this year. In Maine, a new group was formed called “Republicans for Barack Obama” (headed by a former Maine GOP leader). These conservatives and liberals are on the same page and have been for a few years now. ;-)
Good to see you also too. The link to Garnet’s site juts leads back to this thread as an FYI, and I’m glad to see the progress. How’s her chances of winning?
Sorry to hear about the skin cancer. And yes the hats do a lot about the person wearing them. That’s built into what I’m working on now.
im about to embark on the same boat, but mine will be slow, prolly one room at a time, but first will be the plumbing, house 50 years old.i finally after one year of saving got a brand new refrigerator…iLOVES it!!!!what a joy
Ah, yes…..a member of the reality-based world. B….but….but….I just laid in a fresh supply of tin foil. *g*
Would that I were! But, still, it’s a beautiful day in the Hudson Valley of New York, with just a hint of fall in the air. Now I must go get coffee and finish wading through Angler–highly recommended, folks.
Morning, Kay…are the Republicans for Obama just plain afraid of McCain/Palin? Is it a ‘anyone but Johnny Mac and Sarah’ thing? Or, is it a “this is what we need right now and Obama, Biden and their people are going to provide it”?
You will be saving POTS of money with a new fridge; the old ones just EAT electricity.
what a fabulous garden….my neighbor down the street(and bestest friend) he is 80…grows incredible tommatos and has hooked me on the YELLOW ones i never had before…everday i have yellow tommato slices on my sandwhiches….he is an amazing farmer…ps i totally love his 2sud horses too…life is so pleasent with great neighbors!
Oh, Rayne — that was so, so hard for me. Hopefully, The Peanut will never remember, but I still feel guilty for missing that first day.
well with ozone layer dissapearing you will do VERY well i expects
Good morning Christie. Thanks for the reminder. $25 is a small amount considering the high value of all the work you all do. Many thanks! I hope to repeat the donation again soon. Maybe an email reminder once a month might be helpful…I get one from the phone company and it’s more effective than a bill in the mail.
well good so it will pay for its VERY own self…”g”
under penalty
dang…stud horses …fingers teh stiff
I got a zojirushi, mainly because it has a sourdough setting which allows me to use a sourdough starter and gives it time to develop a good sponge before it begins the first knead. With my hand issues, it’s tough to do a really good knead by hand for any real length of time — this way I can have the fresh bread I used to be able to make from scratch without having to pay the price for it later with stiff hands. *g*
some of the neighbors beauties
http://bp3.blogger.com/_puwu6D…..G_2632.JPG
I don’t really make them anymore, I had to stop because my hands were swollen from Rhuemotoid Arthritts, which has now gone into remission. Perhaps I’ll start again some day.
I use them as symbols for encouraging creativity in kids.
oooh I lurrv sourdough bread
what a treat that will be!
thank you Barbara — would that the Rethugs could be held to that by refusing to comply;)
oh!! when i send the check ,ill send some local preserves, blackberry allright?
David planted Mexican sunflowers in a couple of the gardens. Bright orange and stunning. The squirrels have planted traditional sunflowers in multiple gardens, and really, they’re quite good a placement. We’ve let ‘em grow this year rather than pulling them out, and they’re a spectacular addition to the carefully chosen plantings. Who knew squirrels are landscapers?!
Weather Channel this morning said Saranac Lake had a record low of 24…
yum, grilled sandwhichs on sourdough are the best.
i m struggling with horrible tendonitis is my wrists…dont give up,and get some lovely softpastels(cheap on ebay)…and sketch your lovely hats…it takes no time and they are GREAT fun
speaking of bread – here’s the “irony of the week” – after I got after my son about drinking sodas because of High fructose corn syrup, he went through the fridge and cabinets and pulled out every box, bottle etc. with that ingredient in it. Our ‘wonderful, healthy’ multigrain bread from the store – yep, they’d used it in there…his trashy white bread – nope.
Hey barbara — how is David doing? How are you? Have been thinking about the two of you…
i absolutely ADORE squirrels
great idea…i feel that one ingredient, has made America overweight, cause its in EVERYTHING and it is empty calories
You can always point the Peanut to me, and I will tell her that you were doing the work we need to save what’s left of this democracy, and that you were there to bear witness for her kids, your grandkids. I don’t know how many times in the last eight years the insights of elders who experienced history first hand have been helpful and in some cases, balm.
