"I want you all to stonewall it, let them plead the Fifth Amendment, cover up, or anything else," Richard Nixon said privately to his closest associates on March 22, 1973. Publicly, on April 17, 1973, when this picture was taken, the President said, "I condemn any attempts to cover up in this case, no matter who is involved." — The Washington Post
Everybody’s favorite Dominionist anti-choice scandal-plagued governor is at it again, this time in an effort to obstruct justice:
Gov. Sarah Palin is taking the wrong approach to Troopergate. She should be practicing the open and transparent, ethical and accountable government she promised when running for governor and boasts about now that she’s on the national stage.
Instead, Gov. Palin has begun stonewalling the Legislature’s attempt to get the bottom of allegations that she, her family or staff violated ethical or state personnel rules.
As a result, the Troopergate allegations hang over Palin’s future and cloud her candidacy for vice president.
The allegations are that she, her family or administration improperly pressured then-Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan to fire Gov. Palin’s ex-brother-in-law, state trooper Mike Wooten, who had been in the middle of a custody dispute with Palin’s sister.
[...]
Palin’s lawyer has asked the Legislature to drop its investigation. He had the governor file an ethics complaint against herself, in a bid to turn the entire matter over to the state Personnel Board, which would hire an independent investigator.
This is not an open and transparent attempt to establish Gov. Palin’s accountability. It is an attempt to drag out the investigation until after voters decide the fate of her vice-presidential bid.
Now, one would think that if Sarah Palin has nothing to hide, that she would welcome this investigation, as she had claimed she did earlier this year when the news first hit. An innocent person would love the chance to clear her name once and for all.
Instead, we get stupidly thuggish stalling and intimidation efforts like this one:
Gov. Sarah Palin’s lawyer, Thomas Van Flein, made an absurd threat in his battle to get the Legislature to back off its ethics investigation of the governor and her staff.
Van Flein said legislative investigator Steve Branchflower tried to call First Gentleman Todd Palin directly on "a secure and confidential line. This represents a serious security breach that we may be obligated to report to the Secret Service."
Hello? Branchflower is acting on behalf of the Legislature. That’s a security breach?
Lawyers are supposed to vigorously represent their clients, but claiming that a legislative investigator’s phone call may be a security matter worthy of Secret Service attention is ridiculous.
Gov. Palin should keep her legal attack dog on a shorter leash.
BOTTOM LINE: More obstruction from Palin in Troopergate.
Thing is, all this stonewalling is probably too late — damaging information, including a phone call between Palin staffer Frank Bailey and a state police official that ABC News acquired, has already come out, and more is yet to come, despite the McCain campaign’s ham-handed Nixonian efforts to kill the investigation:
In a move endorsed by the McCain campaign Friday, John Coghill, the GOP chairman of the state House Rules Committee, wrote a letter seeking a meeting of Alaska’s bipartisan Legislative Council in order to remove the Democratic state senator in charge of the so-called "troopergate" investigation.
Dumb move, Mr. Coghill. You tried this while the whole world is watching, and now everyone is eager to see what you’re trying so hard to cover up with too-cute stunts like this. Instead of making the investigation go away, it’s now been fast-tracked. Nice one, buddy.

Apropos not Palin but Cindy: RememberNixon’s speech in the early 50s? He did an early version of “I am not a crook” and pointed out that Pat, his wife, was wearing a “good Republican cloth coat” — humble, plain, but honest. Somebody might have some fun comparing Rs then to Rs now — cloth coat vs. $300k+ bling.
Not that Nixon was anybody to emulate, ever, but it could make a deliciously squirmy moment for the candidate.
said she wanted this investigation to move as fast as possible so she would be vindicated, that was a lie
she said she oposed the bridge to nowhere, that was a lie
she said she told congress, “thanx but no thanx” to the funds, yet another lie
she said she was responsible for decisions relating to the national guard, that was a lie
anyone else want to add to my list, I think we should compile these with the “said” links and then the proof that this was a “lie” link
I guarantee that would be linked to all around the tubes and would prove an excellant source for all progressives during this election cycle
I LOVE the affection he had for his dog…you can visit checkers in the wantagh bide a wee cemetary along with trigger and a few other famous pets
teh checkers speech
I have this overwhelming dread that all of these serious allegations against her will not be brought to court…
…just as W. and Cheney have gotten away with it.
I read somewhere that the Veep first dood has also lawyer’ed up too
Oh what I loved was Rachel Maddow saying the LIE word on Friday’s Countdown…. She said that LIE word over and over again….. really said it….. AND her own show starts Monday….. woohoo…
too bad he wasn’t drummed out back then, eh not?
There’s a lesson there.
I agree, it will take quite a bit of perseverance to get these brought to light
this is something we have not been able to master, since there are SO many events that have arisen we have a real tough time staying on any one event
we can’t cut down a tree in the forest, the other trees are too close and we can’t get that saw going in such confined area
but, yanno, those two aren’t gonna get along, McNasty and Sarah Barracuda, maybe all we’ll have to do is sit back and watch the fireworks as they self-destruct.
Sarah Palin on the other hand is chavtastic!
oh and the Troopers Union has joined in on all the fun
ironic as I rarely side with that group, they are often busy defending some Rambo type, but in this case I welcome their militancy and their ability to use the media
This person is supposed to be an agent for change?
