Opposition to a California ballot measure to ban same-sex marriage is mounting following Attorney General Jerry Brown’s move to change the language on the initiative, according to a Field Poll released today.
The poll found that just 38 percent of likely voters support the measure, while 55 percent intend to vote no. That compares with 42 percent in support and 51 percent opposed in July.
Brown amended the Proposition 8 summary language after the state Supreme Court’s decision on May 15 to overturn California’s previous ban on same-sex marriage.
Californians appear unlikely to vote to take away rights, even though they were more evenly divided on limiting marriage to a union between one man and one woman.
The pollsters found the amended language played a role in that growing opposition, especially among the 30 percent of likely voters interviewed who had never heard of Prop. 8.
Those voters were much more likely to oppose the measure when read Brown’s wording (58 percent against it and 30 percent for it) than those in the same category who were read the old version of Prop. 8 (42 percent against and 37 percent for it), according to the Field Poll.
Take that, haters. More on No On 8 here.

Hi, Teddy. Jerry has turned out to be a very good guy – not just Gov. Moonbeam. Knew him years ago and liked him then. Like him even more now.
Hey, Teddy.
excellent news for love !!!
Sounds good.
Good for Brown. I am a strong Constitutionalist and marriage equality seems to me a clear 14th Amendment “equal protection of the laws” case
early OT – sorry:
St. Paul dropping all misdemeanor charges for journalists arrested during RNC

civil suits may now commence. Loose the hounds!
hello ted.
we have one of these in FL in Nov. It’ll get a majority but right now it’s a little short of 60% needed. it’s a simple majority in CA.
not to go o/t so soon, but what if anything is up with the recall you told us about a while back?
i would think so too. i’m from NJ and their supreme court said gays in civil unions are entitled to all the same rights as married people. they just can’t get married. that surprised me the NJ court couldn’t take that final step and say-like you and I do-that marriage is a right for all people. it’s usually considered a pretty progressive court
I don’t mean to dismiss what Brown did here, but this is what his job is. My understanding is that Prop 8 first got enough signatures to be on the ballot BEFORE the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage. The Supreme Court ruling therefore changed the effect of the ballot proposal–before, it would have prevented gays from doing something we couldn’t do anyway, but now it takes away a right that the Supreme Court ruled that we have. (And that the legislature has voted to give us, but that the governor has vetoed.) It is the California AG’s job to tell people, in plain language, what a ballot proposal will do, and that’s exactly what he’s done here.
(I think he’s also required to provide an estimate of how much any proposal will cost the state, so the ballot measure’s language will also include something about the millions of dollars California will lose if the gay marriage business stays in New England.)
Don’t know why you phrased it the way you did. He’s always been a Good Guy. I’m sure you’re aware of the details.
Request to Teddy: Any chance I can get you to change the photo? The HRC logo pisses me off. They’re still on my shit list for supporting Joe Lieberman.
good for jerry brown. i know he’s been controversial over the years, but i’ve always appreciated hus passion for public service. i find myself in violent agreement with him on most issues.
OT: well, we’ve run out of gas here in nashville. i haven’t seen lines like these (for the few stations left who weren’t “nozzle-bagged” at every pump) since the 70’s. i guess i’ll spend the weekend at home and save the half-tank i have in case of emergency.
maybe the cash-drunk oil companies will get the next tax-payer bail out? lawd knows, everyone but us needs our money these days.
If I remember correctly, Corzine pushed for civil unions at first so that gay marriage wouldn’t be used as wedge issue in the presidential race this year. Give it another year or so and I believe you will see gay marriage in NJ.
Hopefully they will get the bill before Corzine so he can sign it in the event he’s only around for one term.
Looking good, Teddy! Good news for you and your better half and Ellen, eh? ;-)
Sorry, Teddy, this is OT, but Keith just quoted GWB as saying “Anyone engaging in illegal financial transactions will be caught and persecuted.” Just thought y’all should know about this Bushism.
i think the signatures were collected after, and in response to, the court ruling. perhaps before the “scheduled” allowance of marriage certificates being issued within the state?
i’ve been wrong once before, i suppose i might have the timeline off a smidge. (-;
yes, right after he prosecutes those involved in outing Valerie Plame to the fullest extent of the law./s
Didn’t Ellen already marry her lover? Thought I saw photos somewhere.
Is there a reason there are so many early OT’s on this post? C’mon…..
YEA for Brown…. now for the AZ same ballot measure to define marriage between a man and a woman…. now the Mormon’s may be working against this one….. it clearly states in the ballot measure….. Marriage will be defined between ONE man and ONE woman….. Ya know Colorado City is in AZ…
Aargh! Vets for Freedom(an Repug Astroturf org) just aired an ad on the success of the Surge… What a coinky-doink that I just posted a factual ‘Surge’ post…
in today’s los angeles times is a photo that for me encapsulates what this fight is about: a victim in last week’s horrendous train wreck, spree desha, was a l.a. police officer. turns out her life partner, laura gerritsen, is also an officer. yesterday was the funeral. here is a photo of laura saying good-bye:

Nice to know that there are some states where homophobia isn’t a competitive game of one-up-manship.
like it is here, for example.
Exactly, demi!
Every commercial break on KO and Rachel has these running here in AZ….. Mute works for me….
I have always said that, aside from the failure part, the surge was a great success.

