The army as an alternative to jail may or may not be a good option. Vandalism doesn’t usually involve a possible death sentence. Making a policy of getting people out of jail because military recruiters can’t otherwise meet their recruitment goals raises serious questions about the popularity of a war.

Using your son to prove your fitness as a vice presidential candidate, by boasting of his enlistment in the army and impending trip to Iraq, knowing he chose the army as his alternative to jail, is both hypocritical and stupid. Hypocritical because you know that the only reason he’s headed to Iraq is that he had no choice. Stupid because it’s going to come out.

What kind of mother risks the emotional stability of her kids by exposing them to national and international ridicule to further her career? What kind of candidate thinks it is ok for her to tout her children’s positive achievements, but off limits for the opponents to discuss their more problematic behaviors? You can’t have it both ways.

And what does this all tell us about the presidential candidate who makes impulsive decisions based on his gut feelings? I think McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin has done us all a giant favor. He’s shown us that he’s willing to take risky decisions, risky important decisions, with shoddy data gathering and analysis. It’s better we know that and see it clearly before November.

Agree with his analysis, around here I’ve already started calling Palin “The gift that’ll just Keep On Giving™!”

As an Alaskan, I am writing to give all of you some information on Sarah Palin, Senator McCain’s choice for VP. As an Alaska voter, I know more than most of you about her and, frankly, I am horrified that he picked her.

The most accurate description of her is red neck. Her husband works in the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay and races snow mobiles. She is a life time member of the NRA and has worked tirelessly to allow indiscriminate hunting of wildlife in Alaska, particularly wolves and bears. (This is with Fish and Game, so there are more moose and such for people to hunt.) She has spent millions of Alaska state dollars on aerial hunting of these predators from helicopters and airplanes, dollars that should have been spent, for example, on Alaska’s failing school system.We have the lowest rate of high school graduation in the country. Not all of you may think aerial predator hunting is so bad, but how anyone (other than Alaska wolf-haters, of which there are many, most without teeth), could think this use of funds is appropriate is beyond me. If you want to know more about the aerial hunting travesty, let me know and I will send some links to informative web sites.

She has been a strong supporter of increased use of fossil fuels, yet the McCain campaign has the nerve to say she has ‘green’ policies. The only thing green about Sarah Palin is her lack of experience. She has consistently supported drilling in ANWR, use of coal-burning power plants (as I write this, a new coal plant is being built in her home town of Wasilla), strip mining, and almost anything else that will unnecessarily exploit the diminishing resources of Alaska and destroy its environment.
(And she was quoted as saying, ” “I’m not one though who would attribute it to being manmade,” in reference to Global Warming. According to Newsmax, and referred to in an article by the Associated Press.)

Prior to her one year as governor of Alaska, she was mayor of Wasilla, a small red neck town outside Anchorage.The average maximum education level of parents of junior high school kids in Wasilla is 10th grade.

Unfortunately, I have to go to Wasilla every week to get groceries and other supplies, so I have continual contact with the people who put Palin in office in the first place. I know what I’m talking about.

These people don’t have a concept of the world around them or of the serious issues facing the US. Furthermore, they don’t care. So long as they can go out and hunt their moose every fall, kill wolves and bears and drive their snow mobiles and ATVs through every corner of the wilderness, they’re happy. I wish I were exaggerating.

Sarah Palin is currently involved in a political corruption scandal. She fired an individual in law enforcement here because she didn’t like how he treated one of her relatives during a divorce. The man’s performance and ability weren’t considered; it was a totally personal firing and is currently under investigation. While the issue isn’t close to the scandal of Ted Steven’s corruption, it shows that Palin isn’t ’squeaky clean’ and causes me to think there may be more issues that could come to light. Clearly McCain doesn’t care.

When you line Palin up with Biden, the comparison would be laughable if it weren’t so serious. Sarah Palin knows nothing of economics (admittedly a weak area for McCain), or of international affairs, knows nothing of national government, Social Security, unemployment, health care systems – you name it. The idea of her meeting with heads of foreign governments around the world truly frightens me.

In an increasingly dangerous world, with the economy in shambles in the US, Sarah Palin is uniquely UNqualified to be vice president. John McCain is not a young man. Should something happen to him such that the vice president had to step in, it would destroy our country and possibly the world to have someone as inexperienced and inappropriate as Sarah Palin. The choice of Palin is a cheap shot by McCain to try to get Hillary supporters to vote for him. when McCain introduced her today, Palin had the nerve to compare herself with Hillary and Geraldine Ferraro. Sarah Palin, you are no Hillary Clinton.

To those of you who, like me, supported Hillary and were upset that she did not get the nomination, please don’t think that Sarah Palin is a worthy substitute. If you supported Hillary, regardless of what you think the media and the democratic party may have done to undermine her campaign, the person to support now is Obama, not Sarah Palin. To those of you who are independent or undecided, don’t let the choice of Palin sway you in favor of McCain. Choosing her shows how unqualified McCain is to be president. To those of you who are conservative, I guess you have no choice for president. But please try to see how the poor choice of Palin tells us a great deal about McCain’s judgment.

While the political posturing inherent in the choice of Palin is obvious, the more serious issue is the fact that the VP is, literally, a heartbeat away from the presidency. Sarah Palin is totally and unequivocally unqualified to be vice president, let alone president.