Heard a great comeback for Palin’s criticism of community organizers. “Jesus was a community organizer, Pontius Pilate was a governor.”
The thing is, Perris, we have nearly *identical* situations as when Nixon was in power…I don’t get Congress rolling over and allowing this to happen…
WOW!
get that off to biden!
The Democratic Congress is responsible for the public’s willingness to just shrug it’s shoulers at the corruption and scandals. They failed miserably in holding the criminals of the Republican adminstration and Party accountable.
And another sad thing about this case is that Trooper Wooten would like this all to go away….he seems to be all out of “fight”…not judging him, mind you, because I’ve been there myself. I’m sad that the Barracuda has obviously beaten him down.
I dunno, Bluetoe. His approval rating is sooo low, apparently people are paying attention. I guess I don’t get that Congress wouldn’t act on that knowledge that people don’t hold W. or Cheney in high regard?
OT, maybe, but did anyone hear Letterman say “she looks like a model for Lenscrafters.”
I guess this is just her demonstrattion that she’s qualified for the job…she can defy the rule of law with the worst of ‘em.
Imagine how much food and shelter that $300K could buy for the hurricane ravaged people of Haiti.
You don’t have to go half way around the globe to find people in dire need.
They are our neighbors. They are the least among us.
But the Rethugs are busily trying to push their camels thru needle’s eyes.
At the heart of every LIE is “I” — and McCain had a hundred of them in his convention speech.
agree, agree, agree.
McSexist is quite dismissive of women and how long before all that Sarah spotlight/adoration gets to him
perhaps the Dems are beholden to the same big $$$ interests as the Repugs
Do you really think there is a difference between the two?
How about a visit to Ireland.
international experience from fishing permits
Taking on the oil interests.
That’s what scares me. She’s got the tactics down pat.
The approval rating of Congress is even lower than Bush’s! Part of the reason is because the Dems let the Republican majority control what happened through their countless “fake filibusters” giving the impression that Congress doesn’t work. It doesn’t work because the Republicans didn’t want it to work so they would have at least one issue to run on in November. In addition, the Dems refused to aggressively go after the scandals and corruption leaving the impression they were imcompetent and impotent.
A-yep.
Sarah Stonewall is hiding from the press too, as a serious examination of her career and history would make her candidacy collapse like a poked soufflé.
Has anyone see this one?
Alaskans Speak (In A Frightened Whisper): Palin Is “Racist, Sexist, Vindictive, And Mean”
The part that bothers me the MOST is this …..
Haven’t we lived with this for 8 years…. this is BushCo on steroids…
Yeah. His enormous ego and his temper aren’t going to stay in check all the time, not unless he’s so heavily-medicated he falls off the stage.
Yup. Just saw that.
And Obama will be on KO on monday
McSame wasn’t interested Palin,s political skills It was her other ASSets he was after
No wonder Stevens wanted the trial in Alaska…it’s not about the campaign, it’s about the jury nullification….

in the event you are still about and in case you haven’t seen it:
Dr Horrible’s Sing-a-Long
what would they do if she now or soon rescinded her candidacy?
Governor Palin, Tear Down This Wall !!!
I agree.
I guess the next question is…how do we fix this? How do we get things done when we’re not corporate lobbyists?
Also wearing that outfit the night they were trying to sound “nice” with their take your Repug hat off and put your American hat on crap…. she was prancing around in a $300,000 outfit in her new sex kitten look …. I much prefer her in her Cruella look
Absolutly see how Palin has changed from someone seeking the highest per capita amount of pork in the country to a “fiscal” conservative
whew, PW. Nice job. And perris, I hope you can hear me stomping my feet and cheering you on! YESSSSS!!!
That being said, the pic is too much to take. Still get a shudder looking at that skunk. Then I realize today’s skunks smell even worse.
So-o-o-o PROUD and truly heartened am I to have that Obama/Biden ticket charging in to the fray! We need them so. OMG.
“John Bush” is not the only neo-con who wants to drill, drill, drill with Sexy Sarah.
rofl!
Obama is on This Week with George on Sunday. Getting good exposure now.
choice bits from yesterday:
So my wife was on her books and writers forum this morning, posting against a hardnosed “write” from North Carolina. My wife mentions she was reading all the fact checking on the CBS, MSNBC, CNN, and other various news site. The North Carolina woman knocks the rust of the old saw and comes back with, “You can’t trust anything from those organizations, they are blatantly liberal.”
Well, if you can’t go with the facts to reach some people, you just can’t reach some people. Stupid is as stupid does.
I’m wanting the Sarah Palin wight to crawl back in her barrow of her own accord once the bright light of truth is shone upon her, but I’m realizing that the very concept of “truth” is what is in question.
The Colbert satire of “truthiness” is leaching much to far into this passion play for me. The woman is a liar, whether telling her own or repeating other’s, she lies. And if there are those who are willing to allow the spin on those untruths to somehow be questioned, then the reality of the entire production is in question.
I did see Rachel Maddow, the other day, use the words “lie” and “liar.” And she gives me hope. But if it is allowed that she is “blatantly liberal” and therefore her assessment of the facts is discounted, then there is no one who will be allowed to play by the rules. Indeed, it is becoming apparent there are no rules and the Republicans actually need it that way in order to change the game.
