If there were any doubts that the sidekick was stealing the show, they were put to rest when Sarah Palin took off for Alaska with a wave from the tarmac by John McCain.
His crowds suddenly dwindled. The exuberant cheering heard day after day during two weeks of joint appearances went away. And the Republican presidential candidate’s schedule began to resemble the lightness of May instead of the full throttle of September. . . .This was a striking week to see the contrast between McCain and Palin together and the dimmed wattage around the nominee when they are apart. . . .
The lesson from all of this isn’t lost on McCain. Campaigns usually split up their presidential and vice presidential candidates so the ticket can cover more ground, which is what Obama and his running mate, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, are doing. This could be especially important because the late conventions shortened the general-election season.
But the McCain camp has calculated it needs to put him back with his No. 2, and probably keep them together for much of the fall campaign.
Until they are back together, McCain has no rallies and not much going on.
You have to admit, it’s been a clever bait-and-switch — let Barack Obama’s team spend months gearing up for a campaign against John McCain, then say, "Hey! Now you’re running against Sarah Palin… whaddaya think of those apples?"
Of course, the scheme’s success depends largely on Palin riding the perceived success of her convention speech last week all the way through to November 4th. Already, we’ve seen her stumble awkwardly in her first major interview, despite intensive preparation. Meanwhile, Palin’s husband has been subpoenaed in the Troopergate investigate that the national GOP is trying its damnedest to stifle, questions are still bubbling up about her attempt to ban books from the Wasilla library… and who knows what will turn up next, either from research in Alaska or the next time Palin opens her mouth without a memorized script?
Not that they’re nervous or anything, but the McCain camp has already released not one but two ads trying to inoculate Palin against attacks that largely haven’t happened. Because they know if she goes down in flames, so do they.
It’s only been a week since the GOP convention, and her protective shield is already starting to fray. Can it last another seven and a half weeks?

Hey, Swopa! Where’s the picture? Now to read!
No.
They are going to do whatever they can to try to protect her. Let’s just hope with McCain issuing the media his challenge and this whole vetting mess, that the media does its job
That Palin is even considered by so many Americans as a viable candidate speaks volumes to the ignorance of the American public. Apparently things haven gotten bad enough for Americans to wake up and smell the coffee. How many people that had their homes foreclosed be voting for Republicans. How many blue collar Americans that have seen their jobs downsized or outsourced be voting for Republicans. As H.L. Menchen said, “no one ever went broke underestimating the bad taste of the American public.”
It’s a picture of my friend Harvey. What do you mean you can’t see it?!
lol!
The true believers and low information voters aka MFMs will support her no matter what. I see the McCain campaign continuing to throw out everything including the kitchen sink, hoping that enough will stick to Obama or at least confuse the situation to get to the election. McCain can’t quit Palin so I’m hoping they both go down in flames. Still no one ever went broke betting on the stupidity of the electorate.
Beat me to it by this much. LOL
I can’t see it either.
Great post. I am amazed Palin’s Intrade (dropping from race) is still below 10. I think there’s a lag, so I’ll expect to see it start to climb on Monday. If McShame does not replace her by next week or so, them he’s got to ride it out.
Great post, Swopa! And did you also hear that two of McPhallic’s campaign officials/lobbyists lobbied for companies involved with what has been dubbed the Interior Dept.’s sex & drugs for oil scandal?
I don’t know which I will actually enjoy better….
Palin going down or Lieberman?
Yes, I believe I do. Is he a big white rabbit?
Refresh your browser — it’s
fixed nowalways been there!Even protected from the real media, Sarah will gaffe again. The question is, What will the media do when she does?” (It is reported, she will be on Hannity next week.) Does the media care about America at all? Do they care about the truth at all? Are they patriotic at all? We have little reason to be optimistic, but perhaps as bad as things are today, even they will have some pangs of integrity. We will see.
The Palin patina is begining to fade – maybe that is why she had to spend so many working days at home
We need to force Palin out of national politics for good, and we need to do it now. And I think there is blood in the water.
SWOPA~
I LOVE the “Bush Doctrine” portion of the Palin interview; and the heartbeat SFX IS an effective tool to remind us that she would be a “heartbeat” away from the Presidency…however. I think I prefer the one that inserted *crickets* during the close up on Sarah after Charlie asks the big question that Scarecrow used yesterday for a good chuckle. (unable to link to it – FDL is having heebie jeebies, server-wise)
Actually, she will not fall from the Bridge to Nowhere, she will remain there.
