John McCain, George Bush, truly a legacy worth embracing:
Pressure is building on the pristine "AAA" rating of the United States after a federal bailout of American International Group Inc, the chairman of Standard & Poor’s sovereign ratings committee said on Wednesday.
The $85 billion bailout of AIG on Tuesday by the U.S. Federal Reserve "has weakened the fiscal profile of the United States," S&P’s John Chambers told Reuters in an interview.
"Lack of a pro-active stance could have resulted in further financial stress and put pressure on the U.S. triple-A rating," Chambers said. "There’s no God-given gift of a ‘AAA’ rating, and the U.S. has to earn it like everyone else."
There could not be a more damning statement on the policies these two clowns have deregulated us into.
Heckuva job, boys.

ZED!!! Zed is dead…long live Zed!
Per MSNBC -
bush cancels fund-raising trips to Florida and Alabama to huddle with economic advisors.
Iirc, tweety made some comments yesterday about “Where’s bush?” and “Looks like another Katrina.” while the financial world is imploding; apparently someone in the white house got the message.
Where’s Cheney?
Plotting the next attack?
Good morning and thanks for the post, Attaturk.
Norske,
Can you even begin to imagine the outcry from the right if it were a Dem Pres running around nationalizing companies? Not just any old companies. The keepers of the cash. The movers and shakers at the heart of global finance. Unchecked for 7 + years Hugo Bush has destroyed what had been the most powerful manufacturing machine in the history of mankind. A wealth machine that, in capable hands, benefited ALL Americans but under the retched watch of bush and cheney enriched only those that have now, ultimately and finally, driven the fucking thing off a cliff. It will take more than a generation to undo the hideous, all encompassing failures of policies the more rational of us knew to be not just wrong, but stupid.
My heart is sick and at 53 my retirement in jeopardy. A lifetime of laser focused dedication to the business of prosperity for not just my family but the Greater Good lies now in ruins. Made a mockery by a frat boy idiot and a greedy maniac hell bent on throwin a nuke at somebody. Anybody.
Let them go down now as Socialists. But please let them go down. Quickly. This day, I do despair.
I am off to my job to earn half of what I did 8 yrs. ago to get medical insurance that cost 4 times as much as it did then and try and move all that’s left of our meager holdings into the mattress. Fuck me.
apropos of nothing: fork!
Citizen oldnslow:
I feel yer pain, I’m waitin fer my wife ta go in 3 years, she woulda been able ta retire two years ago but they pulled the early retirement package and changed insurance so she’s gotta wait 3 more years. I’m goin out on Social Security and an annuity and 403B but my wife’s got her teachers retirement and a trust from her two deceased parents that so far hasn’t been hit…but if we had a national health insurance plan we’d both be in retirement.
As for the larcenous bastards that have planned this little transfer of wealth and political power, do NOT call them “socialists” ‘cuz they are NATIONAL socialists (read NAZI)…they privatize the profits and nationalize the debts and outsource the debt so that it will take confiscatory taxation ta get the revenue ta feed the people and rebuild the economy.
What’s gunna be necessary is a new new deal but the bastards learned from 1932-33 and ran a debt up and sold it off to foriegn governments so Obama’s gunna hafta do some real dosi-do ta get the revenue ta pay for the restructurin’ that’s comin…I’m thinkin that nationalizin about 400 family trusts would do it.
Looks like scar has all the reich wingers on this morning. Let’s see if we can pin the “Obama ads: all negative; all the time” tale [sic] on the donkey. :-(

one might think the big money finally gets it, that the republicans have been the ruin of them, that they need the democrats rebuilding the middle class
Citizen perris:
“One might think the big money finally gets it, that the republicans have been the ruin of them, that they need the democrats rebuilding the middle class.”