Millineryman — here, I’ll try the link again (crossing fingers). She’s outraised her conservative opponent 3-to-1, although some of her larger donors are complaining she hasn’t raised enough (they look for a 100K threshold in these state rep seats). Personally, I think they miss the point that a gay Dem in a strongly red district is kicking her opponent’s butt on money — and that she has a huge posse of help that have helped her make 3+ visits to every door in the district since we kicked off a year ago. That’s a lot of money she didn’t have to raise, all that help.
BTW, folks, the season hasn’t yet ended, but you should begin to think ahead. Is there anybody you should be asking, “Hey, why don’t you run for 2010?” Give them the poke now, plant the seed.
We have a few squirrel-planted sunflowers in our yard this year, and they are the joy of The Peanut’s life at the moment. She adores them. We have such a cheery little girlie. :)
Speaking of which, at some point, I’ll have to see if we have footage of the sit-down I got to do with Sen. Leahy and get it up for you guys.
oh my!,tortie felt really cold today,so i brought her in
she is only this————————— big,ill wait one more year before i let her hibernate
Christy may not feel comfortable asking for money, but I’ve gotten good at it. I’ve seen a few “I’m in” posts, I hope most of us are just lurking, chipping in, and not putting anything up. The folks here at the Lake have gotten all of us through rough times as well as helped celebrate the good. Let’s make this a great day by chipping in!
Christy and Pups,
The Breast Cancer Site is trying to reach 10 Million clicks for September in order to have 100 more free mammograms paid for, so please help and click each day.
They are part of The Hunger Site, along with Child Health, Literacy, Rainforest, and Animal Rescue. Just follow the instructions as you move along the tabs at the top of their pages and by clicking once a day at each tab, you can do much good for many people.
Thank You.
they’ve planted many an acorn *s*
They are all over the chestnut tree all ready, looking for the earlies. It’s a race to outcompete those gray grabbers.
It’s obviously the cheap sweetener of choice for food processors. Here’s another crazy choice for it: Raisin Bran. I am determined to get all of that stuff out of the house. My one problem is going to be ketchup, though I have heard that I will be able to find ‘kosher for Passover’ ketchup (and probably a lot of other condiments and other products too, without it in the spring and I plan to stock up. But the bread thing and the bran cereal thing just get my goat because we are eating those for health reasons – putting HFCS in them makes no sense at all.
Woohoo!! a sit-down with Leahy!! now that’s what I’m talking about!!
I’m finally about 95 percent over really bad tendonitis in the wrist. The cure proved to be a slew-ball mouse. It gradually got better and I can finally use my hand almost normally.
Some parts of the country you can find a very tasty bread that has a sourdough consistency but a quite unique taste. Salt Rising Bread. Joy Of Cooking has a recipe for it but it’s not easily found in most areas. Makes a great tasting toast though.
noonan – this is not only an information source, it IS a community. Some of us get to meet one another; a lot of us only have the electronic hugs and face to face. I did a monthly subscription – it makes sense for me – Even at $10 a month, that is less than coffee money these days and will mean a lot. We get the best quality news, information and analysis here – my local paper is worthless and the MSM is just as bad.
clicked
Thanks Rayne, that link works. I wish her the best. And what better way to reach the voters then a visit and to GOTV on election day.
A few $$ headed your way.
Gonna hit the road in a little while here to go be with my dad as, today, we celebrate the family business, lumber and hardware, being in business for 100 years. Yup, my great-great grandfather came out of a local orphanage and started the business in 1908.
Dad is 78 years old now, has lost quite a bit to Alzheimer’s, but how he managed to keep that small company alive while competing with the ‘big boxes’ is beyond me. (and yes, I am a lawyer – because I *suck* at his business *g*). He was a friggin’ genius, I don’t know how he kept it afloat, but he did. We have two locations now, having had to close one 3 years ago.
Lowe’s and/or Home Depot may take us out eventually, but they haven’t pulled it off yet.
For me, today is *his* day.
its in my LEFT wrist….im going to get a shot
oo thanks!
CONGRATULATIONS …..you da bestist
Happy Lumberversary and hugs for dadjayt
ill get ya the link but organic ketchup has 3x the lycopene as regular
who wants an EYEOPENER?

25 Quatloos to the Ladies of the Lake. xoxo
That is so great, jayt! Enjoy the day — and good on your dad. Send him a big smooch from me.
Balrog! How’s the wee balrog doing?
I cannot believe how much it hurts…burning pokerlike
Okay. I guess you don’t do any repetititve motion with the left hand. I got the shot also. It helped some, for a brief period. I was about to decide to have the operation of slitting the tendon sheath, when my wife insisted I try to reduce the repetitive motion. To my surprise, it worked. Still, according to the ortho-doc, the operation is not bad and incurs no lingering disability. Anyway, I hadn’t appreciated how painful and debilitating tendonitis was. You have my full sympathy.
