How is it possible for a politician as cynical as John McCain to get away with a statement as arrogant and narcissistic as this:
"I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else’s. I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency; for its faith in the wisdom, justice and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again. I wasn’t my own man anymore. I was my country’s."
Unselfish? Putting country first? Whom does he think he’s kidding?
For the last year, we have watched McCain sell out his principles on issue after issue, including, of all things, his opposition to torture. He’s changed positions on virtually every policy for which he once claimed to stand above others. He’s pandered to and now totally caved to the religious right, extremists he once abhored as a threat to the nation.
The media, who once worshipped his candor and openness now condemn his evasiveness and intemperate, robotic statements. One by one, they’ve awakened to find a man they no longer recognize.
He’s turned over his campaign to the same unprincipled smear artists who slimed him so that they could slime his opponent. And to help in that effort, he’s asking his unqualified running mate, a self-described "pit bull with lipstick" to do the dirty work.
His campaign, now stripped of all integrity, and in complete denial about his responsibility for supporting the last eight years of failed policies, has become little more than pumped up self praise, relentless narcissism over a sense of honor he no longer displays, while smearing Obama’s character and lying about his energy and tax proposals. His strategy has been reduced to a Nixonian cultural war coupled with Rovean partisanship designed to divide the nation he claims to love, all as he cynically promises to end the "rancor" in Washington.
He uses his years as a POW — 30 years ago — as an excuse for every failing today. As bmaz noted, "I challenge you to show me any American veteran, ever in history, that has so shamelessly milked and exploited his military heroism."
Shameless is the right word.

Excuse my language but I do not fucking believe they are playing Sarah Palin’s nickname song Barracuda by Heart. WTF?
This team is so energizing Dems again. I’m fighting mad. I read on DKos that Hillary is coming out on Monday. Whoohah!
Gotta run, am donating again to Obama and to IL-13 Scott Harper up against Repub. Judy Biggert.
First time Ive been able to get online today to FDL. You must have a lot of visitors.
Spot-on, Scarecrow.
And I LOVE you for using the correct grammar [Whom does he think he’s kidding?]
Is it over yet? The Republican reign of terror?
Shameless is too nice a word.
Well, McCrazy is now the front-runner.
Tweety has decreed it, thus it is so.
I have to admit that I tried to avoid most of McCain’s speech. Finally I turned on the TV. The very first thing I heard was John McCain saying, “A culture of life.” Confirming that he has sold his integrity and soul to the fundies.
Now on PBS they are raving about McCain’s speech. Great stage craft, short on specifics, Obama is in for the fight of his life, yadda, yadda, yadda.
OK the ONLY person in the crowd, please take note, clapping on the TWO beat is that black guy. All whities clap on the One and the three beat. Sad idn’t it?
TDS is brilliant tonight.
How about “motherfucker?”
i gotta call it a night fore i start to cry for these folks. this is another of those ‘methinks thou dost protest too much’ moments, all the hoopla over nuttin.
all hat and no cattle.
love ya’ll
EPIC FAIL balloon drop.
A fitting end: too much POW, too much 911, too much GOP, too many balloons.
Caw! Caw!
Did you expect honesty?
The whole night was BAD
Kelly O’Donnell reported that McCrazy *really* doesn’t like to talk about his POWiness. christ. But the party higher-ups have ordered him to ramp up the POW references, ya see.
omfg. He has so got nothing, but we’re gonna be forced to listen to it for two more months anyway.
I avoided all of it and the rest of the RNC as well. I cannot afford a new TV right now.
Mark Shields,,,,This was NOT a great speech. Read it, sounds like a resurgent challenger, failed Admin., do nothing, throw the bums out speech. Mark thinks it is awful…throw the rascals out.
I can’t believe it. Mark Shields is the only one who says that this was a speech that didn’t work.
I guess he felt that cheatin’ on his wife was because he fell in love with “America”…and that telling investigators to back off from Charles Keating (Cindy Lou’s business partner) was decent and good. After all, screw those little people who lost their life savings in the S&L debacle!
judas forking priest i am so glad this clusterfork of a convention is over
We are getting closer. How’s your semester going?
Fuck the republican media. Did anyone expect them to say the speech blew?
I would say that instead of using the word “heroism”, the word “service” should be substituted. True heros rarely if ever use their deeds for self-promotion so shamelessly.
This whole campaign is such a circus, as is our country. I laugh but I am so sickened because I know there is half a country outside of these freaks at the convention who are 100 percent behind this lunacy. Parallel universe is the best description I’ve seen to describe the whole 8 year nightmare which may well extend beyond. This is so unbelievable. You know, it is their goal to make us all numb, so that we no longer get shocked or even react to the lies and the weirdness, and they have half succeeded in doing that. And Obama goes on Fox tonight? What’s up with that, after his pandering to the rightwing church crowd in that horrendous thing they did a few weeks ago.
When the going gets too weird, the weird get going…or something like that!
Straightshooting McCain is running against the last 8 years of Democratic misrule.
His speech made me sick!!! To base his readiness on the fact that he was a POW 36 years ago is just freaking stupid. What does he think the American people want more of the same old tired policies that reward the rich and leave nothing for the middle class??
