Troy Eid, the Rove-appointed U.S. Attorney in Colorado who tossed off the case of the would-be Obama assassins, is deeply concerned about meanie bloggers he blames for the resulting spate of bad press. He might better spend his time reading his own affidavits.
Here’s the AP version of what was in the affidavit:
Johnson later told a federal agent that the men talked about assassinating Obama only because he was black, according to a federal arrest affidavit. Johnson said he also heard Adolf say that he wanted to kill Obama "on the day of his inauguration" and that he would "find high ground to set up and shoot Obama," the affidavit said.
And yet in his press conference announcing there wasn’t "enough evidence" to pursue conspiracy charges against the men, Eid said:
"You know, they didn’t, they didn’t reveal a plan. I think what you can see in the affidavit was, uh, a lot of racist rantings and a lot of dislike for the idea of Senator Obama as an African-American person of color being able to pursue that office."
Not only did these men have a plan, they had the material for carrying it out and appeared to be in the early stages of doing so. Investigators found high-powered rifles, ammunition, disguises, walkie-talkies, and maps, all indicative of a coordinated plan to assassinate Obama.
As Brad Jacobson at Media Bloodhound notes, you couple all this with the admission by one of the participants, and it’s clear that Eid’s office had before them (as the FBI made clear in recommending charges be filed) evidence of motive, intent, and plan — as well as both the means and the capability of carrying it out. Moreover, as is always critical in conspiracy cases, they evidently took steps to do so.
This is the same U.S. Attorney who was forced upon Coloradans by Karl Rove, despite being profoundly compromised by his associations with Jack Abramoff. Not only was Eid hired while Monica Goodling was calling the shots, his chief deputy was "vetted" by Goodling.
Two questions arise — one minor, one major:
– How often has Troy Eid ignored the FBI’s recommendations in the past when it comes to filing charges in cases of this nature? (We know when it came to a black man inside a prison threatening John McCain — despite a clear lack of capability of actually carrying out the threat — Eid was eager and willing.)
– Is this administration — and particularly this Justice Department, as deeply compromised as it has become by the Bush White House’s crass politicization — capable of ensuring that true threats against Democratic figures like Obama are taken seriously and dealt with appropriately?

Eid survived the Attorney General purge early in Bush’s second term. Now we are learning why.
“Heckuva Job, Eidie“
Oh, and thanks to Chuck Schumer and Dianne Feinstein, who approved the current leadership of the Justice Department. Nice going, Chuck and Dianne. Many thanks from a grateful nation.
I Take back yesterdays comment. was not aware or didn’t remember that FBI had that much.
No, this has been another case of easy answers to . . .
Digg It Dave!
So, is he announcing open season on Obama?
Isn’t this something that Congress should be concerned about?
Bob in HI
Very scary indeed. If something happens (God forbid), we’ll know for sure where to start looking. Reminds me of LIHOP
This sorta reminds me of the scene in Little Shop of Horrors where Bill Murray is begging for a root canal and Steve Martin doesn’t want such a willing patient.
These Denver guys are just jumping up and down holding out their wrists for the handcuffs and Big Tony says nah.
Question: Are the men free or still in jail for the drug charges?
I put this up earlier today but from my scandals list:
I hope Obama has hired his own security team.
Remember the Secret Service hate speech stuff last year?
Is this administration — and particularly this Justice Department….capable of ensuring that true threats against Democratic figures like Obama are taken seriously and dealt with appropriately?
Answer – yes.
*Will* this administration and DOJ do anything to protect against threats to the Democratic candidate?
Answer – no.
According to the article they could get up to twenty years.
Two of them are being held on drug charges. Adolf had seven outstanding warrants already.

“deception” is all McCain has left.
Ride’n around town, hate’n, cursing blacks and democrats, carrying guns and blow….
Not a crime to the BushCo DOJ. Just another citizen being responsible in a Republican way.
Medal of freedom is in the mail.
