As we were discussing in the last thread, the Lehman and other nearing debacles could place attention back on that economy thing McCain doesn’t understand.

The devastation of Ike may also impact the national economy. It certainly isn’t going to be good for Texas.

All Rove is doing is trying to clear the air to allow for more of the same lying. His acknowledgement is somehow supposed to signify that from here on out, the rest will be more true. Although I don’t think rove specified it, the implication was that McCain’s lying was about Obama, not lies about McCain and Palin’s record in particular. Evidence that they will continue to lie about Palin’s record was in play already today with Fiorina on Stephpolous re Palin.

The blatant and steadfast lying about Palin serves to underscore just how cynical McCain’s choice of her was on the sole grounds that she is a woman while having zero to do with fitness or competence to lead. It was a purely political move that has to be hidden on a daily basis because it is becoming abundantly clear that she is in reality the opposite of what McCain claims her to be.

Ultimately boxing himself into serial lying is the end result of McCain’s piss poor judgment in the first place.

Everybody who said we should deregulate the market should not get bailed out we should not compromise their principles and force them to accept our taxpayer money, No! they are too good for that, lets leave them their pride.

This could turn out to be moderately good news politically then. Problem is that the new president is going to have to clean up this mess and that ain’t gonna be easy or pretty.

In her usual way, in her email back to me she didn’t address anything I said, but she did reply, “Well, there will be a new ombudsman next year. I just feel a little bit ill. I just spoke with my sister-in-law. She and my husband’s brother live over in Western Washington. After the discussion about family, I asked her if she was following politics. She told me that I wouldn’t be happy, but she was voting for McCain. I calmly asked her why. Reasons: Guns and Obama is a Muslim. She works in a used bookstore and said that a lot of people coming in are supporting McCain and some were going to vote for Obama, but since Palin came on the ticket they switched, since she is a woman.

She did say that since she didn’t like Bush or Kerry, she didn’t vote for either in the last election. I’m only hoping that I got her to think about not voting even if she can’t vote for Obama.

My husband served 19 years in Germany with the bulk of it in Berlin. I served eight years in Berlin. It is so totally frightening that folks just don’t understand this war stuff. That a VP Candidate casually talks about going to war with Russia is beyond anything I could imagine. I feel like I’m reading a really bad SF book.

She is, by may calculation, one year overdue on her two-year contract. I guess her email means she’s actually leaving!

We slice army spending so future Presidents won’t be able to send us into stupid wars every few decades because the army will be so small.
We invest the money in hybrid cars high speed trains etc and put real people back to work building real stuff instead of passing paper back and forth in Ponzi schemes.
We nationalize healthcare and use the savings to help pay the debt. The insurance companies that survive can just take over AIG’s customers to make up for their lost profits.
This economic crisis is the perfect opportunity to shrink the GOP government and their parasite economy.

Much of that I would agree with (I favor an inheritance tax of 50% on estates over 10 mill and 100% over 50 mill), but I doubt that most of it is politically feasible. Remember that the money and corporate interests will still control most of Washington, despite which party is in power. I do think we will be better off under the Dems, but will still need a huge purge.

We didn’t go much into guns as I wasn’t ready for the argument. I do know Dems have given up on the issue.

I explained Obama is a Christian and she came back with Rev. Wright and why did he say what he did about America. I asked her if she knew Wright served in Vietnam as a corpsman and after returning was the corpsman when President Johnson had his surgery. I reiterated that Obama was a Christian.

Then I told her all McCain and Palin talk about is war. She said well since McCain was a military man it is understandable. She knows I served ten years overseas, so I explained what a president says makes a big difference when you are wearing the US uniform overseas. It can lead to service members being blown up and/or beaten up.

I told her I spent 21-years in the Air Force focusing in on the Soviet Union and any discussion about going to war with them is so absolutely frightening it was beyond belief.

She is very fiscally prudent. They don’t make that much money, but both kids came out of college without debt. The kids did work over the summers to pay for schooling, but the rest came from my BIL and SIS’s wages. I mentioned that we are $500 billion in debt. She came back with neither one will be able to do anything about it; we are stuck forever with this debt. I also mentioned that when Sarah Palin became mayor, the town of Wasilla had no debt and when she left six years later, the town had $20 million in debt. And, mentioned that McCain wants to tax employees for the medical benefits that they receive from their employer.

I finished with my killer argument, which is McCain’s temperament. I explained about how he went after folks two and three years later when they had the guts to challenge him. She didn’t have a response to that.

My hope is she doesn’t choose to cast a vote in the presidential race. Washington State should go for Obama, but… .

So, she’s here to stay. We need to focus on how her choice makes him unpatriotic. Selecting her makes a mockery of his “Country First” theme, already a joke, but still. She is clear evidence that all he cares about is winning the presidency. It doesn’t need to be explained, it stands by itself.