Tired OLD OLD man…
Tom Ridge calls his candidate George McCain!
It’s all OK if you love your country (as long as you are a Republican and a POW). Kind of like a magic get out of jail free.
And the same music on a short repeating loop, just like their failed policies. They have so little. This is the only kind of recycling they believe in.
McCain came out of Vietnam realizing that a man can not stand alone so he married an heiress with a $100 million fortune. Problem solved.
Already PBS is raving about McCains speech. Richard Norton Smith the Republican historian implied McCain is going all the way to the White House. Of course Jim Lehrer seemed pleased that his man has energized the storm troopers. Lehrer is breathing a sigh of relief that his postition of wealth, priviledge and power have been given a reprieve. It’s hard to believe that Americans will fall for this shit but as Robert Kennedy Jr. said, “Americans are the most entertained people in the world and the least informed.”
Did anyone expect them to say the speech blew?
No. This is another edition…. /s
For pity’s sake, *they* can’t even tell McCain apart from Bush.
Dood, where in the Hell is the DIGG button?
Great post!
Here, have a new razor, yer’s must be dull after that blood letting.
McCain was a POW??? Well that changes everything.
“Get out of jail free card”. Grrr.
WAR! What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing!*
*except to get me into the White House
The Bush Administration is the worst Democratic administration ever!
Just got home from long slog of a day @ the office & opened an email from my daughter- she & hubby made 100 buck donation to Obama/Biden after St. John finished up. Postscript reads, “btw Mom, that FDL writer you think does such a good job has a post up about McSame’s dreck-filled speech.”
Great analysis, Scarecrow, from Marie. Also from Natalie & Scott.
Really just started. Missed a class for Labor Day, so I haven’t gotten into much yet.
O Canada!
Ghouliani – noun, verb, 9/11
McCain — noun, verb, POW
Palin — noun, verb, cleavage
I think McCain is a poor speaker at least partly because he doesn’t practice. Often he did not seem to know what was coming next.
John McCain came out of Viet Nam thinking the world owed him a free ride.
bmaz’ quote had “heroism” in quotes.
judas forking priest i am so glad this clusterfork of a convention is over
concise, clear and correct.
Shit, even the weather around here has gone to hell since this monstrosity started. I blame Fred Thompson.
Left Coasters – don’t miss TDS! and – hiya Suz!
So, correct me if I’m wrong, but this crew just absolutely, unequivocally does not get the idea that increasing carbon in the atmosphere is a really, really bad idea?
digg and newsbox have been disabled as they search for the ghost in the code
they will be back – hopefully soon
Nice concise summary of McCain and his campaign. A man who would do anything to be President should never be allowed to be President.
Gotcha.
we use that word “clusterf*ck” a lot around here but I have to say that it has never rung truer than the last 2 nights in St. Paul MN. It really and truly describes it.
And if you miss the Daily Show tonight or any of it’s reruns tomorrow, you will truly have missed a masterpiece of actual reporting.
And there will also be new shows tomorrow to wrap up the week.
Lucky dog! We are already in the second week. So far the classes are going well. Looks like I have a really good group in my theory seminar.
Priceless!
Careful, then. McCain has a history of crashing his free rides.
Gergen likes the war story…I will be a warrior for you. Man without rancor against Obama; but substantive stuff did not work well. Country wants fresh answers. Thin. Good David. Heart was in his story.
Check this out:
Cheney still in Europe fanning the flames?
That is exactly the tactics that the Nazi’s used to keep people off balance and numb. They learned from their ideological heirs.
When do ya leave Kirk???
Did McCain really say Palin was a . . . hockey-Momin’ . . . ?
I think you could have just stopped after “this crew just absolutely, unequivocally does not get the idea”.
No, they think they will get raptured before any of the serious shit comes down. So par-tee like it was the end of days, because with this crew it well could be.
What has been most surprising to me, is that the McCain campaign has succeeded in accomplishing what no Dem would have ever dared TRY to do.
They have turned McCain’s POW experience into a joke. A caricature. No matter the circumstance, no matter the gaff, they proudly trot their one and only “McCain the Victim” card.
Did I mention he was a POW?
Try to avoid aircraft carriers for a while. 8-)
thanks – am so lookin forward to what jon and crew do with this mess. (wicked evil laugh)
Well, at least one Fox-owned channel has worthwhile programming on right now. “Young Frankenstein”… as opposed to the elder Frankenstein that they are fetêing on every other Fox channel.
Woof!
So he wasn’t “tortured” in Vietnam, contrary to earlier reports. Just “roughed up.” And yet he said they broke him.
As Ehrenstein said over at Digby’s: “The Republicans are running HER for President and McCain for Veep.”
Ayup.
Neal Cohen on NPR brought up the point that McCain is against the system he voted with 90% of the time.
So much fer looking into his eyes and seeing his soul, Dorkmeyer.
Colbert is drowning The Republican National Convention in a bathtub.
our pushback framing is getting picked up … nice :)
Colbert is good, too. Best line on Lieberman after Lie says “What’s a Democrat like me doing here?” Colbert says “wait! wait! I know this one! Spitting in the face of everyone who voted for you!?!”
that one’s for Jane!