So, hell with it. I hope Barrack and Joe continue to take the high rode with class and conviction as they have. For the rest of the media circus, bring on the National Enquirer and the Springeresque white trash relatives! Let’s see how she handles a hair-pulling, in your face tabloid attack. That’s not fair you say. Well, there’s no rules, remember!
oops. missed one:
Saw a neat quote this morning in the Toronto Globe and Mail attributed to Graham Greene, who is supposed to have quipped that in America, the notion that anyone could become president has morphed into the belief that anyone should become president. I think that presently sums up the position of the Republican base.
This isn’t her first obstructionist rodeo.
I also like what Kagro X had to say about this:
“There are a million problems with naming someone as Not Ready for Prime Time as Sarah Palin to the ticket. But one that deserves more attention is the broader implications of her “it’s not rocket science” attitude toward governance.
While it’s a great applause line for the Republican Party faithful who hate government anyway, and who, frankly, have fallen a bit too much in love with anti-intellectualism, it’s also indicative of the fact that she’s grafted together the absolute worst possible aspects of several different brands of Republicanism.
She’s never played in a world where there are real procedures that are in place for a real reason. She thinks everything’s a PTA meeting, and she can just do what she wants, because she’s the boss and everyone hates red tape. Fire town officials on a whim? Sure. Fire state officials on a whim? Well, sure. Though it turns out someone actually cares about process a little bit there. Still, it’s Alaska! So who’ll ever focus on it ?
[snip]
She thinks the trappings of office will bail her out any time she steps in it.
And the very, very worst thing about that executive branch Dick Cheney has spent the last eight years building is… she might be right.
But is there a more dangerous attitude in the world to plug into the Vice Presidency that Dick Cheney has created?
Imagine four to eight, or even 16 more years of Sarah Palin’s Mayberry-Plus Machiavellianism, with every petty, personal vendetta firing defended on grounds of “national security.”
Hell in the proverbial handbasket.
This was why Cheneyism needed to be nailed down during the Bush “administration.” Having failed to stamp it out, we’re now staring down the barrel of exactly what we didn’t want: Cheneyism as precedent, in the hands of a fundamentalist cipher, programmed by GOPAC.”
right church, wrong pew …
they may have told the old hero she brings an eye candy aspect to the campaign. but this is a 72 year old white guy with a fighter jock background – so me thinks he thinks she has done her job by cementing the Dobson vote and in his mind that means she should now be seen and not heard – good luck with that – he has met his match in pure craven opportunism
firedogs – her kid was so good at hockey, he went to a high school in Michigan because of a hockey development program – poor kid had a career ending shoulder injury, and so he joins the Army ?!?!?! why no college, why no encouraging your kid to further his education ?!?!? I think it’s ’cause his joining the Army further solidifies mommy’s fundy bona fides, happen to think the same could be said about the 17 year old’s pregnancy, it is not out of the question that Mommy made that ‘choice’ in the name of political expediency. I mean c’mon, this is a woman who endorsed her mother in law’s opponent in a small town mayor’s race just to keep the local goopers happy

And have I said how dreadful David Gregory is? CJ’s put the hex on him–good on ‘er.
Oh, and speakin’ of Lies and the lying liars who tell them…
L’il Joey Lie-berman…Quisling? Or Goldschlag? You decide.
Bush gave us each $1200
Sarah gave all Alaskans $1200
HMMMM!
and to perris@17
Not nearly so snappy as Jesus vs Pontius Pilate, but I noticed that at the end of McSame’s speech, when he issued the call to service, he said
the part after enlisting in the Armed Forces sounds remarkably like the definition of a community organizer, just what Palin and Giuliani elicited such jeers from the RNC audience about.
rumors are he got into some juvenile trouble and that’s how he ended up in the service.
so many rumors, so little time.
A subtle form of sexism don’t you think?
I heard that as well. From an organizer in Alaska who is on the Women’s Show on my community radio station now. She calls Alaska a “fourth world” country, a third world state in a first world country. Doesn’t paint a pretty picture of Alaska, primarily due to the governing of the state.
Merci cb12!
Indeed I have seen it. I worship the ground NPH glides over.
He’s everything I want in man — hot, talented, openly gay sings Sondheim like God.
Q: how many people here read the quotes i posted above and recognized who said them without looking it up?
There was probably a time when a self-declare “Christian” candidate might expect to be held to a higher standard of conduct… now, its the other way around. Declare yourself to a “Christian” and you get a free pass from all your own thuggish, unethical, amoral misconduct. It’s all a bit strange to me.
’self-declared’ ‘to be a Christian’ excuse me.. can’t type today (in 61)
Hi Selise!
I believe Barack Obama said all of those. True?
We know who said them. At this point it’s still either McC or Obama. Those are the choices. Pick one.
I’m guessing Barrack on O’liely
Don’t expect Ms. Palin to crash and burn. There is the very real possibility that the whole affair will be white washed before the election and the Republicans can use it to beat down the media with the victim narrative and demoralize Democrats who thought she would be held accountable in a deep red state.
Better to put it on the back burner and if anything turns up then fine but if she gets white washed then no big deal. It was to be expected.
