I hadn’t heard about the GST cut! Wow. That would defintely make a huge difference in the money brought in for everything. I remember my canuck family bitching about the GST and PST being set up and started, but the advantages outweighed the disadvantages by far, in the long run.

Based on what the locals say and her speech at the openin of the Independence Party’s convention, Palin corraled the 20% of the vote that was the Independence (read treasonous separatist)Party thru the work of her husband who coordinated leadership of these scum. The oil companies who had underwritten the Independence Party ran Palin for mayor and when the old guard Republican establishment was at the point of stealin the family silver, Palin ran against the “establishment” Republicans and with the 20-25% Independence Party vote, a majority of Republicans and some disaffected Democrats, she took over in Juneau. For the last 12 months and particularly the last 2 weeks, a great number of those who voted for her as a “reformer” have been pissed off as hell, particularly the way she’s cozied right up ta the oil folks and the fascist neocons in DC.

For some time I have been lookin for a split in the rulin’ oligarchy because if the fascists are gunna lose their grip on the White House it’s gunna be because of a split in the rulin elite. So the split we are now seein’ in the coalition Palin put tagether to gain power in Alaska seems ta be mirrored in the national ruling party…that is, the banks and mortgage industry seem ta be runnin’ as fast as they ken away from the neocons and the oil folks. A while back someone, I think it was Ian Welsh, did a taxonomy of conservatives here. The old “establishment” conservatives, whom I call the paleocons, are the ones who are the stereotypical fat cats. the neocons tend to be the middle class folks who take their religion far too seriously. I’ve always suspected that was a rather uncomfortable coalition, and you’re seeing some evidence of that now, I think.

How much this friction will mean in November is anyone’s guess.

That one, too. TPOTS was written about a decade ago. It’s eerie how much it looks like the world we’re headed toward. Octavia Butler was a black woman, which I think gave her an added insight into what the world is like when the authorities don’t give a crap about your problems. That’s what the authorities are like toward everyone who isn’t rich enough to afford their own security in her novel.

I think that America is a couple of decades away from becoming like the one described in The Handmaid’s Tale. We’re about one really bad day from becoming like TPOTS.

Suzanne, I agree completely. We HAVE to push hard. That said, I live in a small community where men still tell 17-18 year olds that the Army is a good option, that Republicans who are no longer their father’s Republicans are better than the socialist Democrats. And I truly believe that Rove is tapping into that mindset. I’ve lost a few friends this month because I’m no longer able to put up and shut up about their politics. Well, mostly their signs.
Being less than gracious, I said their signs make them look like wankers and tools. My bad.
I think we underestimate the knowledge of the average American at our detriment. We are dealing with people who have been programmed to not think. In fact, people who are PROUD of their ignorance and resent thinking.

Dunno if it’s been discussed here, but the US humanitarian aid to Cuba business is acquiring an odd scent. Two days ago Condi was citing unrelated and tough preconditions to even discussing aid.

A couple of hours ago on NPR news, she was doing a hurt and defensive shtick over their declining US aid (twice), when there were *absolutely no* preconditions.

My nose is twitching (and hers is probably growing). Off to look for NPR links. See you…… eventually.
