Michael Shaw at BAGNewsNotes found this 1995 image of Sarah Palin at her Wasilla City Council desk. It appears to be her official portrait, and a mundane one at that.
What's striking, as Michael points out, is the article in front of her: It's a piece about the "Con Con Call" -- one of those hysterical non-issues that conspiracy theorists of the far right in 1995 were shrieking about, involving an attempt by a handful of governors to organize a convention aimed at fighting what they saw as states' subordinate status. (Yes, the shrieking shut it down.)
One of the organizers of that particular torch-bearing mob was the John Birch Society. And sure enough, the article that Palin is proudly displaying in this portrait is a copy of the March 1995 edition of New American, the house organ of the Birch Society.
The article in question was written by Don Fotheringham. (It's no longer in the NA's archives, but you can read the text of it at this site.)
The Birchers are best known for their ardent McCarthyism and their long career in promoting cockamamie conspiracy theories about supposed Communist infiltration of government -- not just in the '50s and '60s, but well into the late '80s, until the fall of the Soviet Union. At that point, they simply picked up the same act and transferred it to promoting similar theories about the "New World Order" under Bill Clinton in the 1990s. (Chip Berlet has one of the best disquisitions on the Birch Society's long career.)
These same theories were the raison d'etre of the militia movement -- and indeed, the Birch Society ardently promoted the militias and related "Patriot" activity. I used to see their material on sale at militia gatherings regularly.
So it's probably not a coincidence that Sarah Palin was proudly reading Bircher magazines at the same time she and her husband were attending Alaskan Independence Party gatherings and making friends with its leaders, and the same year her husband signed up as a member. Because the AIP, as we've detailed, has a long history of being part of this same "Patriot" movement contingent.
It might be no wonder that an AIP follower like Todd Palin doesn't believe he has respond to official subpoenas. After all, "sovereign citizenship" -- fancy words for "I'm exempt from your laws" (based on the notion that the government was "illegitimate") -- was a staple of the Patriots, too.
That's quite the VP nominee John McCain picked there.
UPDATE: Ben Smith at Politico has the story too.

Oh, no! A new post again!
It’s my suspicion that when Palin talks about her “mission” it’s actually connected to this Alaska independence stuff. Plus of course the religious wackjobbery.
Is Sarah Palin A Closet John Bircher? WTF I thought that breed died out long ago!! Man did they ever have a some radical ideas about government!
Digg it before it goes away!
She looks so proud of that publication.. she’s about sign it and have it framed.
When I was a kid they wanted to impeach Chief Justice Earl Warren
They had big billboards that said so
“I’m exempt from your laws” — just in case we didnt get enough of that from Bush/Cheney.
Dugg your Digg neuro!!
Oh, goody. (im)Palin is even more psycho than we thought and has ties to active terrorist organizations.
Me too. She’s all giddy at getting the god given chance to go for her “mission”. It is completely different than McCain’s mission. She was a Ron Paul supporter. She’s playing along with the McCain deal, because she has the opportunity.
She and her family (Todd dude and offspring) are survivalists.
Scaaaaary.
Fluoridation of water was a Communist plot!
The bloom has come off the rose and it is now becoming clear that although McCain might have connected on the Hail Mary, they will fall well short of the goal line.
BTW the Balance Queen Candy Crowley just discovered that Obama has a ground game that far eclipses McCain’s.
thanks, nahant
Digg it for David and FDL!
Purity Of Essence. That’s what we need more of, Mandrake!
LOL where was she during the primaries?
However will the Alaska Coverup Team spin this? Sure seems like a fulltime job that Ed O’C and his buddies have up north.
Ya know I have watched a lot of Diagnosis Unkowns in which wives had killed their husbands and almost got away with it. Plus it wouldn’t take much to incapacitate the old codger and take over.
Off to bed. More young minds to corrupt tomorrow.
My experience with the John Bircher’s…… I was in high school and my mother was president of AAUW and they were working with the HS to put age appropriate sex education in the health class…… they developed the curriculum and worked with the school…. and then they started targeted my mother….. she was driven off the road twice…… and they called our house day and night….. threatening phone calls ….
My sister and I handled the calls….. between my Dad’s elk whistle….. and answering the phone as “Murphy’s mule barn….. Head mule speaking” …. the cops were at our place…… a lot that summer…
Seems the religious stuff is the real driving force behind her. Amazing how sure she is of herself and what she’s doing at the moment. Considering how ridiculous all her arguments for her being the VP pick (probably written by Team McInsane), you’d think she’d start laughing at herself and saying, “Alright, you g-eyes and gaaaahhls aren’t really falling for this shit, are ya?!?! I can see Russia from my house…c’mon people!”
Instead, since she believes doG put her in this position, she’ll now march on completely sure that she deserves to be here, facts be damned.
