Having grotesquely failed in taking seriously the plot by three white-supremacist tweakers to assassinate Barack Obama in Denver, Colorado’s Rove-appointed U.S. Attorney, Troy Eid, is complaining in the Denver Post that the resulting negative coverage is all the fault of anonymous liberal bloggers:
Long before respected mainstream news organizations, including The Denver Post, got so many of their story leads from anonymous Internet scribblers whose veracity and competency cannot by definition be verified.
Eid goes on to contend that "faceless bloggers" are destroying journalistic standards by publishing "wild internet rumors" that journalists then feel compelled to run. And that, you see, is why there were questions about his handling of the tweakers case. Not, you know, because they demonstrated a clear and bizarre double standard in his enforcement of the law.
Well, for what it’s worth, this "faceless blogger" was one of the first bloggers tackling this case. I don’t know to what extent we drove the subsequent reportage, but I do know that these posts generated a great deal of traffic.
And I have never blogged under anything but my own name. As you can see, my mug shot adorns my posts here. I am not faceless or nameless.
I also happen to have the credentials to be raising these questions: I’ve written books on the far right, have covered numerous federal court cases involving the far right, have covered FBI standoffs and have gotten to know a number of both FBI agents and federal prosecutors, and I know how these cases operate. In 2000, my reportage on domestic terrorism for MSNBC won a National Press Club Award for Distinguished Online Journalism.
And yes, I’m a blogger and a journalist, and proud of it.
Troy Eid is going to have to come up with a better excuse than this. Particularly as it becomes clear how badly he’s botched this case. More on that later.

Dear Mr. Eid,
I met Mr. Neiwert at Netroots Nation 08 and I am willing to testify that he does indeed have a face. In fact, it even looks like the one he uses when he blogs.
Jim White
PS I have a face, too, and also blog under my real name (although I’m a scientist by training, not a journalist).
Eid =”s political hack. Nothing more, nothing less.
Wow, don’t tell me there’s another republican running from the responsibility of his decisions and choices!! Wowee.
There’s so many, it’s like shooting wolves from a helicopter.
AS a Denver area resident I generally read the sunday Denver Post and i read Eid’s op ed last sunday. One has to understand that rethugs do not accept blame for anything. You can look at any interview on tv to understand this. If a reporter asks a rethug a question regarding anything about their standardbearer the first word out of their mouth is Obama. Eid does make some points about evidence and what could be proven in court. My ex was an AUSA and I have seen first hand the hoops that they must jump through. I do not appreciate his lashing out those who would raise legitimate questions to which an answer must be forthcoming.

what’s a B/t?
Don’t make me start guessing. *g*
a tip of the faceless blogger’s beret?
I don’t know but if it refers to McCain it could refer that period of his life that was Before Time
Colorado’s Rove-appointed U.S. Attorney, Troy Eid,
…whose own picture makes him look like a NYC mafioso defendant….
a tip of the faceless blogger’s beret?
uh, yeah, that’s gotta be it.
(continues to bite tongue….)
Certain US Attorney’s might want to think about their own potential liabilities (criminal in particular) that might come back to haunt them come January 20 2009.
Just saying.
Well were we wrong about any of the facts is the question? If not that just means the blogs caught the story before the media and reported in accurately. What is wrong with that?
What troubles me is the prosecutor is blaming his mistakes on US, so if we had not made the MSM cover the story the prosecutor would not look so bad? That is his complaint?
Has the prosecutor done anything to fix his mistake like investigating the meth heads to see if they are part of any terror networks like STORMWATCH, the Ayran Nation etc!
I bet if the meth heads were hippes and the Republican convention they and their grandparents would have all had their rights violated er lives investigated.
I bet Homeland security isn’t even tapping the phones of the last twenty people the meth heads called before they were arrested.
I bet that everyone arrested at the GOP convention though is getting listened to them their mama and their grandmama’s are getting listened to.
Thanks for voting for FISA OBAMA
David,
fabulous – had no idea he’d gone public with the WATB act.
Rule #1 Blame The Messenger !
using my real name, I
* spotlighted the stuffing out of each of your posts
* wrote letters to Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News
* called Ken Salazar’s office (blerrggh)
will have to go read his little screed and see if there’s an LTE for me in it somewhere :D
January can not come sooon enough
david, it would seem as though his own complaining might help you shed some light on his depravity
nicely done david
Boo hoo! Po lil’ Troy got his feelings all hurt. Boo hoo.
I give up. I have googled WATB. forgive my McCain Brain. what does it mean?
Yeah Mr EiD I met David and Jim they both have faces…and fingerprints as I’m sure you already know. Nope no names here though:)
Hey, Mike,
Could you update the “print” list at the Spotlight link (at the end of each post) with some contact info for the Denver Post? Or even a link here to their Editorial Page honcho?
This is something we should answer, en masse.
Thanks!

bbl, time to commute home!
I’ll have a post sometime in the next day discussing the evidence and the limitations prosecutors face in such cases.
[And sorry about the typo — fixed it.]

To learn more, visit the CVO and which can be found on the Internet, and click onto the page titled, Cactus Juice Commentaries.
Respectfully Submitted.

EiD had better watch himself because if anything does happen to Obama and it turns out that racist meth heads are the new patsys/Oswalds this season then EiD will get the blame.
EiD will get the blame even if the person is never caught, why because EiD never investigated and proved the meth heads were not part of a larger group.
No Fox News jobs in your future, no corporate board jobs unless they are not afraid of a boycott, no think tank jobs because your rep will be so bad you will discredit Ann Coulter.
But on the plus side I’m sure Henry will invite you to the House.
I thought I was missing something there.
Oh! the things you learn from faceless bloggers! :]
If you don’t investigate then you can’t use FISA to find out if they are terrorists. On the other hand what Prosecutor takes the word of an assassin that yes they were working alone/there are no droids here!
I’m thinking that even under the old rules any judge would give a warrant to spy on the meth heads friends and family.
Eid kept his job in the USAttorney purge carried out by Karl Rove’s minions. Now we know why.
Hippies acting peaceful at GOP convention lets crack heads. Meth heads with guns going after Obama.
They don’t belong to no terrorist group they’re just good ol boys!
I’m thinking that EiD’s last job was the Wassila Meth task force?
Well, I am semi-nameless or perhaps semi-named but definitely faceless. Here is my entry on the Obama assassination plot from my scandals list.
Is the idea here that Eid is pining for the good old days when it was so much easier to bury a story and cover up ineptitude and inappropriate political decisions?
Dugg it!
David,
Thank you for your reporting, even if you are not a face-less, nameless, lunatic blogger.
I write anonymously. I write speculative and science fiction novels. My readers come from all walks of life, and both political parties. I remain anonymous because my political ideology could affect the sale of my books. I already don’t make enough money to feel secure, and I just can’t afford to risk my income by speaking openly about my politics. Having said that, if anybody at Daily Kos (where I express my views) ever asked my my name or to provide a photograph, then I would do so.
David Eid’s failure to take the assassination threat as seriously as it indeed was points to his own gross incompetence. It’s no wonder he would lash out at people he calls nameless and faceless. Those are the only people he can get away with lashing out at. If he referred to the very open and well known bloggers by name, the resulting fallout would be worse than the problems he already has. He owes his frustrations all to himself, though, and deep down inside him somewhere he knows it.
