I know, I know. This is news? But follow with me down that yellow brick road. Biden said something that I’ve been wanting to hear from a Democrat for ages—that the rich paying taxes (or anyone else) is patriotic.
"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
Some president said that once.
There is no government without paying taxes. Like roads? Pay your taxes. Support the troops? Pay your taxes. Like hospitals? Pay your taxes. Enjoy not having to take mum and dad in when they’re eighty because they have SS and Medicare? Pay your taxes.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
Then there’s Palin, displaying the fine undertanding of the economy that drove Wasilla into debt:
“To the rest of America, that’s not patriotism, raising taxes. It is about killing jobs and hurting small business and making things worse,” she continued. “This isn’t about anyone’s patriotism, it’s about Barack Obama’s poor judgment.”
Oh yes, because those rich people did great things with all that money the government didn’t tax from them. Like run the economy into the dirt by paying themselves huge salaries and bonuses to drive the financial sector into the ground. Next time I hear some libertarian idiot say "the most productive people in the economy deserve to keep their money" I’m pulling out a louisville slugger on that nonsense:
So, if you pay yourself tens of millions of dollars you must be "productive", right? Then explain to me what’s productive about making your company go bankrupt? Explain to me why it is the US government, supposedly not productive, is going to have to pay trillions to bail out the mistakes of all the productive people?
Forget rich people being "patriotic" and paying taxes, they need to pay a high tax rate because they’re the ones who keep breaking the economy. They’re the ones who keep coming to Uncle Sam with hand outstretched. "Can you spare a hundred billion, guvernor?"
It’s not welfare! Not if you give it to the rich! Honest!
America’s rich—time they paid the freight.

What is this, the sixth or seventh new post in the past 10 or 15 minutes?
Only one trillion? I’m hoping it’s not gonna be 10. Or more.
I have 15 tabs open….. I can’t keep track…. Hi Ian….
Ladies and gentlemen, Digg is open
Digg it! (anyway)
Dugg your DIGG egregious!!
Jim Webb gets it right on Rachel Maddow’s show: Palin is an example of McCain’s judgment. And shows that he will do anything to win. It isn’t country first. (words like that).
Yeah, rich people. We’re tired of saving you welfare queens!
Egregious and I seem to have Double-Dugg. Egregious gets the official Digg. Please ignore my No. 5 and use her link.
Hey, nahant! How come you didn’t Digg it too? We could have had a Triple-Digg!
Are you counting the entire FDL “blogswarm”?
Otherwise I see 1:30, 2:30, 3:30, 4:30, 5:24, 6:00 and 6:30. Still a pretty short turnaround while we’re trying to watch Rachael Maddow!
FunnyD
I wish everyone in the entire world had a million dollars, healthcare, no war, food, water and ice…Oh yeah, our “taxes” can’t even get food, water, and ice to thousands upon thousands of people after a hurricane. I’m pissed that the “taxes” we pay go mostly for war and killing other people…until this government acts responsibly with our tax money, they should be cut off.
Webb also showed some class by not taking any cheap shots at McCain. He handled it well.
Um, I have been here for about eight minutes, I think. Time to go check and see if there is a new post yet.
I saw you had the ZED so I figured you did the Digging…But no egregious beat ya to it(:>))
Hold on, maybe we just haven’t given Voodoo Economics enough time to work. What if after 28 years the trickle down if finally about to reach us? We shouldn’t give up on it now.
Y’know, I never have gotten what is so bad about paying taxes. I have always felt sort of like responsible for doing so. But my parents (now octogenarians) who both had entire careers and now retirements paid by other people’s taxes (teacher and Air Force pilot), think that the worst thing in the world is to pay taxes. Never have understood it.
I do wish I could have line-item veto for what my taxes went for, like none for stupidasswarinIraq and a lot for infrastructure and healthcare, but I never really resent paying taxes. Whatever happened to the concept of maintaining the Commons?
Hopefully, Biden realizes he HAS to mean it.
We shall see.
Nonetheless, as Ian says, ain’t it sweet?
How much damage can Bu$hCO do?
How much ’spine’ can the ‘better’ democrats raise and maintain?
Can’t be obsequious no mo’.
Got ta take the “BULL” by the horns!
