So yeah, Carly got herself in hot water by saying that John McCain couldn’t run a major company, and tried to rescue herself by saying that none of the candidates could.
How would she know though? Because Carly couldn’t run a major company either. In six years she laid of almost 18,000 workers, lost half the value of the company, paid herself a 10 million dollar bonus for shoving through a merger with Compaq which didn’t work, and was forced out in 2005 for wiretapping her own board members. She then got a nice 42 million dollar severance package for driving the company into the ground.
Carly Fiorinia: Incompetent, but thinks she’s a genius. Yeah, that’s change we can believe in. Is there anyone competent on, or advising the McCain ticket.
Anyone?

Ian, you’re doing triple duty today. All of it great stuff.
ian, your posts today are wonderful – i am learning so much from your posts, even the depressing ones. :)
thank you
McCain’s money quote of the day:
h/t kevvboy at Dkos.
Was it 60 minutes that did a show on her spying on her board and other things?
i think you are correct katymine. she did not come across as a nice person in that expose.
“Carly Fiorinia: Incompetent, but thinks she’s a genius. Yeah, that’s change we can believe in”
I think she reached her ultimate “Peter Principle” today…
Oy…Dummy.
Here’s a link for that quote: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09…..in.html?hp
been trying to dig on that but what I remember is that she claimed the reason they fired her was because she was a woman….. she started with the statistics of how few women are CEO’s ……. so wonder where she got that sexist crap?
Well, Carly has been thrown under the bus…!
Digg it now!
(Sorry–Digg won’t link for me–you can Digg at the top of the page)
Fiorina managed the feat of turning one of the world’s premier electronics engineering companies into a producer of budget PCs and printers. She didn’t bankrupt the company, so I suppose we should count our blessings.
People like Carly Fiorina…are worthless wastes of skin.
I know Carly Simon and you’re no Carly Simon.
Carly really put her foot in her mouth. Which is easier? Running a company into the ground, running an airplane into the ground or running a country into the ground. Carly, McCain and Dubya – all experts, repectively.
here’s the digg
he said that yesterday too.
Accent is properly on “We” and “again”
oh, and I commented on it yesterday when I fist heard it. h/t me.
heh.
That’s OK. McCheese still had Gov. Jane swift to back his play :-)
She’s atrocious.
thanks, suzanne.
it’s probably just the usual problems with my dinosaur computer
Per CNN:
Economic moron who secretly wiretaps and turns everything within reach to shit? Are you sure you’re not talking about Bush?
“The Fundamentals Of Our Economy Are Sound.™”
—John Sidney McCain III, 9/16/08
relax, people. JSMcMIII says it’s going to be OK.
Carly is truly the gift that keeps on giving. And how incompetent is the McCain campaign that keeps trundling her out in front of the cameras? She’s the poster girl for failed CEOs who’ve been ripping off the public for the past twenty years. Imagine if crime were the big issue in the election – they’d have Bernie Kerik out there every night. Keep it up fellas, you’re doing a great job!
“Senator McCain was furious.”
film.
Please tell me there’s film.
there are always those haliburton
re-education campsjails for the disappeared (taking off tin foil bonnet)McCain remembers the last great depression…. lets see…. born 1936….. father in the Navy….. regular paycheck ……never knew what it was like to be unemployed, become homeless, loose their life savings, lived as subsistence farmers to feed themselves…… like many of our families during that time……
Who is buying McCain’s Nine-Eleven style commission to study what went wrong and how to fix it (the fundamentally-strong economy that was set to destruct by design)? Did anyone buy the Nine-Eleven Whitewash commission?
No golden parachutes provided to the crew of McCain Airlines. Hopefully, Carly will be so ticked off she’ll start naming names and telling where the bodies are buried.
McCain’s spokespeople and surrogates are as bad or worse than he is. Fiorina, Tucker Bounds, Michelle Bachman…McCain couldn’t run a Subway franchise in his current state of health much less a large corporation or, God forbid, the country.
Dr Phil on Palin (arggh!)
Like GWB disappeared from my town today. He was supposed to appear at a fundraiser for a local Repug congressional candidate. He decided he had other priotities and went to Ikesville for a photo opp. Sent Laura instead. She has a higher popularity rating, you know.