I still say that Troy Eid, in the picture above, looks like a mafioso defendant.
I like tonight’s expanded picture better though, because with Abu sitting at his side and, in my imagination, representing him, he is sooo fucked.
Would it be possible to put some pressure on the Governor or the lege in Colorado to do something about this Republican thug? This is a disgrace for that state.
blackwater? i hope not.
jeez, sorry, o/t again.
david gregory playing a negative ad against kerry & dems re terrorists. Oh good one david!
oh no! just people he can rely on. not some cheney moles.
Deception enabled by folks like NBC Nightly News which reports McCain-Palin attacks on Obama’s proposed tax increases while leaving out the key fact that it applies only to the top 1-2% who have been getting a mega tax break for the last 8 years at the expense of the middle class.
Brian scrambling to play his littlest “it’s all about me” violin?
That’s the problem, the Governor and state legislature have no authority against this a**hat – he’s Fed.
i want it to be people we can rely on too – not to start shooting people.
I do believe I see french cuffs in that picture,but I digress…
This scares the crap outta me for the obvious reasons. Honest to god, what in the hell is it going to take before this crap stops?
I have a 14 yr old son,and I’m TRYING to teach him about integrity. It’s really hard when all around him he sees people being admired, respected and getting rich by having anything BUT integrity. You would not believe what kids admire in one another at school these days,it’s incredibly frightening and sad.
sickening. and Lawrence o’donnell saying “obama wants to raise taxes, which is true and mccain wants to privatize ss which is true.”
gah.
I really do not care for David Gregory.
It is all he ever had.
I know they don’t but surely they could put some sort of pressure on the DOJ. This is terrible and I don’t think it should be allowed to stand. Americans need to know about this.
Tim Pawlenty(!) saying McCain is all about regulation. tried to hold the line on Enron, wasn’t successful…
hmmmm.
And anyone with that level of denial, that would be the Prosecutor, has a serious mental disorder. Dealing with reality is an extremely important mental function.
The USA position is at the pleasure of the president. If Obama wins and operates according to tradition he would ask the dem. Governor and/or dem
senator(s) for a recommendation.
That presupposes that anyone in the Bush Admin would actually pay attention to anything coming from a Dem Governor and Dem controlled state lege.
Assumes facts not in evidence.
but David Gregory likes David Gregory
tried to hold the line on Enron, wasn’t successful…
attaboy, Tim. Let’s bring up McCrazy’s record of success….
heh, even when they try their best to lie for him, McCrazy still comes off looking incompetent.
padilla on the other hand…
God forbid anybody try to hurt him. If anything of that nature was to happen, I suspect this country would just explode. And quite justifiably.
Agree.
Indeed, he’s so nice while asking elected officials his nice questions and inviting them to speak their propaganda speak.
Pawlenty: maverick, reform, appeal, maverick, reformer, strong, maverick, reform, brings people together!
on obama: pretty speechs, rhetoric, bad bad obama
why doesn’t DG ask him about bridges???
From my sister…
Hmmmmmm..:)
‘If con is the opposite of pro, is Con gress the opposite of progress?’
and I see Brad Schlozman with a better dermatologist :D
padilla on the other hand…
Oh, now that’s not a fair comparison.
Padilla was obviously a threat – wasn’t he caught actually swinging buckets rapidly around his head (a substantial step in the building of a dirty bomb, as any terrorist master-mind would know)?
Frankly, I think those types of efforts are supposed to fail
(wink, wink) let John handle this reform crap and we’ll kill it on the floor.
Yeah, and what about the “high-powered rifles, ammunition, disguises, walkie-talkies, and maps”…
Oh yeah, that was those innocent Colorado guys.
he’s gonna be lucky to occasionally fill in on the saturday Today show come early November – his numbers are worse than F*er Carlson’s
our Ms Maddow otoh, is the top rated MSNBC show !
As Suzanne mentioned on the day news broke about the original arrest … this all happened due to simple good police work during a simple traffic stop. No DHS super duper top secret BS needed.

