…In December 1996, Emmons told her hometown newspaper, the Frontiersman, that Palin three times asked her — starting before she was sworn in — about possibly removing objectionable books from the library if the need arose.
Emmons told the Frontiersman she flatly refused to consider any kind of censorship….
When the matter came up for the second time in October 1996, during a City Council meeting, Anne Kilkenny, a Wasilla housewife who often attends council meetings, was there….
“Sarah said to Mary Ellen, ‘What would your response be if I asked you to remove some books from the collection?” Kilkenny said.
“I was shocked. Mary Ellen sat up straight and said something along the line of, ‘The books in the Wasilla Library collection were selected on the basis of national selection criteria for libraries of this size, and I would absolutely resist all efforts to ban books.’”
Palin didn’t mention specific books at that meeting, Kilkenny said.
Well, isn’t that interesting? "If the need arose" to remove books — what "need"?!? The Russians will invade if we don’t get rid of Harry Potter? My preacher will will boot me out of church unless you remove all Judy Blooms at my command? Get rid of J.D. Salinger or the world will end? And then the librarian had to pass a loyalty test from Palin? Good luck with your crusade, and may your firings be swell! I do love the smell of a loyalty oath in the morning, don’t you?
Don’t you think Sarah Palin had some books in mind when she asked those questions — on three separate occasions — about banning books in the public library? Which books, you ask?
I think someone should. And fast.
The American Library Association has designated September 27th through October 4th as this year’s Banned Book Week. I think we owe it to the ALA to get Sarah Palin on record as to what books she thought should be banned, don’t you?
Now, I know she’ll be hiding out in Alaska next week, cramming Veep knowledge into her head, with no media availability in sight. But on the off chance one of our readers were to run into her at the grocery store or the car wash, but probably not the book store, why not ask: "Sarah, I’m thinking about harassing my town librarian into banning books. Which ones do you recommend we toss? And why?"
Here’s the ALA’s list of 2007’s frequently questioned authors, which includes such harmful thinkers as Mark Twain and Toni Morrison. They also list a number of frequently questioned books. Makes me want to do a big purchase for my local library — which ones are your favorites? Personally, I’m a fan of To Kill A Mockingbird, and cannot believe it is on the list.
So, what would Sarah ban? Shouldn’t the public know the answer to that question well before we vote?

Quick, get rid of the gay penguin book and no one gets hurt!
Pardon the early o/t, Christy, but are there any western pups who might provide additional info?

Quickie google doesn’t indicate political party……if Dem, bodes badly. Iow, is this the latest technique for stealing the election?
An Inconvenient Truth and anything by Noam Chomsky.
And Harry Potter of course.
“98. Girls and Sex by Wardell Pomeroy”
I wonder if this is the book that drove Bristol to, you know, do it.
I’m still baffled over the “if the need arose.” Can someone please get her on the record as to what said need was?
I wore out my last ALA “Banned Books Week” t-shirt. Obviously, it’s time for another.
I’m still baffled over the “if the need arose.”
waiting for Dog to return her calls?
Good timing on the ALA link, then!
No doubt, she will:
Replace the Encyclopedia Brittanica with Conservapedia, printed out, and stuck into 3-ring binders
Replace Lord of the Rings with the Hal Lindsay Left Behind series
Replace A Brief History of Time with her pastor’s even more brief history of time…
Boy howdy, you can totally see why they’d want these out of the library, can’t you:
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
Harry Potter (Series) by J.K. Rowling
Forever by Judy Blume
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
O.o
Sarah would obviously ban the New Testmanent.
That Jesus guy’s forgiveness message is antithetical to the righteous and vindictive.
Who’dat?
and she’d ban the New Testament, too….
Ban takes the worry out of being close(d-minded)
I wouldn’t mind if she burned a certain book by Corsi
Palin: Ignorence is close to Godliness.
I suggest starting with a few marshmallow questions for Sarah Palin.
What was the last book you read?
What is on your list of books to read?
Do you have a favourite author?
Who read to your children, you or your husband?
What were some of your children’s favourite books?
Do you own a library card?
Of course, everyone knows that libraries are socialist institutions.
Yes, who in their right mind would think that everyone having access to learning would be a good idea. *g* Some days, I despair of things ever getting better… SIGH
Oh, the irony! Tee hee.
No one is going to answer, no matter how quickly the question is asked. The McCain “campaign” has put a total journalism lockdown on Palin, no questions will be answered of any kind. No press conferences. Nothing.
Their stated reason is the media is on a smear campaign, but the media didn’t get her daughter pregnant or lie to them repeatedly or make up complete bullshit about the Alaska National Guard.
The national media has now been officially punked over Palin. What are they going to do?
The could tag-team on McCain at his next press conference. Never let a question go by at least four successive reporters, just beat the shit out of him continually until Palin finally faces the music.