I thought PBS was really bad in their response to McSames speech but Charlie Rose, Al Hunt and Byron York might as well be on McCain’s payroll. They were absolutely gushing about McCain. With most of the electorate getting what information they get from the corporate media it’s not surprising that the race is so close.
Hell, neither one of them even has a soul.
Obama campaign release a long list of fact-check lies in the speech.
From Hillary Clinton:
Ooooh, Colbert is rawkin’!
Toobin hated the speech, shockingly bad. Boring, no policy proposals. etc etc.
Was about to queue up TiVo of John McTeleprompter, but on 2nd thought, forget it.
I’d rather backread here @ FDL & sip a Sapphire & tonic.
TTFN.
No doubt. But I have to admit I live in a bit of a bubble. I really only see these people on MSNBC and I kinda confuse them with the all prisoner, all night programming, like production makes them not quite human.
They really, really are that stupid, aren’t they. I guess I always just thought it was a stupidity of choice in order to rationalize the necessary screwing over of the fellow man and still showing up in church bit. As a collection of folks, they are really kind of impressive in terms of collective social disease.
thanks – setting to record now….
It is the pure and complete contempt that they have for voters. After their last 8 years in power they realize that they need to do things differently so they want another 4 years to do more of the same.
Colbert is rocking too! They are the only ones in the habit of committing journalism.
There may be no DIGG Button but you can Digg this POST right Here DIGG IT!
It was the long way but it seems to work (:>))
Just like when they used Springsteen’s
I don’t think they get it.
Barracuda
“You lying so low in the weeds
I bet you gonna ambush me
You’d have me down down down down on my knees
Now wouldn’t you, barracuda?
…
If the real thing don’t do the trick
No, you better make up something quick
You gonna burn burn burn burn it to the wick
Ooooooohhhh, barra barracuda.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh. “
As John Stuart Mill put it, “Not all conservatives are stupid, but stupid people tend to be conservative.” Personally I think Mill was far too generous.
What was that bit near the end about being ‘anointed’? That was like, instant commercial. “John McCain: he might be the Miracle of Lourdes”
or “John McCain: You may touch my raiment, cripple.”
shocked. I’m shocked I tell you. /s
OMG, the blogger who helped pick Sarah Palin actually admitted he blogged from Mom’s house to pimp Palin.
-Spew-
I actually learned something tonight (let that be an inspiration to your young minds, DrDick and EvilDrPuma)
I learned (which I had not realized before) that Tom Ridge has no neck
Gergen must’ve been listening to a different speech…surely he’s not too shallow to recognize subtext?
But it’s the closest they’ve come this whole convention to saying George’s name!
I’m beginning to think that Republican should be a DSM classification. Maybe Kirk can come up with the criteria for it.
The Republican electorate bought the Bush spiel in 2000 and now they’re perfectly willing to overlook 8 years of disaster and buy into the McCain baloney. They buy into the patriotism and red, white & blue and don’t think about the past and don’t look into the story. As Reagan said, why ruin a story with the truth.
McCain talked about his military experience, but wouldn’t admit the past 8 years have been a disaster. He talked about how he KNEW how to govern, but wouldn’t tell anyone enough detail to know he was full of baloney. He talked about the big issues of the day and said “trust me” when the Republicans have had nearly 30 years to do something and their oil men always said “No”. John McCain knows this is a year a Democrat should lead the way and he still hopes to con people into supporting him. That’s not patriotism, that’s snakeoil salesmanship.
He claims to Talk Straight. He ought to get up there and say what Republicans REALLY stand for: guns, anti-gays, anti-taxes, but lots and lots of deficit spending, no government except for the military, creationism in schools, no taxes on the Rich whatsoever so the poor can pay for all government, no abortion under any circumstances, no immigration and separate and unequal schooling to keep uppity Obamas from ever challenging him for political office.
But, they won’t because they’re not really patriotic Straight Talkers.
BTW, I wonder if the Evangelicals wonder why he said he was his nation’s man rather than in the hands of Jesus.
The Reagan Revolution should be over. The American people should realize we need government to do some things and give it full support to do those things well. McCain hedges and speaks vaguely on that. He talks about key issues, but doesn’t really give full support to government involvement. They really don’t like government and only give it lip service.
People really need to repudiate the Reagan Revolution which says ‘government is the enemy’. If we can’t do that, then there truly may be no hope for America. Either we have a government we want or we toss it. Which is it? Keep in mind that without a government we have no laws and the Rich will suddenly have nothing and business owners would have nobody to protect their stores. Yea, nobody likes taxes, but try living without ‘em. Think you can pass all the debt to the next generation or two? What’s the matter? You chicken? Passing debt to somebody else is just stealing their money. Are Americans all thieves?
Bill Clinton showed we could balance the budget. What can Republicans show?
—-
I’m also still thinking about Sarah Palin and a contract she made (as governor of Alaska) with TransCanada corp. $500 million to *someday* build a gas pipeline? Would Alaska really just give that much money to somebody for construction the U.S. government might never permit? It’s worth investigating.
