The Washington Post has an article this morning on the 312 nights Sarah Palin spent in her own home -- and still charged the state for 312 days of "per diem" allowance (which is supposed to cover expenses while traveling).
The media narrative is that Palin cut back wasteful government spending in Alaska and took on her own party to do so. But that becomes less compelling when you factor in that she paid herself $16,951 to live at home. And it's not like she can toss her hair and say that "this is just the way things are done in Alaska":
In 1988, the head of the state Commerce Department was pilloried for collecting a per diem charge of $50 while staying in his Anchorage home, according to local news accounts. The commissioner, the late Tony Smith, resigned amid a series of controversies.
"It was quite the little scandal," said Tony Knowles, the Democratic governor from 1994 to 2000. "I gave a direction to all my commissioners if they were ever in their house, whether it was Juneau or elsewhere, they were not to get a per diem because, clearly, it is and it looks like a scam -- you pay yourself to live at home," he said.
Palin and her husband both make six-figure incomes. They don't need to be chiseling the state for this money to live, and she sure isn't entitled to be running on fiscal responsibility when she's pocketing cash in a way that has a history of being regarded in Alaska as a "scam."

But he was a POW.
And she has a Downs kid.
Well personally I think it is out of bounds and sexist even to point this little detail out.
The liberal media is not being fair to a true conservative.
Demand reassignments and firings.
Palin prays correctly so this really cannot be true.
McPalin’s whole candidacy is a scam and one huge lie after another. When oh when is the media going to grow a pair and call these two on their many blatent lies?
Oh, this little issue will work against the little miss, if it’s framed right. One of the issues that killed John Gard, a weasel R from north of the Green Bay area in the last election was that he lived in a suburb of Madison while represented his northern Wisconsin district (and claimed per diem while living in his 2nd home)…of course Gard is back, trying to unseat the Dem that beat him. Jerk.
I find it completely incomprehensible Palin’s candidacy is being taken seriously and her convention speech being lauded. Moreover, why isn’t McCain’s judgment being scrutinized more closely for picking her, a flippant move, to say the least, which demonstrates his utter contempt for the voters.
Whether you are for Obama or not, certainly his decision to pick Sen.Biden demonstrates how seriously he takes the V.P. spot whereas glib Palin is the embodiment of shrillness and should have never been in contention for the vice-presidency.
From the Post:
See? She is a fiscal conservative, generously refusing to take the state’s money.
/snark
Just don’t ask what it means to take a child “on official business” — children are off-limits, you know.
Oh, I don’t know. She prayed that this would never come to light, so she must have done something wrong when she did her praying.
From little corruption, big politicians grow. It’s just farm league, petty ante chump change. Now she’s been called up to the big league where the big bucks are. Reminds me of Bull Durham. Ah the American dream!
Jane, you’ve worked on a lot of films. What does the studio accounting dept., or even the accounting people on an individual film, do with employees trying to screw around on the per diem they get when working/shooting out of town?
The GSA who manages travel & per Diem rates for federal employees rules that travel is from your home or office to an off site location. I bill the same, when I travel for my work, it is from my home office to the client site. It is not from your work site to home. This highway robbery….
Yup. This is the sort of thing that people, even slightly dim people, can understand.
As a business owner and person who contracts with multiple clients, you are correct. “Home” is never counted as legit.
I daresay there should be a follow-up (ya think?) as to the policies in other states…do they allow this?
Michael Kinsley destroys the myth that Sarah Palin is a fiscal conservative in this article. It is really good.

“Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up now!”
Gack.
Our last Arizona Governor (Hull) was under investigation by both Repug & Democrats because she was using state resources to travel to her “summer” home using the state police helicopter. I seem to remember the costs was over $175,000 for a year… they were near charging her for the misuse of state resources…… but they just could not have another Governor of AZ to go down infamy ….. after all how many AZ Gov’s can be impeached in a century?
Jane - you do realize that you’re just shootin’ the hell outta your chance to get an interview with Her Hockeyness, right?
Not nearly enough respect and deference in this post.
The sinking of the Repub ticket is going to be drawn out and painful.
Kinda like “enhanced interrogation techniques” - but hey, those are good things, right?
Saw lots of this behavior on Wall Street. People making millions/year cheating egregiously on their T&Es. Never did understand it, except to say that I guess greed knows no bounds.
there’s a diary at Kos asking if she paid federal taxes on all that fake per diem money:
http://sipples.dailykos.com/
…even slightly dim people, can understand.
Got it !! *g*
I have done both state and private travel. Answer: Never.
WOW! As Christy would say….”Booyah!”
That’s ’cause you’re really sharp ;)
That’s a good quote, but my favorite is
Nothing at all inappropriate there.
But will it happen before the election? There’s not that much time left.
Mornin’ Jane and Firedogs,
love that something has finally hit Page A1
former flight attendant here - we were paid per diem whenever we were away from our domicile - back then, it was non taxable
that was a looong time ago, different industries, different jurisdiction’s, but inquiring minds want to know
Rich people like free stuff.
Quote comes from an investment advisor (think Uber Banking Services…wink, wink) who was trying to sell us retirement planning services. We didn’t go with him.
Charge the state to take your kid on a tour of the church they worship at!
What a MAVERICK!
Don’t forget that Alaska residents each get a yearly check for about $2,000 from oil revenues. Palin is just a thief.
“The Show”
It shant matter a bit.
The only circumstances surrounding the Republican Vice Presidential candidate which are going to be made an issue of in the Main Stream Media are those which have been already determined to be off limits.
Her family is reported upon; but is off limits. Her faith is reported upon; but is off limits. Her credibility is not reported upon, because it is entirely within the bounds of good reporting and not even the most jaded reworking for the rules of propaganda would allow that to be off limits, so it must be ignored.
Witness the manner in which the MSM ignored the fascist riot control tactics employed by the police forces at the RNC.
The media will not make an issue of this simply because it does go to credibility and that would preclude the MSM from selling fries with this shitburger.
This comment refers to the Time piece that Old Gold mentions at 24…forgot to click the link button!
But will it happen before the election? There’s not that much time left.
Well - with Mrs. Palin providing roughly one scandal per day, and almost two months yet to go - I’d say -> yeah.
God made her do it.
per Diem is NOT taxable per IRS guidelines. I travel a lot for my work and use the GSA per Diem guidelines. IT is not taxable, if used and reimbursed appropriately within the guidelines then it is reimbursement for expenses by your employer for travel for business.
This year I have flown over 35,000 miles, I collect per Diem from the day I leave my home for business, pro-rated on the time I leave, e.g. if my flight is at 2pm then I cannot charge for Breakfast for my travel day and the same for my return day. If I arrive home early in the day, I cannot charge for dinner, I’m at home.
It sure ain’t paid if they’re staying in town.
Don’t know how it worked for the Divine Mrs. Sarah, but in my neck o’ the woods (SoCal) per diem is reported to IRS separately & you get a 1099 misc. income form for it @ tax time.
So, we’re to believe that she was willing to scam the system to the furthest extent possible, yet took
BWWWWWAAAAHHHHHAAAAAAAAHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
If you still believe that’s actually her baby, I’ve got a Bridge To Nowhere to sell you.
Ask the question…
How many paid maternity days off?
Water broke, flew 16 hours, had a baby, back at work three days later.
Sure!
Actually it is $3200. Palin, in effect, put a windfall profits tax into effect that has produced another $1200 for each Alaskan.
It might be a good idea for someone to request to see her tax returns.
thanks!
this is a dry hole
While speaking in tongues she prayed for a miracle birth.
No crap. I know a couple of ex-employees from Warner Bros. that won’t ever work there again over false billing on per diem. Got the infamous “WB Letters” written on themselves for trying to scam the per diem.
Look if they weren’t chiseling someone, they wouldn’t be Republicans. Doing so, when they don’t need to is just icing on the cake.
Tax Evasion?
Yum!
Red Meat…Just like steak…
Her Hockeyness now speaking - the lies continue - to wild cheers.
McLame feeling a little buyer’s remorse now that he’s been reduced to Number 2 on his own ticket?
WASILLA, Alaska — Sarah Palin and John Bitney go way back. They were in the same junior-high band class. Mr. Bitney was a key aide in Gov. Palin’s 2006 gubernatorial campaign. When she took office, she gave Mr. Bitney a job as her legislative director, and a few months later stood beside him at a news conference and praised his work.
“Whatever you did, you did it right,” she told Mr. Bitney and his team.
Seven weeks later she fired Mr. Bitney for what her spokeswoman now describes as “poor job performance.”
[John Bitney, then Gov. Sarah Palin’s legislative director, speaks at a press conference at the end of the legislative session on May 17, 2007, weeks before the governor (right) fired Mr. Bitney.]
Alaska Governor’s Office
What happened in between? According to Mr. Bitney, Gov. Palin got a call from another old friend, Scott Richter, informing her that his wife, Debbie Richter, and Mr. Bitney were having an affair. Mr. Bitney had kept that secret from the governor, even as he told her of his divorce, he said.
They may never work again at WB, but they could have bright futures in Republic politics.