I’ll do that – and give proper attribution of course. *g*
Thanks all – out now – back tonight.
heres the link
http://www.naturalnews.com/003374.html
oooo, great
I had the operation done on my right hand – I had no use of it whatsoever and was frankly dangerous with thinks like pots, pans and lifting up my son(who was a year old at the time). I can tell you that your doctor is right – I have probably 95% use of my hand and if I get any twinges, I just back off and it goes nicely away.
i fell on my right wrist,so that was operated on..took 6 month recovery, but now i have dequervains in my left…i think fromCIPRO…anyway…6 more months …yukko
Thanks! I have them bookmarked and click through all six sites every morning for my “Once A Day, I Know I Can Do Something Good For People” feeling.
But it’s especially good news for me as my sister had her mammogram this week and is five years survivor.
i guess my DOC did a fabulous job,but the rehab was quite an ordeal
Hey, Christy! Thanks for asking. We’re having a rough time. I’m willing to share some details, but don’t want to hijack this wonderful Saturday morning oasis. (Wow! What a terrible metaphor mix that was!)
Yes. Even accidently tapping my thumb or forefinger the wrong way sent me to my knees. Even the skin on the outside of my wrist and had burned continuously, like a bad sunburn, and was hot to the touch. I’ll get the operation if it recurs.
Darlin’, I’ll send you a truckload! *g*
So sorry, hon — big hugs. I remember the tough days of Jane’s chemo and my mom’s rough times with her radiation. So my sympathies and then some for you — and very gentle hugs for David.
hahahahhahhahaahaha
Is firedoglake a nonprofit organization? I realize it’s not making money now. But I’ve never understood if this is something Jane owns and could profit from one day or if that’s out of the question. I’ve given money before to firedoglake, but would love some transparency on this, even if it’s just to gauge the amounts I’m giving, thanks.
btw, gang, Mr. ReddHedd bought me a wonderful book called “The Spice Merchant’s Daughter.” It’s full of recipes from a woman who was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur whose mother was a spice merchant. But it’s the writing that evokes amazing images along with the yummy recipes. It is such an escapist read for foodies — thought some folks here might like it…
Michelle Obama is going to be on Paula’s Party tonight on the Food Network…
Want to know the way to a man’s heart? Try seafood gumbo – it worked for Michelle Obama!
“It was an impressive first attempt … I must have really been in love,” Michelle Obama told Paula Deen of her attempt to make seafood gumbo – including lobster, shrimp and mussels! – on an early date with future husband Barack Obama. “No, I haven’t cooked it since.”
“It was so good that once was enough,” Deen responded. The wife of the Democratic nominee for President appears on Deen’s Food Network show, Paula’s Party, on Sept. 20, and the host can attest it was more than her cooking that did the trick with the Senator.
“She was everything I thought she would be: Smart, great sense of humor and loves to talk about family,” Deen told PEOPLE of meeting Mrs. Obama.
The pair prepared fried shrimp for Deen’s show and Deen said, “I can tell she spends time in the kitchen – she was very relaxed when we cooked. And that lady is a good eater.”
Not that it shows. “Did I tell you she is in the best shape ever? Everyone was staring at her amazing arms!” said Deen.
Should Obama win in November, PEOPLE asked Deen what she would cook for them. “Well, I know that Senator Obama loves his chili. And I promised that I would make them my fried chicken if they move into the White House. Boy would that be fun!”
It’s not a non-profit — we wouldn’t qualify as a 501(c)(3) or (4), I don’t think, although the PAC work we’ve tried to set up is completely separate and apart and follows the guidelines for the FEC for that sort of thing. But those budgetary numbers are separate and apart by law, and the funds do not co-mingle in any way.
The site donations go for server hamster chow, tech support, and the bazillion other places money goes to keep things running, including travel expenses for the Denver and Minneapolis trips and other stuff that will be upcoming.
Oh, and speaking of upcoming stuff, I’m going to be on with Rachel Maddow on her Air America show next week — I’ll post details as soon as I firm up day and time. It’s likely Tuesday afternoon, but it’s not firm yet — thought folks would want a heads up…
Barbara – we’re here for you. Whatever we can do..just let us know.
Ooooh — do you have a link for that?
YESSSSS!!!! Rachel..great stuff.
