The McSame campaign wants to make this election about petty personality issues and trivialities — their campaign manager said so publicly. It’s clear — they want to talk about campaign ads and vapid People Magazine profiles and cheesy catchphrases and nicknames.
They don’t want to talk about the highest unemployment rate in 5 years.
The economy shoved its way to the front of the presidential campaign once again, as the nation’s jobless rate shot to a five-year high — escalating fears that the country is spiraling into a full recession.
They don’t want to talk about staggering job losses.
The United States lost a total of 605,000 jobs in the first eight months of 2008, including 84,000 in August 2008.
They don’t want to talk about the skyrocketing deficit.
The Congressional Budget Office said the U.S. budget deficit for fiscal 2008 — $407 billion — will be more than double the deficit for 2007, hit by the wars and a weak economy, and predicted it is likely to rise further in fiscal 2009.
They don’t want to talk about rising gas prices.
In its monthly short-term outlook, the government said prices at the pump would likely average $3.61 this year and $3.88 next year.
They don’t want to talk about record food prices.
U.S. consumers should brace for the biggest increase in food prices in nearly 20 years in 2008 and even more pain next year due to surging meat and produce prices, the Agriculture Department said on Wednesday.
They don’t want to talk about the housing crisis.
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac used accounting rules that created a “house of cards” as the housing market descended into its worst slump since the Great Depression.
They don’t want to talk about the collapsing dollar.
The dollar weakened against other major currencies Tuesday as investors worried about the health of the US economy after the nationalization of two mortgage finance giants over the weekend.
They don’t want to talk about record foreclosures.
The rate of mortgages entering foreclosure hit another record high in the second quarter, as did the percentage of loans somewhere in the foreclosure process, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported on Friday. The delinquency rate, which measures mortgages that aren’t in foreclosure but have at least one overdue payment, also was the highest ever recorded in the MBA’s quarterly survey.
They don’t want to talk about stagnant wages.
Factoring in inflation, hourly wages were only 0.2% higher, and weekly wages were actually 0.8% lower in July 2008 than in March 2001.
They don’t want to talk about the highest misery index in 17 years.
The misery index hit the worst level since May 1991, according to a new analysis released today by the Campaign for America’s Future.
They don’t want to talk about any of these things because on the economy, McSame-Palin is lockstep with Bush-Cheney. They are trickle-down, Club-for-Growth, tax-cuts-cure-all Republicans. And they simply don’t have an answer to any of these problems.
Don’t take the bait.

Lipstick!!!
Book Banning?
Let’s Not Talk About That!
D is for Change!
They do want to talk about lipstick and pigs
Good thing Obama is talking about these things!!!
McCain/Palin is Failin’
Yup. Lipstick is my new zed…
I would doubt they would want to talk about McShames brain injuries
The good thing is in the debates, McSame will be forced to talk about it. But these little games will continue as long as the media (and we) play along.
OT
A college classmate of mine, Emily Lloyd, NYC EP Commish, is testifying on CSPAN3. Subject is quality of bottled water and she’s talking about NYC’s great water & water system.
We need more than Obama talking about these things. Biden needs to get on the news regularly and loudly. The Clintons need to get out there seriously for Obama, not just this token stuff. Gore needs to get after it. The media loves to cover McCain/Palin, so it takes a village and it has to start now before it’s too late.
I agree, except that I think we should saturate the “words” that they want us not to mention…the ones that only Pukes can use and then feign false outrage over….diffuse their BS, shallow tactics, and blunt Palin’s stupid punchline.
McCain will be forced to deal with the issues for which, as you say, he has no answers.
Repeating my post from downstairs. First McSame ran on experience (didn’t work for Hillary either), then reform (repeat of the Dems in ‘06), now personality which is reached a tipping point on the bullshit meter. How many messages can he trot out?
As many as he wants so long as the MSM just rolls with it.
Thanks BT.
digg
I’m afraid there isn’t any room at the media inn.
Don’t you see that by attacking and turning the lipstick BS into the stupidity that it is…forces the Pukes to stop replaying the Palin punchline, which got so much publicity for its sarcastic humor. It was not funny….because they refused to talk about the issues…
Not seeing her little cutesy one-liner on the teevee much anymore are we????