Thanx for the post, the goodies jest keep rollin’ in on this Klondike floozy but I think that the biggest scandal is that Gibson is goin in ta interview her in a controlled environment and the rest of the corporate media is layin’ down instead of hangin’ her out ta dry on every single rumor because she refuses to appear before the press a natural (so ta speak). As long as the attention is focused on her, the rest of the fascist propaganda machine gets a free pass on all the big lies they continue ta tell…
This woman is as phony as a $3 street walker but as long as the corporate media legitimizes her by not forcin’ her into the open, the campaign lights turn away from John McCrazy and, of course stay offa Barak.

Fuck the family, I guess. She’s in Ohio today.

Besides the billing per Diem for staying home….. the question of the State of AK paying for travel for the family on state business…..
Has heard any other state where they pay for the travel of teh first dood and kidlets?
Since we have a single white female Governor and the one before had a husband who was a practicing physician with grown kids, I have no recent experience with this. Does CA pay for the govenator & family to travel for state business? Anyone else know about your state?

Governor McGreevey came under criticism last week for using State Police helicopters in 45 trips during the first seven months of his term, costing taxpayers more than $13,850 in fuel alone. The governor’s office said that it was important for the governor to visit as many parts of the state as possible and that the helicopters were only used for state business. Jo Piazza
wow. talk about a skilled politician, give her the vice presidency and she may be able to outdo bush’s “accomplishments”
Don’t forget to DIGG this one folks!
This is a story that needs to be told coast to coast.
Of course that tax money really wasn’t the “good people of Alaska’s” that she was stealin’
It was taken from the folks in the lower 48.
Alaskonomics
Palin espouses “John McCain” policies but runs an oil-economy in Alaska that’s more akin to an socialist OPEC state like Venezuela…while putting in pet-projects like an Emir from Bahrain.
And cleaning up corruption? Funny how she was running with the Ted Stevens asking for “earmarks” up until the time that the FBI began circling them like vultures. She even took money from VECO (who was her largest contributor) in her failed Lt. Governor campaign. Suddenly Stevens and Young were pariahs. Well maybe? Has she actually come out to endorse their rivals in the upcoming election? I bet you she won’t. She’d be perfectly happy perpetuating the climate of corruption.
And why would a “reformer” allow money that she raised to be used to keep incumbents that have led to the economic crisis, rampant lobbyist bribery and deals, and the “Washington culture” in office? Just like her support for Stevens and Don Young, McCain-Palin is allowing the RNC to have free and unrestricted use of the their current fundraising? That money is going to be used to keep incumbent Republicans, the very ones that McCain rails against, in office.
Citizen plunger:
Fascism is here and it hasn’t been imported…it’s the original home grown progenitor of all the fascisms that have appeared in the last 150 years. There is an argument that Dave Neiwert has unearthed that the political terrorism of the early 1930’s and onward in Germany has it’s origins in the KKK and I have been sayin for years that the entire structure of fascism in this country goes back to the relationship between the antebellum salvocracy and the national government and the northern banks.
In any case fascism is here, it’s been here and it’s ours entirely…the war has finally come home!!

Does CA pay for the govenator & family to travel for state business? Anyone else know about your state?
I would assume that every state pays for its governor to travel on official state business.
I would also assume that very few states pay their Governor to stay at home.
(hmm, now you’ve got me thinking - I wonder if we could pay Evan Bayh to stay home?)(not the Governor, but hey, a trend’s a trend, right?)
Hello everyone,
Slightly OT, but this is about the media and Howard Kurtz, specifically.
I’ve been busy over at my local newspaper’s media critic blog, who states that it is a good thing that Olbermann and Matthews have been replaced because it supposedly destroyed “70 years of good journalism” at NBC. I comment at length at #42.
This guy is admittedly a personal friend of Howard Kurtz and has read and agrees with Brock’s “Republican Noise Machine,” but it is still interesting to me how cowered the establishment media is by pressure by the right wing.
To get on topic here, while this is on A-1 of the Washington Post, I am sincerely worried that Gibson’s puff interview, and a puff interview it will be, will go a long way in establishing the narrative for the election where the GOP has managed to make the election about personality and not issues.
Seems like “flip” is the operative word to describe McSame:
A flippant pick for VP
Numerous flip-flops on “long-held convictions”
Flips off the voters and the media* by unabashedly and repeatedly lying
*But they let him get away with it because he is a Maverick™ and a POW™

Please Mr. Obama: release an ad that juxtposes Palin’s claim of being a tax reformer for Alaskans and spending $700 a night on a hotel.
As well as Cindy Lou’s complete tax forms. Funny how McCain could be allowed to promote and enact legislation and distribute our money in ways that could personally benefit his wife and kids…and no one in the MSM is even whimpering about her concealing her hundreds of millions?
It was just that sort of exposure that revealed that McCain was interfering with the investigation of Charles Keating, a business partner (and lender) of Cindy McCain during the S&L Bankruptcy Scandal.

