Abe Foxman of the ADL has a funny way of viewing bigotry, anti-Semitism, and hate speech in general — namely, that if a Republican is connected to it in any way, it’s just fine with him.
The latest example: Sarah Palin’s connections to the Dominionist End-Times movement – you know, the folks that are "friends" with Israel only because they want to see it destroyed in Armageddon? More specifically, her pastor Larry Kroon’s links to Joel’s Army (who want to purge America of everything that isn’t Christian) and the "Jews for Jesus" crusade. As Jeffrey Goldberg notes, Foxman told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that he "didn’t have much problem" with Larry Kroon and his Jews for Jesus ties, even though Foxman wasn’t so forgiving in 1997: "’Christians have been trying to make us disappear as Jews for 2,000 years. Now they’re trying a different method, which is for them to tell us that you can believe in Jesus and still be Jewish. It’s baloney, of course."
Remember: Foxman was all upset over Obama’s pastor. But when he sees a Republican whose pastor has Jews for Jesus and Joel’s Army connections, he does a flip-flop and throws out his long-held stances just to give her his seal of approval.
My favorite is when Foxman, trying to justify his hypocrisy, claims that unlike Catholics, Protestant denominations such as that of Larry Kroon’s don’t have a history of Jew-hating. As Charles J. Brown says, Foxman needs to read what Martin Luther wrote and preached about Jews: Luther’s infamous pamphlet "On the Jews and Their Lies" was one of the Nazis’ favorite pieces of writing. In it, Luther called the Jews a "base, whoring people" and – in a chilling foreshadowing of what the Nazis would four centuries later – advocated their being put to forced labor and even stating that Christians "are at fault in not slaying them".
But of course, Larry Kroon’s famous parishioner is also John McCain’s running mate. And Foxman has also given a free pass to John McCain’s infamous spiritual guru, John Hagee — whose endorsement McCain openly sought though he lied about it afterward. (Then again, one shouldn’t be surprised that McCain thought enough of Hagee to seek his endorsement. The guy whose school nickname was "McNasty" has been known to shove around oxygen-dependent women in wheelchairs and to attack even fellow conservative Senators like John Cornyn. But I digress.)
Here’s what Abraham Foxman has to say about John Hagee: "I think there is a role for [Pastor John Hagee]. He has earned a certain recognition with the community because of his support for Israel."
Here’s what John Hagee has to say about Jews: "It was the disobedience and rebellion of the Jews, God’s chosen people, to their covenantal responsibility to serve only the one true God, Jehovah, that gave rise to the opposition and persecution that they experienced beginning in Canaan and continuing to this very day."
Just in case you didn’t get the point, Hagee also gives some good ol’ Blame The Victim Theology: "How utterly repulsive, insulting, and heartbreaking to God for his chosen people to credit idols with bringing blessings he had showered upon the chosen people. Their own rebellion had birthed the seed of anti-Semitism that would arise and bring destruction to them for centuries to come."
This is the guy that Foxman gave and still gives a free pass, even as he spent months bashing Obama over Jeremiah Wright. This is a pattern that Foxman’s shown for a long time: Come down hard on non-righties, but give handslaps at most to righties, and then usually only if forced to do so by guys like Glenn Greenwald. Such a fair and balanced guy.

Never heard of this Foxman. Where does his creds come from?
And A BIG HELLO to PW in the State that was Under Siege by the Feds!!
If Foxman likes Hategee then Palin is more than his cuppa tea. Sounds like the guy has no self-respect, kind of like Lieberman.
I got the Trifecta!!!
Because turning it into a radioactive parking lot unless everybody accepts Jesus
as their personal saviour is so supportive.
Like W a less than a year after 9/11, the Israeli loving Jews have soooo given up their moral authority.
More proof that the right has no honor or principles. For them it is all about raw power.
This is absurd!
How can these nutjobs have muscled their way into our public discourse?!
This is outrageous!