Good point, I don’t object to paying taxes, I object to the government pissing it all away.
Ian, your photo caption reminds me of this old post of mine… Brother, can you spare a Trillion bucks?
Completely unaccounted for, with no end in sight…!
No Z-word for me, nahant! I had the First Comment, thank you.
Horns, schmorns, man. Time to put its ballz in a vise and turn the crank!
FunnyD
ha ha ha??? something wrong with the “ZED” word… you talk like it is a swear word or something??
The rich have destroyed our economy. They should pay the freight. Let’s go back to pre-Reagan tax rates and, if that doesn’t work, let’s go back to Eisenhower tax rates. We’ll see how the Richistanis like keeping a dime for every dollar they “earn.”
Rinse. Wash. Repeat.
The cliché is “Lather, rinse, repeat.”
Don’t go putting the horse before the cart!
I think it’s neuro’s private
neurosispet peeve…! ;-)Or, especially, using it to kill people. Lots of people.
The war-crap is the worst, that always burns me, but without a real social contract, that means something, which includes paying it forward (and ‘back), a society ends up with just what we’ve got …
Time for real, necessary change! Yes!!!
Lets go back to the post WWII tax rates for both the rich bastards and for all the corporations who pay nothing or almost nothing in Taxes… They have screwed the pooch and deserve to be financially punished for destroying the middle classes way of life!
LOL ROLOF

Ouch! I stand corrected, happily.
I can see a bumper sticker there FD.
What if after 28 years the trickle down if finally about to reach us?
Hey, there’s been something trickling down on me for quite a while now.
And it smells bad.
I really don’t wanna know any more….
I wouldn’t mind seeing a law enacted that says “If the US government steps in to bail out a company, no one in that company walks away with a 7 figure golden parachute — and this applies to any severance packages in the 12 months prior to the bailout.”
Looks just like them! What a fine couple they make /S
It looks like DarkBlack is expanding his operations…!
Yeah. You want to save money in the US budget? Slash the military budget in half. You could even increase the number of soldiers at the same time if you did it right.
Do I have to explain that to you again? :)
Clearly I have not been reading my shampoo instructions enough.
Just throwing out ideas, it might be time to consult a plumber, or at least change seats.
Krugman argues that if we cut taxes without cutting spending, we are essentially just moving the tax burden to the future. Well, the future is here. The rich essentially were getting loans from the government, and time to repay them. With interest and penalties. Even if it means me.
Heh, only by half? I was thinking at least 3/4’s and demand receipts…! ;-)
I wouldn’t mind seeing a law enacted that says “If the US government steps in to bail out a company, no one in that company walks away with a 7 figure golden parachute — and this applies to any severance packages in the 12 months prior to the bailout.”,/i>
Excellent idea!
Although we might need about 85 ‘Democrats’ in the Senate to get it through.
Or 95.
And a new Majority Leader….
Seven figures? How about no more than seven dollars and a map to the unemployment line.
I say, no taxes until they give us back the money the “stole” and “mis-spent”…then we can start all over…meanwhile, confiscate their profits and do something about the 9th Ward in NOLA, just for example…Pawlenty got the bridge in MN rebuilt in 3-4 months…to prove that he is a powerful politician??? How did that happen?
It has been 3 years of misery and rip off for homeowners on the Gulf Coast, and now we have the 4th largest city in the country denied “ice”…not “ICE”…while they are suffering from unbelievable devastation that has been blacked out by the Admin. to save face….people are missing..presumed “surged” out to sea…what do we hear…*crickets”…
I’m pretty outraged…sorry….plus, they “bail out” the largest insurance entity in the world…but they say that policies will be honored…
Wake me up when it is over…
Hit them in the pocket book. That would be patriotic. Help the People!!
Ding Forking Ding!!!
THE one time one of my comments over on Kos ended up on the front page….. was about Treasury Sec Snow who was the former CEO of CRX which is the huge rail and truck transport company…. in the years while he was CEO (5 plus) that company NEVER paid income taxes AND received rebates which means they EARNED money from their profits…… AND put in a special clause in his golden parachute contract which would award him a $3 million bonus if he left the company to go into public service ….. WTF?