People are spending way too much time discussing Palin and losing focus on the Republicans. This election isn’t about vilifying Sarah Palin. It is about Republican mismanagement versus Democrat solutions. Nobody at the national level is pointing out the disastrous borrow and spend policies of the Republicans. They are borrowing money via the deficit instead of curtailing global imperialism or raising taxes. When you spend money you have to either balance it with revenues or borrow it. The Republicans make a lot of their not raising taxes but they are borrowing about a half trillion a year. Someone needs to start shining a light on their phony ponzi schemes.
A: Barack Obama, yesterday during his interview with Bill O’Reilly on Fox.
there’s more:
in addition to the transcript (linked above) here’s a clip from aljazeera (youtube)
This year each alaskan will get over 2K
The organizer I referred to upthread said that now that Stevens and Young are in deep doo doo the earmarks that Palin has gone after will now dry up and the state’s primary source of revenue will be the taxes they’ve put on the oil companies. Talks about the remote villages that use honey buckets because there’s no infrastructure. The last stage of the white man wiping out the indigenous population in the United States. Sounds like we need a reincarnated Crazy Horse to deal with the white man.
Didn’t Gov. Palin brag about welcoming probe and about the fact that no subpoenas had been issued and none would be because she and all of her staff were cooperating in full?
clever firepups. thanks.
that WAS her American hat. Dincha know that the Repug definition of “freedom” is “freedom to suck the coffers dry for our own benefit”?
Was wondering if anyone has any more news to add to this:
“Here we go” — http://andrewsullivan.theatlan…..we-go.html
Basically, here’s the deal: the National Enquirer claims Palin had an affair with the First Dood’s former business partner, Scott Alan Richter. The post on Sully’s blog links to the public docket info site in AK, showing the alleged adulterer trying to get an emergency motion to have his divorce file sealed. IANAL, but it looks like the motion has been denied (on 9/4).
Presumably, the file may show that his ex gave the (alleged) adultery w/ Palin as one reason for the divorce? Or am I grasping at straws, here?
I can’t help it, now that it looks like she’s gonna skate on the Troopergate charges, since no subpoena is planned for her, and all the GOOPer forces are being brought to bear on quashing every inquiry until after they steal the next election, when it won’t matter anymore…
ET pointed us to this Alaska Blog friend on this issue …. may have traded military for jail time…
Unraveling
I had no idea he could sing!
Heh! I like it!
Gloria Steinem says [in LA Times] the only thing Palin shares with Hillary is a chromosome.
She ain’t no Olivia Benson, either.
didn’t they break the edwards scandal?
tastey
You couldn’t be any more on the mark.
It is also why the Democrats were foolish in not bringing the hammer down on Gonzales and his destruction of the DOJ.
Now all of those Bush DOJ stooges are going to be in place for this election when the Republicans begin spouting the John Fund(He’s out pimping his new book claiming that Democrats are the ones who steal elections) line about election fraud.
The same DOJ stooges that will pooh-pooh a McVeigh style militias attempts to assassinate Obama.

Here’s Vanity Fair’s timeline
I. am. not. happy. with. Obama.
Back on the street tonight and for the first time in almost three years I don’t have to watch my p’s and q’s.
This is what democracy looks like!
This is what freedom feels like!
This is what democracy sounds like!
Look out, motherfuckers, cuz we’re comin’!
Had enough of Palin headin over to the Silo
Catch you all later!!
Anarchistic inuit
surely you are not telling me that choosing a candidate to support means one has to disconnect from reality and repeat only propaganda?
i’d like to think that choosing a candidate to support also includes a commitment to hold that candidate accountable.
That’s the case for the Obama/Biden campaign to make and they have already built that superstructure. Now they just need to flesh it out in a way that the “narrative” can at least compete with the horrorshow that is the McCain/Palin ticket.
Let’s face it, the tabloid toots from the North is selling airtime faster than Pat Buchanan can draw nostalgic parallels to his own halcyon days (and that’s pretty freakin’ fast!)
SouthernDragon!
Do you mean the choice of the 17-year daughter’s marriage to the baby’s father?
Southern Dragon! Where are you guys going to be tonight? Baywalk?
Accountability – absolutely. However, those are the 2 choices. We may not like them but that’s it. I would rather have one than the other. We have no way to hold Obama accountable UNTIL he is in office. McC will never be accountable to anyone but the people who tell him what to do. I just don’t see any way around it.
An anarchist is anybody who doesn’t need a cop to tell him/her what to do.
Force is the weapon of the weak. My new sign for the edification of the visitors of BayWalk tonight.
Thanks to a young Chinese-American woman for stoking the fire in my belly.
It seems to me that the best reasons for keeping the pressure on Obama are A), to ensure accountability, and B), to push the Overton Window to the left. I am not about to try to drown out dissent by clapping and cheering louder.
that was a wonderful story, SD
You betch ‘um, Red Ryder.
Come on down. We’ve got signs or you can make your own.
Look for this radical leftist dood.
Accountability – absolutely. However, those are the 2 choices. We may not like them but that’s it. I would rather have one than the other. 1. i have more than 2 choices – and i plan on considering all of them.
2. i would rather have one than the other also but i fail to see what that has to do with me posting something that obama said yesterday.
3. i think you are mistaken – the most leverage we will ever have with obama is before the election, not after. i offer in evidence exhibit #1: the 2006 congressional elections.