I know this is a lengthy and emotional email, but the stakes are high. I thought it might help for all of you, regardless of political affiliation, to know something about Palin from someone who has to live with her administration in Alaska on a daily basis.

I somehow get the feeling that Palin is Karl Rove with boobs….. that is the part that scares me……

As a mother…. of children that had special needs, that she would expose them…. that ambition is more important than her children…..

The higher a pol climbs, the more likely that they are ruled by ambition. Most of them love their families but most also use them as props. Having said that, since nominating Palin, the McCain campaign has really raised the bar in regard to exploiting kids for political gain. I know it’s all part of pandering to social conservatives but you would think even they could see through it.

She’s my ex-governor. The base will never accept her. Also she ran clean campaigns. Before he became governor, McGreevey ran against her and just barely lost. Afterward he kept thanking her for running a clean race and sticking to the issues. I remember thinking “why does he keep saying that so much?” In retrospect, at the time it wasn’t common knowledge that McGreevey was gay. But there wasn’t even a whispering campaign by her surrogates. Unlike what Bush & McCain would have you believe,candidates really can control that shit if they want. By the time McGreevey ran and won the next time, it seemed like everybody knew he was gay. Except his wife. Nasty, nasty divorce . I digress. But Whitman comes from that old-time line of northeast republican. Fiscally conservative, pretty liberal socially. Not as liberal as, well, liberals. But liberal enough to have no place in the national GOP. Whitman is to be commended for quitting the Bush administration. They put her front and center to peddle the bullshit that there was nothing wrong with the air quality at ground zero.

I thought all the kids and mom looked like the deer who had already been run over last night.

No offense to you, ET, but I have to say, the more I learn about what goes on in our 49th state these past few days, the more I come to treasure the spirit of our 50th. The difference is striking.

I just don’t see how a mom of a kid in that situation can stand there and say “John McCain is just the kind of commander in chief I want.” To say that, to put her daughter through this public ordeal, to shamelessly exploit them… I question whether she likes those kids. She’ll have no trouble balancing the roles of her job and being a mother ’cause she doesn’t give a shit.

Naturally, at the outset she appeared compatible, I recall she favored allowing polluters to monitor their own compliance with environmental laws. When she learned the Bush/Cheny junta’s real goal was to gut the department and basically eliminate all government oversight, she must have been appalled.

Regarding McGreevey, I remember reading at the time that being gay was the cover story. In reality, he was under investigation and likely to be indicted on corruption charges if he stayed in office. The article I read noted that New Jersey has a history of corrupt government surpassed only by Illinois and Louisiana. Being from Illinois, I considered that quite a feather in our cap.

why surprised me was the redneckedness that I’m seeing or reading about. I know it’s not everyone. But I just never associated “redneck” with “Alaska.”

Alaska bloggers got the information out fairly quickly, places like firedoglake, Huffpo, TPM and KOS helped turn some in the MSM onto how totally unqualified and dangerous Palin is, all did a good job.

Most impressive – to me – was this place. With just a few posts from either me or celtic diva – the fdl crew gathered facts about Palin and issued them in cogent essays.

I was a very complacent Democrat in Oregon….. my state senator was my Vet and where I lived it was pretty blue….. it was moving to Arizona where we have radical pols like Sheriff Joe and Russel Pierce with their wacky hate laws and violations of civil rights….. That got me fired up…… we fight harder because we have to….. we have to fight just to keep what we have……

How about that FEMA? They did a heckuva job moving sick folks out of harm’s way in advance of Hurricane Gustav. Something like almost 250 evacuees were airlifted into Little Rock for hospital care here ahead of the storm.

Er, but Director Chertoff … didn’t anybody think about getting those sick folks home AFTER the storm?

Apparently not. Or so we are told by a reliable hospital source. Take St. Vincent Infirmary. It received 63 patients at two locations. The storm’s long gone, but some 57 or so evacuees are still on hand. Does FEMA have a plan to get these folks home? It does not. In fact, I’m told that during a conference call this week, FEMA officials suggested to hospital officials that it could just turn out the able-bodied to homeless shelters.

Kid you not.

Ya’ll still thank your lucky stars that Mississippi is a state…? ;-)

Last week, when Ms ET and I were out canvassing for Obama in Wasilla, we were going through some stuff she remembered about when Sarah was mayor. She kept ribbing me about the dozens of awful things Palin did, that I’d completely washed out of my mind.

At least, when she reminded me, I remembered them So, it probably wasn’t an aging issue. More like that back then I concentrated my concern about Palin solely on what she was doing in regards to the teachng of creationism in the schools. We were able to keep that from happening, so my mind moved on.

The irony is Mark Pryor sits beside Joe Lieberman and Mary Landreiu on the Senate Homeland Security Committee.

And they all do absolutely nothing.

I’m glad to know it’s supposed to be a crime, even if nothing will ever happen.

Medicare, CMS and JCAHO have standards on discharge planning. You cannot discharge a patient to a homeless shelter. If that person has some health coverage if it is Medicare, Medicaid or commercial insurance, there are strict laws governing this. Dumping charges could remove that facility from Medicare reimbursement.

AND healthcare staff who participate in Dumping also are complicit in the crime and can be held liable on their own.

Mr. Herbert thinks the Republicans are “Running From Reality,” and that from the speakers’ faux populist gibberish, you would never have known that the Republicans have used their titanic power to lead the country to its present sorry state.