Thanks, Christy.
off to the farmers market…bye all
Just yesterday I was thinking how cool being a spice merchant would be. I wanted some smoked paprika and the closest spice merchants to me are in Philly. I drifted off in day dream about opening a spice store, traveling the world to source supplies, ahhh such a romantic notion.
You are more than welcome — thanks for caring enough to ask. :)
I had a wonderful time last night-oh boy- a virtual grand old party. I went to the all the elephants favorite watering holes. The places where for over 3 decades I have been lectured about the glories of the free market, admonished about welfare queens and heard cries for getting government off their backs. Well, last night I rubbed their trunks in their pachyderm shit. And, given what has transpired over the last week, they had to take it. This old Democratic jackass had the old political mastodons on the dead run. Oh, it was glorious!
Leaving each watering hole I said, “‘My tusked friends’, this year vote Democrat and maybe, if your lucky, you might get to continue living like Republicans.”
In honor of these wounded elephants I will make a nice contribution today to FDL.
I buy a lot of my spices from Penzeys. Their stuff is very fresh — I order it online and it gets shipped to me directly, and it’s wonderful.
Christy,
Since we’re sort of rambling, I’ve been surprised by the apparent lack of any apparent mechanism for enforcing subpoena’s. As a citizen/layman, I would have taken a subpoena very seriously. Is there any repercussion for Alaska’s “First Drone” blowing of his subpoena?
OMG — that should have come with a spew warning. Sounds like you had a grand old time. *g*
Any luck on Paypal?
I believe there will be an enforcement filing at some point — it’s what usually happens. They’ll try and stall the hearing on “unavailability” grounds, the judge will be courteous to start with and try to get the parties to come to terms, which they won’t — and then I’d expect the hammer to be brought down at some point and the subpoena enforced outright. Most local judges will only put up with so much grandstanding before they let you have it.
Thanks for the link and recommendation.
Not yet — we’re working on it. I can’t fix it on my own — that’s what you guys get with a techno-challenged person at the helm early on Saturdays. *G*

Should be a link to Weerog but it’s breaking.
What is the email addy, even if we can;t launch id directly we should be able to log in and send it that way.
What kinda kink you talkin bout?
Jonathan Alter (whom I like) was amusing last night on Rachel Maddow. He appeared actually bewildered, like he couldn’t quite get his mind around the fact that all of the life-long market economy people had, in one day, become socialists.
ya gotta spice it up sometimes *g
Thanks. It was starting to bring back memories of when my sons, as teenagers, would simply throw away traffic tickets.
Last night with a snoot full I suddenly started calling them ‘Commie Capitalists.’
whatever gets you through the nite!
and the ‘let you have it’ is…a warrant for arrest is sworn out and deputies are sent out to pick the subpoena’d person up, right?
Thanks Christy!
The flowers, the beautiful music, fresh baked bread and hot coffee, birds at the feeders
All these things remind me that there is more to life than just politics
I think I’ll put the laptop down and go enjoy !
Ps The check is in the mail!
I can’t speak for FDL, but I can tell you that hosting alone must cost much, much more than $500/month; we’re talking about a site whose readership can rival the New York Times depending on the day.
Every time one of the team is on the road, on site, or doing a media appearance, it’s a few hundred bucks for travel and more if accommodations are necessary (god knows if you can only get the last flight, you have to stay over, and generally two-weeks advance booking savings aren’t available).
There’s also coding stuff that costs $$; granted the team here can call up a lot of resources and have on the cheap or donated, but there are times when you must pay $$ to get it done, and that’s not cheap. (The guys I think are the best and fastest are also making 6-figures, booked up 12 hours a day — takes money to get their attention and time).
AND THE ELECTION…if you check this site’s traffic, they had a big spike yesterday, and I don’t remember hearing any complaints about service. That same level of service must be available when the election comes, and you know this place will be flooded with traffic. It costs money to buy additional hosting and support that can scale up rapidly, and arrangements have to be made in advance. At least that’s what I think, based on my experience as an IT geek and a managing editor of another website.
Seems entirely reasonable to me to ask for donations now, given what we’ll be expecting of these folks and their infrastructure during the next 46 days.
It’s crunch time, Firepups.
it was typo i meant link.
aw dude, it was a joke
The check will have to wait until Monday. By then I will have convinced enough well dressed Republicans that it only takes a couple of dollars to make me disappear, and I will have collected $25. My friends and I first started doing that in college, while we were on scholarships and grants, as a social experiment. I understand it means I am going to hell or something, but at least I had fun on the way. Also, I can support my favorite causes with no out of pocket expense (and probably keep a couple of poor alcoholics from getting the money and thereby further destroying their fragile cirrhosis damaged livers).