They won’t, they can’t act in solidarity like that and they’re completely cowed weenies anyway. But it still worth noting, and the Democrats would never, ever get away with it.
The Handmaid’s Tale
Because of how much she resembles some of the more unsavory characters.
For me, Catch-22 and Slaughterhouse 5.
I was surprised that The Handmaid’s Tale wasn’t on the list …
Well, I see my favorites “Lord Rump’s Spanking Good Time,” “John Thomas’ Bedtime Tales,” “How to Sip Good Brandy,” and Emma Ready’s “Ins and Outs of My Life” did not make the list. *g*
But seriously Tom Jones, Moll Flanders, Apuleius’ Golden Ass, or anything by Sade didn’t make the list. I guess these people aren’t real tuned into classic literature.
“No one is going to answer, no matter how quickly the question is asked. The McCain “campaign” has put a total journalism lockdown on Palin, no questions will be answered of any kind. No press conferences. Nothing.”
Heck it might appear in a book and then have to be banned
Sorry, just read the previous CHS post down the home page, it essentially says what my comment above does. Please have a great weekend, Ms. Harden-Smith.
*wheeze* That really should have come with a spew warning… *G*
McCain is on record very recently stating that the US Economy is fundamentally sound (McCain = Bush – focus on it). This is McClueless channeling Bush.
Todays Headlines:
Oh hey now. He’s very forgiving of Republicans…
She hasn’t figured out how to ban newspaper articles or tv broadcasts yet but the campaign is working on it
Galileo’s Daughter. bwahahahaa!
OT – there will be a statement today, of some sort, by the state Senator in Alaska heading the Trooper-Gate investigation of Mrs. Palin.
And the final report is going to be moved up from October 31 to an earlier date.
Republicans cry foul (I was saving the most surprising part for last – heh).
Hi Waccamaw. I read the article and noticed that there is a new voter registration system in place. I also notice that Wayne Munster the deputy officer who has been there for years apparently will be standing in as the lead. I found a document that could yield some interesting fruit but I didn’t have time to scan it.

I can’t tell if this is rovian or preventative rovian antidote because I don’t know CO politics…
I hope America gets the message that they have to hide their veep because she can’t answer questions and the press (?) might find out.
LOL!!!

Bio of Anne Kilkenny from the 2004 Conference of Alaskans:
question about timing: was this investigation already going on when she was picked?
sorry, I know this is a basic question that’s probably already been answered when I wasn’t paying attention/computer down. thx in advance.
When I see posts like this I’m reminded of a new story I guess 20 plus years ago now. Some Tennessee mother had sued the school because she did not like the books in the library and what her child had been required to read. I found her statement to be one of the worst statements ever:
Very, very, very scary statement.
GO BEARS!!!
She has a Social Science BA from the University of California, Berkeley
Don’t f*ck with the hippies!
Some of this stuff is kind of overblown but definitely worth banning
It’s in some book called the bible.
Let it go Christy, she’s a ruse. The more inflammatory her previous actions, the more bright and shiny the attraction is to try and bring her down; and that’s wasted effort, non germane to the task of removing Republican rule.
I think it was Booker T. who said, “You can’t keep a man down without staying down with him.”
In this case I would add the corollary, you can’t take a woman down without getting down with her.
Good set of questions. I’m interested in our answers to them, so here are my answers, if anyone cares.
What was the last book you read?
God’s Harvard (A history of Patrick Henry College), and Karen Armstrong’s The Battle for God. I’m trying to understand the fundamentalist weltanschauung. I suppose that using that word will get me sent to labor education camp.
What is on your list of books to read?
For recreational reading the next book up is Richard Rhodes’ The Making of the Atomic Bomb. For continuing self-education I’m working through Roger Penrose’s The Road to Reality and Steven Jay Gould’s Structure of Evolutionary Theory but those are both long-term projects.
Do you have a favourite author?
It varies depending on the genre and my mood.
Who read to your children, you or your spouse?
I did. My ex- wasn’t into reading to the kids.
What were some of your children’s favourite books?
One of the great things about having kids is getting to look at children’s literature again. Anything Dr. Seuss is great, but Horton Hatches the Egg and Green Eggs and Ham are really special.
Do you own a library card?
You betcha I do.
Palin’s nomination has been great for Alaska. It would not surprise me if the whole thing isn’t completely whitewashed.
My first wife (since deceased) was a librarian and listening to her stories about attempted censorship in Alabama made me have chills. It also made me appreciate the work that librarians do in protecting our basic freedoms.
Librarians really are on the front lines and are unsung heroes and heroines in our society.
hah. Phillp Pulman’s The Golden Compass(and therefore the entire His Dark Materials trilogy) Still one of my favorite sets of books, not only for the steampunk but for the sheer take on old concepts.