EPU’d as usual: Trying to get the word out can be hard with this fast-traveling group.
——-
Just an FYI driveby because I HAVE to go offline:
If anyone here is on FaceBook and are friends with Randy Koehn (aka Noonan here at FDL) please go give him some love and support. His parents were in a car wreck, yesterday. Dad made it. Mom didn’t. When my son was killed the same way, the number of people who came to provide support made a huge difference.
He and his org are the Jewish equivalent of the Los Cabin Republicans.
Foxman is well known as a denier of the Armenian genocide: http://www.counterpunch.org/walsh08222007.html, http://www.counterpunch.org/walsh08272007.html, http://www.jewcy.com/feature/2…..ire_foxman

(((Noonan)))
Sadly, they got here via Preznit Eye Tinerant and his band of merry pranksters. Remember, his favorite philosopher is Jeebus and he’s a red-blooded American! Without the fundies, including the ones on the Supreme Court (Scalia and Thomas) he’d be the retired governor of Texas or baseball commissioner.
But Gaw-wd called him to be Preznit (and take lots of vacations) so we’re stuck with him and all his dominionist minions and have been for seven point five years… ick.
From wiki:
The ADL says it keeps track of the activities of various “extremist” groups and movements.[14] According to ADL Director Abe Foxman, “Our mission is to monitor and expose those who are anti-Jewish, racist, anti-democratic, and violence-prone, and we monitor them primarily by reading publications and attending public meetings …. Because extremist organizations are highly secretive, sometimes ADL can learn of their activities only by using undercover sources … [who] function in a manner directly analogous to investigative journalists. Some have performed great service to the American people—for example, by uncovering the existence of right-wing extremist paramilitary training camps—with no recognition and at considerable personal risk.”[15]
The ADL regularly releases reports on anti-Semitism and extremist activities on the far left and the far right.

Maybe Foxman is hoping for a continuation of the PNAC style remodeling of the ME under the leadership of Palin/McGigolo. The killing and suffering of Arabs and Persians may be an acceptable metric to Foxman.
Foxman was stolen away and raised by Catholics for several years before he was returned to his parents. He’s got a chip on his shoulder (understandably) wrt Catholics.
Abe is a Hardliner for Israel at any cost.
Exactly! Please let people know. I have to go…got chores that won’t wait, but I want to make sure as many people who care about him as possible know what happened. Thanks.
Because we have even bigger nut jobs on teevee that are called “journalists” who don’t think anyone should know any of this.
Have we forgotten this is an election and not a Bar Mitzvah or a Baptism, Ordination, or some other rite that expresses one’s religious freedom? I do have Repub friends (not saying this proudly) for whom the huge Israeli support would be very counter to what’s important to them.
Some of this stuff surely is going to cut both ways. How do we help the Dem. candidates make the best closing argument that the Repub ticket is both moribund (McSame)and over her head (you know.) I think we must somehow really mount the truth, so what is the best way to be heard?
Palin is ready for her Assumption into Heaven.
How can we help? ;)
The sooner the better.
This is OT to PW [and salut! PW for enduring the invasion of the body snatchers last week in St.P], but did anyone else see Bob Woodward on 60 Minutes tonight? Woodward said Bush demanded body counts because he didn’t think the soldiers were doing their jobs well enough.
Body counts.
Did he get them broken down by men, women, children, babies?
I’ll be interested in Siun’s take on this.
Obama might want to avoid talking about “My Muslim faith”.
First his comments on the surge, then his affirmation that the Bush tax cuts help the economy.
Now this fuck-up.
Is he getting paid to throw the fight?
-G
OT – Don Haskins the college basketball coach who was first to play all African Americans on the starting NCAA championship team in 1966 has passed way in El Paso, Texas.
I would very much like to see the body count reports he received.
Sounds like Foxman considers some hate groups acceptable provided they are pro-Israel. It is common for people to confuse Judaism the religion, with Zionism the political movement but I would expect greater insight from the ADL.
