It’s beginning to look like a pattern of behavior for abusing a position of power to settle personal grudges, isn’t it? Via Newsweek:
Court records obtained by NEWSWEEK show that during the course of divorce hearings three years ago, Judge John Suddock heard testimony from an official of the Alaska State Troopers’ union about how Sarah Palin—then a private citizen—and members of her family, including her father and daughter, lodged up to a dozen complaints against Wooten with the state police. The union official told the judge that he had never before been asked to appear as a divorce-case witness, that the union believed family complaints against Wooten were "not job-related," and that Wooten was being "harassed" by Palin and other family members.
Court documents show that Judge Suddock was disturbed by the alleged attacks by Palin and her family members on Wooten’s behavior and character. "Disparaging will not be tolerated—it is a form of child abuse," the judge told a settlement hearing in October 2005, according to typed notes of the proceedings. The judge added: "Relatives cannot disparage either. If occurs [sic] the parent needs to set boundaries for their relatives."…
At the heart of the continuing "Troopergate" flap is evidence that despite Judge Suddock’s warnings back in 2005 and 2006, Palin and her husband continued to make disparaging allegations against Wooten, even after she went to the statehouse. During her first security briefing with a representative of the state police, Palin and Todd were both asked whether they knew of any potential physical threats against them, according to a deposition taken from one of Palin’s top aides following her election in Nov. 2006. Both said the only threat they were aware of was posed by Wooten.
The Palins later raised allegations about Wooten with public-safety chief Monegan…
No idea what the underlying reasons for divorce were, but it is a huge concern that the family court judge warned Palin’s family — repeatedly — to stop making unfounded accusations and trying to poison the well about Wooten. Judges only put material like that on the record where they perceive a real and present problem — and those warnings could not have been more clear.
And yet Palin continued well after those multiple warnings in her first meetings with the head of the AK state police and the public safety chief after she was elected governor. Seems to me that she was fairly single-minded in her intent to continue with multiple people in authority over her former brother-in-law, despite a judge’s order to cease and desist.
My number one rule with clients going through family cases was this: the children have to come first. You can be angry and hurt, but never, ever put the kids in the middle. And it wasn’t just my rule — WV law says the interests of the child are paramount.
There are few things that send me through the roof like people in a custody battle using their children as pawns to exact revenge on their soon-to-be-ex. In my legal practice, I’ve served as guardian ad litem for children, counsel for parties in these cases, and as both a mediator and arbitrator on occasion as well.
The most consistent statement out of the mouths of children caught in the emotional turmoil was this: "I love my mom and my dad. Why can’t they both see that? Why are they trying to make me choose — it hurts."
There are certainly individuals who are abusive, and ought not have unsupervised visitations with their children. I’ve helped clients get away from relationships where their lives and the lives of their children were repeatedly threatened. I’ve litigated countless applications for restraining orders, helped drag suitcases up the stairs of the local women’s shelter. I have hugged a child clutching a teddy bear and sobbing into my shoulder, terrified that whatever parent was identified as the one to live with, the other one would stop loving the child. You name it.
But then there are the cases where one parent rushed to file for a restraining order, not because s/he was threatened but because it gave her/him temporary custody as a tactical advantage and prevented the restrained party from seeing the children as punishment. (AK law appears to allow for this, too.) The clients whose mothers would call to tell me what "that asshole did this time." (Note to adults in the audience: if you are divorcing and having your mother phone your attorney, you have bigger problems than the divorce. Just saying.) People who were willing to lie to the court under oath, and bring in friends and family to do the same — whatever it took to get custody or alimony or whatever else would screw over the other side.
The bottom line: people who are abused deserve every possible protection, and their children more so.
People who cry wolf just to get even with the other side? They are liars and cheats. They gum up the court docket, stealing valuable time from real abuse situations which need emergency hearings, and they break the law by making false statements in testimony. And this is where the judge got this spot-on, they are also abusing the children stuck in the middle of a mess they didn’t even start.
And who suffers in all of this? Children whose parents are divorcing frequently blame themselves. It is a tough, tough time for those kids who need more care and concern.
When the parents, family and friends around them get so caught up in their petty, selfish behavior, who suffers for it? Those same kids. Let this be a teaching moment: the children MUST come first. In my book, anyone who doesn’t put them first and foremost is an untrustworthy, immature and selfish asshole who would do anything, say anything to exact revenge and to hell with the consequences.
Not only would I not want these people as friends, I would never, ever want them in positions of power. If they would abuse these children that way, what wouldn’t they do to get what they wanted?

Thank you, thank you, thank you Christy for doing this!!! Brava!!! Clapping!
