As Blue Texan noted earlier today, they're responding broadly to the McCain-Palin campaign's constant barrage of false statements with this ad.
Even the normally reticent Obama is circling the "L" word. In an interview on Countdown, Obama said of McCain-Palin: "they're not telling the truth." But as he did in a campaign appearance on Monday, Obama used every synonym for dishonesty he could think of, except "lying."
The media is also calling the McCain-Palin claims false. This McClatchy fact check, and today's WSJ article point out the falsehoods in McCain's latest ad. Josh at TPM lists more media awakenings, and adds:
On the stump, not a single word that comes out of her mouth -- or not a single word that the McCain folks put in her mouth -- is anything but a lie. I know that sounds like hyperbole. But just go down the list. None of them bear out.
Marcy at emptywheel has started a counter for the number of lies Palin has told since her ascension to a heartbeat away.
Unable to defend the truth of their statements that Palin opposed the earmark for the "bridge to nowhere," the McCain campaign is trying to change the subject, which the AP dutifully reported to help push the Republicans' dishonesty out of the lead AP headline.
McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, proclaimed last week that the election is not about issues but about personalities. Davis may get his wish; if the election focuses on character, it may well turn on how voters react to the willingness of McCain and Palin to engage in relentless lying. As Obama said on Countdown, "by the time this is all over, the contrast is going to be clear."

The more I hear of Palin, the scarier I think she is. She’s like a Trojan horse (soccer mom, my ass!) for the James Dobson crowd. It seems she got her sticky fingers all over things as mayor, harassed the library director with banned book “rhetorical questions” even after libray policy was explained to her, she had no respect for professional ethics, national standards, questions of constitutionality or curiosity on the way things generally work, but continued to bludgeon the professionals with her Dobson mentality. As I said downstairs, I am still fearful that Gibson’s puff interview will manage to change the narrative somehow. The establishment media, as shown on the above piece, really believe that the DFH’s don’t represent a large portion of the public.
It appears that Obama has decided to stay “above the fray” on the Palin situation and letting other people call a lie a lie. The Democrats really are working with a stacked deck where for the media the middle lies between a 30% Bush/McCain “conservative” side and the 70% everyone else “liberal” side. Watching the Repub delegates cheer Palin when she slammed community organizers made me ill. These people are downright mean, and it’s beyond my imagination how they can claim to be practicing Christians! I’m plenty skeptical of a lot of both of their policy decisions (I will say though, that Barrack wrote me a really nice letter about how he knew is FISA legislation vote was a deal breaker, which I appreciated so I could give all my money to Al Franken, instead ;-).

I am not big fan of Biden (D-MBNA/Bank of America), but McCain and Palin are demonstrably lying out on the stump every single time they go out there and we have the YouTubes to refute them on every single point. I don’t think Biden was on the Intelligence Committee at the time (correct me if I am wrong here), he had access to a lot of the BS, stove-piped intelligence that we got piped to us by Judy Miller and the New York Times.
Biden certainly didn’t take a courageous stand here, but I don’t think that equals to the lying that Palin does every single time she goes out there.
that’s not what happened, it wasn’t only bushco - biden was chair of the senate foreign relations committee and he orchestrated the hearings prior to the vote. the hearings where only the batshit crazy pro-war people were permitted to give evidence and the scott ritters were kept out. it was biden who helped push the lie to congress and to citizens.

I like flatout honesty. A liar is a liar, not one who “shades the truth” or “doesn’t tell the truth”. Those are skate-around words and long sentences in place of a simple, clear, easily understood words: “Lies” and “Liars”. Governor Palin is lying when she says she said no to earmarks. Governor Palin is lying when she says she is a reformer. McCain is lying when he talks about his independence. And so forth. What are people who habitually lie? They are liars. People need to get used to saying the quick, simple word in place of the dance-around-the-subject sentences.

Just got back from my kids orthodontist appt.. I was one of four people in the waiting room, the receptionist started talking to the parents sitting in the waiting room about Obama, and how he is a muslim, and we all know it…blah..blah. Then told the story about how she and her sister were at the rally in Lees Summit, MO., and got to shake Palins hand. “Oh, she is more beautiful in life than in pictures, they are praying for her family, and she is just like us…..” I was the only one in the room that wasn’t jumping with joy. I’m so glad to be back at FDL, with the sane.
McClatchy is the former Knight-Ridder folks. The folks who actually have done reporting on the Iraq invasion, questioning the rationale.
They have also done more honest reporting of behind the scenes moves in DC than most of the other media chains combined.

Unfortunately Scott Ritter was (I think, but I don’t know) unjustly tarred and feathered as a child molester right when all of this stuff was happened. Ritter was proven absolutely right. I remember Ritter going around the country at the time giving speeches about how there was no there there in regard to the WMDs. The Bush administration managed to paint everyone who was saying, what ultimately turned out to be the truth as being batshit crazy. That was the climate at the time.
As I said above, I am not a big fan of Biden as he has not shown the propensity to buck conventional wisdom. On the other hand, Palin/McCain are 150 times worse; they will be as doctrinaire as Bush in regard to finding facts to fit their positions. We will have a lot more influence, I feel, with a Obama/Biden administration than we will ever have with a McCain one. That is at issue here.