Like the Blues Brothers, she’s on a mission from Gadd:

Tweety said Bush was like a cuckoo clock with his speech today.

The future of their party.
Hi, Teddy!
Speaking of Teddy Partridge, I want all you Diggers here to know that Teddy had a post earlier today about McCain and the Keating 5 that at last count had received 67 Diggs, pretty good for an FDL post. Any who have not already done so may want to go there and Digg it now to run up the score and bring fame and reknown to Teddy and FDL.
You’re such a pimp :-)
neuro are you a salesman??
actually, no, I have always thought that was the line of work I would be the least successful in
although I have taken to doing some political PR lately if that counts…
Remember that chart earlier today showing her negatives had risen 21 points in 8 days - must be something close to a record.
Obama preaches hope…I really hope that Sarah turns out to have the Birch Society in her background and that the story breaks wide open
It might carry some weight with people old enough to remember the Birchers from their heyday
One of the things I didn’t mention in the piece is the extent to which the Patriot movement was a product of how Bircher ideology spirals up into ugly and even violent behavior, particularly in the militia movement.
It was everywhere in Idaho, particularly because there was a connection between the Birch Society and the Mormon Church. Here’s an excerpt from In God’s Country:
OT: Per FiveThirtyEight.com projections:
– Obama has a 45% chance of winning Ohio.
– If Obama wins Ohio, he has a 99.3% chance of winning the election
– If Obama loses Ohio, he has a 31.6% chance of winning the election
– Obama has a 61.2% chance of winning the election
Shorter: For Obama to win the election, winning Ohio is sufficient but not necessary.
Not having read FiveThirtyEight, is it a calculation that as goes Ohio, so goes Indiana, Wisconsin, etc…
or is it straight electoral math?
I’m glad I’m not the only one to say Oh, another new post. I’m crazy enough on my own, and then with all this crazy news, and then a post at 9:17? I do love David, though, not to give the wrong impression.
Wahhhh.
A toxic but possible mix…Blackwater gets contracted to run the State Police or Natinal Guard militarizing the red states. Scaary or what. The neocons are so into it. Look at San Diego border contracts and more.
Yeah, putting this up was based on competitive concerns.
Yer just a bunch of gold old boys that need shakin’ up and reformin’ because yer from Washinton and yer corruptin’ the people from the heartland and the God fearin’ citizens are gonna say hey, I’m not gonna take this anymore….that’s why he chose me to be here.
-St. Sarah of the Glaciers
As I understand it, it’s fairly sophisticated statistical inference, e.g,, Bayesian networks or something like that. It appears to involve cross-correlations between various states. There’s an interesting table of some of that stuff in the lower right corner of their front page fivethirtyeight.com
What’s the competition?
Eureka Springs has music upstairs!
Late Late Nite FDL: Duo Solo’s with Amy Kuney & Sam Prekop
That infestation was in Placerville CA….. there was quite a group of them there in the late 60’s…. it was hard to have that kind of violence touch your life over education so young….. and I was seeing the LDS connection too…. Same when I lived in Idaho….
I have in-laws who sent their kids to John Birch youth camps. They saw the look of shock on my face and said “Oh they just learn about civics.” Yeah, right.
A Palin/McInsane plan. Arizona is a hotbed of Birch Society…like the Klan they may disappear but they don’t go away. “Community Activista” all funny she does not like them. The FBI is not sopposed to like them but under Bush I don’t kmow just sayin. Palin has no quam using violence and just say in don’t envy Edward teller up there under her administration there could be vigilantes. He needs our support.
Or, should I ask what’s the concern?
I had a nice elderly Civics teacher when I was a junior in High School (1969) and he was an admitted Bircher. He made no qualms about it and would lecture us on Bircher philosophy for the first half of the class and then we would talk about events of the day which mostly was about civil rights and the Vietnam war.
Federalist Society legions of tomorrow. Can’t wait.
David….. There have been a ton of posts today, glad all the subjects are getting covered but I barely get to discuss the issue and poof a new post…… I don’t know if this is to save the servers to reduce the number of comments per post or just the way it will be but I miss the more in depth discussion with a longer thread…..
‘evening, all…
some experience with the Birchers and their spiritual offspring, the militias, here in FL. Important to note, as Tim McVeigh’s psychiatrist said,”he didn’t do it because he was crazy-he did it because he was serious.”
These people are serious. Probably 90% would never do more than stockpile supplies-but they would supply logistics, intelligence, and aid in escaping. The other 10%? Genuinely scary-and if Obama does get elected, as GregB said a few weeks ago, the McVeigh wing of the Republican Party is going to get the band back together.
Count on it. It is completely possible that as a result, large-scale applications of the Bush-era laws could come from a Democratic Administration.