The funny thing about that is, two years ago the longtime Repug wingnut comgressman was running for reelection. They flew in Bush and Cheney for two separate fundraisers, shortly before the November election. Astute political observers believe that contributed to the Repug wingnut incumbent’s defeat. So this time he didn’t show up—was he uninvited?
I’m surprised he didn’t announce an Economic Czar…! ;-)
I think that one will go down in history along with Gerald Ford’s “WIN” buttons.
Carly can run a company… …into the ground.
Carly’s successor at HP doubled the stock price within two years.
Carly was asleep at the switch.
Reminds me of the Coast Guard Commander in San Franciso, who looked great in uniform and gave nice speeches, but promptly ran her boat aground during annual inspection.
well, if mcnuts wins in nov, he can always punish his golden girl ex CEO by giving her the thankless task of running failed insurance company (and now State Owned Enterprise) AIG
BTW, Ian, I agree with your previous post. The Bush Administration has gone socialist. Unfortunately, it has done so in some kind of apotheosis of the dictum “Privatize gains and socialize losses.” It is amazing what lengths Paulson and Bernanke are willing to go to bailout these murderously greedy institutions in the name of financial stability and yet, and yet without a thoroughgoing re-regulation of the markets to make sure this does not happen again. It’s like they would rather drain the ocean than fix the hole in the side of the ship. Just amazing.
John McCain: Incontinent, but thinks he’s in control. Needs a change.
Did anyone buy the Nine-Eleven Whitewash commission?
Why, certainly. Whatever are you implying?
(my fingers are
revoltinghyp-no-tized by the wonders of all thingscriminalRepublican). Can anybody spot the unnecessary strike-out?
Who thinks that Dinosaur McCain is having second thoughts about having women play these key roles in the Straight Jacket Express.
Ian, apologies for something slightly OT, but this comment of my was deep in the EPU zone on your earlier thread. Thus:
Ian, bustedknuckles, a long time FDLer has an interesting rant at his place, with (to my mind) some good questions. He’s not your style, but, perhaps worth reading in this instance. Best, VG
http://ornerybastard.blogspot……itely.html
Agreed, but he was planning on running against a different foe.
Lemons=drano
I think McCain spells that, ”wimmin”
When you combine this news with Paul Krugman’s words about Phil Gramm today, it sure doesn’t look like there will be many good times ahead if McCain’s in charge of the economy. Gramm pushed legislation that Krugman, among others, thinks led to the crisis we’re in now. My own (admittedly less educated) opinion is that what Gramm did didn’t help, but he had lots of conspirators on his way to trashing the economy.
Gramm, of course, is McCain’s principle economic advisor.
This is great just what is the GOP and Carly going to say if Obama wins and starts naming competent people to run Fannie,Freddie, AIG uh who else do we own outright.
What is Carly going to say if Obama hires competent people at government wages?
I forsee a lot of CEO’s with golden parachutes getting sued. To bad Jack Welch at G.E didn’t hold out longer.
Breaking: McCain announces he will create a 9/11 Commission to investigate nose hair. Is it a threat?
McCain has demonstrated his low regard for women on so many occasions, it seems like they’d all be ready to throttle him. Perhaps what we witnessed was Carly throwing John under the bus.
i’m sure they are there to get the blame
McCain has no principles, and therefore needs no principle advisor.
Gramm is McCain’s principal economic advisor.
actually not trying to be The Spelling Police, there was a point I wanted to make in there somewhere :)
True on both counts.
Loved to have been a fly on the wall when McCain became furious over Fiorina, was it the C word, the B word or both with a lot of other expletives.
and lots and lots of f words. i wonder who he challenged to a fight this time? carly?
She definitely threw the old bastard (and Mustang Sally) under the bus. Maybe she did do it on purpose as you infer. Hell hath no fury…
Game over if THAT made it to youtube. Alas, we can only dream.
I’d hate to be the lobbyist/campaign advisor who recommended giving Carly a position in the campaign
or maybe it was McSame’s idea—thus the anger would be self-directed
I hate Carly with the hate of a thousand suns, and a thousand burned out motherboards.
SAVE YOURSELF — NEVER, NEVER BUY HEWLETT PACKARD (OR COMPAQ) ANYTHING, EVER, EVER!
