They don’t have collection policy etc. as far as I can tell on the site.

The borough’s policy was revised mainly to replace the borough manager as the final decision maker with a formal Reconsideration Committee. Mat-Su Borough Manager Don Moore said Saturday that changes were made, with the (his?) blessings, after a dispute that was resolved about two years ago involving a challenged book at the Big Lake Library.”

It probably involved a lot of tears, sweat and grief that the manager could have spent doing other things, like running the library. If the library isn’t prepared to defend a book, then a challenge may be successful. I am guessing this may have been the case?

Book challenge policy..
If the library has a formal procedure with hearings etc., then it should be documented. In which case, the library itself would be the source of information.

A book challenge policy generally isn’t the same as book banning. A book challenge policy can allow patrons to air grievances, on a form. Some of us might call it *cough* hiding behind beaurocracy. It’s a way to protect other people’s constutional rights to read a title, even while someone else is complaining. That’s probably while Sarah Palin was upset. Palin is “rhetorically” talking of summarily yanking “offensive” books from the shelves (like Chaucer). Emmons goes the professional route and explains the book challenge policy. If Sarah Palin is familiar with it and knows it doesn’t neccessarily lead to books getting yanked from the shelves, if ever, then she probably got unhappy with Emmons for giving the professional answer (standard library procedure) and not the answer she wanted.

Well there was at least ONE BOOK that Palin supported banning…nad this provided the context in which she had her rhetorical conversation with the librarian.

Emmons said the current Wasilla policy, which she described as written in more general terms than the borough’s, also worked procedurally in a book-challenge case last year. Emmons said then-council-woman Palin was distressed about the issue when it came up, indicating she was aware of the city’s book-challenge policy.

Emmons said in the conversations with now-Mayor Palin in October, she reminded her again that the city has a policy in place. “But it seamed (sic) clear to me that wasn’t really what she was talking about anyhow,” Emmons added. “I just hope it doesn’t come up again.”

Meanwhile, Emmons said she is working with borough libraries boss Bruce Urban and Palmer Library Director Janice Sanford, in the hope of getting the cities to adopt a book-challenge policy identical to the borough’s. So what were these books? What was Palin’s role when she was City Council member in the Wasilla case? Maybe ET or Celticdiva could hunt these items down, or speak with those locals in the know.