Lipstick
McCain Once Blamed Palin’s Bridge for the MN Collapse
Odds are they don’t want to talk about this:
http://dailykos.com/
We preach to the choir. Palin for all her baggage, seems to be a plus for McCain. Maybe things are perceived as too out of control so simple answers are comfortable. To me some behavior crosses a point of no return like Hillary and sniper fire. It was too crazy. With Palin book banning does it. Doesn’t matter what titles or how many books. Her attempt has no place in a democracy. Election should be unanimous for Obama. Won’t be and that’s the problem.
If each one runs for three days that is three days we don’t talk about economy, mortgage probs, schools, etc..
That’s true. It’s been pretty good reacting. Obama’s gotta start attacking. Playing only good defense won’t win.
Here’s hoping that the moderators ask some challenging questions which don’t mesh perfectly with McCain’s stump speech, ala Rick Warren. Past debates do not make me optimistic that the designated moderators will draw out anything substantive.
I’m guessing the media is getting sick of the John and Sarah show, the rumblings have begun.
Well said, Blue Texan. You’re the BEST.
Why thank you. Thankyouvermuch.
Sarah Palin = “War On Librarians”
Yup, she’s tough alright!
That’s a good point. Doesn’t look like Gibson’s going to be doing any of the debates, though — so that’s a good sign.
He took them head on this morning and then turned to a great speech on education.
He is taking them on.
We all need to take them on. Turn every BS attack they make back on them, because they are stealing everything Obama says and using it for themselves. They’ve stolen “change” for example…they’ve just stolen “wrong”…they will keep doing this. We have to “steal” their words and use them against them too only in a smart way. Obama is doing this brilliantly, without losing his temper.
Sooner or later McBush will blow his top.
The honeymoon is fading, but they’re still having drinks at sunset.
The McCain campaign’s lies have become SO flagrant that the MSM can’t ignore them without sacrificing their last remaining shred of credibility.
FOX will ignore them forever.
How bad do things have to get before the middle class stops voting for conservative fools?
We are talking about the issues, we are being ignored, just not tittilating enough to get coverage.
Last days??? Just sayin’
A saving grace for Obama is that voters know about their own economic circumstances. The more McCain downplays the seriousness of the economy, the more credibility he loses.
It stands to reason that a Maverick would want to give an additional $200K tax cut to people who earn $9 million a year. Fercrissakes, the price of Ferraris has been going up just like food prices!
True but Fox News and credibility are mutually exclusive concepts.
If not for the reforms from FDR, we would now be in another Depression. Those are reforms the Republics wish they could destroy. If only the Democrats could wake peopleup about that.
It could work since the candidates will have to respond to each other
http://usliberals.about.com/od…..ates08.htm
I wonder if Moveon.org could produce an ad highlighting the book ban request. Might raise some eyebrows.
Better — MoveOn should start a campaign to ban all books about Jesus and Ronald Reagan in public libraries.
Fair is fair.
Fox News and credibility are mutually exclusive concepts.
a reverse-tautology.
There ya go.
Let’s make sure the McPalin’s are on a bridge to nowhere….
They have no substance…just more of the same one-liners, and they can’t talk about the issues, because they have the exact same policies as George W. Bush and company.
They pretend to convince us that they are mavericks…more like two fools wandering in the wilderness…you know what happens when you do that…you walk in circles…hikers know this.
The only compass they carry is a compass that points to the last 8 years of disaster for this failure on every single level. That is a one-way ticket to more failure.
Call them on everything they say. Take their words and throw them back in their faces.
And the cornerstones of McCain’s economic plan — more trickle down “voodoo” — cut taxes (for the rich) and reduce (maybe by simply failing to enforce) regulation (notice financial failures and housing meltdown). In other words, more of the same.
How’s that been working out for you?
I’d like to see McCain wheeled onstage for the debates bound to a gurney and muzzled like Hannibal Lecter.
that #42 was for you Blue Texan. Don’t know what happened to the reply button.
Palin isn’t a real book burner. She’s a Maverick book burner. That means she only pretends to ban books to pander to the Wasilla Assemblies Of God voters.