In the last year and a half, I’ve been thru the nightmare experience of two Hewlett Packard laptops that both burned out in under 6 months.
Although I paid $1,000 for the first fucker (actually more than I’d paid for any computer in 20 years) the HPs were the only computers I’ve ever owned that crapped out under warrantee (and in less than four years.)
But that’s not the worst of it: when I sent first computer back to HP to be repaired I was told I’d have it back in 7-10 days. THREE MONTHS LATER, MY COMPUTER STILL HAD NOT BEEN RETURNED OR REPAIRED.
That’s three months and dozens of calls to HP technical support, begging for my repaired computer back. Begging and then screaming. Finally, a case manager took pity on me and sent a “replacement” laptop, different model — which burned out at the 5 month mark.
A clerk at Circuit City told me that way in the back of a bulletin, in tiny type, HP had finally admitted that several runs of HP laptops had been installed with a defective chip that overheated and burned out the motherboard at about the 6 months mark. “They’ve lost a lot of consumer loyalty over this,” he said. No Shit, Sherlock.
I sent the second defective computer back for repair — and went out and bought a Dell.
I screamed for a case manager from the first day, and actually got the second HP computer back within a couple weeks, but I haven’t even bothered to take it out of the box.
I’d also spent another couple dozen hours with HP tech, having to over and over again reset the HPs to get online: they claiming it was Time Warners problem, and vice versa.
No crap like that with the Dell. The clerk at Circuit City recommended I ebay the refurbished second HP laptop, but I’m reluctant to foist that piece of crap on a stranger for money — I think I’m going to be gifting it for free to a disabled neighbor who can’t afford to buy a computer, but has hours to spend futzing with ‘em. (I’ve given him my last two computers when they got too old, needed too much repair, he brought them back to life for his own use, at least for awhile.)
Carly ran HP into the ground, produced crappy product, and crappy tech support, and nearly drove my freelance business into the ground.
May she have the same effect on the McCain campaign.
It’s funny that the AIG fiasco has overshadowed this…
All of this debt that the Fed has taken in as loans from banks in exchange for T-bills means that now that the Lehman bankruptcy will be giving the market a price on this debt as they sell it off.
That means the Fed can tell the banks that you underpayed us we want more collateral and or our Pick of CEO’s and the Board of Directors.
Never mind the big names just how many banks are borrowing from the Fed total?
Just how many banks do you think will be able to pay the Fed back before Obama’s first year in office?
where is the harriet-cam when we need it…
Perhaps what we witnessed was Carly throwing John under the bus.
Hey, that’s just
Manny being MannyCarly being Carly.Throwing shit under buses is what she does.
Was a bad day for Hog Jowls. Can you believe the photo of McCain in his own tv ad – the one where the camera is looking up from under his neck? Is tha tthe best photo they can do?
Sounds like she should get the Medal of Freedom.
I’m really drawing a blank. All I can think of is Harriet Miers and the Barney-cam and somehow I don’t think either are applicable.
Was a bad day for Hog Jowls.
how’d pork bellies do?
My Compaq laptop burned out after about 8 months of use. They really do suck. After finding out how bad they were, I may never buy another. I definitely won’t until I’ve seen that they are serious about quality again.
jane’s camera of the puma harriet getting tossed out of the meeting…
Yeah, every time I catch a glimpse of McCain’s baggy neck I think, this must be something like what Lieberman saw when he checked John’s bearings.
Ah, thanks for the clarification. I think my gray matter has passed it’s “best by” date.
end of the line upstairs
but I’m reluctant to foist that piece of crap on a stranger for money
there’s a blue fucking million refurbed HP’s on ebay already – they can’t give ‘em away….
So when does America start to run out of money or is Bush going to devalue the Dollar more?
So Carly’s gone, he still has Michelle “makes Plain look sane” Bachman and Nancy Pfotanhauer or whatever her name is, the blonde with the nauseating little Republican smirk while her opponent calls her on her lies.
Speaking of Puma’s…
WTF is that??? First, she married a Rothschild and second, she’s a DNC member…???
WTF is that??? First, she married a Rothschild and second, she’s a DNC member…???