The people that have brought us this little transfer of wealth are the very same folks who brought us the last one…and their intention then as it is today was to bankrupt the national economy, concentrate the welath and return to the ante bellum social structure and economic relationships. It didn’t work last time ‘cuz they didn’t count on FDR and they hadn’t run up enough debt and their cash was jest hangin out there for FDR ta tax and redistribute while restructurin the bankin and securities system. What we have had since 1981 is a relentless assault on all those New Deal structures, freein up the mortgage and securities industry and usin’ the treasury ta transfer wealth from the people to the families. Today though, the Bush family has learned from Prescot Bush that in order to completely destroy the free economy and free labor they had ta not only steal the cash but drive the debt into foriegn hands so it would be impossible ta institute New Deal like changes without defaulting on the debt and taxin’ income that isn’t there anymore.
We are righteously and truly fucked today and nobody even unzipped their pants this time!
NO-O-O-O!!
[Ahem] Using the Lehman collapse as text, Felix Salmon explains some of what could go wrong when a large house is allowed to fail: settlement risk.
Seeing as how we don’t really want to see any of those things come about, it makes a strong case for regulating, you know, in advance.
It may, perhaps, be a ghoulish thing to say but, Thank Dog! this Wall Street melt-down didn’t happen *after* 4 November. Wouldn’t matter who wins…….the reich wingers would be screaming, “It’s all the Dems’ fault!”
Not that they won’t (or aren’t already), but it sure does make the “spin” setting a little less effective. Guess there’s always a silver lining in the washing machine. :-)
Southern Dragon alert????
Is it my imagination or have there been a hell of a lot more financial ads on the idjit box this week?
Has the Dragon gone to ground? Wasn’t somebody gonna try to get in touch with him yesterday?
P.S. All you Firepup Patriots go back and read Naomi Klein’s “Crisis Capitalism” to get the blueprint of how Greenspan, Friedman and the 400 families set up this collapse to bring the political system down with the economy.
Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, the Swiss Confederation, the United Kingdom — and then the United States of America.
I guess their company is too rich for the likes of us. They all sound like furriners, anyway.
Market-based risk assessment says there’s an 0.26% chance a Republican United States will welch on its most basic promises and obligations. The market is far too optimistic.
Twiced, negative contact.
Roger, the shit is coming down, I think I’ll read a book!
John disses Spain!
“Would you be willing to meet with the head of our government, Mr. Zapatero?” the questioner asked, in an exchange now being reported by several Spanish outlets.
McCain proceeded to launch into what appeared to be a boilerplate declaration about Mexico and Latin America — but not Spain — pressing the need to stand up to world leaders who want to harm America.

Where’s the Dragonman…what’ve I missed since my computer has been havin seizures for the last week?
Didja read my response to ya last week about the Labor Day march…it was tremendous and I am proud ta say I got some kids in this generation that aren’t gunna take any shit from the bastards.

Good morning, pups. It’s Collins, Cohen and Kristof this morning. Ms. Collins gives us “The McCain of the Week,” and says that at a rally in Ohio, Senator John McCain morphed into a new persona — a raging populist. If he is going to keep changing into new people, he should send out notices. Mr. Cohen says “The King is Dead,” and has a question: Why do freshmen bursting to change the world morph into investment bankers? It’s time for young minds to rediscover the public sphere. Mr. Kristof’s column is titled “Need a Job? $17,000 an Hour. No Success Required.” He says he’s delighted to announce that Richard Fuld, the longtime chief of Lehman Brothers, is winner of his annual award for corporate rapacity and poor corporate governance. He’s pissed…

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got apple and walnut muffins that just came out of the oven. I’m pretty much speechless this morning, but I can quote Atrios: “Wheeeeeeeeee.” Do you have to have some sort of special permit to sell pencils on the street corner? Have a great day.
It’s OK we have been saved.
Do you have to have some sort of special permit to sell pencils on the street corner?
You’ll need to check with DHS for an answer on that one.
if they are sharpened, you’ll need a license.