Sorry, I don’t know how to link.
you must be watching MSNBC? It’s all about the economy now and to bring up the war (with its price tag) is not the best thing
That’s a heart breaking photo. Looks like a Pulitzer to me.
Have you added it to your list…? ;-)

GAO Chief Testifies Surge Failed To Achieve Most Of The Benchmarks (Again!)
But, but I saw the ad. General Petraeus, his own omniscient and inerrant self, said that the goals of the Surge had largely been met ( well, the military goals anyway).
“Course, there weren’t any specifics or statistics, because those would just be, you know, confusing.
actually, there is an even more heartbreaking photo in the print edition. i’m appalled it isn’t online.
here is a link to the article itself:

“When it was Gerritsen’s turn to speak to the mourners gathered in the cathedral — a group that included several City Council members, City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo, firefighters, California Highway Patrol officers and family and friends — her voice was soft as she began.
“She had the kindest eyes I’ve ever looked into,” Gerritsen said. “She had wisdom far beyond her years. . . . I cherished every moment we spent together, and I have no regrets about the time we did have.”
Those pesky little things like facts, just seem to constantly trip ‘em up, for some strange reason or other…! ;-)
Jerry’s been doing things like this ever since I can remember. Subtle tweaks to the system, and sometimes sledgehammers to the system, to make this world a better place. A true patriot like his father.
One of my earliest memories as a child was Jerry patting me on the head at some campaign event when he was governor. Years later, my first exposure to national politics was running the campus campaign office for Brown in 1992 against Bill Clinton (we won our city in a landslide). We were saying the exact same things about the Clintons and the DLC as we are today.
The “moonbeam” thing was a creation of the Noize Machine in order to shut down a true Liberal who could connect with the middle class. That always freaks BigMoney out because the know the majority of the public would flock to Liberal candidates and policies if they heard the truth instead of propaganda.
Jerry and many others in the 70s were starting the “Green Revolution” that’s so popular today even with charlatans like T. Booger Pickit. Too bad the electorate allowed themselves to be swayed into the “Me Generation” instead of being the “Green Generation.” Imagine how strong our economy and environment would be right now had the past 30 years been spent developing Green technologies and mentalities in the country.
Just another case of many where Liberal thought like Jerry Brown’s was correct.
My actual entry on the Iraq war item 4 is embarrassingly short. I figured it was either that or write a book. At 245, I discuss the failure to meet benchmarks but I never wrote an entry on what the initial thinking was behind the surge, what its goals were, and how the political and military realities never measured up to them.
I’m surprised. Petraeus has never had a problem making up statistics and graphs in the past.
I appreciate the examples. I’m old enough to remember when he was gov, but as an other coaster, never paid much attention.
Wasn’t it Lieberman who introduced that resolution?
Found it…. Surge
It is Graham & Lieberman…..
Oh that mother! I have tears. Life is hard enough. And then to have the courage to live the life style that suits you, against all odds. And then to be taken out too soon because some stupid person was text messaging? The world is just too difficult right now.
I once attended a funeral for a close friend from work who was gay. The only reason I mention that she was gay is that this woman’s mother and entire family never recognized her life partner – and these women were together for over 30 years. At the end, when we filed up to give the family our respects, the partner was standing far away from the family. We were friends too and I just held her and rocked her for a really long time. It was the most poignant part of the evening for me.
If you follow some of my links that I utilized and the fact that the bench marks were drafted by the WH as the objective of the Surge, or rather, “The New Way Forward” and implemented by congress in the bill budgeting it, it is made clearer… Give me a holler at M&C if you want to clarify it…!
PS, I live about 10 miles from Chatsworth, just over the hill from where this police woman lived. I can see the Chatsworth hills from my yard. So, it just feels deeper, being a closer community type loss.

KO sending $3700 to Alaska special olympics at $100 per Palin & her campaign lies in the past 2 weeks.

Thanks, I was unaware Christoff had testified recently on benchmarks and the surge.
the photographs are heartbreaking, for everyone in Officer DeShea’s family. i can’t help but wonder though … would her partner have received the flag from the casket as a rememberance token had they been able to fully take part in the rights afforded married partners?
thank you for the link. it clearly brings some of the issues we are having to fight for related to same sex marriage into focus.
(actually, Petraeus said the MILITARY goals had been met. of course, we all know military goals were not the primary goals of the surge … they were meant as a stop gap, to buy time for the political will to gel.)
Damn, you’re good kala! Can’t argue the military objective of lowered violence levels… However fragile they might be…! 8-)
Well I hope this means I can stop working so hard on this campaign. Oh wait, it’s not Nov 5 yet. But thank you Jerry Brown. I got married two weeks ago after 19 years together. Thanks Teddy for highlighting this.
Thanks…a real novice here…can you explain highlight your url?

What the world needs now is love sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of.
What the world needs now is love sweet love,
no not just for some but for everyone.
Lord we don’t need another mountain,
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb,
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross
Enough to last until the end of time.
Lord we don’t need another meadow,
there are corn fields and wheat fields enough to grow,
there are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine,
oh listen Lord, if you want to know
What the world needs now is love sweet love….