The tools of power are the same, no matter who wields them.
Birch-Federalist-Jesus Camps. How lovely.
Thanks, neuro! You are always so sweet and true with the Diggs!
OMG that was my experience in HS, same year…… even threatened to give me an F which would prevent my graduation because of an assignment which rested on the whim of a congressional staffer to answer a letter from a HS student…….. Ya he pushed his agenda over and over again…..
Yeah, what you said, and if you stay on a thread for more than a few comments, you get a kind reminder that there is a new post. Like, get outta here or something.
ES is upstairs
I’ve been thinking about that a lot the last few days. What’s Vlad the ImPalin gonna do after they get smoked on Nov 4? Surely she’ll be so emboldened by all this that she’ll think doG wants her to keep trying for national office for the next 25 years. (yeesh!)
That’s why she must taken down hard right now (figuratively of course) so she can’t resurrect herself along with Jeezus. I can see JebShrub trying down the road as well. He’s already trying to separate from his brother from Hell, and the short term memory public will be intentionally swayed into thinking Jeb’s different by the BigMedia.
The best thing to do is make sure people understand that all this Death and Destruction around the globe, and the robbing of taxpayer money and the Fed was caused completely by Repubs. At it’s most core level, modern day Republicanism will always lead to this. It’s a flawed strategy.
What Democrat means and what Repub means have changed dramatically over time, and I don’t see why we can’t do that again. We have the opportunity to eliminate modern day Republicanism completely, and to make Russ Feingold a “centrist” Dem. We owe this to our children.
More than a third of the Yes on Eight/Hate money comes from Utah, and the Mormons claim credit for all of it and then some.
Didn’t die out, morphed, as has the Klan, and Aryan Nation.
Idaho kicked them out long ago . . . where are they now? Hmmm?
They are OUT there . . . I garentee it, as much as I garentee racism is a huge part of this country. Still.
Course, that all falls under ignorance, and power and control . . . and that’s been a part of the species for millineum’s, hasn’t it . . . *G*
“When will they ever learn . . .”
I agree katymine, there are so many stories on a daily basis it is hard to find time to read them all let alone engage in a meaningful discussion in the comments. Fewer would be better.
Dad was an Arizona Bircher, A drink and he was looney and sometimes got out the six shooter. Step mom took it all in stride go figure. Loved to sing about “The yankees are Comin…The General Lee”. Could not stand the hatred it was looney.
You’re mocking me? kidding.
unfortunate timing there, nahant…LOL
Ya reading that post over on kos front page….. wonder if they are helping with our “Yesformarriage” ballot measure that is on ours this year……. those @#$#@ Repugs did it again…… they are running those soft gooshie commercials about how wonderful marriage is……… AND by voting for that they will be dis-enrolling thousands dependents of state, city and county employees straight or gay……
Birch-Federalist-Jesus Camps. How lovely. Add Blackwater and they are good to go.
Depending on the intent, I would think.
I hope there’s not a trend towards discouraging interpersonal communication.
Just wondering.
They aren’t already? ……
Great… my next door neighbor is LDS and hte boys from Utah are regulars visitors.““““““““““““““““““““`
Under a McPalin administration, they would be called “reformers.”
Yeah, that’s what we need, Sarah. Reform.
Now THAT hoss, is spoken with a true tinfoil hat I can buy into.
I’m with ya . . . we’re that close to a military dictatorship.
And Blackwater, yet, might help produce it.
I’m hopin for WAY better, but yes, your posit is possible.
N here I was just calming down this past month . . . ;-)
Nice comment, hoss . . . . we’re in a grey zone so bleak it’s really difficult to see all the shadows and shapes . . . . anything’s possible again.
Palin/Cheney. After McCain passes from ‘natural causes’ pre or post erection.
Cheney is in the shadows, as is his Rovian Rider.
Silently scaring, moving, and shaping shadows.
If we beat them, this will be a HUGE temporary stopgap.
If we don’t beat them, well . . . . .
Threads stay open for a while, if people are having a conversation about them, they should stay and ”chat.” But there’s so much happening so fast nowadays, it’s important for the blog to keep up. People are turning to the blogs for news this election cycle, and FDL wants to stay in that mix. But the community, and commenting, is also important, so folks should stay around if there’s a conversation going. I don’t see any intent to discourage communications, just a need to stay current. Don’t want folks popping only to find stale news at the top of the front page.
And there is a LOT going on, as this afternoon and evening’s threads prove. There was stuff that didn’t get there, to boot — believe me!
Just my two cents.
Who? What planet does this stuff come from?
Thanks Teddy. There sure is a lot going on. And, might I say Yikes.
I’m glad to hear your 2 cents that there’s no intentional discouraging of conversation. I’ve grown fond of so many people here, including You.