Ride what out! So far, they love her. I can’t believe people are buying all these frauds being perpetrated against them. They are eating her up like she’s a new flavor of candy or ice cream. The best we can hope for is that she leaves an after taste and soon. Barnum was right; there is a sucker born every day!
The shine is wearing off – her slide has begun give it a week.
This nauseating charade can’t be maintained for fifty days. No way-no how.
Like most bubbles, economic or political, it isn’t going to end gradually or gently. It will burst suddenly and catastrophically. I think 40 states may fall into the Democratic column.
Anyone know who’s going be on tv sunday
Palin hearts Hillary:
“I think he’s regretting not picking her now, I do. What, what determination, and grit, and even grace through some tough shots that were fired her way — she handled those well,”
Perhaps, Obama has a little more integrity than you and your running mate have, Sarah, and he didn’t make the VP pick based merely on political expediency. And I guess you forgot that you called her “whiny” when that was politically expedient. Stop lying, Sarah. It didn’t work for Hillary either.
Fifty days, hmmmm. One debate, less than half a dozen fixed interviews and a bunch high dollar fundraisers with few church visits thrown in.
the palin patina, that could go down in the political lexicon
Sure hope you’re right! I’ll be waiting at the bottom to pour on some sand.
Slightly OT
Here is a question about judgment. McCain has his infamous ad decrying lipstick on pigs. We know, he knew, what Obama meant.
McCain is seriously asking Americans (a rather privileged lot who are the only ones who get the choice) in selecting the next leader of the free world, based on the use of the word P-I-G. McCain says Obama used the word PIG in a bad way and therefore should not be president of the USA — because of how he used the word pig.
How anyone could vote for someone so condescending is beyond me. McCain is such a pig!
Rove is going to be one busy little bastard trying to keep the wheels on this runaway train.
I hope she falls off the bridge to Washington.
The MSM is clearly not doing it’s job here and calling her incompetent and ill prepared to be the VP. What has come out is more than enough for any editor, to be screaming that she’s not cut out for the job – too dumb.
She’s just too dumb to handle the job. End of story.
Perhaps some repukes who see the light will take out a full page ad and plead for her to back out and be replaced by an adult.
This is more than an embarrassment for the USA. We are increasingly seen around the world as a bunch of idiots who care for cars, sports, loud music, tacky fashions, plastic food and all things shoddy. But now that Wall Street and the “conservatives” have tanked the world economy… who knows what will rise in the future. The fascists are armed and ready.
i can’t wait to hear what Biden says about that.
Wow, what PUMA solidarity. ick ick ick.
Look at what has happened the last three days with one ad after another, one claim after another one interview after another all being debunked by MSM. Individually is one thing but cumulatively
Poor Sarah with an “h”. No one told her that the Bush doctrine was the same as the Alaskan “Busch” doctrine; “Kill a bear before the bear kills you.” – (very old Indian/Eskimo Proverb, circa, 1550. A.D.
The city slicker’s schidt’s and davis forgot to prep the “Pretty, Young, Eager, Sophisticated (looking), Governor with the correct analogy.
If I could die and come back as a completely new being; it would be as an newly, middle aged, moderately, attractive, Christian, white women of the 21st century.
Talk about Cake and Walk. The toddlers’s are yelling; “Dinner’s Ready, O.K, Come up an Eat. I must do a drive-by.
rove, industry and company will reign in the press, they have SOME nerve asking palin some questions
I have a question of my own however, wasn’t palin given the questions before they were asked?
and lieberman was tutering the women, how could she not kno about the bush doctrine?
I suppose mccain is not all too happy with holy joe now, especially since palin takes the title “holy” all for herself
I sure wish those in Congress would get their priorities straight and charge that bastard with inherent contempt. That would take care of him for the rest of the campaign season. Republicans would do it in a heartbeat if the situation was reversed.
I can’t imagine that McCain’s ego isn’t just burning over this. That nasty, bitter, angry, broken old OLD man must really hate the fact that no one give’s a rat about him and they are only coming to check out Palin.