“We’re from DHS and we’re here to take your pencils.”
you could almost feel sorry for him
TBogg’s ’supposedly “that must have been fun!” thing that I’ll never watch again’
Greta Van Tucksteren interviews Snowbilly Todd
Oh, jeez…. You can’t sell them sharpened, fer gawd’s sake. I don’t have a license to sell weapons. Don’t they confiscate sharpened pencils when you get on an airplane, along with your 6 oz bottle of shampoo?
They’ll have to pry the stapler out of my cold dead hand.
Let’s watch Chris Matthews give Rep. Cantor a well deserved spanking yesterday:

Pay attention to this mainstream media! This is how you’re supposed to do your job for crying out loud!
Ronald Reagan is the Father of Deregulation and blaming Clinton and the liberals for what has transpired over the past 2 years/decade is laughable if you ask me.
Wonder if someone could hack tweety’s investment statements?
One- Hang this steaming pile of financial do-do around McCain’s neck via Phil Gramm; his name is on every piece of deregulation (commodities, sub-prime) at the root of this horror show.
Two- Why is the SEC so late to this calamity? Allowing hedge funds to short stocks (AIG, Lehman) to death, which forced the govt. to spend 80 billion to save AIG.
Hedge funds are essentially running the financial markets.
The SEC & the Fed needs to stop that immediately.
You guys will laugh at this:
When my son was in 1st grade, I came home one day to a phone call from the local police department on my answering machine telling me that my son had been threatened by another boy with a pencil. Yep, apparently the little boy said to my son, “I have a pencil and I know how to use it” and pointed the pencil in my son’s direction, which prompted the teacher to call the authorities! After all was said and done, I said to the school, “Is it possible this little boy was bragging to my son that he knows how to use a pencil?”. No laughter. They take that kind of shit seriously. ;-)
Good point. Maybe that is why Chris was pissed off yesterday because he lost a ton of money?
This morning on Morning Joe (*gag*) Joe said the “people out there” (meaning bloggers, of course) are a lot smarter than the people on Wall Street because they’ve been saying for quite some time now that the Bush Regime’s policies will result in what we’ve witnessed this past week!
The days we bloggers sound “paranoid” are the days the MSM should be paying attention!
I think it’s safe to say that the Bush Regime has been running a shadow presidency outside the realm of our nation and we’re witnessing how mucky they’ve made the waters.
And here is that shadow presidency/government which started on the morning of 9/11/01:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..101424.jpg
Ole Dicky did say they would have to go to the Dark Side. Mucky waters!
The Palin e-mail story bothers me.
I know it’s somewhat apples vs. oranges since hackers did the deed and not the govt., but it strikes me as hypocritical to get my shorts in a bunch about FISA then get my popcorn out as I go through Palin’s e-mails.
There’s plenty out there to criticize (most items are from her own mouth) without stooping to this.
Not watching but are you sure for positive it was *scar*!!! who said that? If so, it’d be the first sane thing I’ve ever heard come outta his mouth.
Susan Eisenhower on CNN right now.
Morning. I’m looking at the polls and, for sure, Obama’s getting a bounce but why isn’t he ahead 70% – 30%? That’s what the numbers should read.
And, fwiw, I sort of agree with Tweety, where the hell’s our president? Maybe he knows that a speech from him will induce more panic rather than being reassuring.
Slight correction.
Eisenower said mcsame never reached out to her but Obama contacted her 1 1/2 years ago for her expertise on Russia (think she said Russia).
Yep. I’m almost positive it was ole Joe’s voice who said it. Normally I’m facing the computer screen and listen to my television to the right of my desk. ;-)
STTPinOhio: Bah hahahahahahahahahaha! Exactly.
I think Rove did it. Change the subject, get Palin some sympathy, blast the left and put Palin front and center again. You should venture over to Michelle Malkin’s site. She’s going nuts over this. Was her main story. Sounds like Rove to me.
Bush has just been briefed by the Fed and Paulson, and has been told
that we are fucked.