These are the kids of yeahoos we are dealing with….. I found Snow’s employment contract on FindLaw as it was a public contract due to it being a public company….
Or, President Obama could ‘do’ a ’signing statement’ …
“Extraordinary times, require, sometimes, and this IS one of those times, extraordinary measures, therefore … whrn in the course of human events …”
;~D
watching Rachel talk to a female writer from Slate about Obama doing very well with women voters, it occurs to me that the only way McCrazy is going to win the women’s vote is if there is an attack of some sort on U.S. soil.
Suddenly, I am *really* not looking forward to October.
In all seriousness, Obama *could* put some of those unitary executive powers to good work for a certain amount of time.
There’s some seriously fucked up stuff that he could deal with very quickly – *then* jettison it.
Yes indeedy.
But if that happened it wouldn’t be McInsane benefitting it would be COG time and definitely more of the same with Shrub and Darth at the helm…!
Maybe, like some storied gangsters, they think they’ve covered their ass in terms of getting away with murder, but maybe this ‘MONEY’ thing will bring ‘em down sufficiently for Bugliosi to get their ‘number’ and pin it on their chests?
Seriously…do you really think, with all that you know, that Darth will willingly walk away from power…??? Bush…(he’s bored and wants out)…but Darth…? Seriously? Are there any lengths that you think he would not push for or order to retain power?? Any??? I see no limits to his actions or orders…none at all.
Bugliosi has their number.
Sobering truth, LS.
Why is it OK for Palin and McSame to say that it’s patriotic to put your life on the line in their ill conceived war, but it’s not patriotic to put something as stupid as your money on the line???
“If the US government steps in to bail out a company, no one in upper management in that company walks away with
a 7 figure golden parachuteany assets to their name whatsoever — and this applies to any severance packages in the 12 months prior to the bailout.”Why is it OK for Palin and McSame to say that it’s patriotic to put your life on the line in their ill conceived war, but it’s not patriotic to put something as stupid as your money on the line???
Because, by definition, all money belongs to them, and the health and welfare of other people’s children don’t mean anything?
That was a rhetorical question, right? Because, I agree 100% with ya…!
Hey, Ian, I was anxious to hear your opinion of the idea of creating a gov’mint agency (MFI, of all things) to deal with all that bad debt the financial institutions are holding. Are you gonna do a post on that, or are you gonna wait till more specifics come out?
Its amazing how the Fed/Treas/Congress can find the billions to bail out the companies that are going down the tubes from holding the defaulted mortgages, but couldn’t get their act together to prevent the mass of foreclosures in the first place. What is it now, over $800 billion being committed to keep up the teetering companies? Wouldn’t it have been better from a US economic perspective to instead put $200 billion toward helping struggling homeowners service the mortgages?
On a related topic, a number of homebuyers have had so much of their equity evaporate, a lot of buyers are back to paying PMI. How many of these mortgage insurance companies are struggling from buyers paying PMI a few months and then defaulting on the mortgage?
Boy am I glad that Bush/McBush did not ram through the Privatize Social Security…. as someone who is less than a decade from collecting….. this latest crash could of wipe out a big chunk and endanger millions of senior citizens…..
THE number one cause of death prior to enactment of Social Security was hypothermia… unable to pay for heating
I agree whatever!
Not that I doubt ya, but, are you serious about the hypothermia being the no.1 killer?
You’re expecting specifics?
There’ll be a totally different plan tomorrow
Just watch
Of course! *g*
I wanna see it on their chests, I want the word to go forth, “Try this shit in America, which is not ‘Merkah’, and pay the price, to the last full measure …”
I want home-grown tyrants to know, in NO uncertain terms, that there are serious, perhaps fatal, concequences.
We need justice, but we need a ‘deterent’, and making an ‘example’ of Bush and Cheney is what MUST happen … or we will soon find ourselves right back here.
Nixon should have done time, serious time.
Politicians in America should not get a ‘pass’, simply because they are politicians, ever, neither should their henchmen and henchwomen.
I told you guys and gals that without impeachment they are going to keep skinning us. Nobody would really get behind it and insist on accountability. So the casino is open and gambling with our money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw a NYT report today in the Biz section talking about a likely government bailout of the Detroit automakers. Had a picture of Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli who has been lobbying hard for this. In his previous job at Home Depot, Nardelli walked away with over $200 million and Home Depot in trouble.