Actually, I think I exploded some heads to day in my intro class when I explained to them that human beings do not have biological races.
dood, you forking rock.. dugg
typo in main post btw. “ever” should be “every” third paragraph.
Maybe they’ll cancel the Winter Olympics in Sochi? Give our athletes several years to be pissed off at the GOP?
Has something to do with the ability to hold a dozen or more mutually contradictory false idea and an inability to connect with reality.
God man nahant, I’m on it.
Breaking: Governor Palin assigned Secret Service code name-
“Ni”
That is Republican Derangement Syndrome you are describing.
thanks revdeb
McCain has no honor. He says Tucker Eskew is responsible for the smear used in the 2000 South Carolina that McCain fathered an out of wedlock child with an African American. Now he has hired Eskew to work with Palin. No real man would do that.
What does he have to offer us?
Races no, but they do have some interesting gymnastics competitions.
Quite frankly if a man had been responsible for saying things like that about my child, I would be in jail after meeting him.
revdeb, the typo has been magically fixed upon your next refresh
thanks
We have a different perspective. Some at the convention were tearing up. I, otoh, was gagging.
shameless hypocrisy and narcissism and nobody bought it.
CNN’s quickpoll on the speech:
Thumbs up 38%
Thumbs down 45%
Didn’t watch 17%
With Palin, the numbers were pretty much reversed. I’m going for no-bounce.
Whoo HOo! Ad for Rachel’s new show!
LOL !!
Johnny Sez:
I was never the same again. I wasn’t my own man anymore. I was my country’s.”
So in other words, he is his country’s bitch? And since he is a Republican, he might also be considered the Republican Party’s bitch.
I think I’m beginning to understand this whole politics thing.
On a somewhat related note, was it the grape or cherry Kool Aid that everyone was drinking in the convention hall this evening?
A noun, a verb, cleavage (ht Prairie Sunshine), and an army of self-empowered Mommas boys, she’s got it all!
We actually talked about that, too, as one of the reasons there are no biological races (too much fucking out of bounds going on for far too long).
As in the Knights who say Ni?
Whoo HOo! Ad for Rachel’s new show!
Any clues there as to what it’s going to be like?
I am not privy to that information. :-)
Is that a new euphemism for wanking in mama’s basement?
Someone make sure that government career service employees realize that McCain was talking about them when he was speaking ill of “bureaucrats.” I believe that some of them vote.
Some here.
I take it the camera people had the 5% of the minorities in the crowd in heavy rotation.
Gotta love face time affirmative action the GOP gives during conventions.
-G
The media want McCain to win so no matter how troglodyte and retrograde this Republican convention has been they are committed to portraying it as the Second Coming.
The Secret Service would be the Knights…as they are saying “Ni” :-)
“Ni…Ni..Ni..Ni…..Ni” Maybe McCain will be “Shrubbery”!
According to a report I saw earlier today, the lowest diversity of any major political convention in 40 years.
They don’t call you the doctor fur nuttin’ ;-)
ummmso, to recap, when he was younger, he did NOT love his country, correct?
Scarecrow, your writing here is a gem. if i tried to express this, it would just come out ’sputter. . .phu. . .splutter.’ thanks for articulating this so finely.
That would depend on whether or not she missed a step coming off the platform.
They most definitely got a bounce out of her speech, now I am waiting for Biden to chew up and spit out a Pit bull with lipstick.
She ain’t got a fucking chance.
we’ve had our fill of shrubbery for the past 8 years!
Out-fucking, I offer this to you as a new anthropological and biological term.
Sarah Palin is the PTA Jeannie C. Riley’s mama socked it to.
Could Mark be getting his mojo back? Please! Ever since Brooks waltzed in, he’s been off his game.
After being super-bummed out by Rudy and Sarah, I couldn’t bear to see or hear McCain tonight. Now have radio on listening to gushing post-conventioneers on npr.
McCain started his speech at 9:11? Rachel mentioned that and I didn’t get it immediately. Shameless.
So Obama lost his bump, but garnered $8 million donations who panicked as much as me after hearing the hockey pitbull.
I am trying to do my part to help with that. Talking with one of our graduate students who is from Big Timber, MT (where Brokaw has his ranch).
~~Mod Note: Gentle reminder, please don’t engage in hinting at violence to anyone.~~
That’s exactly how I feel. I’m grateful for the writers here, all of them.
I’ve been watching cspan and flipping around so maybe I missed something. Have there been as many dems commenting on this convention as there were repubs last week? I haven’t seen any since McCaskill the first night.
Are you kidding? The corporate media is playing this up as the greatest speech McCain has ever given, he has a compelling story, he’s a real warrior yadda yadda yadda. Until the media changes in the U.S. the country will be cursed with pavlovian yahoos that respond to chants of U.S.A, U.S.A., U.S.A.
thanks. From the article:
“I have never watched more than three consecutive minutes of Fox News ever, ever. I’ve never even seen a single segment of a single Fox News program.”
I love her. *s*, and a big *g* for CTut….