4. agree complete wrt mccain
I am torn about this. Yes, Palin should be investigated for obstruction. Josh Marshall/TPM is one of several reporting groups who are investigating, but they are pointing to Newsweek and ABC for starters.
On the other hand, there is the idea of not making it too personal for fear of confusing the issue with prying into “family” matters and attacking family values—attacking the symbols as it were.
I found TPM’s clip of attacking the issues with an appropriate Lakeoff frame more effective:
http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=KZaUDKejZ_g
please excuse my ignorance, but i don’t understand your comment. would you explain? thanks!
I don’t know why she popped into my mind the other day. I guess I was more frustrated than I realized. Since then I’ve been on a tear. Feel like a cornered Bengal tiger bein’ held by both ears.
Well..forgetting the chestnut about never underestimating the intelligence of the American people, at the very best, the Palin choice could wind up being a wash, firing up the base and picking off a few low-info women voters vs. losing well-informed independents and firing up the Dem base. (And no doubt the Dems are fired up—volunteers are signing up in droves to go to Nevada for the GOTV effort as well as sending in their $5, $10 or $25)
As far as the scandalous personal stuff, who knows where that will lead. None other than Bill Maher, not exactly your typical conspiracy nut, disbelieves Sarah’s pregnancy story. As well, and, so far, it seems I am the only to have commented on this, if anyone watched the shots of Bridgett during Caribou Barbies speech, there were many times she looked sad and worried and even at times when she stoop up and applauded, the was an underlying sadness. Expect her to remain in solitude for the rest of the election as she will allegedly be seven months pregant by election day.
I wonder when Palin is going to release her tax returns.
I think they have turned “Christian” in that context into a codeword for authoritarian. My apologies to the other kind of Christian.
So, what are you advocating? He is still far superior to McCain/Palin.
Always helps to know the time, non? 8:30 – 10:00.
Some of my best friends went into the Army instead of jail.
“Got in a little
hometown jam
sent me off. . . “
Selise, I didn’t object to the posting of something Obama said. I didn’t agree with him, obviously. We can e-mail, write letters, yell at Obama, the DNC, etc. before the election but we don’t have leverage now. I get frustrated, too, but my country is in grave danger and I have to do the best I can.
I was responding to SD @ 70 ’s reference to Crazy Horse being reincarnated to assist the indiginuous people of alaska
Hiya, Pups,
Saturday is the day I usually write an Alaska Progressive Blog Roundup at my place. I missed it last Saturday, because I was at the State Fair, manning the AK Dems booth and recycling all day, with no wifi. So, today, I’ve got our Alaska primary, and Sarah to cover – two weeks worth.
During the last eight days, the hits at Alaska blogs have gone from thousands a day to kazillions. Plain fucking scary. The most fascinating thing, has been to see the national media come in and shake things up, things that complacent local editors had forced their writers to sit on or attenuate for years.
Was wondering if anyone has any more news to add to this:
yeah – if you read the docket entries, the “Emergency” Motion to Seal Records was Denied!!
there’s gold in that file, methinks. (”that file” being still in the public domain)
Hmmm. We may have just the solution! See perris @ 79. Maybe that’s a news source she trusts.
I think it will require evidence of a greater impropriety than providing cover for one or more of Palin’s screwed up kids to derail the McCain campaign. Troopergate might be sufficient but even then, some voters will rationalize it by saying she was only interested in protecting her family. I suspect Palin has a lot of skeletons in her closet and has made lots of enemies. We have a very short time frame but something is likely to crop up before the election.
If a documented example similar to the one in this link LindaR posted last night came to light, I think it would be game over.
the motion as been denied.
I’m waiting for the Sarah Palin buttoned up Barbie doll. When you change her clothes, you discover another scandal hidden underneath
I must respectfully disagree. I don’t think we’ll ever have more leverage on Obama than we do right now, as he is in a real dogfight (if you believe the polling data), and needs every vote-which means he needs us. Which means he needs to listen to us. Once elected, as demonstrated by Bush, he can ignore us at his leisure-so if we’re going to push the window of what is possible to the left, IMO, it has to be now.
Hey, Ed! Good to see you!
For those who complain about the press coverage of the Palins: Deal. Howard Dean went through it when his son and his buddies snuck into a country club to get at the liquor cabinet back in May of 2003. Did Dean go into hiding for a week? Of course not. And the media ripped into him much harder than they’re ripping into Palin.
agreed, we do. but that doesn’t mean we will agree on what that is.
i intend to withhold my support and vote from obama – unless he does something to earn it. that is the only leverage i can see – before or after the election. i understand that you see it differently, and i welcome you trying to convince me otherwise. especially if you can explain to me how we are going to have leverage after the election.
my impression was that you did object, glad to know that i was wrong about that.
So, you think she’s a dude?
lol!
Caribou Barbie
I like TBoggs’ “Sarah the Obama Slayer” nickname too.
thanks.
also as demonstrated by the 110th congress lead by the pelosi & reid team.
I caught that article last night just before I went to bed. It verges on being too far over the top. But it grasps some central items.
If she IS making such racist comments, more people will come forward, if they see her 82% approval rating plummeting.