Blue Texan,
Thanks for this summary! I’ve emailed it to my Republican Great Uncle, who regularly spams me with Obama smears. I’m afraid he’s already taken the bait– hook, line and sinker.
Bob in HI
i love you muchly,my new zed is
pitbullbitch
“Let’s make sure the McPalin’s are on a bridge to nowhere….”
Yeah. Let’s even encourage them to take it across to the other side. Then we can be assured that their campaign will go “nowhere,” which is where it belongs.
Bob in HI
Glad to be of help.
Send it to 5 more friends now!

Comstock: Obama called Palin a mayor….he insulted her..
Noron: Palin attacked Obama as a community organizer first…
Comstock: No, he called her a mayor first.
Comstock: Obama is off his game, he’s not talking about issues.
Bullshit!!!!
I expect McCain’s strategy for this and other issues to be distract, obfuscate, lie, and promise “real” change. I agree when he says the economy is fundamentally sound he is going against people’s personal experiences but the rest of the time he seems to be successfully pursuing his plan of muddying the waters and blurring the distinctions between what he and Obama are saying.
“g”
707!
It’s Rovian politics at play… when you don’t have a record to run on or policies that the American people agree with, run a campaign to keep your opponent off message and fill up the air with a shallow campaign that avoids the issues and deals in the personal. It’s scary though once you list all of those things that are going wrong in this country of ours… we deserve a real debate about the issues… not pigs and lipstick, teaching kindergartners sex ed, nor lies about one’s supposed stances on the issues.
Little Ms. Purple
Have already started sending this out. It’s great. Thanks.
Can you see them quivering in their little boots? They get all flustered when pressed on the issues, and aren’t allowed to blather on tangents.
Okay, here’s is today’s Puke talking point:
Obama is “obsessed” with Palin.
I’ve heard it a bunch of times today from them…that is their answer to Obama’s response to their stupid attacks.
Hmmmm…obsessed??? What…stalker?? Wolf? They are just setting this crappola up.
Palin is known as the wolfki**er in Alaska…
No No No – he needs to be led to his lecturn and allowed to babble like the blithering idiot he is – let the world see his brain is addled
that’s why the bagels are so good.
ooh – MSNBC has a sound clip from Mayor Bob Weinstein of Ketchikan, Alaska, (the city involved in “the Bridge To Nowhere) saying Mrs. Pit-Bull had nothing whatsoever to do with anything about that issue, that she never said “no”, and that she couldn’t have said “no” because she wasn’t even governor yet.
“She knew that when she became Governor, and she knows that today.”
heh.
Come on Republicans! Piss off the press some more! Please?….
America: Wanna see McCain’s economic plan in action? Kick the tires? Take it for test drive?
Check out the last 8 years.
McCain is promising more of the same.
Manchurian Candidate McCain wants to not talk about Irak. That is a “death knell”. That is, an omen of death. Also, no talking about he who shall be nameless.
This is from Think Progress who have had far too many fact based stories today. Finally, they had a lipstick story. Crazy John wanted to talk about “Lipstick” but the video violated another Copyright.

Or attack the Republican usurpation of the Constitution and the Executive, Judicial branches, and the evisceration of Law.
I’m with you on that; too much nattering over trivial nothings.
Never thought about it from that POV. What about the local brews?
I’d take it for a test drive, but it won’t start. Gonna have to walk.
Bring back the McBush /CHIMPY love embrace
Comstock: Bullshit!!!!
‘Nuff said really. All of the middle stuff, with Babs, can safely be left out, and one can then proceed directly to “Bullshit!!”
Someone made this great, important point yesterday:
McCain is always accompanied closely by people like Graham, Lieberman, and now Palin whenever he speaks publicly..there is always someone there to correct him, or help him up or down the steps, etc., or in Palin’s case..do the speaking for him and allow him to look on (while staring at her butt) while she does the work.
He cannot function alone!
Would it be asking too much to require that he wear short pants with suspenders and a beanie with a propeller? You know, just to set the appropriate mood…
That’s really pathetic. Obama and Sarah, sitting in a tree…
Extraordinary Deflection. Making a Natalie Holloway tabloid story out of the election per orders from Karl Rove.