You all do realize what this means? MOST of the people that show up for a McCain/Palin co-rally are the very same people that are literally praying for McCain to win, then “be called to Jesus” so Palin can be President. I wonder how McCain feels about most of the people at his rallys wanting him to die immediately upon being sworn in so Palin can step in and be Jaysus’ President?
that’s a GREAT thought, get that off to conyers and pelosi, while she may not actually want to charge the man I am pretty certain she would like our ticket to win this race, that would insure her seat in power for some time to come
his ego takes a back seat to his ambition, he can think he is playing chess, biding his time till he is the most powerful man on the planet, then he THINKS he can reign these fascists or be their leader
he can’t, he is senile and fragile, but he does not believe it yet
Tonight 20/20 is featuring Sarah Palin
A flip-flop add about McCain should include the footage of him cutting down governors for lack of experience (last year) and then bring up Palin and the fact that she was mayor of a nothing town of 3 or 4 followed by governor of a state with less people in it than one major city in virtually ANY eastern state, and then for only 18 months. Then nail him for being against governors before he was for ‘em.
ot – been away from the blogs for a bit, but just checked the weather (ike). any news from texas pups?
he as against permanent tax give-aways to the wealthy before he was against them, then they contributed to his campaign and now he’s for them
he was against lack of experience till his supporters insisted he choose the most inexperienced candidate for vice president in this nations history, mccain will at the same time be the oldest president ever elected to his first term in office
oh, the list goes on and on I suppose
Looks like KO and Rachel will air tonight based on the promos.
Betsy! Be careful with your words.
Are you safe yet?
palin admits she’s been lying, this is the lead right now at think progress;
tex betsy is in texas?
I thought she was betsy famous for texting
be safe betsy, safe…K?
I hope that if Stephanopolis is moderating the staff has its pants legs rolled up cause it is going to get pretty deep in there
Everyone’s seen the picture(currently on yahoo) of the recently deceased guy from Puerto Rico that had his last wish granted allowing him to be standing up at his own wake.
How about someone putting McSame and him together in a nice collage. Just a thought.
Hi Selise,
Seems like only yesterday….
Time is very fragile these days.
There are nineteen cities larger population wise than Alaska. # 20 is equivalent size
Oh, yes, she’s from Texas.
Or, are you snarking me?
the idiocy goes on and on
Fixed it for you
No. Damn. Way.
the metaphoric bridge to the white house!
all tex pups seem safe and accounted for. but the wind and rain from the storm won’t reach any of the ones i know of until midnight. first greenwarrior, then me and yellowdog jim and wangdangdoodle and blue texan. then gnome de plume and cbl2.
i think. from the last map i saw.
Pardon me, where are my manners.
G’evenin’s pups…good to be back.
She’s gonna implode.
Ian has a new post upstairs for us all to enjoy.
Last week, the betting right here was that she wouldn’t last the week– in fact, her withdrawal was pegged for (last) Friday evening. So she has already shown more staying power than many folks thought.
Of course, now that Alaska is over-run with Lower 48-ers telling everyone to STFU, and doing their best to bury public records behind Stone Walls, we can look to the Bush-Cheney regime’s survival in the face of brazenly illegal behavior for the script to expect. Hey, it has worked so far for Bush and Cheney, why not for Palin?
Does Palin’s opposition include a junior clone of Nancy Pelosi who will take any real investigation off the table until next year?
I…will…refrain…from…writing…anything…more…about…Nancy…Pelosi!
G-A-A-A-A-H-H-H!
Bob in HI
Hi Bob…Howz it going?
I was snarking myself demi, I know she is from texas and tried to put a smile on her face
it was yesterday – but ike was bearing down on texas then.
How much you wanna bet Palin announces that she needs to spend more time with her family before her “debate” with Biden? Can McLame’s campaign find its legs before then?
Bob in HI
I am not sure that any one is really getting a handle on the extent of palins gaffe on Gibson’s question on the Bush doctrine. She dealt with terrorists in her answer – the shrub doctrine deals with NATIONS. dah
News coverage is things are already bad/water surge in Galveston…storm will come ashore during the night/early in the morning.
Not too bad, except that I nearly got heartburn thinking about
traitorPelosi *g*Bob in HI
Swopa:
That’s the game plan. It’s what Mike Murphy and co. used to get Derr Governator elected during the recall election.
Maximize showing the product (candidate) in front of friendly partisan faces at staged and scripted events
and
Minimize the product (candidate) from giving spontaneous answers to unscripted questions at nonstaged events
I don’t think it will matter. The American Idol crowd doesn’t know what the Bush Doctrine is and doesn’t care. They also don’t care whether or not she knows it. Since they don’t it can’t be that important.