People in Wasilla aren’t afraid of her, they’re afraid of the eliminationist Sarahbots. Several of us who are reporting negatively on Palin don’t usually lock our doors. But we are now. I even started locking my office door if I go to the john. And I don’t let my laptops or iPhone out of my sight for a second.
No I don’t think that she’s a dude. She’s invaded the psyche of American culture, and my post was a joke about that.
OT I was hoping you could answer an ot question for me. Is Alaska experiencing the same problems as much of the US with falling house prices and excessive mortgage defaults
Yikes!
well thank you for having the courage to be WITNESS for us.
that’ll show em
I hope he is listening. I send regular e-mails to his campaign complaining about various things. I don’t know anything else to do. I’m really torn about this because it means so much to me that we have finally chosen an AA to hold the highest office. I was afraid that I would never live to see that. I want more than I can express for him to succeed and remove this blight from our country once and for all.
Jon Klein of CNN (I think that’s the name) and CBS have pushed back against the bashing of the media at the RNC. I can’t find the link at the moment.
I hope this story from the L.A. Progressive get’s fleshed out with other sources:
“So Sambo beat the bitch!”
This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.
http://www.laprogressive.com/2…..%E2%80%9D/
There is another view.
Imagine a field of one candidate.
It’s Bob Barr – no.
It’s Ron Paul – no.
It’s John McCain – no.
It’s Barack Obama – no.
There are no alternatives this time, and, while it’s good to require our candidates to step up on issues, the only guy who might measure up, Jesus of Nazareth, missed the filing deadline.

I greatly appreciate your efforts and hope for the safety of you and everyone fighting the good fight.
Actually, I’m surprised there hasn’t been widespread remembrance of the Checkers speech by more than the RNC. Nixon was caught with a slush fund provided by the typical backdoor boys, and Ike was considering casting him from the train. The public appeal was apparently Nixon’s idea, or someone in his staff. He even requested that responses to his bathos be sent to the RNC, and they of course were largely favorable because there was no opposition; it was just an empty speech.
Checkers was the prop pup given his daughter, you may remember. “We’re going to keep her.” It played well in Peoria and the rest is history.
The RNC hopes it works as well this time. The other step is loudly whining about unfair treatment anytime any journalist anywhere asks a serious question.
We have an old retread suffering from dementia and an ethics-challenged tabloid cupcake, so we have to treat them gently.
What a country.
The difference between your quote and Palin’s actual quote has a very important distinction. A distinction that we should all become aware of. I was reading Somerby this morning. Before I did, to tell you the truth, I didn’t get the distinction either. The important part of Palin’s quote isn’t only that she lied about opposing the bridge. The important part is that she was making a heroine out of herself by lying about how she had supposedly told the congress to stick it. That is the really big lie.
Here’s the link to Somerby’s Daily Howler:

Time to take it to him. Like Obama said, it isn’t about him, it’s about all of us. I, for one, intend to hold him to it. Every day. All day.
I know, I was also making a joke by pretending to take you literally.
Not nearly as bad here yet. Mostly because when the sub-prime stuff was going on so heavily, the economy here was going well enough, people thought twice about refinancing. A lot of the mortgage companies here are local and too small to have gotten scarfed up by the biggies that were so flagrant in they way they marketed that stuff.
Hardest hit have been military families of color. They were targeted by outside companies, mostly from California.
Also, the humongous price of oil has pumped our treasury, through oil industry jobs, etc. Or family – me, Ms ET, Etette (starting off her professional life after college) and ET Jr (in college in Arcata CA) are getting, within the next two weeks, checks from the State of Alaska totalling $12,920. Just for living here…
That’s the kind of racial slur that just makes me crazy.
I know it’s out there but I find it hard to believe that anyone with an ounce of decency would say a thing like that – especially in public. Palin is disgusting.
I still think that baby is Bristol’s and she’s expecting her second.
You mean to tell me that when Gov. Palin first spoke to McCain, in March, she never said “Oh, by the way, I’m about to/ I’ve just given birth??”
‘Flight Attendant, what is this gooey stuff on my seat?’
‘Oh, that’s just some amniotic fluid…..’
If you won’t support your own party’s ticket because they aren’t perfect and don’t agree with all your views, then, as one of my friends said, run for the office your own self.
I’m tired of political perfection being the enemy of good candidates. We aren’t ever going to get a perfect candidate. I’d like to not have to choose the lesser of the evils as often as I’ve done, but this year isn’t one of those years.

tell it
I wonder if Obama would be willing to visit FDL for a little chat.
I got it, sometimes the translation gets lost in the toobzz so to speak.
Man, that would be a barn burner! *g*
Thanks
Context is of course everything.
Obama used the mention of the surge to build a case for the US to withdraw from Iraq. But that’s not something that the righties or the far-lefties eagerly pushing cherry-picked context-free quotes want us to know.
From the FOX transcript (note how O’Reilly tries to ambush Obama at every turn, and Obama’s responses):
stop with the facts, they are getting in the way
This is third person, unsourced innuendo. It is as bad as the smear e-mails about Obama avoiding police.
It is just not provable…..It should be avoided at all costs. It’s like the Rathergate matter. Get caught trucking in unprovable innuendo and it makes your credibility come into question.