He has spent the last six hours making inside calls to his cronies so they
can get a jump (inside trading violations) and save a few buckeroos.
The simple answer is racism, as unpleasant as it is to point out.
You cannot make any case with a straight face that John McCain would make a better POTUS than Obama.
None.
Someone can say they ‘like’ McCain more than Obama, and therefore will vote for him, as is their right, but to make the case McCain is a better candidate is ridiculous.
Does it appear weird that Sarah Palin would use Yahoo as her private email account…and would use her name in the address? It does sound like a set-up. I’ve only read one email (it was posted on Ablog) and if it’s truly her email, she sounds very immature if you ask me! Maybe this is why Palin installed a tanning bed in the Governor’s office? To make her feel grown up.
I think she is that simple.
Yup… it’s the cowardly type of racism…
Watch McCain’s ads at the one-week-left marker, and you’ll see it
in all its latent disgust.
Then he resumed his curl up into the fetal position, as he does during any crisis that does not involve war.
Or stupid. ;-)
Also, about Obama’s ratings not heightening to 70-30%. I think his REAL numbers are over 60% and it’s because the younger generation with cell phones are not included in these stats. The sheet number of voters who will come out on election day will win it for Obama even with Palin as VP on McCain’s ticket. The young kids who support Obama are fired up and ready to go and they will be voting this year.
Even on Caucus Day here in Maine…
…the republics managed to bring out 5,000 republics to vote
…while the Democrats brought out 45,000 a week later!
I’m not paying attention to what the MSM is telling me with these polls. I’m listening to the people around me. So far, three long time friends of mine who are registered republicans will be voting for Barack Obama this year. Huge! The nation, no matter what the polls are indicating today, is in the same line. Hell, here in Maine a new group has been started and it’s called: REPUBLICANS FOR BARACK OBAMA. It’s headed by a former Maine GOP chief. ;-)
Not with your eyes or computer!
Just want to offer my thanks to people like yourself that have the stomach lining to keep an eye on her, Hannity, O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Ingraham, etc.
I can’t.
I haven’t actually read any of the email. Were any damning in any way? I assume the answer is no or it would have been reported. That’s why I think it was Rove. Now, if one turns up that says to fire someone cuz she doesn’t like them, then I’ll change my view.
joe has at times sounded brilliant and precient
I remember him doing an entire piece, “is bush an idiot”…and then he made the case that this president is nothing short of a moron
and there have been other times as well
I do believe there are more Obama supporters out there, than will admit
People may fear being ostracized by there neighbors for speaking the truth!
So true.
Rest assured the Harold Ford style “Call me, Barack” ads are in the can and ready to go.
Yeah, like America expects Republicans to come up with an effective strategy that deals with the imploding economy that they created. Maybe the media expects it and the borg collective known as the Republican Party but the rest of the country, not so much.
I am hoping the “regulators” and the democrats who have something to say about it are monitoring the action and find out if anyone shorted these markets before this news came out, and then I want to find out if they have ties to anyone in this administration and if so, I want all that profit returned to the market
the media might have finally gotten it, that the republicans will steal and the grownups have to patch things up
incredible the way reagan and bush ran the deficit, clinton turned that into surplus, this president turned that into the greatest deficit imagineable
I think that’s exactly right.
The MSM wants a close race to the finish, not only because of bias, but ratings as well.
If you’ll move the TV to the “left” side of your desk, I’m sure the reception will improve. *GGG*
I miss the radio extended version of the Washington Journal lineup.

Good Morning Attaturk and Firedogs,
fyi – Southern Dragon was around in late am threads yesterday
Shorter Chambers: Own Your Failures Bitches !
I can’t imagine why anyone with more than two functioning brain cells would even consider the McCain/Palin ticket
makes no sense to me, maybe it is racism, pure and simple!
And the other way around, I fear.
Danny Goldberg on Imus this morning touting his new book. But also making strong points on the country being way out of balance, people can no longer plan on their kids going to college.