Perhaps the Dems should point out that the rest of the industrialized world is operating pretty much along the line of the New Deal, and providing better quality of life for their citizens, e.g., health coverage for all, for less money. The Dems feel that they’d be called unpatriotic if they suggested that other nations might have a better idea.
And Palin with her pointy had and magic wand.
What a great picture that’d make.
and, if looking at gas prices is a big deal, here is something that we all believed anyway..”Speculation by large investors — and not supply and demand for oil — were a primary reason for the surge in oil prices during the first half of the year and the more recent price declines, an independent study concluded Wednesday.
The report by Masters Capital Management said investors poured $60 billion into oil futures markets during the first five months of the year… Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., a sponsor of an anti-speculation bill, said the Masters report challenges CFTC claims to date that supply and demand forces — and not excessive speculation — has driven up oil prices.
“This analysis illustrates that when oil speculators poured large amounts of speculative money into oil markets, prices skyrocketed just as they were hoping … And when the speculative money got pulled out, prices tumbled,” she said.”

ugh – Babs back on again.
Lovely sweet, feminine voice to go along with that, err – face.
Charlie Savage at the NYT has an interesting article just up about corruption in the Interior Department.

While Republicans may be against abortion and contraception, they apparently still like sex and cocaine.
McCain can’t talk about issues because there’s nobody home:

for you Blue Texan
for keeping it so effin’ REAL!
The President, he’s got his war
Folks don’t know just what it’s for
Nobody gives us rhyme or reason
Have one doubt, they call it treason
We’re chicken-feathers, all without one nut. God damn it!
Tryin’ to make it real — compared to what? (Sock it to me)
thank goodness so much as changed in 40 years :D
Crank it ‘dogs !!!
Babs and her red, blotchy, lying neck.
Amazing how much a smidgen of properly applied makeup can help… “g”
I’m sure Cindy Lou and his handlers will have some say in that. Maybe someone could leave a bib on his lecturn so that he could have something to protect himself from the drool
Are you speaking of the First Mother?
I thought it was the present value of increasing drilling in the future that has brought the oil price down. /snark
It would demonstrate that he is committed, or should be.

“McPalin is on the Bridge to Nowhere”
That coup de grace, my friends, must be deployed strategically and surgically at the debate. It can be the bumpersticker of the whole campaign.
My 85 response to you
The right is forever telling us what others think, feel, care, wish, etc. They should speak for themselves, and shut the fuck up. The rest of us can interpret Obama’s words and actions for ourselves. Their help is neither needed nor appreciated.
McCain’s economic plan was written by Phil “Whiner” Gramm, the single person in government most responsible for the mortgage meltdown. Since the Great Depression, we had rules to prevent just this sort of thing. Gramm was sure we didn’t need them any more; “the market” would do it better, so he got them abolished, and here we are.
If you think the Bush economy sucks, wait till you see the McCain/Gramm economy!
I haven’t seen McShame wearing a flag pin in forever. What gives isn’t he patriotic?
No, no, no, no, no!
Barak wasn’t calling Palin a pig. Silly Republicans, Sarah is the lipstick. McCain is the pig.
Which would guarantee that the price of the ensemble would be in the six-figure range.
Hilarious.
Brilliant, LS, what about an even shorter version:
McPalin – Bridge to Nowhere
Gramm called Ron Paul to pressure him into endorsing McCain. Paul declined.
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/…..se-mccain/
Lets get straight – 1.Obama is talking about McShame and their respective positions refers to McShames policies as lipstick on a pig. 2.McShame et al say he is talking about Palin. 3.Obama is obsessed w/ Palin WTF
Seems a tad unfair to the porcine-American community. By most accounts, pigs are extremely intelligent. At the very least, it is likely none of them will be voting for the McCain/Palin ticket.
Josh says Ds should embrace lipstick on a pig as it so clearly represents the McCain/Palin ticket.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/215503.php
Hiya, pups!
I’ve got about fifteen more minutes in my office – with nothing happening – before I head up to Wasilla and get a fresh set of pictures of Gov. Mooselini’s porky earmarks. The rumor is they’re running real low on lipstick around here…
Once you think about it, it’s obvious!