Note: When anybody asks me for spare change on the street I almost always give them what I’ve got, so I don’t feel very guilty about it.

Mornin’ All !
Christy will send ya somethin’ after shift tomorrow :D
The election is exactly why we beefed up in advance rather than waiting for a crash. We’ve been trying to plan ahead as much as possible…
{{{{barbara and david}}}}
Am working on getting the correct answer on that, since that appears to be part of what the problem was on the initial link…
Rayne, I know these things cost money. I was curious if Jane ever hoped to recoup those costs or if this is simply not a business. In one case, they’d be start-up costs; in the other, they wouldn’t. The last estimate I saw said huffingtonpost.com was worth something like two hundred million dollars, so there is some grey area here. In the meantime, I’ll keep donating.
Last night watching our Civic theater do “Honky Tonk Angels” made me wonder what you at FDL or Tina Fey could do with “Trashy Women.”
Spice Merchant’s Daughter…putting on my list. Will check the local libraries’ online catalog [sure and it’s swell to live on the cusp of two states and two regional library systems]…and request if needed. Lotsa foodies in Fargo.
Please look at this ad. This is the one. It is the best I have seen. Really!

Enjoy your day everyone.
Yeah, she seemed to kinda cut him off (understandable time constraints) and he was still sitting there with that “WTF? happened to my money” look on his face. Rather a hoot.
despite the financial hardships to come from this week, am taking perverse pleasure in watching all the Cheerleaders for this catastrophe trampling each other as they run for the exits -

Own Your Failures !
Good morning Christy et al.
I’m happy to give—you know that. I do so pretty much whenever asked. But I have to say that for me personally, FDL is getting more razzledazzle than I want to keep up with. I’m finding myself spending less and less time here and now it’s by choice, not just because of my workload. I’m happy for your success and all, just not feeling as connected as when we could actually keep a conversation going for a while before being urged to move on. JMHO. YMMV.
HuffPo is not analogous to where we are — not even close. And I meant that in a “jeebus, what we could do with $20 million bucks, holy cow!” sort of way.
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I just got back from the dump/recycling.
Actually, I would say REAL conservatives see that their party is different today and doesn’t represent them anymore. They see Barack Obama as SANITY in a chaotic America and feel confident in throwing their support behind him and Biden.
Lots of Americans are feeling the same way and this is why I’m personally not putting much credit in the polls right now. If Johnny McTeleprompter was feeling confident about winning, then he would have put Romney in as VP. Putting Palin in was a desperate move on the part of McCain and the neocons and REAL conservatives knew it in an instant.
Good Morning all,
The $$ is in the tooobz
Today I have committed to canvassing for Obama at least as long as the ole leg holds out.
Does anyone have an idea as to who is taking care Palin and the first dudes brood while they are on the trail?
Most excellent use of a Friday evening…….please feel free to throw a few more spears for all of us. *g*
To the tune of Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald:
“Does anyone know where the invisible hand goes
When stock sales of September come crashing?
McCain it would seem,
fears losing his dream,
and his speeches for reason are thrashing.”
Oh well, maybe someone more like Gordon Lightfoot will pick it up.
Mornin’ Gal, always a pleasure to see your comments – hope all are well and thriving at chez Rayne
been wondering if a certain Michigander firedog was affiliated with the paper that broke the ‘Michigan caging’ story :D
Christy, you might want to check out Ed Woods’s sourdough website. His Russian starter is supposed to be good for bread machines, because it works fast.
On another note: Over at Making Light, Teresa has a thread about McCain and Palin that’s worth reading and passing along. Things the corprat media hasn’t figured out yet, mostly, and should have, because they’re really obvious when you stop to think.
Did everyone see the report of the plane crash in South Carolina this morning that resulted in 4 people dead and former Blink 182 drummer critically injured along with DJ Am? Oh boy. It gives me the chills.
Breaking news ; explosion @ Marriot in Islamabad, Pakistan. So far 8 dead, part of hotel has collapsed & people trapped
Sounds like something she’d palin off to the Lieutenant Governor
Some pollsters don’t include cellphones in their polls; others do, which Per Nate Silver of fivethirtyeight.com, yields a 2-point shift in Obama’s favor:
Note that “win percentage” means likelihood of winning, not percentage of popular vote. Small advantages in projected popular vote cause huge advantages in “win percentage” and “projected electoral vote.”