I think that the McCain campaign was just as much concerned about getting right-wing talk radio and TV back in their camp as it was with the evangelicals when they selected Palin. And all those guys are slobbering over her about how “Hot” she is…just begging for an interview with her. They are appealing to the redneck males that buy MILF magazines. They hope she will become the first VPILF in history.
McCain: If you want to see an end to the partisanship that was on display tonight and all of this week at my convention, vote for me.
-G
Of course when he does that the GOP spinmeisters and their lackeys in the MSM will whine about how he is beating up on a poor defenseless little girl.
For those of you confused about who’s running for President, this should clear it up. From Tom Ridge.
Works for DrDick’s theorem of human interaction: whenever two groups come into contact for any length of time, sex happens.
Amen, sister.
Whoa, Tweety on a rampage!
At a minimum, ingredients include:
Delusional Disorder
Narcisistic Personality Disorder
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Still looking for other DSM-IV ingredients….
Some on Larry King.
None on a par with McShame…! Most avoid talking about their experiences… Evening, Ya’ll!
He never had any mojo. He is just another really lame Villager who has been drinking the Koolaid way too long. The man has said repeatedly that he likes and respects John McCain. Clear evidence for a lack of judgment and standards.
Got an invite tonight to the opening of a second Obama campaign office in Fargo…they’ve outgrown the first with volunteers. North Dakota’s lookin’ bluer.
Right now on MSNBC, tweety and buchanan are making a strong case for a schizophrenia
Chris Matthews has just discovered that John McCain is running away from George Bush. McCain just “divorced” himself from 8 years of Bush.
Buchanan says this is a battle between two couples, the Obamas vs the McCains.
Keith adds it’s now between Palin and Obama.
Holy crap! That’s so perfect…. every time she speaks, that song should be played… Apologies to Tom T Hall…
Sorry, Tom. Had to be done.
John Bush! I love it.
Still looking for other DSM-IV ingredients….
does being on God’s speed-dial qualify as anything other than a cool name-dropping opportunity?
Scarecrow, THIS IS BRILLIANT WRITING AND CATHARTIC AND COMFORTING TO READ!!! TY!!!
Especially:
Listening to Sarah Palin last night with the gleaming smile, and the flashing dark eyes, I thought of one of those commercials that has meadows and sunlight and sparkling water and relaxed and happy people about for some medical product as you read and hear the list of TOXIC SIDE EFFECTS listed in total counterpoint, horrifying counterpoint, to the sweet scene of comfort and nature being projected. Palin’s relaxed and “trust me” and “I am a heroine” confidence was belied by her toxic words. Their spin makes one’s head spin.
Welcome to the Monkey House!
Statement from Obama campaign:
and so ends Hate week.
I think the McMaverick brand crumbles with a steady recitation of reality. Cant fool 51% of the people all the time. (can you?)
Just sent $50 to the Big O.
N.Y. Times:
“McCain Vows to End ‘Partisan Rancor,’ Seizing Theme of Change From Rival”
By ADAM TOADY and TOADY COOPER
I tell you what, if it’s between “A” Obama and that pit bull with lipstick, then I’m putting my money on Michelle, every damn time!
Just sent $50 to the Big O.
I’m highly in favor of the Big O. Multiple O’s, in fact.
Has EdwardTeller been around?
Actually much more of a Bonobo House. 8-)
I Heart John McCain … oh wait, I’m sober again … Never mind ! *g*
Prairie is just one visitor away from 5000 at her homeblog…just sayin’….
Early night for me. Take care and enjoy.
Well didn’t he suggest ending Unemployment insurance…and compelling the unemployed to enrol in community colleges for retraining?
oh we can take care of that: POW, my friends, POW
A McCain fan spells it out.
G’nite Sir !
I’m wondering what blockbuster announcement/appearance/policy pronouncement TeamObama will bring tomorrow to blow McCheese/Ni out of the water…
Damn. I gotta start hanging in groups.
Is that how double dating got popular?
(I still don’t get speed dating: who wants to hang out with meth heads?)
I’m off to bed. Travelling tomorrow and I haen’t even packed yet.
G’night and sweet dreams!
hopefully a choice indictment or two
Aloha, Petro! How’s everything up north? I hear another election is on tap, any chance that Harper will be ousted…?
Bwahaha …

Just a point some might find interesting. Some of the actual LYRICS in “Barricuda” and surprising that they didn’t vet these either:
I hate to see great irony unnoticed, Just saying….
Aloha, Dr. D and solai!
It is amazing how all the old tropes can be used over and over again because the media is like the guy in Memento who can’t remember what happened 5 minutes ago. We were writing back before the 2006 election that the Republican idea of bipartisanship was for Democrats to agree with what Republicans wanted. 2 years later they dish it out again and the media swallows it whole, again.
He was here a bit last night, I believe. Maybe the tube foul-ups has been keeping him off. I’d think his take on Palin and Wasilla would be useful. Also whether Alaska can be compared economically and structurally to any State in the lower 48 at all. I tend to think that the Alaska Permanent Fund makes it more of a “socialist State” vs. any other in the Union.