The one question I’d like to see McCain asked: “You talk a lot about change and reform — how do your proposed policies differ from the past eight years?”
They’re accused of being the same as the Bushies. You’d think that’d be pretty easy to refute. But they want to have it both ways — pretending to be “different” to attract independents and non-28-percenters, while not mentioning any actual differences to keep the Bush worshipping base.
So, Senator McCain, you claim to represent change. What do you plan to change from the current Republican administration?
well lookee here . . .
balloon-juice
I’m actually quite worried that there will be a McCain/Palin economy.
Where are the Democrats to stand with Obama? They need to get out there, get loud, and get on TV.
No prisoners!
No He has changed from the 2000 straight talker to a lying, sleezy, rove puppet
Are you speaking of the First Mother?
sorry – was away for a few.
No – Not the Quaker Oats
guyperson, Barbara (Babs) Comstock, close and admired friend of Jane and Marcy… heh – /shttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Comstock
Sorry, Linda – Anyone who has her/his in the government trough and doesn’t come to work is a pig, so not only is McCain a pig, but so is Bush, Palin, Dick Cheney…the symbol of the GOP IS a big enormous hog.
The Ds ought to show up at every McCain event with a live pig with real lipstick on it. Thank you for all your work in this election.
It should represent their “policies” not the “ticket”, or it plays right into their hands.
But we should embrace “lipstick” in all its forms…Palin claims lipstick as sort of a female power thing..well…everyone can play that game…they’re all pissed that Obama used the “punchline” word and took away the thunder from her little pathetic oneliner. Just sayin.
Not all earmarks are bad either. some can get some needed things done. Additionally if the earmarks go away does the same amount of money get spent someone else gets to determine where – see $ from bridge to nowhere
Pigasus Chicago 68
Ah, of course! It’s all clear now.
That’s cool, just don’t making them an example of what a frickin maverick you are. . .right?
Did you check out Josh’s graphic? I think it can apply to the ticket as long as you include both names. Doesn’t play into their hands if a man is part of the designation. Their whole point is that Obama’s use was sexist cause it applied only to Palin.
Camp Palin loaded with Bushies.
Bush+Lipstick=Sarah Palin

Dig, baby, dig.

We haven’t even taken any yet, Raven, so nobody’s had to discuss what we might do to them….
The McCain campaign has banned the uber conservtive Fairbanks News-Miner from coming to the Ft. Wainright and Fairbanks ceremonies today and tomorrow honoring Mooselini and her oxycontin-slurping son. That’s like banning teh Pravda from a Stalin speech. Why?
Gotta go take some pics….
I don’t have that many Republican friends (maybe I need to get out more).
*G*
Bob in HI
absolutely – faux savings that he spends 18 times over in his budgets
I’ll go look. My problem with it is that Obama was not referring to any “people”, he was referring to the failed policies…so I don’t want to see it “personalized” to McCain and/or Palin, because that wasn’t the context that he said it in, and then the Rovians will say “see, it was about them”…
I’d rather fight them on the use of the word by Obama as being suddenly “sexist”, and the connotation that you can’t say anything at all that smacks of something “used” by
womenPalin. Ridiculous. I hope that makes sense.Bush in drag. Somehow, I don’t think that’s unheard of.
Lip gloss, not lipstick. Get with the pogrom!
Now if Obama would only listen to Blue Texan excellent advisory.
Thanks for detailing your point. I did not fully understand what you were getting at in your original comment.
agree. just loved how Cole boiled that cabbage down !!!
So nice to see a post about Sarah Palin. I was wondering why FDL wasn’t reporting on this.
Actually, if Ds worked like Rs, a bunch of people would show up at every McCain Palin event with signs bearing that pig logo on the TPM site.
This actually is a post about the McCain campaign.
I still wouldn’t want to be shippin with no outfit advertising a high value target but that’s just me.
OK…I’ve been checking on “zed”. I find a definition that it means “zombie” (from Shawn of the Dead – good movie). There were a few other possible defs but none would make it useful in the context of blog posts.
What is the meaning of “zed” in this context?
