Michael Scherer at Time has a great find. The McCain campaign has tapped a dean of the Washington lobbying scene and consummate Beltway power broker, William E. Timmons, Sr., to help helm his transition team, along with long-time McCain pal John Lehman, Jr.
While this reversal on a "transition team" is amusing based on the prior inane puffery and McCain posturing, the selection of Timmons raises some intriguing questions of McCain’s judgment. Again.
No question that Timmons is well suited to help with transition, with his years of GOP power-broking and lobbying, he knows who has what fingers in what Beltway pies, especially when you are talking money and power. He certainly speaks the language, from Goldwater and Nixon to Reagan and beyond to today’s K Street crowd.
Timmons is old-school power, and he brings all those connections to the McCain table — for his own and clients’ benefits, though, or for McCain’s? Or both?
Timmons has been greasing the skids for a whole host of special interests for decades, and thus brings a certain "insider smarm" that the Maverocity PR purveyors will have to try to downplay. But can they?
Just take a peek at a partial list of clients for whom Timmons and Company has lobbied just since 2001 according to Implu:
– Unocal (now owned by Chevron)
– American Petroleum Institute
– American Health Care Association
– Lincare
– AT&T
– Freddie Mac
– Centex Corporation
– Cox Enterprises, Inc.
– National Assoc. of Manufacturers
– Asbestos Working Group
– Northrup Grumman
– American Financial Services Assoc.
– The NRA (The National Rifle Association)
— The American Council of Life Insurers
;– Farallon Capital Management, LLC
– Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.
– The Vanguard Group, Inc.
– Primerica Financial Services
– Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc.
Timmons is a Beltway staple – having served as the chief Congressional lobbyist for the Nixon Administration, and served in every Republican Administration since then. He’s also quite an old hand at Washington politics, knows how to work the levers of power…sound like Dick Cheney in terms of ability to work his own agenda into the mix yet?
We all know how well that went for Dick Cheney’s agenda when he headed up the Bush transition team. You have to think McCain would take a more active roll than Bush did, just based on his own insider experience the last few decades.
But the sheer number of power-broker lobbyists in highly placed spots makes you wonder if their ultimate agenda hasn’t been McCain’s own agenda all along. Doesn’t it?
Honestly – Rick Davis? Charlie Black? Phil Gramm? Wayne Berman? And way too many more to even begin to list in a single place. Truly. (Although for a handy visual chart, you can’t beat this from Media Matters. Or this gem from McCain’s Lobbyists.) Especially with yet another revelation that McCain and uber-lobbyist advisor Rick Davis went yacht hopping with suspect clients?
If your object is to buy your way into any meeting in town, these are your guys. But they don’t exactly scream "cleaning up Washington" while they are mucking around with the backroom money, now do they?
If these folk are his closest advisers and have been for years — what, exactly, does that say about McCain other than "he’s one of them."
McCain’s cronies? Really, it’s all in the family for John McCain.
Obama has yet another new ad — at right up top — that hits McCain right in his lobbyist soft spot….strong stuff.

We meet again, Christy!
let’s rumble!
Hey Ann — busy day of researching here. You asked how kindergarten was going in the other thread and I didn’t get a chance to answer — The Peanut absolutely loves it. She’s doing really well. The cutest thing is that she’s started raising her hand if she wants to ask us a question here at home. So adorable!
Kids are such fun! Especially at her age.
Oh that IS adorable! :] she’s on her way to the WH press room. Maybe she can ask McCain about his position on child protection!!!
I wish the “bank lobbyist” could have been more closely tied to enron scams and bank bailouts but that would have muddied the bigger message I suppose. Good ad.
Maybe she can ask McPalin about their policy on age-appropriate sex education.
Am out the door but with a smile now that I have read about the Peanut. Can’t decide who will enjoy kindergarten more, her or her parents. *g*
Ding, ding, ding…I see ATT on that list. “old friends..old friends” HOnestly, if McCain went with someone who was NOT a lobbyist, we’d all fall down dead from surprise. The man is bought, paid for, and delivered.