Christy — not quite the same degree of nastiness, but hasn’t Palin gone after several people who thwarted her before? Didn’t she try to have the town librarian fired because the librarian refused to remove books that Palin ordered her to take off the shelves? Palin seems to be someone cut out of the same bolt of cloth as Bush, Cheney and the rest..being a Rethug means never having to deal with people who don’t agree with you..you just get ‘em fired.
Control comes with the territory when it is God’s will that you are nominated/selected to be President/Vice President/Governor/Mayor.
She thinks she’s a pitbull, but she hasn’t, apparently, been exposed to all of the other pitbulls out here…lipstick or no lipstick…male and female, who care about the innocents who can’t defend themselves.
Rachel is covering this story right now…! ;-)
There are few things that send me through the roof like people in a custody battle using their children as pawns to exact revenge on their soon-to-be-ex.
I’ve done two cases, entailing three full jury trials (one trial hung) involving a bitter ex using the ultimate weapon – getting a young child to claim sexual abuse by the ex (boyfriends in these cases).
It was disgusting, and the poor girls were so incredibly, and visibly, miserable.
There’s a special place in – well, you know – for these people.
Excellent post, Christy.
Bottom line: The judge accused Palin of child abuse. And then she just continued the abuse.
I like your perspective on this. Who would act this way? Perhaps children who’s parent perhaps neglected them in some way? I’m sorry for anyone who didn’t have the perfect kind of childhood which inspired them to repair what they learned.
Nevertheless. My sympathies and empathies notwithstanding…they have no business being in a position to influence the running of our government.
Call me an elitist.
Thanks for covering this Christy!
I accidentally said something very disparaging about my former sis–in-law in my son’s presence, and then took 10 minutes to explain to him why I reacted the way I did and how I intend to work things out with her. Otherwise, I am very careful to make sure he never hears my negative opinions of family members.
Is this another sexist left-wing attack on Gov. Flailin?
I was talking with a colleague today who thinks that Palin has a borderline personality.
Food for thought.
Excellent post Christy, every statement is right on the mark. Don’t know how the professionals who deal with those situations day in and day out manage to keep their sanity. For sure, we have had more than our fill of petty, vindictive behavior from Bush & Co., we certainly don’t need any more.
I was talking with a colleague today who thinks that Palin has a borderline personality.
Borderline what? (asked the man in the dunce cap)
for me, the fact she’d never left the country/held a passport until last year… that was the dealbreaker right there. apparently being stupid and incurious is still a selling point in this country politically… and I’d thought Bush had given stupid and incurious a bad name…
frankly, if this country elects her (well… lets her assume office) the results are frankly what we deserve.
Borderline schizophrenic would be my guess. Republicans are probably at greater risk, reality having a well-known liberal bias and all.
I’m hoping someone will take on the issue of Sarah being a liar. She is a religious nut with regard to choice, yet has no proble lying on any number of issues. It’s been a long old time since I studied the ten commandments, but it seems to me there was something…
Borderline personality disorder? Sounds about right to me.
I was married to someone like that…
Republicans exempted by executive signing statement.
Borderline schizophrenic would be my guess
“You’re Never Alone with a Schizophrenic” – h/t Ian Hunter
Sarah Palin is a train wreck.
What part of nervous nosey nelly fundie book banning control freak mom with 29,000 axes to grind does America not understand that she would be terribly dangerous in any position of power?
Munch, munch.
Again, my sympathy notwithstanding….blech. For them. For us.
I told myself that in 2004. This year, I’m hoping we end up with better than we deserve.
This woman lives by her own set of standards, isn’t she using her newborn as a political tool?
Like you said Christy whatever it takes!
You’re probably aware that multiple personalities is one of the rarest forms of schizophrenia. The most common trait is an inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality.
My guess is that she has a hard time seeing other people except insofar as their existence has some impact on her own life. She certainly doesn’t see others as having their own needs and opinions and experiences.
This was somewhat amusing, apparently, with Sarah en route to Alaska, a McCain rally in Philadelphia didn’t go so well.
This is all in line with my thoughts, except for one teeny tiny qualm…
The ex-husband in this case member of law enforcement. Haven’t we heard of cases of the legal system protecting its own when they transgress? Isn’t it possible that the judge wasn’t looking seriously at the charges being made by Palin’s relatives because he was a cop?
Personally, I doubt it. I strongly suspect the case is as you say, Christy, but I can also see how people might interpret the judge’s remarks as being a case of sticking up for the home team, rather than an unbiased rebuke of a misbehaving party.
I don’t think she is schizophrenic – too high functioning.