The story the McCain camp is telling is that they’re not going to let Palin do interviews until she can be brought up to speed on policy matters. I’d be willing to bet it is also out of fear that she’ll make some unscripted remark so patently offensive they can’t spin their way out of it.
Phoenix Woman-
I used your inspired idea for a Mansion Accomplished banner, and used the phrase on a cake that I brought to RevDebs last weekend. Deb wanted to acknowledge in some way McTheusla’s b-day and I thought that phrase was perfect.
The bakery called the day after I ordered just to makes sure I really wanted that particular phrase.
Perfection can be the enemy of the good, without a doubt…yet that is no reason to not try to push Obama. The “Republican-lite” strategy advocated by many Democrats will never work, as the voters can smell the inauthenticy, and would prefer the genuine article. Bold, inspired leadership toward a vision disaffected Americans can embrace is the key, and Obama cannot be allowed to sacrifice that for political expediency, IMO.
Somebody might have a “Sambo” problem. As well as a insulting Hillary Clinton problem. So Sexist! So angry. Vicious as a blogger.
Yea, sorta like John Kerry wounded himself to get a purple heart or defamed all veterans. . .
Lucille, you don’t do your daddy’s will!
Remember when Howard Dean’s kid got in trouble back in June of 2003 when he was with some buddies who broke into the local country club (where IIRC some of their dads were members) so they could get at the liquor cabinet? (He was the driver of the getaway vehicle.)
Was there ANY handwringing from the press or other quarters about how we must leave the poor abused Dean family alone and how this was a private matter and it was unseemly for anyone outside the family to be prying into it?
Of course not.
Instead, we got pundit after pundit confidently and gloatingly predicting that this was the end of Dean’s campaign — right as he was headed to St. Paul’s Radisson for the first DNC candidate get-together. (It turned out to be a mere speed bump, as Dean would go on to his biggest crowds and most lucrative part of the campaign.)
Had to get that off my chest.
I woke up this morning, Lucille was not in sight
Asked my friends about her, all their lips were
tight
Thanks PW, I concur with what Obama said in the interview. Is it possible that you intended to reply to a comment other than the one I made @ 110?
Well ever since then I realized that soldiers just put in for their own purple hearts so it is no big accomplishment.(Snark)

Here’s Obama, taking the case for withdrawal to O’Reilly’s viewers, essentially saying that while the surge and the Shia cease-fire has cut violence, it hasn’t done diddly to stabilize the political situation, which is something that the Iraqis must do on their own, and not have it imposed from outside.
At the very least, he got a few folk to switch away from McCain to listen to him, and these are the very people most likely to listen to him.
Christy is upstairs!
Accountability For Bush Violations Of Rule Of Law? Maybe, Maybe Not…
Sorry, R — I was responding to other folk and I thought I’d clicked the right “Reply” button. Apparently I didn’t!
Does anyone remember what Media Apparatchick “Bubble” Brokaw originally said about Watergate ??
About Troopergate, he has already divinely opined that “it won’t amount to very much”.
Perhaps “Bubble” doesn’t think Abuse of Power” is any big thing, and so our definitions might be based on different concepts of the ideals of a self-governing society. One thing is certain, if Obama gets elected, Bubble will be paying more in taxes… but is that any reason to give up on investigations into the possible abuse of power? After all, Watergate was not about a “third-rate burglary”, but about being above and beyond the law. Troopergate certainly appears to exhibit the identical mindset of Watergate – abuse power than cover-up the abuse.
And giving McCheese the applause, ratifying his judgment for the Surge™.
The TV spots will be like a blanket.
Good point, PW.

yo, I was witcha
If al-Sadr had not called a cease-fire in August 2007 we’d be in the same place today we were in July 2007. IMO, that’s not the surge succeeding “beyond our wildest dreams.” That’s al-Sadr shifting to a political solution rather than force. Politically, the Irakis are still in July 2007.
You can take that to the bank.
Afuckingmen!
That’s what Obama was getting at: Violence is indeed down, in part because of the Shia truce called by al-Sadr, but politically there’s been no improvement and won’t be so long as we’re there.
The response is to use this:
Sorry, Phoenix Woman. I fogot to say “hi.”
But that’s not how the Rethugs and media are going to play it. We’re dealing with thieves and liars here, the lowest human life forms.
I think TeamMcCain is only interested in the part where Obama says “it succeed beyond our wildest dreams.”
If TeamMcCain was obliged to include the next part in his ads… But I don’t see it.
It’s the soundbite from Heaven for them.
Self fulfilling prophesy
Our ads would include the rest of the soundbite. Simple.
In the words of the GOP’s favorite pre-Rush radio guy, Paul Harvey: “And now you know — the REST of the story.”
Off to do stuff that ain’t gonna get done if I keep sitting here.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
You and be both! One must wonder just how the Palins with five children to support, and Sarah making roughly $79,000 as mayor of Wasilla, and $82,000 as governor, are managing with hubby working only part time. I seem to remember that they have 3 homes? Could be wrong about this.
Have seen zip about their financial status.
The whole “it’s not the crime, it’s the coverup!” line was what the GOP and their media buds used to justify going after Clinton for the various FauxGates.
But the thing was, in Watergate, there were actual crimes for which people like John Mitchell, Nixon’s AG, went to jail. With Clinton there wasn’t.