Alaska has a very screwy per diem system; nobody has rocked that boat yet. Former Alaska Rep Vic Korning - now in jail - collected per diem while in Juneau and away from his MatSu valley home. He was sleeping on his counch in his office at the capitol.
oops, that would be a New York hotel.

At a profit, according to Mrs. Palin. Also not true.
direct quote - from inside the darkside:
At the rate she dips into the till and the time she spends at home, I did the math - assuming she’ll charge more for being VP than Gov - and it comes out to $40,000 a year just for the food per diem. That of course does not count the travel costs for her and her brood.
does yesterday’s Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac gaffe count ?
She could have claimed expenses for “each child” she took on the trips? I see that about $47,000 was claimed for per diem for the kids? So is this simply saying that not ALL the kids were claimed…but some were.
People! This is YOUR MONEY…Alaska’s budget is drawn from taxes on oil and gas, as well as Federal funds. Almost all of that is money taken from us “down Southers”. Alaskans actually get PAID from the taxes drawn off us FOOLS to the south.
No wonder Palin is no longer a member of the “Alaska Independence Party”…it’s far more beneficial to sponge billions off the rest of us US citizens.
Funny how these demagogues can scream about OPEC and yet will conceal the fact that Alaska is acting just like a Libya, Nigeria, Venezuela or Saudi Arabia when it comes to taxing oil and gas to make their economy run.
Yes Palin is highly popular in Alaska…so was Stevens and Don Young for ages. And so is Chavez of Venezuela…and for similar reasons.
Sarah Palin’s Alaskanomic’s
she is an amazing piece of work…as the French say …formidable
We may have a two-fer here. Not only should she not be VP, may be the good folks of Alaska have heard of the RECALL. She and Ted are quite a team.
she said she put the plane on e-bay. true.
McCain said she sold it on e-bay. Bullshit.
Honestly, alaska’s a big place. i don’t know that i’d have a problem with the guv having a plane. I mean, if Cindy needs one to get around AZ………
I vote “no” on that one.
Steve Benen made an interesting point on Maddow’s show last night - If McCain is like Bush 90% of the time, Palin is like Bush 98% of the time, down to the issue of “God’s Will” making decisions.
This woman is as stupid or ignorant as Bush is (I am on the “ignorant” side as far as Bush is concerned) and that issue is more an indication of her being an ignoramus than being a liar. On the other hand lying is the last refuge for an ignoramus so it certainly can be shoehorned on to Hugh’s list.
They also used the plane for such things as transporting prisoners down to the lower 48.
What gaffe? Do you have a link?
she is popular CAUSE SHE GAVE EACH Alaskan TWO GRAND…thats better than a chicken in every pot imo
Thanks Hugh.
Bullseye.
Thank you.
Thanks! Should we call Sarah “Meat”?
Jane, This whole unfolding story just screams for a screenplay, doesn’t it? It is just too wacky to be believable, except for the IOKIYAR rules. Please consider this, when the election is done:”Smart, sassy, intrepid blogger digs up the goods and bads of Western wingnut politician….”
He was a POW!
She has a Down’s kid!
Her daughter CHOOSE to keep the baby AND get (underage) married!
She loves moose burgers!
She loves to see wolves shot randomly from airplanes!
Yup. She put the plane on e-bay and it didn’t sell. No bidders. She then ended up selling it for a loss to some rich business man.
No linky - it was at rawstory (at least where I saw it). Basically, she pulled a McCain, clearly showing that she doesn’t even understand what Fannie and Freddy were. She said they had gotten too big and were too costly to the taxpayer, implying that they were federal run and needed to be privatized(?) or…well, it didn’t make much sense at all unless she meant to say that they were too big BUT (a bailout) costs taxpayers too much (so let them sink).
That isn’t what she actually meant or said, though it is confused given the two mutually exclusive statements (too big to fail BUT too costly to taxpayers, full stop). Huh? What are you saying Wolf Killer?
Having operated on an expense account for thirty years it was well settled “no hotel bill, no per diem”. I wonder if the State of Alaska requires some proof of overnight stay on “official business”?
where’s the deference?
What I don’t understand is why Alaska keeps all that oil revenue. As I recall Sewards folly was bought and paid for by the federal government. I would think mineral rights belong to all of us.