The Obama campaign’s large fact check file on McCain’s speech has been downloaded to this site:
Yeah, but refusing the collect charges is a tough Job.
United Socialist Separatist State of Republicans?
Hiya Buddy, how’s life in Paradise ?
Harpuh knows that if he waits until November, Obama- mania will catch on north of the 49th, so he’s trying to pull a snap election for October …
I hope the Liberals form a minority Gov’t but I think Harpuh will get another minority Gov’t for another two years … Dion & the Liberals are spineless …
It’s a picture of a delegate holding up a MAVRICK sign.

Boing, blase speech from McCain tonight.
In other news, 17 people died as a result of the mass of crap that fell from the ceiling after McCain ended his speech.

I thought that fashioning John McCain’s Tie from the hem of Cindy’s Million dollar dress was a nice touch …
thank goodness the rnc inquisition is over
not even Cardinal Fang?
…and Bristol Palin has been given the SS name of “Whee!”
This week has been a perfect illustration of how much of a disadvantage it is to run as a Democrat. Could Obama and Biden be anymore gracious and respectful? Probably too much so for many here, but it simply doesn’t matter what they do since Conglomerate Media will brand them exactly as the Repubs say. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t. Seems like Obama gets this and has put most of his resources into groundgame, so we’ll see if that’ll be enough to overcome the massive disadvantage he has in influencing public discourse.
I mean, the Repub VP nominee’s 17 year old daughter announces she’s pregnant and unmarried, and within a day this is now spun, and accepted as fact for their base and most of BigMedia, that this is a actually a positive for Repubs since she “chose life”, or simply ignored altogether. Just imagine for a second if this was Chelsea Clinton or one of Obama’s daughters when they’re 17. Jeezus…almost get sick to my stomach thinking about what they’d be saying…
Seems the only way to change this dynamic is to grow our ranks here in the New Media by 10 or 20 times, so we’d better get cracking and getting our friends and relatives reading FDL and your other favorites.
Hola, Suz!
Heh, time-challenged, sounds like an affliction…! It does have it’s ups and downs for sure…! ;-)
hey newton
The chants voiced at the Republican National Convention all were remarkable; remarks may vary.
The delegates passed up some chanting opportunities.
FORK… i swear there was a zone following time and before challenged… dayam enn ess aya are forking with me again
My favorite part was where he promised to trap students in community colleges where they can learn blue-color skills and never go on to four-year colleges where they can learn to think for themselves and become critics of people like John McCain.
Howard Fineman is reporting the McCain campaign is sending Palin BACK TO ALASKA for a week. Out of sight out of mind so they can coach and train her on his policy positions. No puplic interviews will be given by her over this time. How weird!
Chants Convention-attending Republicans Could Have Tried
I’ll start with one:
The important thing to remember about McCain’s speech is that he was just saying stuff. It didn’t have to be true or make sense. It didn’t have to be consistent with what he has done or said before. It didn’t need any connection with the real world. It is the victory of form over substance. The modern day version of a chicken in every pot. You won’t get any of it but that won’t stop McCain from promising it to you.
Monk in da house!!
We have missed you so much!
“I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else’s. I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency; for its faith in the wisdom, justice and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again. I wasn’t my own man anymore. I was my country’s.”
HE’S A BORN AGAIN …
AMERICAN ! ! !
He was upright, his lips moved, they were thrilled.
It doesn’t matter what he said, in Bizarro World you only hear what you wanted to hear .
Spot on, as always Hugh !
What a MORAN!!!
http://www.eskimokaka.be/images/morans.jpg
And we ain’t talkin bout Terry.
I took it to mean outside the light cone of absolute future and past.
He was last night. His family is living in Wasilia. (or however you spell Palin’s home town)!
Either teh toobz are wobbly or I am … and after half a bottle of Chianti, I guess it’s me … *g* … G’nite all !
((((( Loo Hoo )))))
Maybe this suggests a different origin to the “Sarah Barracuda” nickname. That Heart song came out in 1977…just about when Sarah was entering High School. I wonder if she was a “barracuda” in the way that Heart suggested.
BTW I wonder if the Wilson sisters authorized this? They just played on the Ellen DeGeneres show and I don’t think that Palin meshes with their politics AT ALL!
,i>Howard Fineman is reporting the McCain campaign is sending Palin BACK TO ALASKA for a week. Out of sight out of mind so they can coach and train her on his policy positions. No puplic interviews will be given by her over this time.
How weirdWhat a surpise!Hey, it’s not like any of the commie rubes in the librulmedia will ever find her *there*….
I wonder if she’ll use the Secret Service guys, or just hire some bouncers, to keep reporters away?
Maybe a little opportunity for the future son-in-law to earn some ass-kicking cash?
Petrocelli!!! So nice to see you!
Nite Petro!
And, of course,
Hopefully that strategy will work as well as it did for Ned Lamont.
g’nite dr dick
QUIET PICKERING! NOW LISTEN CLOSELY, ELIZA:
“The rain in Spain lies mainly on the PALIN.”
“Again.”