Exactly.
i’m not looking for a perfect candidate. a good one would suit me just find.
even a moderately lousy one would be ok, if only there was a mechanism for accountability.
morning PW.
that’s not an argument i’m comfortable with – blaming the iraqis for the problems we caused and they are having to live with is not ok with me. :(
well, i don’t care about his sex life.
but i’d still like to see him on trial at the hague.
Trig is the new Checkers.
– Ronald Reagan
What it boils down to, Selise, is this:
If the surge is working — for whatever reason — then why are we still in Iraq? Why aren’t we letting the Iraqis run their own country?
That’s why the Republicans, if they’re smart, aren’t going to be running tons of ads with “Obama says the surge is working” as the main theme — because again, if the surge is working, why are we still there?
Obama’s point is that while violence is down for various reasons (and he cites the cooperation of the Shia military groups as one reason), the political situation isn’t any better than it was pre-surge, and won’t be so long as we’re in Iraq.
Any particular reason?
He may even have a Republican cloth coat! (Or at least a cloth diaper.)
That’s what freaks me out.
Here’s what she’s copping to — boasting of, really:
Her water broke at 4 AM. Instead of rushing to the Dallas hospital — and mind you, she already knew that Trig was a special-needs baby who was only 7 1/2 months along — she gave her speech, probably wearing Depends (even overnight menstrual pads wouldn’t suffice to hold back the flow), then took an eight-hour flight back to Anchorage (with a connecting flight in Seattle) — and then, rather than go to the Anchorage hospital, drove herself ANOTHER forty-five minutes to the Mat-Su Hospital in Wasilla. At this point it’s been over fourteen hours since her water broke.
Oh, and by the way, airlines get very nervous about women passengers in their third trimester of pregnancy — and not just for the baby’s sake. Blood pressure is elevated in women during pregnancy – sometimes fatally (a condition called pre-eclampsia, which as the name suggests often is the precursor for full-blown eclampsia), and flying can exacerbate that as well as cause/exacerbate edema (swelling due to fluid buildup). She shouldn’t have flown to Dallas in the first place, as that may have triggered her premature labor.
Also there is that 14 hours where besides the risk of herniation of the umbilical cord the second risk is infection risk for both the mother and baby. A premi special needs baby with ruptured membranes x 14 hours ……. Any one heard how long the baby stayed inpatient? AND that facility did not have a NICU which is a specialized ICU for critical newborns. Sepsis is serious stuff……
I ran this scenario through a bunch of my nurse friends, some who worked in the NICU or OB said…… wow how do I say it without saying they thought it implied intentional life threatening risk to the baby.
That’s what a lot of my medical-professional friends thought, too: de facto abortion via malignant neglect, which allows her to terminate the fetus without having to officially jeopardize her anti-choice reputation.
Hi wayyy into EPUland PW.
I’ve tried to hold back on this, and I simply can’t stay silent.
There’s something else, something very much akin to what I have witnessed as a sportsfan-mom for many years. Here, decades later, it still freaks me out, especially when I read the occasional references in the news to dust-ups between parents “supporting” rival teams, or between out-of-control parents and officials, or even involving verbal and physical attacks on the players themselves.
It is ugly, hurtful, sometimes even physically harmful, certainly emotionally wrenching, particularly vicious, and unwarranted anywhere, much less when associated with childrens’ sporting events.
The memories of some of those supposedly grown-up fans are still with me, and to this day make me cringe with outrage and disbelief.
I speak, as you probably have already guessed, of the particular “brand” of zealot Sarah Palin seems proud to claim for herself, when she bellows in public that her sports/parent personality is akin to that of a pit bull, only with lipstick.
First off, she is being unfair to pit bull dogs, many of which have wonderful personalities.
More importantly by far, her proud proclamation reveals a personality type surely every person here is familiar with: the dreaded, brutish, epithet-yelling type of spectator who makes everyone around them shudder with disgust.
Sarah Palin, your idea of mothering bears little resemblance to what I remember, or what I tried to impart to my own children.
The special horror is, she doesn’t seem to “get it”.
Thank you Pheonix Woman. Anyone can pretty much take anything a candidate says and make it look bad out of context.
the more I hear it lately, in reference to these 2 I can only assume that the definition of “maverick” must now include reference to lying sack of shit
Fight like hell NOW, or prepare the concession speech.
It’s Florida in Alaska, NOW. http://kagro-x.dailykos.com/ Sep 6 11:55.
I think you should just reframe this as “bona fundes”.
The interesting thing is, I went to high school with Sarah’s lawyer, Thomas Van Flein. My brother emailed me yesterday asking if he was the same Tom Van Flein we went to school with who graduated in 1981. I wrote back that I think he is.
This whole tawdry mess isn’t a presidential episode, it’s a Jerry Springer show brought to life.
“I should say this, that Pat doesn’t have a mink coat. But she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat, and I always tell her she would look good in anything.” Richard Nixon (1962 Checker’s Speech)
“At first they had me in a bunch of furs,” she said of the photo shoot. “Yeah, I have furs on my wall, but I don’t wear furs. I had to show them my bunny boots and my North Face clothing.” -Sarah Palin on her Vogue photo shoot
But the problem is Sarah, you DO wear FUR…and quite expensive ones at that. But you do look good in them.