Oh, and when I mentioned this case in comments on Glenn’s thread today, the resident troll scoffed at Palin as a child abuser becuase Wooten tased his stepchild. Turns out there is another side to that one, too. Wooten’s description of the tasing:
As far as I know, the CNN interview from which the quote above was taken is the only interview Wooten has given. I know we would probably like to hear more from him, but I wonder if he is trying to protect the children by staying away from the press.
Borderline Personality Disorder
Cheney would be a shoe in for Antisocial Personality Disorder
You’re probably aware that multiple personalities is one of the rarest forms of schizophrenia. The most common trait is an inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality.
yes. But I am, to a large extent, under-educated on psychological disorders. e.g. A client has been diagnosed as paranoid-schizophrenic, but he hears voices and sees ‘little people’. Do those two fit together? – because it sounds off to me….
Good find, thank you.
This woman is a master manipulator reminds me of a boss I once had
How you get there doesn’t matter as long as you get there
thank you.
I am confident you are right, although the original suggestion (by me, replying to jayt) was that Palin might be borderline schizophrenic, although it was intended as snark and undoubtedly in poor taste when referring to a serious illness.
No I recognized the snark, but just responded in my own literalminded way. ;)
Well, Palin’s behavior with regard to her eldest daughter certainly smacks of manipulation to me…that is, “Oh, you think you’re so smart to get yourself pregnant just when I’m just hitting my stride poltically? Well, just watch me…” I think the girl really had/has no interest in marrying ol’ Levi but Mommy did a pre-emptive strike, in public, leaving the poor kid to either like it…or lump it. That’s a family of kids who absolutely know that Mommy Dearest is ready to sacrifice them on the alter of her political ambition…right now.
She is a survivalist…she can shoot animals, people (practices shooting automatic machinegun weapons..that don’t kill moose), whatever…believes that Alaska is the refuge for end days…was a member of AIP “before” she became a Repub in order to run for office…and office…and office…
This woman will do anything and say anything to get where she wants to be so that she is in complete control of her perceived “vision” of the future …
McCain will be awakening to that fact shortly, and it ain’t gonna be pretty.
Her behavior interfering in the divorce of her sister is typical…she is trying to circle the family wagon to create the scenario for their future…the childen belong to “her” tribe…screw the husband…fight at all costs…
I don’t want this radical, extremist, nutcase anywhere near the nuclear football. Just sayin’. She is ruthless and obsessed. McCain and Repubs are complete and utter putty in her hands and fools.
For awhile I thought she was just one of those evangelical fanatics…no more…I don’t even think she believes that stuff…I think she is a major, narcisstic, control freak (hence the sarcastic, snide remarks she makes all the time) with far out ideas..way past the norm.
She is prepared to destroy (professionally and/or reputationwise) anyone who gets in her way…even at the expense of children..consider that she’s running for VP and announced to the entire world that her poor daughter is pregnant and unwed…that is just outrageous.
I really like Rachels show.. no loud sound effects or obnoxious Britney crap.
Being under-educated in all respects, I’ll refrain from commenting on those specific symptoms, except to say that if true, it sounds pretty serious.
I had an acquaintance I’d known since grade school who was diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic in his early 30s. I’ve since lost track of him but hope he improved after receiving treatment. Witnessing the progression was like watching a train wreck in slow motion and needless to say, the effect on his family was devastating.
LS..do you and I have some sort of invisible fiber optic cable between our brains? Amazing congruence of opinion….
Let’s use the proper medical terminology – she’s as nutty as a fruitcake. There !
She may have the trait but unlikely the disorder. Borderlines are known for self-mutilation but the hallmark is “splitting”. They love you ’til they hate you. However contorted Palin always had a kind of justification that had a glancing relation with reality. True borderlines can and will turn on you in an instance and for reasons that make sense only to them.
Tim McGraw’s “How Bad Do You Want It?” addresses some of this discussion. The refrain:
Clearly, in her treatment of her own and her sister’s children, Palin has shown that she is willing to “lay it all out on the line”.
McGraw’s haunting opening and closing of the song, however, tells us of the price for this behavior:
Not Tracy Flick.
Tracy Flick’s mother.
Aha!!! I like your Mommy Dearest analogy, because that is exactly the bottom line…the thing is..she is as slick as they come..the kids seem to really be proud of her..of course they are…they love their mother…but you don’t expose a 17 year old to that sort of “global” humiliation and then announce the pending marriage to a boy who has professed on Myspace that he doesn’t want children…how outrageous. How selfish?
It’s all about Sarah.