Clinton and Obama both had some rather rich backers. They didn’t raise all that money from small donations, much as they’d like us to think that. In return for those large donations, the donors get access like this. The DNC, DSCC, and DCCC have similar patrons.
Which explains why the Democrats didn’t feel motivated to do much differently when they took power this year.
Please let’s not go there. Mind, images, brain wash, bad headaches…
OMG, ROFL
Have mercy Hugh. I can only roll on the floor just so long before people will begin to think I’ve joined Sarah Palin’s church.
Would you go so far as to say he was hogging the camera?
Were his lips twitching? Would you say he has a lips tick?
She has a spokesman.
She is married to a Rothschild.
She’s a CEO of a holding company with businesses around the world.
She splits her time living in London and New York.
And, she calls Obama an elitist.
WTF is that???
This is a joke, right? C’mon, this is unbelievable.
I liked my former company’s CEO’s take on the HP/Compaq merger – slow motion crash of two garbage trucks.
that said HP is doing some fine research and HP labs has the garage spirit from the original HP.
Carly on the other hand got her reputation from spinning Lucent off from AT&T and then doing a lot of job cuts.
Correction: Fiorina got tossed for being a crap CEO. It was the CEO who followed her (forget the name right now) that got tossed for wiretapping.
.
Before Carly, HP was known for having the very best customer service in the industry and in many cases, the most reliable hardware. She destroyed the HP way and gave the company nothing in return. I despise the woman, and never pass an opportunity to mention what a waste of space she is. Lots of business guys love her, though. Blech.
And if my interpretation is correct, saddled HP with the unwise Compaq merger, retarding it’s recovery for a good long while.
Ah. Carly Fiorina. Darling of Hewlett-Packard. Yes, HP finally fired her ass — but, as you noted, gave her millions in “severence.
I know Americans don’t like to hear this, but American companies aren’t the best in the world. I applied for a job at HP about 10 years ago. Let’s just say they were EXTREMELY inefficient. They lost my resume, asked me to come out there (20 miles from my house) to give them another one. No, it couldn’t be faxed because there were too many attachments, and mailing it just wouldn’t do! It would take too long! They needed it TODAY! Of course, it took them another 2 days to even look at it. By the time they offered me the job, I told them to F off — in a businesslike way, of course. From start to finish, they were VERY sloppy, and not impressive.
And I don’t want to pick on HP too much (even though they were the worst). Almost all corporations I applied at, and worked at (including TRW, CSC, etc.), were pretty lame. And no, I am not whining — none turned me down. I know you will not believe this, but it is true. Despite all its bureaucracy, the State of California was the best place to contract for.
I think we live in Cartoon World- where admired characters are nothing more than absurd exaggerated morphs- i.e. hyper-masculinity, arrogance, pugilism, ignorance, etc.
Carly seems to fit many business ideals of what a female executive should look/sound like… but it’s all cartoon- no content.
(Except, she -unfortunately for herself- nailed it on the head about McCain and Palin!)
I hated what was done to HP- used to be so good.
I never, so far anyway, miss your posts Ian.
Please don’t “burn out” and have to quit writing here (I’ve seen that happen to others).
I learn sooooo much from you and would sorely miss your sound voice of reason!
Thanks for this post. Simple, brilliant, yet the entire Rethug party and mainstream media totally missed it, or neglected to point out the facts!
Why is it that we have such a bunch of incompetent women running around the top of politics such as Fiorina, Clintons, Palin, Pelosi etc. I guess thart can be traced to the equally or more incompetent men at the top except Obama. But we have a systemic decline in the Unites States due, in large part, to a non-existent press.
Fiorina, before she got to HP completely screwed up at Lucent with the Lucent/Phillips joint venture authored by her. It was so bad that it had to be undone. The level of BS in national politics, a la Clintons continues to amaze and confound.
The spin off was a disaster
Correction: Carly Fiorina messed up HP badly, but she wasn’t forced out for wiretapping her own board members. That scandal happened under her successor.
The reason that she was forced out was that the board thought she was doing a crappy job. On the other hand, that same board bears a lot of responsibility for the failures: they approved the Compaq deal, and they cheered Carly on as she proudly gutted the “HP Way” (Hewlett and Packard’s humane, employee-centric management style).
