Rich man John Sidney McCain III is on my teevee blathering about service. He sounds feeble and confused, not able to think past the next thing he believes you want to hear. He is coming off as someone who has a very weak grasp of the facts, doesn’t really care and is completely without principle.
And old.
Update: Okay the snore was funny. I’ll give him that.
Update II: Obama on his home turf, talking about his own background of community service is a lot more compelling.

About Firedoglake
“There are so many ways to serve”
“When we were losing pilots we had to increase the incentives”
“You have to be careful that they are not serving for the money”
Speaking of Obama’s three-and-a-half-billion-dollar national service proposal, JSM3 sez, “I’d be glad to spend money.”
That’ll go over well with the Club for Growth.
Who is this moderator guy? Who asked if McCain would ask Obama to serve in his Cabinet?
Gramps just said there are so many members of the Cabinet now that the Cabinet never meets.
Factcheck, anyone?
Of course McCain respects community organizers but he did not do my town hall meetings.
so I’m listening to cbs radio news on the car, MINGUH
they have the NERVE to put on john bolton AFTER they list his MANY titles and achievements
bolton goes on to have the NERVE to say we are SAFER because we attacked Iraq
SAFER!
and of COURSE he talks about going to war against north korea and Iran to KEEP US SAFE
and cbs has NO “rebuttal”, they just let this treasonous war criminal spew his blather
GAWD
TIME Managing Editor Rick Stengel.
Apparently, John McCain’s campaign wouldn’t have run all these lying ads if only Barack Obama had agreed to appear at Town Hall meetings with him, like JFK and Barry Goldwater had agreed to do.
Talking now about all the incredible responsibilities of small-town mayors, especially compared to his own job in Washington, divorced from the people.
McCrazy blames the dissing of “community organizers” at the RNC on Obama.
(checking Pepsi to see if someone has slipped something in it)
When McCain talks about cabinet members, he’s probably referring to his pecker file.
I know Christy and Jane are trying to keep this a clean site but I am going over the edge by saying McCain is a fusing asing hole.
What is this bullshit about “if he had appeared at town hall meetings it wouldn’t be this way”.?
Greets this idea of Ted Kennedy returning to Washington in January with mixed emotions.
Nice.
Gee, the mods did not catch me
And pig lips was “responding” to the criticism leveled at her for being mayor of May-fucking-berry.
Sounds like he doesn’t actually wish TK was dead, just held in permanent detention.
Gee. Kennedy’s life is not of concern to the fushing as.. McCain
Very important to inherit zero debt, and leave the 6,000 person town with $22 million in debt…$15 million of which is for a sports center built on land with disputed title.
That and considering which books to burn is time-and-half right there…
thanks – missed that while my head was spinning from the first part *g*
Tis why we need to elect round earthers.. less edges. /s
I hate to say it, but he sounds passing cogent. He isn’t saying anything I believe or would agree with, but he’s doing well enough to not disqualify himself.
His handlers have obviously said to make “definitive” answers to the question. Their is a “yes”….but; or a “no”…and…
One of the knocks on Obama is that he thinks as he speaks. He does the “umm” to gain time to cogitate. I think William Jefferson Clinton was probably the best at this; but I don’t mind that Obama is a little more introspective. But it does break up the lofty speaking style.
McCain’s handlers seem to be drawing as stark a contrast to that fact as possible.
Shorter McSame: OMG gubmint SUXXX!!!!!
Is he saying ’serves Obama right for not agreeing to appear with me at town hall meetings’………
Wow, McCain told a joke that didn’t denigrate women.
“Our economy is broken.”
Wow! He’s actually awake!
TPM just put up a video of Palin blowing herself up during the interview on ABC. Apparently she can’t learn foreign policy in three days…
what was The Ghoul responding to, I wonder, as he giggled insanely at “community organizer”?
Favors bringing people from countries that hate us here for education and training so that they can return home, and hate us less.
Yea, great people come here and go back and become leaders. Diem comes to mind.
That’s a reworking of a line from one of his ads.
ooooh, 9/11 is a “special day,” per Judy Woodruff. Maybe there will be presents?
haven’t seen it yet – but heard Pat Buchanadana saying that she’s being schooled in “neo-con foreign policy”.
9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11 9/11
Holy War with Russia!
He cannot pronounce unalienable.. didn’t even try today. Just skipped it altogether.
did the old man just say that we’re better because we understand what it means to be equal??? huh?
damn – you posted that before it ever came across my teevee – forkin’ Indiana – takes longer for news to get here….
I swear to god they shoot him with a speedball before these forums.
He nearly sounds reasonable, if it weren’t for his actual record…
Believes in American exceptionalism.