How much do you want to bet the ADL does monitor groups who don’t espouse hate or violence but criticize the policies of the government of Israel?
Yes…it was scary, repulsive stuff. I thought even Woodword had been shocked by what he was saying. Let alone whatever the great military gizmo that he could not describe and the launch of the Iraq plan for whoever comes next.
All while he supports the troops, of course.
Have to trust team Obama now. They haven’t let us down yet, and it’s an indication of how he’d govern. Look at how screwed up everything about McCane’s campaign has been.
What cha got?
I agree with you. I just want to see a strong uptick in the conversation. People liked his “Do they think we’re stupid question?”
There is a new-ish pro-Israel group/lobby(?), called J Street which tries to avoid just such hypocrisy, and which is calling on McCain to say whether he really supports a two-state solution, for example.
I recently signed up for the e-mails, and though I don’t know too much about it, so far I’ve been impressed with their messages and the issues which inspire them to calls to action. I just saw that they have set up a list of Congresspeople who are thinking clearly on issues related to Israel, and whom they encourage their members to support. It’s one that includes people like Donna Edwards and Steve Cohen, so they seem to be on the right track. Anyway, I think it’s a great sign that people are finally getting together to say that being supportive of Israel does _not_ mean one needs to be a Republican, nor that one needs to hate Arabs. On the contrary! Their support for Israel pre-supposes that what is best for Israel is a set of peaceful, sensible solutions to the regions’ problems.
In case anyone is interested they are at http://www.jstreet.org
A friend told me that 2 old Jewish guys – Hardliners – showed up at a Local Public Library lecture where the topic was ME/US relations. They were there (uninvited – they were not part of the lecture) to monitor and steer the dialogue. My friend was not intimidated, but others probably were.
This is an example of the way some groups operate – at low-key, local levels.
I cringed at that too. Can’t really blame Obama for being a tad unguarded, though. It’s not as if his opponents are the sort to use a statement taken out of context…
Um, Obama hasn’t let us down? FISA, abortion, Georgia, Afghanistan? Curious what your definition of “letting up down” might be.
FYI — I have a facebook message open to Noonan. Anybody here who’s not a facebook contact with him, let me know in this thread and I’ll add your names and comments before I sent it.
Obama stepped on his words in an ABC interview and said “McCain has never questioned my Muslim faith”.
Whooo boy.
First, he(Obama) continues to tell every American who will listen to him that McCain is “an honorable man”.
Obama is telling people day in and day out that the man who says he “wants to lose a war for political reasons” is an honorable man.
He’s vouching for McCain’s credibility as McCain calls him treasonous.
I don’t get it.
-G
Me neither.
At this rate, soon Axelrod will be saying that Obama doesn’t speak for the campaign.
Obama sure doesn’t speak for me.
Is our candidate learning from Kerry?
Oh, and BTW, McCain’s now leading. How is that not “letting us down?” Geez.
And Gore. Bend over. Spread cheeks.
Obama’s got a good ad on teevee. Its Bush and McCain hugging. More of the same. Voted with Bush 95 percent of the time. McCain saying the wrong things in his own voice. Its a very good ad.
Too bad Obama is not handling/countering Neocon bullshit live in interviews. Yes tax cuts are great, McCain – great guy, Muslim faith…
Obama needs Rachel Maddow to coach him.
Thanks for all of this. BTW: This ticket has two people who had the following nicknames in high school: MCNASTY AND THE BARRACUDA … isn’t that terribly telling?
Source? I heard the other direction today. But I don’t recall that source, sorry.
Again… I’m putting my tinfoilhat™ and question why my Phoenix local CBS is showing tennis and NOT 60 Minutes…..WTF? is there something in it that will touch McBush?
Too late for coaching. Les jeux son faits.
http://news.aol.com/elections/…..1200490524
The Woodward story was the first. Sometimes 60 minutes will delay for a sports event; don’t know.
What is ADL?