Can’t the Colorado BAR do something? He may have a federal appointment . . . but doesn’t he still have to follow a code of conduct?
Doesn’t self-awareness require a higher order of intelligence? Amoeba watching television nudge each other when Gregory comes on and say, “Man, that guy is DUMB.”
I would have to agree. There (McVeigh) is no history (McVeigh) of white, supremacist meth heads (McVeigh) ever engaging in terrorism (McVeigh).
i think the rightwingers have been referring to the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005. don’t know if the bill was bad, good or indifferent (not having read it). but i just looked up mccain’s relationship to this bill, s.190 i think, – and he is a co-sponsor. but as far as i can tell he became a co-sponsor months after the bill had died. weird.
The state bar or the federal bar
Do you think this US Attorney would even do anything if it had gone even further such as an actual attempt with shots fired?? Nope no way ” They would just that they were just blowing off Steam” or some such nonsense!! And if they were successful I bet they would never capture the perpetrators… on purpose!
But that wouldn’t be POLITE.
After all that has gone down, 9-11, Ahganisran, Iraq, torture, Katrina, politization of everything, FISA, … Hugh’s List, for heaven’s sake, you actually think that much of anything would happen?
It would just be more SHOCK! ANGUISH and CONFUSION.
I would like to think you correct, but 30%(or more) of the country would probably be openly pleased and everyone with conscience and a heart would be demoralised and Bu$hCo would implement the Great Lockdown.
Look, in the sixties, John Kennedy, MalcolmX, MLK, and Robert Kennedy were gunned down and nothing happened, nothing at all; folks were appalled but nothing changed, things were covered up and Congress went out of its way to concoct magical theories, which most somehow ‘believed’, even though, now, very many do not.
And, supposing things did “explode”?
What would come of it except the Great Lockdown?
the image of him with rappin’ Rove will never leave me,
and will never be forgiven.
Thom Hartman has been saying for over a year that we shouldn’t be looking at the fired US Attorneys but look at the ones who were NOT fired and find out why…. what were they willing to do/no do to keep their positions, what were they willing to sell their souls FOR?
Is this what Eid did to sell his soul or is there more?

Regarding the forgotten disaster in Houston.

They HAVE SOULS???
I don’t know. Walking around the office and the city now and just listening in on random conversations, people are (as of this week) genuinely scared.. and not about some distant, foreign menace. And the one thing that they’re even vaguely hopeful about is Obama. Take away hope like that, when people most need it and through a suspicious act of terror, and I think think people will take to the streets. The portion of rethugs who would (secretly) applaud such a terrible act live in da’ burbs, weigh 500 pounds, and are capable of relating emotionally only to their teevees.
This kind of stuff:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/…..9651.story
Ok ok….. maybe I was being too kind …. that is my logical mind…. are they even human…..
here’s a white “terrorist” for you (not a meth-head or a supremacist though). jeff luers, when he was 22, received a sentence of 22 years and 6 months for his act of terrorism. his target, you ask? three suvs.
Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been disinvited from a rally planned for Monday to protest Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s U.N. visit. Earlier in the week, Hillary Clinton dropped out of the event when Palin was added to the list of speakers. Now rally organizers have asked Palin to stay away, bowing to pressure from Jewish Democrats who argued that her presence would turn the event into a Republican political rally. (The McCain campaign had called for Senator Barack Obama to join Palin at the event in a show of unity against Iran.) In fact, all American political figures have been asked not to come, though Politico says the decision was all about Palin. The group, Stop Iran Now, said in a statement that ”in order to keep the focus on Iranian threats and to ensure that this critical message not be obscured, the organizers of the rally have decided not to have any American political personalities appear.”
I’m sorry but you are impossible – if someone is shooting at Obama I WANT THEM SHOOTING BACK!