It’s a wonder the Dune saga never made the list, those book have sex, violence and general questioning of ALL religions and religions used for not so good purposes. *snickers* But i bet Dobson’s FOTF bit has them on their little list. And the GOOD guys are futuristic ‘zensunni’ muslims. All the more reason not to like ‘em at all in the modern world.
question about timing: was this investigation already going on when she was picked?
oh yeah. (she was only picked 7 to 9 days ago).
foothillsmike @44 – The report also mentioned that, all of a sudden, witnesses are refusing to testify voluntarily, and are demanding subpoeanaes. Also, that Mrs. Palin is trying for a change of venue, of sorts, asking/petitioning/demanding that some different entity conduct the investigation.
thankee!
the band, Heart, has demanded the McSame
PainPalin campaign stop using their song, Barracuda:Good for them. I thought it was bizarre that OTOH the Republicans were trying to sell Palin as a Goody Two-Shoes and on the other playing up her Barracuda persona by using this song.
It appears to me that the rethugs have no respect for intellectual property. How many times in this campaign have they used songs of people who do not wish them to be used. Somebody needs to smack them upside the head.
I’m sure that if they read sci-fi and fantasies by anyone other than LeHaye, most would be banned.
Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbert, Gordon Dickinson, Robert Heinlein, Phillip Dick, Robert Silverberg and many many others covered topics and wrote such they probably are high on the list of books to be gotten rid of. Just maybe not in the Top 100.
How many times in this campaign have they used songs of people who do not wish them to be used?
Every time, pretty much. I haven’t heard anything from the Earth, Wind & Fire group yet – but it was only just last night.
Artists tend to not fall into the Republican/authoritarian mindset, thereby severely limiting the prospects of Repub’s ever finding music from *any* artist anywhere (with the exception of Ted Nugent) which they might use without fear of having their asses sued off.
I doubt that Palin had specific books in mind. I think she just had a check list of important things to accomplish, kind of a reactionary pol checklist to make sure she had all her
ducksmoose in a row. Shoring up her credentials. Item xx: Power to ban books? Check.Hugh,
Thanks for your ideas and responses to celtic diva’s first post at fdl yesterday. She was unable to comment back much during the session, because fdl was even more down early yesterday in Alaska than it was elsewhere.
Sarah’s list, eh?
The problem is that you have to send a demand letter before you can sue. If they stop using Barracuda now that Heart has demanded it, no suit. I’m not sure if they are liable for paying royalties on their use or not. I would expect so.
True, true. The modern scifi writers are ignored as well, by the fundies. Probably for the same reason. I’ve read a good chunk of those on your little list as well, but i’ve been a voracious reader of scifi/fantasy since i was a kidlet. I was lucky in that my high school library actually carried quite a few of them! It was a conservative little town, but it seems the librarians had full sway since any and all of the major banned books were still taught in my various advanced english courses. Thank GOODNESS.
mods! mods! clean up in aisle 41!!!
absolutely! unsung heroes
Or, as Mark Twain might text, were he with us – 707
Palin chose the right political party!
Karl Rove.
Oh, and hi ET- been enjoying reading your blog and other AK blogs (Celtic Diva) etc.
ET’s got some good stuff there, peeps! As does CD.
New Glenn W. Smith upstairs!
Open Letter to Network and Cable Pundits: This Is Not A Game
Song of Solomon? I made my brother read some of that at my wedding.
It’s true. And doing a search on Palin and banned books pulled up many a librarian commenting on the issue.
I’m betting that Demon Haunted World would be on the list, because it sounds like one of those Satanist things, dontcha know?
Even if Palin knew what it was, of course, she’d still want to ban it. It’s about all the things she doesn’t believe in – science, knowledge, and the freedom to pursue them.
First on Sarah’s ban list: The Real McCain.
ET,
I very much enjoyed her post, and would love to hear more. Couldn’t post at the time to let her know. Perhaps, you could pass it along?
Book Lovers for Obama/Biden 08!
Did you know that there are about 300,000 librarians & library staff in the US? I mean, that we know of. And how many private libraries are there? And book lovers. And and readers!!! woohoo!
The Republican Party – The Party of Not Too Much Education
Obviously it was Harry Potter, she wouldn’t want her sweet children getting any ideas about magic!
Rachel Maddow had a great quote a few weeks back about a librarian who had been arrested outside a McCain campaign appearance for holding up a sign that said “McCain = Bush.” Rachel said something like, “As a librarian, Ms. Jane Doe is also a trained democracy superhero.”
Sarah Palin’s banned book list.
This is a rumour, not a fact. The list is a compendium of books banned at some time somewhere in the USA.
I think it worth noting that Laura Bush was a librarian, and admits to having read at least one book well known for having been banned.