I notice he’s sitting down. Is there a donut cushion?
shiny new talking point – saw Jane’s good friend Pool Boy Van de Hei trot that out earlier today
isn’t that something? I couldn’t believe he said that. even if it’s what most people believe.
He continues to dare Obama to share the stage.
I hate to say it, but he sounds passing cogent.
Yep – I think this is McCrazy at his best.
And Obama is gonna blow him away here in a bit.
Must be or he would sound muffled.
Wow, if you google Frisco Speedball the 1st hit is the Whitehouse?
Has anyone seen Lieberman tonight?
He did it again.
Talking really fast now as the stuff hits his internal organs.
I have seen this behavior before, just sayin’
Are you implying we are hanging around under rocks?
McShame keeps flogging the town hall thing. He need to latch onto a celebrity, whether it is his VP or Obama. He knows it. Sad.
It’s very hard to me not to tune out after he says more than ten words. I just tune that monotone out. It isn’t that his voice is annoying (like hojo). It’s just so boring. Except when he starts talking about the gates of hell. that wakes me up.
LOL
Where you been, the ballyard?
He really does know how to fillibuster the next question with hot air.
wondering if Obama is gonna get the same set of softball questions for his turn….
Was listening to the radio. Did not know that was a snore.
Actually I laughed when he said Congress’s approval rating was at 9, mostly family and paid staff.
I think we need to make DENYING America really think about having a “theocracy” from Palin with Dobson behind, and not a constitutional democracy. People so distracted by her celebrity … as the theocrats grab hold of the rug beneath America and prepare to pull even more than they have been.
Just wondering if Lieberman was under McCain’s.
correction: that’s James Pool Boy Van de Hei
he’s a serious journamalist after all :D
group hug
Because
he’s solid
as a rock rock rock
I bought the biggest package available from Obama’s website. (bumper stickers, pins, stickers, yard signs, etc.) I take them with me wherever I go, and give them to everyone. The grocery clerk, the post officer, the bank clerk, etc. etc. They love it. People have had ENOUGH!
ah commercial so they can fetch a dry cushion.
Obama wins the applause-o-meter….
Donavan on the commercial,
Catch the Wind
damn
and more sprinkles
He did ok. He didn’t change my mind, but I’m paying a little bit of attention. The green card warriors bit at the end was almost missed–I think the shock treatment kicked in just in time because it was a killer story driving home the “Exceptional America” angle.
It’s a solid argument for narrow minded people. Problem is, that population is nearly half of America (and that’s rather exceptional, I would say).
Got any xtra Vets for Obama? They are a bitch to get.
So, that’s why they call him McStain.
What is the Nation of Service Forum?
I wonder if the McCain campaign specifically requested he sit with his good side facing the camera?
where do you live again Loo Hoo?
I live in the Bay Area and SF is safe enough, and there are Obama signs where I live, but enough McCain signs to know it’s like walking a land minefield. I don’t want McFlamsters yelling GET OFF MY LAWN!!!
Hit it out of the park, Barack!
http://bethechangeinc.org/servicenation/splash
I saw a particularly lovely Obama yard sign today – almost directly across the street from the (Repub) Governor’s Mansion…
Moderator: 9/11 9/11 9/11?
Obama: 9/11
The pettiness was set aside — but picked right up again by the occupant of the White House.
Naw, off day, playing the Yankess tomorrow in NY. Was tryin’ to catch up on some of the other threads, got hung up looking for a 97 interview Fisk did with bin Laden, military suicide rates, couple other things. Kid’s been busy.
Obama talking about the spirit after 911, the volunteerism, setting aside petty and partisan bickering, the goodwill throughout the world. How to honor those who died, every day in the way we conduct our civic life?
Yeah, to paraphrase a great American women, Ann Richards, McSame is the kind of guy who was born on third base and thought he hit a triple. Legacy at the Naval Academy and finished at the bottom of his class. Hoping the “next generation” sends him on his long deserved retirement. McStain and Bush can sit on rockers reminiscing on the good old days when they almost completed their fascist coup.
It was the entire rationale for the forum, should they have not mention it?
Jack Sprat could eat not fat…
He needs uppers.
She the down
And between the two and both of them,
They finally got to town.
yes, the “honorable” face. Not the Voldemort side.
McCain said busy people just get busier. Squid insight.
This is Baltimore?
I like it when he reminds us that Bush told us to shop. He puts a dismissive emphasis on the word shop when he says it.
Anybody see churchlady’s interview with Charlie Gibson? Saw from the Huff Post that she was a disaster, typical Republican.
He really can’t unless he calls McSame a liar and I don’t think he will but for those Hill fans neither would she.