That is what McCain is finding out, as evidenced by the fact that today he had to leave his speech while speaking “on his own”, because people shouted him down with “Obama” over and over…
If Kirk were around, he could tell you more. Schizophrenia is often treatable although the treatment can often flatten the patient’s personality. Over time this often happens on its own. Schizophrenics burn out. The active symptoms disappear but the background ones persist.
Let’s face it. We know very little about this woman. My intuition tells me that she is very dangerous. She could be the Anti-Christ.
I’m thinking his public meltdown in on its way.
Everything is all about Sarah.
It would be irresponsible not to speculate.
It’s getting that way, isn’t it.
Just ran across this unsourced F. Scott Fitzgerald quote. Palin might only be 44 but I think it still might be applicable.
Hopefully, she’ll let us know if she finds Bin Laden hiding in one of her caves…
Sarah First — not country first.
Even McCain will awaken to that fact…probably did…today.
Who does that remind me of…Hmmmmm…what kind of personality was like that….hmmmmm???
She will not succeed. She might win in the election, but she won’t succeed.
It is, until we get her out of here.
I was looking at the photo below and thinking how good it would be to produce an ad with that photo and McCrazy in the background calling Dobson and Hagee “agents of intolerance.”
I’m hoping Cindy is whispering in John’s ear, “Be careful what you wish for, my dear, because you never know what will happen after you get it.” Well, John, NOW you know. You wanted to shake things up…and you did..now you have a partner who has eclipsed you, behaves like a schoolyard bully, and is giving greed a very bad name. Risky move John…very risky…and oh, by the way…if you do get elected, I’d hire a food taster and a personal body guard and start wearing body armor pretty much 24/7 because it sure looks as if this woman is positioning herself to ..well, take advantage of your “situation”. and I’d make sure there are no wire hangers in the closet either..
McCain has been “reduced”…he cannot reclaim whatever he thought he had…she has “reduced” him. Think about it. She is the obstacle.
Yup. Pandora’s box is open.
Are you perhaps confusing schizophrenia with bipolar disorder? I have heard of the latter having their personality “flattened out” by medication, but not the former. It is my impression that finding the right balance of medications is a lot easier for schizophrenics than for people with bipolar disorder, but that the former are more likely to go off their meds.
Bob in HI
just now catching the KO replay. Was the Special Comment good?
Great quote.
Blue Texan upstairs.
The thing that bothers me a lot is that she calls those of us down here the “Lower 48″……. NOT Americans……. it is Her and them…… and we are the them…… She does not see herself a member of the rest of the country and it is very telling
Uh-oh. What happens when you’re 65?
Bob in HI
Of course.
Poor Puppet.
They blamed Eve too.
I’ve considered the same thing…strange considerations.
My personal experience with meds for bipolar is that they are a bit of a blunt instrument – and it can be sort of disconcerting when you have looked forward to your manic phases as a break from depression, to have them flattened out as well.
Not his best but worth watching. Thankfully, I never saw the 911 video so maybe that is part of the reason, it didn’t reach me emotionally.
65 is the new 45.
I hope we learn something from the Gibson interview although it’s telling that Rove (undoubtedly) chose 9/11 for the (first? only?) interview.
Bipolars are often treated with mood stabilizers that tend to flatten them out. Perhaps I should have said that schizophrenics get zonked out. They tend to be more non-compliant because they don’t like the side effects and recognize that they have an illness anyway.
Hopefully by 65, despite having convictions, you’ve done your time and been paroled…

Whatever It Takes, Including Emotional Abuse? Nothing Like A Little Abuse Of Power…
—-
It’s not only Palin extended family children getting emotionally abused. Whenever Bush-Cheney-McCain-Palin Republicans lie to the American people, they are engaging in covert aggression and manipulation. Manipulation is a form of emotional abuse.
There are numerous manipulation tactics to be aware of such as lying (including by omission), denial, minimization, selective inattention, rationalization, diversion, evasion, covert intimidation, guilt-tripping, toxic shaming, playing the victim role, vilifying the victim, playing the servant role, seduction (charm offensive), projecting the blame, feigning innocence, feigning confusion, and brandishing anger (false outrage). To learn about these tactics in depth, there’s a book available on Amazon called “In Sheep’s Clothing: Understanding and Dealing With Manipulative People” by Dr. George K. Simon.
Every time Republicans and Neocons tell their lies and use these other manipulation tactics, they are emotionally abusing the American people. This is very dysfunctional behavior by mentally unhealthy people.

i so agree with you. i followed the link to the National Inquirer and saw a picture of Bristol holding Trig, and Bristol looked just devistated.
She may not be the antichrist, but she’s definitely a Christianist “stealth” candidate.