I swear there was an ‘Applause’ sign that was above him that they turned on when they sought the desired effect… Wasn’t the balloons and confetti supposed to be released a lot sooner than it was…? ‘Course there was no climatic moment available…!
She hasn’t given a public interview or press conference yet, either, so she gets another week to prepare to make anything other than a speech off a tele-prompter, eh? I wonder why, well not really!
Apparently the National Enquirer is now in town. Let’s hope they get some pictures again…
The oil vote was part of the tax incentives in the 2005?? Energy Act, a lousy bill with a few good alternative energy things, along with tax breaks for oil companies. Most Dems voted for it, but it was a mixed bag at best.
That’s insane…unless you think an excess profits tax is “welfare”?
Is McCain goin to suggest that oil and gas companies pay 80% of the Federal budget like the Alaskan Constitution mandates?
damn – I miss “edit”.
Yes. Team Obama ain’t going to just let this ride. What I love, though, is that it will not be on personality issues. It will be on policy.
oh dear… watertiger figured out why sarah is being hidden away
Actually, that provides a good opportunity for the Democrats to define her before the McCain campaign is finished defining her
If Palin is not ready to campaign on day one, how the hell is she going to be ready to be vice-president? It seems like shielding her from the public and the press for a week, they will lose the momentum and some of the new energy she has brought to the campaign. I can’t believe they are that paranoid she is going to be caught saying something that would hurt the campaign.
IIRC the McStain campaign already has a line-up of copyright infringement suits pending for playing music made by folks that don’t like McStain or Sarah Shooter without permission or payment.
Telling lies is not a good thing.
RonD told me to tell everyone ‘Hi’ from over at Spook and Muffin’s…
I hear you and, personally, I’m yelling at the tube and swearing like a longshoreman; but, you know what? I’m ok that the leaders of my chosen party have a little bit of class.
You make the point that the proposed second family of the opposition is shown to be pretty much a bunch of redneck hicks, pregnant teenage daughter and all. And, yeah, that’s an unfair characterization to a certain extent but it really is playing well with the Nascar crowd–not that there’s anything wrong with that–but you’d never make the mistake of calling Sarah Palin classy.
Even Cindy McCain, with a 300,000 dollar wrapper…she might be nice as pie, but I wouldn’t call her classy.
So, it’s ok if there’s a part of America that identifies with rednecks. You know what, good for them. Ignorance is bliss.
But, still, I’m ok that my guys have some class. It’s a good thing and THIS TIME, I think even some of the more intelligent conservatives will recognize that an “elite” intellect is a better choice for the country than someone you’d like to have a beer or gut a moose with.
Besides, I think a nice Pouilly Fusse in the afternoon with the Obamas would just be marvelous!
As long as they don’t call Brazile or Shrum or their ilk for help, I can sleep.
Can that winning McCain smile be reptilecated? I don’t think so.
Here’s Media Matters take on the Obama Vote on the 2005 Energy Bill
Brazile got pepper-sprayed by Republican Blackwater Goons, but she liked it. She hasn’t said she didn’t like it.
I love what Mario Cumno said, (I’m paraphrasing here) about McCain is asking the people to give our lives for the war but he doesn’t ask the wealthy to help out with the economy of our country.
Classic non-non-denial.
She is perfect Harry Reid campaign manager material. Please, please Harry – hire her now!
But, still, I’m ok that my guys have some class. It’s a good thing and THIS TIME, I think even some of the more intelligent conservatives will recognize that an “elite” intellect is a better choice for the country than someone you’d like to have a beer or gut a moose with.
John McCain sez: If you wanna get some ass, you gotta show a little class. Then he grins with them yeller choppers.
Either that or have someone call bullshit, which America knows it is.
maybe they are not paranoid. maybe they KNOW that there are things she could say that would hurt the campaign.
Palin – good with a buck knife, better with a hatpin.
Of course not. Money’s precious, after all. /snark
I would NOT want to have a beer with John McCain. I am afraid he would get all sentimental and start calling me “My Friend”….
If Palin is not ready to campaign on day one, how the hell is she going to be ready to be vice-president?
Her job is not to be Vice-President. Her job is to campaign. And as you rightly point out, she’s not ready for that yet. Hell, they may not allow her back out into public until October 2, the date of the Veep Debate.
they will lose the momentum and some of the new energy she has brought to the campaign.
Nah, this is where McMania will take over, holding the country spellbound in rapt wonderment at his mavericity and ability to keep coming up with fascinating new shades of green screens to stand in front of while he simultaneously changes policy positions on alternating days.
Nobody will ever notice she’s gone. /s
John McCain has the brain of a Komodo Dragon.
I’m hoping this jag is an outlet, so why stop now.
My Friend, have another rib and I’ll tell you again how they roughed me up until I broke…
Oh I ‘m certain there is plenty they will school her on what not to say or go too much in depth explaining. I’m trying to keep my comment length short to keep up with you all fast typers! I’m looking forward to her first huge gaff and am disappointed I have to hate over a week for it.
More than 600 people have been arrested during the convention. Rights have been violated. Journalists have been detained and treated with total contempt. And the MSM won’t cover any of it in any depth.