Previous poster said they hoped he had good security and the first thing that comes to your mind is Blackwater??? WTF
Obama has a Secret Service team that is probably three times larger than McCain’s, and he got it sooner – because the minute he announced he was running he started getting death threats from all the Nazi/skinhead/racist F**cks who can’t stand to see a black person succeed at anything.
AND YOUR PAL JOHN MCCAIN USED THAT LARGE SECRET SERVICE TEAM AS AN EXCUSE TO LAUGH AT OBAMA AND CALL HIM AN ELITIST!
Get real. If you have such a low opinion of Barack Obama – go vote for McCain. But stop trying to pretend that you have any concern for his or his family’s safety. Or anything else for that matter.
Heh…”personalities”…they got that one right.
Your comment inspired me to relive the horror on youtube. One of the lyrics actually goes (in reference to Karl Rove), “That’s right, he can’t be beat, ’cause he’s so white from his head to his feet.”
don’t have a problem with that.
but blackwater has been known to start the shooting – against unarmed bystanders. i don’t want unaccountable mercenaries operating anywhere.
Don’t ask me! I can’t stand these rethuglians who have taken over Lincoln’s party… The heartless bastards!
I apologize for the bad dreams.
And if they take to the streets, what will be the reaction of the ‘powers that be’?
THEY have plans, money and mercenaries. (And the ‘will’ to use them. Do you think ‘the people’ matter to such as ‘run’ things, today? Why would they care any more tomorrow?)
What have the ‘people’on their side? Truth, justice, compassion, courage, conviction, or would it simply be ‘emotion’ that a salvo of bullets would quickly disperse?
Would you ‘urge’ people into the streets knowing that many would die?
Again, I would like to say that you are correct, but too many Americans are too wedded to their comfort AND haven’t a clue as to what to do when the bullets start flying.
The conventions were a foretaste, Blub, where do you think the cops and military, not to mention Blackwater will be?
On ‘our’ side?
Well, it is my sincerest hope (however audacious it might be)that such a thing as harm to Obama will not occurr, but I am decidely NOT sanquine as to what would happen if ’something’ did.
Well what in the world ever possessed you to think that Obama would even “have” to hire mercenaries like Blackwater in the first place?
ALL presidential candidates, the president and all past presidents and their families are protected by the Secret Service – and have been since the SS was formed. They even announced that he was being protected when they started – and there was quite a bit of buzz in the news at the time because it was so early – but of course they also explained why: “Black Man Running”. Duh!
it is likely Chertoff payback to Mayor Bill White
you may recall a very po’d White and lieutenant reorganized Chertoff’s worthless POD array late Tuesday afternoon and Gasp! had the noive to order Chertoff’s boots on the ground around.
at first i was going to ignore the rest of your comment. but unlike kerry, i think when i’m personally attacked, i ought to stand up for myself.
1. the comment i replied to was about private security – not the secret service.
2. mccain is not my buddy. i have no intention of voting for him or supporting him in any way.
and finally 3:
this is both a personal attack and a lie. you owe me an apology.
The Secret Service first priority (in this instance) is to protect the candidate but they would actually put themselves at increased risk to capture the assailant(s) alive. Makes the ensuing investigation a lot easier if they have somebody to can talk to.
Scarecrow’s up
Palin Tells Fox: “The Economy Is A Mess!” (and It’s FDR’s Fault)
I agree. You are owed an apology.
Wow, who suspected that the hysterical Israel First lobby was so non-partisan?
I guess I’m just more optimistic than that. If that type of monstrous thing happens, I want to live in a country where people would act to do something about it. A country where people just go on with life and do and say nothing while the thugs crack skulls isn’t worth saving. Sorry, it just isn’t.
Basically, Blub, you and I are in complete agreement.
Re hurricane situation: Friends who live in the southern Louisiana area (still trying to get out from under Gustav) said that it took days to get ice and then they didn’t bring enough for everyone. One of my friends was using her truck and her gas money to drive to the next parish over to bring ice back and she and all her neighbors still lost all the food in their freezers and refrigerators. Because of all the bugs and stuff they need mosquito netting but none to be had anywhere. The power was still out as of yesterday.