I just read the article and it sounds like it is arguing against the separatist ideals of AIP.
Katy, I’m in Sacto now . . . I was in Bay Area then in late 60’s.
Since we came to Sacto in ‘88, I’ve seen more meth freaks, aryans, and general skin heads than I did in a lifetime . . .
And here in ‘08, we now have advanced immigrants of various Russian elements who favor and avow crime, bigotry, homophobia, and in general shave heads and act as bad as the meth freaks. But they pass themselves off as Christians. Ya know?
And they ARE affiliated with local non Russian Skinheads, and Aryans.
Only hard law from Sac Bulldog Sheriff Deputies (who often look the other way) keep them in line from total mob insanity.
Life is interesting, I assume it is for everyone else, too. *G*
PS…Asked and Answered. Ha. I love it.
and…
(Badger!)
My apoligies to Mr. Neiwert, great article.
I KNOW a few folks in Idaho, near where the KKK and Aryan’s were held out a decade ago . . . or more. And they paint grim pics of their presence, and glowing pride that the bastids were moved out and on. *G*
The key Q is, where are they now?
The key A, is, everywhere. They are everywhere, as they always have been.
And that’s why one has to fight the good fight, every day. Every moment.
Everywhere. Or they leech in and start to rot solid foundations.
It’s how they do it. History has milleneum’s of examples of the same.
Harumph.
that sure is crazy, crazy talk, when, clearly, all major institutional structures are demonstrating their legitimacy every day …
we have such legitimate Presidential elections, as seen in 2000 and 2004.
The will of the people is expressed in the ballot box, and our Leaders turn it into policies, as seen in the 2006 Congressional elections.
We have such a legitimate 4th estate, acting as a check on Govt excesses!
We have such a legitimate Opposition Party - one wrong move and the Democrats are all over it with their relentless Investigations …
our Justice Dept is very legitimate, just ask don siegelman or the fired US Attorneys.
The FBI of course is synonymous with Legitimacy, they finally got their man on the Anthrax case, Congressional Hearings to the contrary notwhithstanding. The Postal Service sorting machines weaponized it, who’da thunk it?
The Titans of Finance, they legitimately earn their seven and eight digit annual compensation - and they are zealously watched by legitimate Government Regulatory Agencies.
And of course the Dollar is legitimately the worlds reserve currency, because they know the Fed would never inflate the money supply to pay for imperial wars as other less scrupulous, less legitimate rulers have done throughout history.
Ron, nice turn about, and fair play, too . . .
Damn . . . once it’s watered down, it’s never watered back up.
Executive Signings . . .
We’ll see . . . there IS hope that Feingold and others are gonna try and stop this Executive Presidency stuff . . . I’ll believe, like you, when I see it. *G*
Country first? Which one?
Country first? Then testify, you cowards!
New question for Katie’s quiver:
“So, Governor Palin - while you and your husband are sitting out the investigation into corruption in your office… Oh, nice nails! Where do you go for those?”
Things I’ve heard on tv the past 2 days.
McSame & McPalin campaigning together means they are covering half as much ground as Obama/Biden.
Voters look at how dishonest campaigns are run and campaign ads are and feel that is an example of how that candiate would run the country.
McSame’s loosing women voters. With the high prices of groceries, rising prices of taking kids to doctors or purchasing prescriptions, paying the heat and electric bills, high insurance rates and $80. to fill up a tank of gas, jobs/good jobs hard to find, women feel the effect of these price hikes the most.
McSame’s been in congress about 30 years he holds some responsilibility for the mess we are in today.
I feel like McSame has been thrown under the rug by reporters that usualy toot their horn for the GOP. What’s going on?
Sez Sarah:
“Mandrake! Get over here and feed me this belt, boy…”
F-n LooneyToon…
Yes, it is.
Is the Bay area still good for wein-making? I’d guess there’s lots of grape skins and not many skinheads there. I had a friend who lived there bak in the 60s. He did a lot of wild things, sacrificed a few years of his life I’d guess, but lived to tell the tale. Finally he went off to Denver to study with a great master of Buddhism. It really shaped his life. Gary went from that to other things and now he’s in NC working on IT for the government. Network management, I guess you’d call it. But, he’s still fond of his memories from that time.
It makes me sad to think of such gentle people and now all this crazy talk about skinheads, John Birchers, secessionists and fighting. All the time fighting. It’s not normal. It’s tragic. We have so many other more important things to do.
Nice post. The Rethugs really picked a winger for VP.
BTW, a small typo in your last graf (see below).
The worst part is, it looks like the bastards are gonna get away with it.
This investigation looks like toast. Maybe next year they will revisit it, but most likely just drop it if she isn’t the governor any more…