An excellent segment that hopefully the WABC website will manage to get up in the Imus interviews section sometime in the next day.
It’ll be worth the listen.
Certainly more than that deRothschild twit getting her 15-mins of camera time…what, did McCain promise her she could sit at the big table with the Queen if he gets elected?
8:30am – Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV), Natural Resources Cmte., Chairman — Inspector General’s Report -PDF
I asked a co-worker who supports McC exactly what criteria she uses to choose a president. She didn’t answer. I backed off as well. It was at work.
You’re forgetting it’s ok that Reagan ran up the deficit; after all that’s how he defeated the Soviet Union in the Cold War.
What crap.
McCain appeals to the older folks who still have that deep seated racist mindset
Basically people stuck in the past!
there is also cognitive disonance…they’ve invested allot of intellectual insightive capitol, emotional capitol and there is now an “us against them” situation, they actually want their party to be right, it’s not their country that’s important anymore, it’s their party
cognitive dissonance is the main factor here, it is hard to admit, after scoffing at “the liberals”, after telling us WE had “tin foil hats” and for all this while finding out their entire belief system is not only wrong, it is flat out opposite reality
this is too hard to take for those who still remain “republican loyalists”
it’s called bullshit
Did’ya hear the man from New England? who just rimmed lucas a few new ones over republics being responsible for deregulation? He gave examples going all the way back to 1800’s and said something about most Americans not having history books in their homes but *he* did.
hehehehe
BT’s swimming around
Morning swim’s up.
I fear this as well, I am hoping those who refuse to vote for a black man simply stay home rather then vote for mccain, I am hoping they don’t go to the polls “thinking” they will vote for obama and then their prejudice precludes them from doing it
well, there is that too
Elliott -
75’s yours. A pox on “reply”!
people learn this from their parents if the parents are racist the kids will be too!
I think there is hope now with the younger generation they don’t seem to have the same biases
I truly fear a Republican strategy that deals with the imploding economy. For example: Tax the poor and feed the rich?
If you’ll move the TV to the “left” side of your desk, I’m sure the reception will improve. *GGG*
if you move the TV the the right side of the desk it will falll off a cliff.
according to bt upstairs, (who I avoid) palin is actually trying to blame fdr
I am telling you, they are going to use this “shock” to get MORE deregulation and MORE privitization
I believe we are above it, let’s find out
LMAO!
synoia, my 84 is for your 82
well, the democrats need to play this ticket…the mkkkain loses every single latin voter if we get this out, from talking points memo which bt linked to up stairs;
that’s huge, if the republikkkans were going to get any latin votes at all, we can insure thery get none with that story
el linkeramundo
Perfect way to ask the question, because posed that way a McCain supporter has no factual answers.
‘Just a feeling’ will be the best they can offer.
they use “experience” as their out, I counter with “mccain has the “experience” of causing the problems we face today, he has the ‘experience” of being wrong about everything he claimed about Iraq, Iran, al qaeda, he has the “experience” of being a military strategic moron, he has the “experience” of voting for the policies that have brought the american economy down, he has the ‘experience” of voting with the president who has done more damage then any other in our history 90 percent of the time
that’s the “experience” you are talking about
obama has the real experience, right on Iraq, right on the regulations that needed be in place which would have protected our economy
so what exactly do you mean ‘experience”?
shuts their mouth fast
I go on;
“there is only one metric that any person could want to vote mccain instead of obama…mccain is white…that is your reason though you refuse to admit it, even to yourself”
man, that gets’m going good
work, see all later
You won’t hear them make a logical “defense” of their economic policies which are trickle down… give more to the rich and they will create jobs so that the unwashed masses can get some crumbs.
Create jobs? Where? When they have the chance, they re engineer their business models, cost costs, offshore their operations and hide/shelter more of the progfits. They don’t even offer less expensive products – they just take more profit if there are production savings. Raises for workers? Nevah!
And that’s my point; no factual answers.