Then FEMA announced that they were giving the people who already qualified for foodstamps an extra $63 of foodstamps. Anyone who didn’t qualify would get a one-time $200 of foodstamps. WTF?
It is just a huge nightmare, and the whole situation is being ignored…
thanks.
I’m sorry you think that I should apologize to you for thinking you are McCain’s buddy. Every time I come on here and anyone says anything positive about Obama you start in with all the derogatory remarks about him. I know I don’t come here very often, but just once it would be nice to see if you thought that Obama was in ANY way better than McCain. From the content of your posts, it certainly seems to me at least, that you think he is just as bad or in some cases worse than McCain. If that is the case, then just go vote for McCain. You bring up negative stuff about Obama, then when someone tries to defend him, you demand that the other posters provide all kind of links and research to prove their assertions – something that you do not do yourself.
Your comments about him hiring Blackwater and stating that you don’t want his ’security team’ shooting at people seemed to me to be more of the same. There are hundreds of private security companies out there that are not Blackwater. You automatically jumped to the conclusion that if Obama did hire private security it would naturally be the nastiest, worst reputation outfit in the world. So again, an inference (this time) that Obama would be associated with that outfit based upon no evidence whatsoever. My ex-son-in-law works for a security firm that is not Blackwater. They provide security for high-profile people all over the world. They do not shoot first and ask questions later. His company has hundreds of employees and your inference actually insults all of them.
I apologize for your item 3 since I actually don’t know how you feel about Barack Obama or Michelle, Sasha and Malia.
Nerves are frayed and patience is short,
but you deserve an apololgy of some real sort.
Woky talky much too rough
ya don’t deserve dat kinda stuff.
Thanks all, it’s been nice. I’m gone.
Looks like loky chose to walky.
But I hope he/she might return
as mostly I like much his/her talky.
Come on, lokywoky, com on back
for your absence will cause a lack …

“our Ms Maddow otoh, is the top rated MSNBC show !”
That’s great to hear! She’s been my #1 priority for TV viewing since her show began. Here in HI, they moved her up into Tweety’s spot in prime time. Next will she elbow KO to the side?
IMHO she’s done a great job reconceptualizing the news format. Less stupid entertainment stuff, more real news, smartly presented, with “experts” who tend to be younger than on most channels.

“I hope Obama has hired his own security team.”
Interesting lesson from his appearance here in Honolulu– and in my own apt building, where his grandmother lives: Wherever he goes, he’s dealing with not just one security team, but often 3-4 of them, each with its own jurisdiction and territory. There may be
* personal security, who go where he goes
* local (e.g. city) security forces, whose job it is to keep him safe while traveling on local streets
* County, State, or Federal agents, depending on whether he is driving on county, State, or Federal highways
and probably others. For example, if he’s appearing at a public venue to give a speech, that’s a whole nuther crowd.
Each one of these can be fiercely protective of its own turf, to the point that they won’t share information with other security teams until the last minute. Testimony here is that some of the people escorting Obama are mean nasty-looking SOBs that look like they would squash the life out of you in a second if you made the wrong move, without a second’s hesitation, and without any regrets. And they’re not always nice to little old ladies in wheelchairs who might be in the way. These folks set up human corridors for Obama to travel through, and they don’t care who they might be blocking or crowding into a corner for however long it takes for the protected person to get from A to B. They look like Blackwater types, although probably much more disciplined.
Bob in HI
If I were the Congress, I’d get into investigating that particular decision right away…before the election. Seriously. If the DOJ is deciding not to prosecute folks who are out to kill a Presidential candidate then what message does that send to would be conspirators? In fact, if there is evidence that this was a willful decision to encourage folks to assassinate a presidential candidate from an opposition party…well, gee, what will it take to have impeachment back on the table? A dead President-elect?