Honestly, do we really want two cardboard cut outs for the top positions in the US? Are we reduced to propped up democracy?
Lies and race-baiting, bought and paid for by John McCain, premeditated serial liar. Sorry to break it to ya, Carville.
Hey – were not being fair here – the guy who drives the straight BS express is not a lobbyist. /s
Jesus H. Christ on a unicycle! McCain is just blatantly lying…he thinks that this campaign is like an Episode of Monty Pythons “Argument Clinic”.
McCain Denies Palin Asked for Earmarks
Then he says that his ads about Obama – lies about Obama trying to teach sexual intercourse to kindergartners…”they aren’t lies”. So apparently, contra the assertion by James Carville that McCain was too honorable a man to run such scurrilous lies…McCain DID approve them!
Yeah, and the Madame of a brothel isn’t a whore. /s
Just picked her up for the day, as a matter of fact. They are all just so adorable at this age, standing out there waiting for a parent or grandparent, smiling and laughing. Too cute.
She has been chattering on about horizontal, vertical and diagonal today — they were doing lines this week, and she was trying to quiz me while I was driving home. No so easy to do when you are watching the road. *g*
McCain will get away with it because there’s no one to respond.
What a great ad! It looks like Team Obama is introducing several really good ones today. The hypocrisy of McCain’s campaign being run by lobbyists while he rails about “special interests” is just beyond belief.
OT, sort of. Had a scare this morning when our 17 year daughter had severe stomach pain and nausea. After a bit of pondering, we realized she had just taken the first tablet from a recently refilled antibiotic prescription for acne. It turns out the pharmacist had made a mistake and used tablets with double the prescribed dose. After confirming with the doctor’s office that the problem was with the pharmacy, I then immediately filed complaints with the state and with the corporate offices of the pharmacy chain. The really sad part of this story is that in our town of well over 100,000 people, I can find only one pharmacy that is still family owned. You can bet that all our prescriptions will be filled there from now on. The evil greed of high-throughput corporate thinking fuels McCain’s campaign and literally does not care how many bodies are left in its wake.
Fortuantely, my daughter is feeling fine now, but this morning was really scary for her and for us.
Very good ad – I like it.
If I were putting one together, I would try to include maybe three quick clips of McCain saying “there will be more wars”, followed by quotes from fellow Repubs saying that a McCain presidency scares them to death, and topped with a clip of Pat Buchanan saying “John McCain will make Dick Cheney look like Gandhi”.
I *think* it could be squeezed into thirty seconds – if not – make three separate commercials – it’s time for voters to be afraid of McCain/Palin.
Worse, McCain criticized those same earmarks back in 2001. A lie is a terrible thing to skate…
Carly Fiorini could be in charge of outsourcing protection for the fifty nucler plants McShame wants to build – good way to bring North Korea into the world.
We all know how well that went for Dick Cheney’s agenda when he headed up the Bush transition team. You have to think McCain would take a more active roll than Bush did, just based on his own insider experience the last few decades.
This really speaks to me for a coupla reasons.
For me at this point, the choice for Rep. VP comes down to who would be an even more gullible, ask no questions cheerleader than George Bush for the [evil cabal] to put strings and little voices in the ear?
Would it/Will it be any different if the D’s get in?
I’m questioning just how much power these “dicks” think/know they have.
McCain may be too old to be very active.
You are so right on!
OT: a Gina Gershon spoof of Sarah Palin.
In terms of timmons, he really is one of the ultimate Washington insiders. But the big question is, in whose interest would he be pushing: the GOP? McCain’s? That of his firm and corporate clients? All of the above? Would the American public that isn’t connected to Beltway money and power even get a second thought?
These are questions well worth asking of McCain.
They are all just so adorable at this age,
Oh, how I miss that. My son was talking from the moment his eyes focused. Of course, it took a while for all of that to turn into English *g*. He’d look me dead in the eye and let loose with a barrage of Very Important Stuff.
And that boy talked non-stop from sun-up till he fell asleep at night – sometimes right in the middle of a sentence.
