“I should say this, that Pat doesn’t have a mink coat. But she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat, and I always tell her she would look good in anything.” Richard Nixon (1962 Checker’s Speech)

“At first they had me in a bunch of furs,” she said of the photo shoot. “Yeah, I have furs on my wall, but I don’t wear furs. I had to show them my bunny boots and my North Face clothing.” -Sarah Palin on her Vogue photo shoot

But the problem is Sarah, you DO wear FUR…and quite expensive ones at that. But you do look good in them.

The interesting thing is, I went to high school with Sarah’s lawyer, Thomas Van Flein. My brother emailed me yesterday asking if he was the same Tom Van Flein we went to school with who graduated in 1981. I wrote back that I think he is.

This whole tawdry mess isn’t a presidential episode, it’s a Jerry Springer show brought to life.

mommy’s fundy bona fides

I think you should just reframe this as “bona fundes”.

Thank you Pheonix Woman. Anyone can pretty much take anything a candidate says and make it look bad out of context.

Hi wayyy into EPUland PW.

I’ve tried to hold back on this, and I simply can’t stay silent.

There’s something else, something very much akin to what I have witnessed as a sportsfan-mom for many years. Here, decades later, it still freaks me out, especially when I read the occasional references in the news to dust-ups between parents “supporting” rival teams, or between out-of-control parents and officials, or even involving verbal and physical attacks on the players themselves.

It is ugly, hurtful, sometimes even physically harmful, certainly emotionally wrenching, particularly vicious, and unwarranted anywhere, much less when associated with childrens’ sporting events.
The memories of some of those supposedly grown-up fans are still with me, and to this day make me cringe with outrage and disbelief.

I speak, as you probably have already guessed, of the particular “brand” of zealot Sarah Palin seems proud to claim for herself, when she bellows in public that her sports/parent personality is akin to that of a pit bull, only with lipstick.

First off, she is being unfair to pit bull dogs, many of which have wonderful personalities.

More importantly by far, her proud proclamation reveals a personality type surely every person here is familiar with: the dreaded, brutish, epithet-yelling type of spectator who makes everyone around them shudder with disgust.

Sarah Palin, your idea of mothering bears little resemblance to what I remember, or what I tried to impart to my own children.
The special horror is, she doesn’t seem to “get it”.

That’s what a lot of my medical-professional friends thought, too: de facto abortion via malignant neglect, which allows her to terminate the fetus without having to officially jeopardize her anti-choice reputation.

Also there is that 14 hours where besides the risk of herniation of the umbilical cord the second risk is infection risk for both the mother and baby. A premi special needs baby with ruptured membranes x 14 hours ……. Any one heard how long the baby stayed inpatient? AND that facility did not have a NICU which is a specialized ICU for critical newborns. Sepsis is serious stuff……

I ran this scenario through a bunch of my nurse friends, some who worked in the NICU or OB said…… wow how do I say it without saying they thought it implied intentional life threatening risk to the baby.

That’s what freaks me out.

Here’s what she’s copping to — boasting of, really:

Her water broke at 4 AM. Instead of rushing to the Dallas hospital — and mind you, she already knew that Trig was a special-needs baby who was only 7 1/2 months along — she gave her speech, probably wearing Depends (even overnight menstrual pads wouldn’t suffice to hold back the flow), then took an eight-hour flight back to Anchorage (with a connecting flight in Seattle) — and then, rather than go to the Anchorage hospital, drove herself ANOTHER forty-five minutes to the Mat-Su Hospital in Wasilla. At this point it’s been over fourteen hours since her water broke.

Oh, and by the way, airlines get very nervous about women passengers in their third trimester of pregnancy — and not just for the baby’s sake. Blood pressure is elevated in women during pregnancy - sometimes fatally (a condition called pre-eclampsia, which as the name suggests often is the precursor for full-blown eclampsia), and flying can exacerbate that as well as cause/exacerbate edema (swelling due to fluid buildup). She shouldn’t have flown to Dallas in the first place, as that may have triggered her premature labor.