This ass is a big time Bush backer and now the government is going to loan BILLIONS to this same crook, because he asked for it?!?!
When I try to get small bank loans, they want a detailed plan of what I’m going to do with it, my “vision,” and my track record. I wouldn’t approve Nardelli for a credit card, yet he has no problem getting billions from the government just two years after bilking another company. Repubs are cancers on America.
The challenge there is putting people of integrity in a position of power great enough to hold politicians and their ilk to task without becoming corrupted themselves.
I hope Pelosi gets voted OUT!
They all need to go to jail. Culture of Corruption, Culture of Death.
Pipedream, I know.
It is we, ‘the people’ who have that ‘position’ already, that IS our job,
corruption is one thing, complacency, another …
Thom Hartman lists this stat when he talks about life before Social Security….
1. Hypothermia
2. Starvation/malnutrition
The elderly were dependent on their extended family to care for them…. and if there was no family….. SOL….. have heard mothers in third world counties state the one reason they had large families was to make sure there was someone to care for them when they get old…..
That just may be right. They did just propose this solution, and I think there was a big meeting tonight, so I doubt anything written in stone yet.
My 71 ls to TLinGA @ 68.
That is my point. No taxes…no bail out. Let these people rot. That would be the patriotic thing to do. Stop the enabling.
Geesh…America needs a 12 step program on dealing with these parasites.
I dislike Nancy but I don’t want her out. I like Steny a whole lot less and then, of course, there’s always Rahm. I would like to see Nancy get a good scare.
Palin is SOOO stupid…it’s truly scary….
And then there’s the gettin’ it wrong media. Before heading out this evening I heard Matthews on Hardball talking about the Obama ad targeting Hispanic voters and I’m sure I heard him say that Janet Hook at the Reagan library debate elicited a McCain response that No, he wouldn’t vote for his own immigration bill now.
And a few minutes later, David Shuster pontificates in total contradiction that the Obama ad was false because…wait for it…McCain had the opposite stance to Rush Limbaugh on immigration. [yeah, until April….]
But doesn’t saying that you’d now vote against your own immigration bill put you in the same boat as the titanic one?
Maybe Matthews and Shuster need to cross-check their scripts and talking points to at least make sure they both report the facts correctly?
Ironically, that still holds true about large families in third world nations… Now, due to the huge spike in heating oil/energy costs and Shrub’s veto of increases in LIHEAP’s budget, we due for de ja vu, all over again…! 8-(
My, you are so picky – check their facts – surely you’re kidding. :)
And another example of slanted media, NBC Nightly News reporting on candidate appearances/themes today and their talk about stands on taxes totally leaves out that Obama-Biden’s tax proposal is for the top 1-2%, NOT all Americans. In fact, the rest of us would get tax cuts.
But I guess when you’re up in the rarefied air that the McCainstream Media breathe in, they don’t notice there are people earning less than $250,000 per year out here in the real world.
I don’t like any of them. They have not served us well at all. They cowtow to big business and other foreign entities….Pelosi had the world at her feet, and she threw it away in an unintelligent way. That is part of the reason we are in the situation we are in right now. She has proven herself to be a coward in bucking Bush…Impeachment hearings would have prevented pardons, which will be forthcoming, for all of those belligerents who have refused to honor subpoenas and emboldened the likes of Todd Palin, who as of tonight, refuses to honor his subpoena.
Clean house…Pelosi, Reid, Hoyer, Rahm…they need to go..they are not worthy of representing their constituents….The financial mess has been a long time brewing..They could have taken action, but nooooo….Pelosi has bent over for Bush every single step of the way other than in “words”…
All grease, no machinery. OUT.
Picky Prairie, that’s me…or prickly *g*
Don’t disagree – just think Steny is worse. I just can’t stand him. He would not do one thing about Repub excess. He’s bought and paid for.
I know what you mean. They’d all go, if it was up to me, but it isn’t.
$$$$
Yeah, but Repub enablers like Politico and other BigMedia outlets, and the polling companies, are doing whatever the can to keep the
dreamnightmare alive.http://news.yahoo.com/s/politi…..tico/13584
It’s clear the problems we’re facing now are a result of Repub policies. Few are arguing this at the moment. So why would the Got Our’s, Piss-off Party be making a comeback at their darkest hour?!?