What I really miss, though, is that every sentence started with “Dad, ……” *s*
These are okay ads – I actually like the direct-talking Obama ad. But I think the new Planned Parenthood ad is the best.
(C – Peanut is in kindergarten? Have I been reading the Lake for THAT long? Wow. Is your refigerator covered with school drawings and fund-raisers yet?)
Digg it.
OOPS! Wrong thread! Sorry!
The difference between these new Obama ads and the lying ads from the lying liar’s campaign is that Obama’s ads are true. MSM will no doubt lump all of Obama’s true ads onto the fetid pile of McSame lies. It always seems to work that way.
I would like to see an Obama ad that puts the fear of xxx in some of the retired folks with regard to his wanting to privatize Social Security, the same for taxing health care premiums. I’m not at all sure folks understand just how bad his plans are.
This is the age bracket that votes consistently!
The Lobbyist are coming the Lobbyist are coming! The Very best in the K-Street boys to run the Government! Didn’t We JUST have that for the LAST EIGHT years??? I wonder just HOW much money they made ion that time? Can you say CASH COW??
Hey Lurk Digg seems broken here!!
These are questions well worth asking of McCain.
Especially in light of the fact that McCrazy *really* wanted Joe Lieberman for his Veep, but was over-ruled by – well, by just who, exactly?
The McCain campaign is ultimately not being run by McCain.

What part of the pattern is unclear. More war (now Pakistan, Russia his own, Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran)..the millitary/Indistrial stocks are looking better than evah! Tax cuts for corporations and wealthy. And a special bailout of the casinos on wallstreet who are getting corporate welfare. And guess who is slated to pay for all of this??? You the working familiea of America with no health care, no jobs and no homes.
Digg is fine on this end.
Perhaps we can find a computer specialist to lend you a hand.
Well, hell, they won’t even let him speak for the campaign! What does that tell us?
That IS his excuse for all that nasty stuff he says he doesn’t agree with.
I have to say I cannot WAIT for video of McCain on the View with Bawbwa rweprwesenting!
whiner.
:P
I don’t buy it! McCain is responsible for running his own campaign. If he doesn’t it’s no fault but his own. No excuses.
I am watching mosaic – Osama releasing 9/11 anniversary tape soon?
according to al jezeera
I have to say I cannot WAIT for video of McCain on the View with Bawbwa rweprwesenting!
crap – was that today?
I wanted to record it, because I want(ed?) to see McCrazy get a load of Whoopi…
dosido, was that snark or have you really not seen it?
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/…..alin-view/
Not to belittle or underestimate our war hero, but if he were asked the questions, Just Who The Hell Is Pulling The Strings, are we sure he even really knows?
and, yes, where does Joey The Whining Hypocrite fit into the deal?
What are McCain’s, Lieberman’s, Timmons relationship to/with Cheney, Rumsfield, Rove, Rice, You, know, them?
Just saw that Obama is going to be on SNL tomorrow.
Should be fun.
Thanks, no I had not seen it! I like how he fiddles with his tie like WC Fields. Whoopi was really biting ########## and couldn’t even look at him, I notice.
ew’s got
The Meddling Husband May Get A Subpoena
It may have aired yesterday, I think. YSD’s link has the smackdown of Palin. I wish I could see the whole thing eventually.
Thanks again YSD.
Sounds like my 17-year-old at that age. I loved the constant conversation…even moreso when it turned into English.;)
Now now you know better than to suggest that to me… While I was trying to Digg the post. I first went through the submit process and then found there WAS a Duplicate from Thomas Mifflin. Then When I came back to this post there were no Diggs registered on the Digg icon and then ratfood had a DIGG link in his comment which meant that he had also Dugg this post himself thus my comment!! And the DIGG ICON at the top still registers no DIGGS!
Shell Oil shocked! Begins probe.

John McCain criticized earmarks Mayor Sarah Palin requested and now he wants to let her reform ALL of Washington.
Let’s return some common sense to the White House.
Vote for Senator Barack Obama!