Good Morning everyone. I’m in for a few bucks.
Back to the subpoena question, isn’t refusing to obey a subpoena a crime all by itself? Obviously IANAL.
New Thread
Beautiful. A work of true genius. Absolutely the best political ad I’ve seen.
Yes. See glen greenwald from yesterday.
No, but I’ll go there. Thanks
Bernie Sanders smacks around the neocons & their bailout:

Another guy who is offering some sanity in the chaotic America Bush & Cheney have created!
I like it. ;-)
I hear ya RevDeb, and the community is a huge part of the effectiveness of the site.
and you know how committed I have been to it in the past.
Oh well. Gotta do stuff and finish my sermon for tommorrow.
I just read Sen. Sanders article, and it is excellent!
Highly recommend!
Of particular note is the following:
He could not be more correct.
Do not miss this ad! I had to play it over and over just to make sure I was hearing McCain say such devastating things about himself, such as “Money buys access to my office!”
Jaw dropping stuff! Out of his own mouth!
They should run this ad nationwide, nonstop from now to Nov. 4th.
And isn’t it nice to read someone saying the middle class should be first and foremost when it comes to a ‘bailout’? I think so. ;-)
Excellent, Kay. Thank you.
You are certainly welcome. Mr. Grant in Houston of my blog is the one who posted the article. As you know, we lefty bloggers can’t keep articles like this to ourselves! We have to share. ;-)
Morning Christy.
Been out of touch for awhile here. I hadn’t heard you actually got the breadmaker. Terrific! I can smell the bread from here. *reaches for slice*
Actually I still like the old fashioned way of breadmaking, when I can make time. Helps get my boosh-generated frustrations out to slap and pound the dough around, heh.
We’ll donate when we can, but these are unsettling times. Feels weird to have our house all paid off, virtually no debt, and yet we’re scared witless over whether we’ll make it into our retirement cottage. Once we’re over the threshold, I think we’ll feel better.
Say, anyone out there want a modest but efficient and very comfortable, 3-bedroom house on a mini-nature-preserve we’ve slowly and gently crafted and protected for the past 35 yrs? Gorgeous, free entertainment from critters galore who, at this point, are more tame than most people’s human neighbors. Extra perks: nice veggie garden plot, blueberries and black raspberries and crabapples and pears, hazelnuts, hickory. Wildflowers and butterflies galore. Andersen windows throughout for a cozy but full view of the woods. Screened porch. Herb garden. Full basement. 2 big chest freezers.
Oh yeah. Humungous beautiful fireplace, and steady supply of firewood, free. BTW, top notch public school system comes with the deal.
Obama sign out front and “Friends for Peace” sign at the door.
And of COURSE the place is fully “wired”. How you think I got here to the Lake, eh? *g*
Anyone? Available June ‘09, assuming junior doesn’t bring on the apocalypsogremlins in the meantime.
P. E. A. C. E.
Late but Christy I just chipped in. Wish it could be more but I gave because the Lake has provided me with endless hours of news and discussion about the subjects that mean the most to me. Our country and keeping politicians honest and working for the good od all the people of this great country. Keep up the fantastic work. The changes lately have been difficult but I know the back room crew WILL get everything running smoothly as soon as they can. Thanks for all you do Christy, Jane, Suz, ES and everyone one else who contributes to make this the very best place on the WEB!!
Hi, Adie – if you read this…I can’t think of anything more perfect – two kinds of berries bushes?? Ahhhh.I’ll take it!
Would that I could. Hope you have some time before you really have to sell; not the best time to be a seller. I’m in (a rental in) the most desirable part of my city, and instead of the usual 3 month “supply” of houses for sale, there’s an 11-month “supply.” And we constantly hear that our real estate market is much better off than most cities.
Wish you luck.
In for $50…if I can afford almost $5 for coffee and a pastry every day, I sure as hell can afford this.
Wish I had a million to give you guys.
cbl2 — Um, I’m very familiar with it… ;-)

Crikey, even ICanHasCheezburger.com is in the Top 10 Blogs.
This should give you some idea how rarefied the air is in Arianna’s blog-neighborhood, or how out of skew valuation is ifICanHasCheezburger.com can beat FDL’s family in ranking.
In for $50. I would have to read this right after I donated a chunk of change to Obama, but I’ll do whatever it takes to contribute here.
Please, don’t feel uncomfortable about “talking about money.” Bring it right up front with regular frequency, and let our generosity, of whatever amount, save you from those days close to the brink.