Speaking of the polling companies, have you seen the book and.or interview with the Gallup whistleblower? He’s confirming what many of s have been saying for years about Gallup and the others, namely they exist simply to help amplify and give “cred” to the pre-approved BigMoney narratives.
Quote from a review:

Does anyone get the impression that a whole lot of people are grabbing all the money they can before they split and leaving We the People holding the bag?????
It is called a “sting”….
Just sayin’.
It is both parties. The cocktail weanie brigade.
We are being ripped off, trashed, and left to flail our way out.
I expect some other really big developments as they drive the stake into the country, before they flee…
They’ve taken everything but the dining room chairs – the little people are left to pick over the corpse.
With the attack/invasion/occupation of Iraq early in third year of first Bush/Cheney regime there surely was a need to put Americans on a war tax footing to pay for George The Deciders and Dick The Dick’s little expedition for Iraqi crude and West Asian hegemon.
Never happened.
They borrowed for it. “Off budgeted” for it. Told whopping fiscal lies like “Iraqi people will pay for Americans having invaded and wrecked Iraq”.
Oh the lies were deep and wide.
Several years later,George The Decider and Dick The Dick are still in the WH and now Wall Street is experiencing what in the nuclear energy biz is called a “China Syndrome”.
One is left to wonder once again where all the “free markets are best” and “the best government is the least government” piety and stations of the cross for private profits Wall Street worships so ardently went?
Gosh–Grover Norquist–that killer of government prophet and hater of taxes– must be flying out of orbit over how suddenly the Bush/Cheney regime( a GOP sponsored creature) is now doing ‘Carpathia’ rescue runs over and over for all these “hit iceberg-sinking fast at the bows-not much time left afloat” styled Wall Street Titanic distress calls and rockets.
One would not mind this kind of hypocrisy quite so much if Wall Street was as willing to share the loot, plunder and pillage of profits taken, booked and banked side of things as it is the fiscal meltdowns and red ink storms.
Question always returning then is–Why do the Republicans hate effective government and governance and try to wreck good government when they control it yet dole out the big billions to Wall Street when that streets insatiable greed lands it in the no bottom/free fall fiscal ruination zone?
After all–Is not “big government” truly bad according to Wall St. gospel?
Why is this so?
This ain’t capitalism–this ain’t socialism–this is fiscal fascism for top third of Americans while the lower two thirds of Americans get nothing like it in comparison in terms of government wealth transfusion/infusion.
Call it selective safety net creation and deployment for some but not all.
If WashingtonDC can throw these tens and tens(hundreds?)of billions of $$ out to Wall Street why can not all Americans have single payer, first tier health, medical coverage?
These Wall Street bailouts are not passing any smell test. Not any.
Verra nicely put.
Great aim, as usual, shootthatarrow.
Looks like Palin shouldn’t have gotten that expensive tanning-room installed on the publics tab
Blame it on FDR! Or Clinton!
You nailed it.
They could tax bail-out packages above $1 at 100%.
Blame Canada !
And we’re the cattle. Or perhaps hard-working chattel.
Message to Palin: SPIN, BABY, SPIN
Here’s what’s really interesting…so we are socialising everything because the unregulated capitalists let their greed go beyond the pale. It turns out the Russians, who turned everything over to the capitalists are even WORSE HIT.
Moscow Stock Bourse Shut Down as Shares Plummet
I saw a report done for the state of CA, that says the state’s economy will do better with regulations and laws favoring alternative energy and cleaner air and water that it will if nothing is done.
The business groups are saying that they want more studies done. (They aren’t happy about ‘going green’, even though previous experience indicates this study’s result is probably accurate.)
In the 60’s sitcom “The Beverly Hillbillies,” the banker Mr. Drysdale was trying to help Jed Clampett avoid paying taxes, but Jed, being a loyal patriot asked, “Well why would I not want to pay my taxes, Mr. Drysdale?” and Mr. Drysdale exclaimed, “Why, my good man, because that’s the American way!”
Back then, hillbillies were Democrats.