McCain is so beholden to the fundies, he couldn’t pick his own Veep. And the choice they stuck him with is utterly unqualified for the office, and an abuser of power as well. He will be unable to govern as President, as he’ll have to run everything by her and the fundies.

And he is running an immoral campaign, with his lies and hers. No one should be elected president (again) after running an immoral campaign. “Thou shalt not bear false witness”

McCain will announce that his decision to personally authorize his campaign to commence TV ads labeling Obama an “Islamofascistic menace to Christian America” was made reluctantly, and was only made after Obama rejected his offer to hold a series of “town hall” meetings.

I was disturbed by the story of the person who infiltrated the Palin speech yesterday who wrote about all the people in the audience who yelled out “UNDER GOD” when reciting the pledge.

I see McCranky almost lost it on his first day post-Palin campaigning without her. He was at a ‘business round-table’ and the attendees were so few they had trouble filling up the round table. An Obama rally was going on across the street and the Obama fans were chanting “yes we can” and “O-ba-ma” so loudly that they couldn’t hear each other speak. Not that McCranky had anything to say that was worthwhile anyway. They (the businessmen) were probably better off not hearing him.

I think you are right. Couple of things I have seen indicate most of the little bounce McCain got was from energizing the base and most of that is Palin (base still does not like/trust McCain). Somehow I don’t think McMachoNumbNuts is going to like being shown up by his number 2, especially since she is a woman. On the other hand he will grit his teeth and bear it as best he can, since he would sell his mother and children to win this.

He is doing some ‘business roundtables’ and a couple of small, sort-of private fund-raising thingys and then he’s got a couple days off.

John Sidney McCain is demented. I think he is incapable of lying. To lie you need to know that what you are saying is false. He never gives the accuracy of his statements an instant of thought. All he care about is whether is “sound good.” In fact, not only does he not give the truth/falsity of his assertions a moment’s thought, he doesn’t even give the believeability of his assertions a moment’s thought, e.g., when he said that Sarah Palin knew more about energy policy than anyone else in the country. If he gave the matter any consideration, he’d know that nobody would believe that. But he doesn’t care and is incapable of caring. It sounds good and gives him something to say.

And when that incident was all over nobody really cared very much. Nobody said, this blithering old fool is fucking crazy, as is anyone who’d consider voting for him. But McCain’s visibly demented, and it’s crazy to keep pretending otherwise.

Unless… we sent bloggers to events to HarrietCam them and do counts like they did in Alaska at the Women’s Demonstration Against Sarah.

I would like to know why Hillary isn’t attacking Palin more forcefully. First everyone (you know, bloggers, pundits etc) said that it would be natural for Hill to do that because she’s a woman and she’s the one who earned the 18 million cracks etc etc. And we all know that Obama and Biden can’t say a word because every single thing they say is sexist of course.

Now everyone is saying that it’s better for Hill not to attack her and for other people to do that. Who? and Why?

I think the idea is that Hillary attacking Sarah elevates Sarah to Hillary’s level. You’ll see lotsa Claire McGaskill, Barbara Boxer, Patty Murray. But Hillary and Bill are going to be working for Obama, not attacking Palin.

I haven’t heard much from HRC. As someone who voted for her in the primary and have been waiting and expecting her to campaign her heart out for Obama I am very disappointed. Not sure that I could ever vote for her again. It pisses me off that she isn’t doing everything possible because of her own lust for power.

Well, Ferraro was on NPR a week or so ago refusing to say who she was going to vote for for president, and arguing that back in the primaries she was just saying that Obama being black was an advantage because he was getting 95% of the black, and that’s there’s nothing racist about saying that, really!

Well, we’ll see. As Nate over at FiveThirtyEight pointed out, the way campaigns get reported is that if you’re ahead, everything you’re doing is brilliant, but poll numbers aren’t results, votes are. We’re still in the bounce from the Republican Convention, and will be for another week and a half or so (the Dem Convention bounce was negated by the GOP convention immediately after, though that caused the GOP bounce to be smaller than it might have been.) It remains to be seen whether any of this is actually “working” or whether it’s just the common and incorrect assumption that immediate events are what’s causing the movement in the polls.

There is enough blubber on Americans…they don’t need whales…energy by liposuction.

I think the Obama campaign needs to quickly devise a strategy involving more surrogates hitting hard on Palin everywhere she turns. They should be nationally visible, and be able to command at least some attention in the FCM.

Then Obama and Biden and Hillary need to really hit McSame hard on the economy – over and over and over again.

Roll out some ads against McSame on the military (show McCain’s no votes on everything to do with vets and the troops), show a thing where Obama talks about a policy (such as timetable for withdrawal) – and dated footage from over a year ago – then play McSame having a fit – and then Bush announcing the timetable. There are at least a half a dozen of these. “Who’s running the White House?”

Tie McSlime to Phil Gramm and both of them to this meltdown in the banking industry. And do it over and over and over again.
