just heard Sarah Palin’s lie about the Bridge To Nowhere™, “we told the feds, if we wanted a bridge, we’d build it ourselves.” The federal government does not “build” state highway projects. In fact, even the states themselves don’t build major projects–they hire contractors to do so.
And what Congress authorized and appropriated was not a bridge, but money. And Sarah Palin kept the federal money even after she flip-flopped on the Bridge. So Palin did not say “no” to Congress in any meaningful sense–she took their money; she accepted the earmark that she had previously supported, just redirected the funds to other uses in order to quell a political controversy. That’s not “change we can believe in.”

And saying “we’d build it ourselves” is meaningless, because not only Congress was not going to “build” the bridge, the state doesn’t build bridges either, so Alaska wouldn’t “build it ourselves.”

Her whole Bridge To Nowhere™ tall tale is a gross and willful misrepresentation of the way highway projects are financed and constructed, and of what happened in Alaska. It is a lie.

The media should be pointing this out. That is, if they want to insist on calling themselves “journalists.”

After the complaints about the expenditure of funds for the Bridge To Nowhere she rescinded the project. But she still used the money to build an “Expressway TO the site of the Bridge To Nowhere”.

Maybe by her saying that “we’ll build it ourselves” she means from State Highway funds. But ultimately that’s still money coming from us…folks down here in the lower 48. Alaska simply gets their money by taxing every barrel of oil coming out of the ground (mostly on Federal land) and running through the pipelines going South. So Alaska taxes US! We still are paying for the bridge!

Notice she said ‘build,’ not ‘pay.’