I’m sure that’s just what McStains wife did.
That whoop from the audience kind of startled me. enthusiasm for domestic energy
dammit – Obama is filibustering himself again….
Bong hits before the show.
link
says they are “in stock”
doing some googling, as a few months back, there were online downloads you could actually go to Kinko’s and other places to get them printed
Does this help?
yeah, keep it punchy
ah, party in the back room…
Woodruff: “Can you be very specific? What exactly would you do? How exactly would you do that? We have less than a minute left.”
Amazing distillation of what’s wrong with our political discourse.
Thanks, seen that. It looks like it belongs at the WWII Memorial in DC.
commercial break to remind you all that you are the Best Fricking Livebloggers on the fricking Planet!!
Rich asshole insight.
I thought that was just someone seeing McCain without his makeup. (And yes, he DOES plaster it on like a trollop…)
Switching back from Rutgers-UNC and the Gibson interview, I missed McInsane.
Keel haul em.
I don’t have any. I would be willing to go to the hospital on Camp Pendleton and Balboa in San Diego.
It was a lot worse than the transcript.
It was what you might expect from an inflatable VP candidate. ABC is going to parcel it out over the next day or so. Gibson actually was not as bad as I expected.
PIP is the answer Carolina 17 Rutgers 6, 3:24 in the half.
My friend saw McCain campers passing out flyers on Manhattan upper east side this week. That was startling to here.
I’m selling my rice burner and I was amazed I was able to peel the one I have off and put it on the heavy chevy.
Well said!
Rich asshole insight.
In McCain’s case, wouldn’t that be “outsight”?
Takin’ their dough away hurts more.
ROFLMAO. now that’s sexist, but skillfully done.
Raven,
here is downloads link

The usual droning, except that he added exceptionalism to the stupid soundbites we can use against him.
Oxymoron:
rich asshole

How do dey do dat! thx
FYI – when during answer to question regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions, couldn’t help but note that Palin pronounces it NUK-U-LER.
My Rethug boss was talking about an inflatable Sarah doll complete with “accessories” today. His equally Rethug wife didn’t bat an eye. Took me by surprise.
couldn’t help but note that Palin pronounces it NUK-U-LER.
fast learner, aren’t she?
Brain bleach, please. And I read that just as Obama was talking about Bush getting it right on something.
she’s a regular Eve Harrington…
“Tonight is not a night to draw contrast with Mr. McCain”…but tell us some more crap that speaks to exactly what we just heard from him so we don’t get too far ahead of McCains talking points.
ack!
Barack is doing much better that he did with Pastor Rick. I think his heart is really in this public service thing, in a way McCain’s is not (except for military), and it shows.
When I first come dis country I couldn’t spell nuk-u-ler physicist, now I are one.
Foreign Policy 101 in 3 days, too!
Word on the street has it that Barbie is promising a hand jo- for every male that votes for her and Gramps. Not sure what she is promising women. It’s certainly not equal rights.
McSFB’s idea of public service is everyone below the $5M/annum line working 12 hours a day at minimum wage and drinking a lot of Budweiser.
When I first come dis country I couldn’t spell nuk-u-ler physicist, now I are one.
Yoo two?
I do not like this “make the army and marine corps” bigger stuff.
How about we do less around the world, instead?
Can she change hands and gain a stroke?
I R 1 2.
Foreign Policy 101 in 3 days, too!
Neo-con foreign policy is quite simple, really.
We are superior to everyone, everywhere, and if you don’t agree – watch this!!
(and when we’re through fucking you up, you’d better show proper gratitude, by gawd)
I found out today that my best friend and her husband have finally turned on McCain. I got sick or arguing with her and pointed her to the DAV website that evaluated McCain’s votes on vet issues at 20% out of 100. Obama was listed at 80%. My friends were horrified, and started doing a bit more research. As my friend said to me less than an hour ago, “We took him at his word that he supported military families, but he didn’t even vote for the new GI bill!” They will be voting for Obama. It only took 6 months. I know it is a little victory, but I have been savoring it while I watched McCain blather on about service tonight. Made me less nauseous.
Yea, that would be a great theme for his campaign wouldn’t it?
I’m sure ABC will say that Charlie Gibson didn’t pull any punches. Hard hitting, insightful, probing!!! What they won’t tell you is that after the “interview” Sarah made him pick up the marshmallows from the floor.
Great job!
Maybe they will give us all uniforms.
Know how you can tell a redneck is about to commit suicide?
“Hey, y’all, watch ‘is!”
Ought, oh, he’s proposing that people take over for Blackwater and Haliburton in terms of foreign service.