Never overestimate the intelligence of the American public. She keeps whistling her dog whistle and that’s what most of them care about. The others are going to find themselves in the middle of some kind of voter suppression scheme.
I keep thinking back to the debates with W and Kerry. Kerry most certainly had a better grasp on everything, but the refs—the owned and operated press called it loudly for W. In some respects some of the press is starting to crack, but my guess is that their corporate owners will get them back on the right page.
JMO, YMMV.
I don’t think Rove can save the husband, once the lights get brighter on him.
Toddy Palin is the linchpin . . . he’s the business man, she’s just the public figure elected to make their fortune hunting legal.
After all, they BOTH had Ted Stevens to learn from . . . .
Once Toddy’s dealings are exposed to light . . . it’s by by baby.
Do the rich celebrity corporate media editors, news readers and “pundits” care about America? No, they care about their celebrity hood and wealth. It’s all a game to them. They have no shame or integrity yet Americans still think they have a “free press.” Another manufactured myth that is belied by the reality.
If the American People are willing to allow the slandering and lies of the McSame camp to
continue without any retribution they would have just handed the Republicans a strategy that
will NEVER be ignored …
Think about it … If McSame wins this election without producing any substantial ads about
his policies and just goes on making up libel about his opponent and other issues that have
nothing to do with our current situation as a Nation in Need, WHAT is to stop the GOP from
using these same tactics in FUTURE elections … ?
If we the American population cause enough uproar about these Tactics, we will be doing
ourselves a favor because as Sen. Obama said, this election IS about US. This is No American
Idol contest where the winner goes on to BENEFIT from winning. If Obama loses he goes back to
the Senate. If McSame loses he goes back to his 7 houses. If the American Population lose we go
back to a guaranteed 8-16 years of GOP Policies that have been proven to be a FAILURE …
It is time for the People who have the most to lose in the Election to stand up say we NEED
more Intelligent discourse in our Election Process … It is time for us to show that we the
American People indeed CARE about our country and are willing to disregard ALL the libel being
perpetuated from the McSame camp and VOTE for the policies we see BEST to Improve the Condition
of Our Country …
It is time to VOTE for REAL CHANGE …
Democrats ‘08 …
Why is it that people think that there is going to be one event that’s going to change the whole dynamic of the race? Palin is not going to drop out, voluntarily or otherwise, the debates will not be the “game changer”, and as much as I’d like to see McSame explode in a fit of rage, it’s not likely to happen. People just have to get out their, knock on more doors, make more telephone calls, register more voters, write more letters to the editor, and engage their friends, family and colleagues.
Yes, I’ve been thinking lately [as the particularly vicious and clearly Rove-driven ads multiply], that we have Nancy & Harry to thank for this. Their cowardice has allowed Rove & his ilk to survive to attack our candidate.
Hi pups– from southwest of TexBetsy and Gnome and Greenwarrior – we’re now looking mostly at wind, it seems, and some rain, but the track appears to be farther east of us than it first appeared. I’m a little concerned, but will just have to wait til morning. Pix from Galveston and Houston are a bit frightening-can’t believ people staying on Galveston Island!
OT: Bob, one of Obama’s campaign folks is coming to Maui next week, and there’s a meeting with him. Any action on Oahu?
And PS, if/when I come over to Oahu, maybe we can touch base.
We’re on a Road to Nowhere, but it’s alright.
Sorry pookie!
John McCain implied that Obama called Sarah Palin a pig.
How can we trust John McCain to be President when he doesn’t even understand that the “lipstick on a pig” comment referred to McCain’s warmed-over Bush policies?
Maybe McCain could Google it on the Internet but he doesn’t use computers and doesn’t understand the Internet.
It’s time for a new leader. It’s time for a Change.
Vote for Barack Obama to get America back on track to Greatness!
Do they care that she required rape victims in Alaska to pay for the investigation? Do they care that she’s lied about several things? Do they care that she doesn’t know what the Vice President does?
After 8 years of George W. Bush it’s about time to put an intelligent person into the Presidency.
That person is Senator Barack Obama.
When Sarah Palin gave her acceptance speech. She made reference to
” what the difference between a pit bull and a hockey-mom is? Lipstick “.
She left out the specific most important fact in that.
Is the lipstick on the tail end or the snout end ?? ?