Nah, they’re still in reruns. Repeat of the segment on liberal scourge Alec Baldwin. Only a hate-filled islamo-fascist sympathizing left-winger could leave such a hurtful voicemail for his 12-year old daughter.
Anti-defamation League.
http://www.adl.org/
I stand corrected, according to RevBev @ 45 some of it was new.
Compared to What?
Me! Please.
OMG!
Its some women’s tennis match with the big sports talking heads….. AND my cable guide says 60 minutes…. I went on line to the 60 minutes website and watched part of the Woodward piece…..
Ok I guess the station got lots of calls…. the crawl states it will come on after the US Tennis Open completes….
I think you don’t want to be like the creepy Obama reps at Netroots Nation, who, when I went to complain in person, snippitied back at me: So what’s your choice?
Somehow that does not endear me to Obama.
ADL is really nothing more than an attack-dog of the Israel lobby.
Its’ mandate is to characterize any criticism of Israel and its’ policies and actions as being antisemitic.
Thus, any serious debate is derailed while said critic must defend themselves from the implied charge of antisemitism.
Heh! Hey, gang — found out about this too late to participate. Just wanted to stop by to say hellp.
Understood. But what will you do?
And Jews are not immune from being accused of antisemitism by ADL. AND, I might mention, Arabs are Semites, but let’s not get techinical.
hellp?
As a NYSer, I get a free protest vote. So prolly Barr.
You got it. And, maybe we can add some names at late night. I won’t send it until later.
Wasn’t it once called the Antidefamation League of B’nai Brith?
I get e-mails from J Street and I’m impressed with what they are trying to do. I strongly believe that most American Jews are not happy with the fundies.
Prolly. Check it out on their website.
Nonetheless, calling themselves J street vs K street is creepy.
I did. B’nai Brith sponsored it at its’ founding in 1913.
There is something about defending oneself too rigourously that leads to the opposite outcome that one desires.
“Methinks the lady doth protest too much”
Indeed.
A bit analogous to the nuclear arms race. Only ADL is verbal arms race.
Well, there’s always John Hagee McCain.
Seriously, though: A lot of this is simply because of the media’s long-standing deference to the GOP. The only reason Joe Lieberman gets as much face time as he does is because the GOP/Media Complex sees him as a club with which to beat Democrats.
That’s why the press played up the every last move of the Democrats’ primary season as Yet More Evidence Of Backbiting Democrats, whereas the major rivalries between Republicans were shoved aside in the rush to crown McCain, who was shown by all the major polls to be the only candidate capable of going toe-to-toe with all three Democratic candidates. (To see just why the Republican bigwigs wanted McCain even though the base didn’t: In Rasmussen polling done before the start of the primaries, Edwards consistently did the best nationally among general-election voters, beating every Republican handily except Rudy Giuliani, with whom he tied; Obama did nearly as well, beating most Republicans easily aside from McCain and Huckabee; and Hillary Clinton came in third, losing by double digits to McCain, losing by closer margins to most other Republicans, and only winning against Tancredo and Ron Paul. Bottom line: McCain was their only hope.)
Yup, and hello, too. ;-p
I don’t care why. I care what are the Ds doing about it and the A seems to be nothing.
The dems are as much in a thrall to AIPAC as any Repugnican, even more so, I’d wager.
A-yep.
The Big Q is: What do you think they should do, that they actually CAN do? Especially with a deck stacked against them. Frankly, I’m amazed that Obama has done as well as he has, considering the coddling McCain’s got and still gets; note how the press backed off on Palin once he threatened them?
I missed the Book Salon today, but many of these issues were brought up then — one of them being how the press tends to adopt the Republican framing of an issue as the default stance, the “normal” stance, which makes any other viewpoint seem abnormal or un-American.
I believe it was the Romans who said, there is no fortress which cannot be breeched with money.
Republicans have Wall Street types, Fundies, Anti-taxers, Neocons, racists and some other types with money and they spend it Liberally.