As Mr. Burns would say, “EXCELLLLENT”
oops, Obama just said “expeditionary”.
That should have turned all Repub teevee’s off. Too many damn syllables.
I agree. The Dem’s support for a larger military was driven by the assumption that 100,000 or more would be pinned down in Iraq indefinitely. It was an implicit admission that they either couldn’t or didn’t want to change that.
Congratulations! Well done. You had the advantage of talking with people who were willing to educate themselves to the facts. That is rare, but it was fantastic that you were there to provide the impetus. Again, well done!
Great!
Ask them tomorrow how many other military supporters of McCain they’ve talked to. Surely they want to spread the word, now that their eyes have been opened….
best comment today
Whoa boy, “one of the great things about this campaign is that John has been able to share his story”!
Nah, that’s a military term, Repugs know that one from reading all those Tom Clancy novels.
Yea, they gave us the AEF once upon a time in the Land of the Morning Calm.
He let the snake’s belittling his “community organizer” slide.
Urban Gorilla at 148
Trust me, I wasn’t convinced they could be educated. They were positive I didn’t know what I was talking about because I wasn’t from the “warrior class.” They bought McCain’s “Service Honor Country,” line hook and sinker. If the DAV itself hadn’t ratted McCain out, they would still be voting for him. My friend’s husband is a disabled Vietnam vet. He just kept repeating “I can’t believe voted against the GI bill.” over and over. They feel personally betrayed by McCain’s behavior.
He let the snake’s belittling his “community organizer” slide.
I’m getting more than a little bit
disappointed*pissed* at his continual praise of the McPalin freak show….And the Naval Expeditionary Force to Cuba in 62. Two weeks of wandering around Gitmo and riding some excellent Arabian horses. Damn, it was rough.
I agree. What is it with all this praise the other guy shit? Goddamnit, kick him in the balls, figuratively speaking, of course.
Obama needs to get those very same foreclosure lists that the GOP is going to use to disenfranchise people. He needs to get every one of his campaign offices nationwide to prepare for a WEEKEND of canvassing in the neighborhoods affected…and to find those who are about to be disenfranchised.
Then he needs to open it all with a big speech on this issue in an area in a swing state where the GOP is doing this crap. Obama can use this as a platform to talk about patriotism, the economy, and how the McCain campaign is now pumping millions of dollars in the effort to strip Americans from the right to vote!
Have Biden in go out to another State, and the Clintons in others, Michelle in yet another- then swing out registrars and canvassers into the neighborhoods of Florida, Michigan, Virginia, Texas, Ohio, and elsewhere talking to people whose homes are threatened with foreclosure…or whose neighbors may be stripped of their voting rights. Warn them of the efforts that are going to take place at their precincts, give them contact numbers if the see “vote challengers” show up. Enlist their help.
Make this the biggest miscalculation that the GOP ever made. Americans like to live insulated lives…and rarely get excited unless they or their neighbors are impacted by the government. It’s why the VietNam war was only strongly opposed once college kids started being drafted. People saw their own kids, or their neighbors, swept away to fight in a war that was irrational. In the same way, voter “caging” was something that could ignored if it happened in minority neighborhoods…but many of these areas hit with foreclosure “cancers” are in erstwhile Republican strongholds. People were already associating the foreclosure crisis with BUSH…but McCain was thought to be a “Mav’rick” and thus (perhaps) many were considering him.
But this whole caging stuff would show just how linked McCain and Bush actually are. And that McCain is simply part of the same old GOP system.
Obama can kill McCain’s “Palin momentum” and actually turn it on in the swing States and areas where independents and Republicans are being hit hard financially.
Dancin’ Dave Gregory sees little difference between the candidates on the issues.
gee, I can’t *wait* for his Election Night coverage….
He’s too fuckin’ classy. Perls before swine…with or without the lipstick.
They are having a difficult time analyzing this particular event, given its goodwill and service orientation. They’d all rather talk about lipstick/pigs, and David Gregory laughed when he almost said so.
Where is Keith? I thought he and Matthews were going to ‘comment’.
I would not be surprised if Keith took the day off. He lost at least three friends, iirc.
The policies of George W. Bush and John McCain’s adviser Phil Gramm have almost ground it to a halt, but it’s still moving along. We need new energy and new direction to get it up off the ground and running at full speed.
Nah, that’s just her way of screwing up the candidate by applying imaginary pressure.
I suspect that after today Obama should watch & listen to Bill Clinton’s style and utilize some of that. He needs to become a bit smoother and mix some light humor in with his articulation of ideas. No more frowning and stammering, just smoooooth, like ridin’ a nice gentle wave.
You can’t expect a man to see something he’s paid money to ignore.