Maybe with the new influx of tourist bucks, Wasilla can finally pick up the tab for those rape-kits.
Ah….thanks for the enlightenment. Some comments seem to be all over the place.
It’s always nice to be told how it is.
Thank you.
Palin team stocked with Bush veterans Jonathan Martin

With Sarah Palin facing unrelenting press scrutiny and enjoying off-the-charts excitement from voters, John McCain’s campaign is quickly moving to augment her staff and put in place an infrastructure that can address the unexpected wave of interest.
OH GOODY
bring it backnow
http://pinkdome.com/archives/bush_mccain_400.jpg
I’d like to see a 527 run with the “pig in lipstick” comment…only directed specifically at mccain: Go over the economy and what McCain’s policies are (more of the same!) and as the litany of economic woes is listed, slowly morph McCain’s head into that of a pig with lipstick on it as the end shot comes: “You can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig”.
Can you just imagine..waking up every morning for another 4 more years thinking about the last 8 years and feeling like you are going to throw up.
Honestly, someone needs to go after Palin, because she insinuated that behind the smile and the “lipstick” (which is something to enhance your appearance in an attractive way) is an aggressive, dangerous animal….
..that is a bit like the Big Bad Wolf wearing a bonnet and looking all innocent in disguise and trying to seduce Little Red Riding Hood until she starts asking, why are your eyes so big, why is your nose so long, why are your teeth so big….All the better to eat you with…
That is just plain lies and deception.
are they holding some fact based krytonite ???
See my 112. I like that better.
So if McCain and Palin are elected, everybody gets morning sickness?
Zed replaced first comment “Fitz” after the trial was over. For a brief period, the first one would appear as comment number zero, which was amusing. So we called it the zed, which is a word for the letter z, first letter of zero. Does it need to make sense? It’s just for fun.
If the pig got loose, you’d never be able to find it in one of those crowds.
Pfotenenha08*(*&%&*%er is flailing trying to make the case that Obama was referring to Palin in his remarks…
They are so losing this one.
Shuster: If Obama really intended to call Palin a pig, that would be insanity.
Pfoontnenteoajt: It was “carefully” scripted in and was a jab to her, because they are terrified of her, and her experience and accomplishments, and he has no record.
Bwhahahahahaha
Shuster: That’s nothing compared to the earmarks in Alaska
hhahahahaha…
Keep it up!!!
David upstairs.
Couldn’t someone here (with more internet expertise and broader vocabulary than I) add to a Wikipedia definition of “maverick” to encompass these very points. (Or, perhaps incorporate some of LittleMissPurple (@57) . . . so Googler’s could learn how a definition morphs, and ultimately may mean something far different than originally understood?
Wait! You mean Sarah Palin isn’t the totality of the McCain campaign? They have something else to campaign on? Amazing!
Shuster: Nancy, Nancy, Nancy, I’d love to have a beer with you, we love having you on the show, but you’re just thinking your are winning this because you want to control the media…thank you….next.
Earmarks have always been a red herring. First because as pointed out upthread they represent a tiny part of federal spending and second because Republicans before they lost in November 2006 were their biggest champions.
Now that it is a ”known” that Rove in a McCain ’operative’ and maintains his ’independent analyst persona with Faux News, is it time to talk about government-sponsored PROPAGANDA MEDIA?????
me likey
Hmpfh.
You and I have rarely shared comments.
I’m wondering why you took it personally.
My fault. I used the word post. ‘Cause the Post Title has the word Palin in it. Maybe the other commenters didn’t get your “meme”.
World got you down?
Me too.
The original Zed was for Ned.
Didn’t the French have a phrase for that? “Belle dame sans merci.”
Oh, wait. That’s John Keats! From trope X:
Let’s hope America wakes up from this bad dream before it’s too late.
Bob in HI
I chuckle to think of it.
Morning in America sickness
Yo, Blue Texan:
Cut-and-pasted your excellent rundown (with link and your byline!) in a diary, Wanna see the McCain economic plan in action?, at DailyKos.
I took it personally?
hey, BT, the reason unemployment is at an all time high is because of the minimum wage increase! Oh yeah. It’s the dems fault!!! ROFLMAO.
That’s a very funny comment.