Reprehensible. If they had been around at the Boston Massacre, it would have gone unreported.
I would NOT want to have a beer with John McCain. I am afraid he would get all sentimental and start calling me “My Friend”….
Glass. Beer. Bottles.
heh.
would somebody please tell Tweety to stop saying McSame was a fighter pilot
What was the building on the screen behind McCain?
Obama will be on Olbermann Monday night !
I guess McStain’s mother looks younger than him because she didn’t get to be a POW (That means Prisoner of War, in case anybody didn’t know) or you can just use the synonym HERO. It’s the new apprenticeship/training program for presidunces.
Obama Monday on Countdown….
g’night, pups.
The sun’ll come out tomorrow….
His face resembles that of a Komodo Dragon.
My friends, My friends, My friends
Maverick, Maverick, Maverick
Allow me to turn the microphone over to Andrew Sullivan:
What was the building on the screen behind McCain?
Exxon-Mobil headquarters?
What to make up for his appearance on O’Really today…? 8-(
My guess is it was the Naval Academy?
KO needs to invite McCheese on, and make it very public. Right now.
McCheese will never appear on his show, and Ni would rather choke.
Hi everyone! How did McCain’s peep’s get permission to use the Earth,Wind and Fire song? They are vocal supporters of Obama and were in Denver last week. Did they “borrow” something again? ugh.
There you go. It’s hard to stop, though.
Well really they tortured him, but since the Bu$h legal team re-defined the word “torture” McStain can only claim to have been “roughed up.”
Time is not her friend, worry not.
Case in point. Kelly LeBrock then: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hz8ul-gmLyA
Kelly LeBrock now:
http://www.google.com/imgres?i…..&cd=1
Nobody, not even Republicans, want to look at McCrazytrain’s face for four years. Denzel Washington or The Cryptkeeper?
g’nite ps
I conclude Palin was selected for window dressing and that is pretty much it. I disagree that nobody will notice she is gone. You can be certain every major paper and TV and cable news show has requested an exclusive interview with her.
late late nite upstairs
See, you Liberals are soooo pretentious. Pouilly Fusse? Everyone knows that Dale Earnhardt only drank Chateauneuf du Pape. ;)
Yes, I prefer the classy approach, which they just are and I don’t think they’re acting with that, but I just don’t have much confidence in our electorate right now. I still feel good about Obama’s chances mostly from his focus on ground game, but having BigMedia acting as his ad agency, McInsane will be able to keep it too close for comfort it seems.
Saw a clip of Biden on the Today Show this AM, and it was so refreshing. NewsReader kept trying to bait Biden into the mud, but Joe came across as such an adult. Gotta think this resonates with a lot of the viewers, especially Today Show viewers.
There you go. It’s hard to stop, though. And it’s hard for me to direct my replies.
Has anyone here heard or read the book, “Myth of a Maverick” by Matt Welch? If so what kind of book is it? Supportive or negative toward McCain?
Joe cleaned up big time in a retirement home appearance in Florida earlier this week. They adored him.
“McInsane will be able to keep it too close for comfort it seems.”
Do you mean, close enough to STEAL (again)?
Maybe HoJo was there booking a room for himself?
McCain: “Government assistance for unemployed workers was designed for the economy of the 1950s. That’s going to change on my watch… My opponent promises to bring back old jobs by wishing away the global economy.”
What bull…. Of course Republican policies sent those jobs abroad…by out-sourcing them.
“We’re going to help workers who’ve lost a job that won’t come back, find a new one that won’t go away.”
So he admits that corporations off-shored those jobs…so what are the jobs that “won’t go away” that he has planned? Lawn Maintainance? Moose hunting?
“We will prepare them for the jobs of today.” How about the jobs of the future?
“We will use our community colleges to help train people for new opportunities in their communities.” Apparently the jobs McCain thinks of doesn’t require higher education than a CC?
” For workers in industries that have been hard hit, we’ll help make up part of the difference in wages between their old job and a temporary, lower paid one while they receive retraining that will help them find secure new employment at a decent wage.”
So if you are a steel worker that received $20 an hour you’ll be expected to forego unemployment insurance and work at Weiner World while also taking mandatory classes at a Community College. Then when a job as a greeter at Walmart emerges (ahem…that pays a “decent wage” i.e. minimum wages that the Republicans consider “livable”) then you’ll be cut off any of that PART OF THE DIFFERENCE that they are paying you while you work.
The McCain future…millions of Middle Class workers forced into minimum wage jobs!
Yeah, that worries me too. If it’s close enough for the Diebold coup, it’ll be a mess again. The only thing I can say to that is that Obama has changed the map and there might not be the right operatives in the right swing states this time. Karl’s magic spreadsheet showed them to get the goons to Ohio and Florida; but if it ends up being all the states West of the Mississippi, that’s a lot of goons, baby!
and lots of Perseveration .
Using the correct grammar in present-day UISA can be dangerous to ones health and peace of mind, opening one to ridicule. All-too many people think that the proper usage is wrong and the user an ignoramus! Sometimes one must write “[sic]” to reinforce that ones usage is indeed correct.
Most often an egregious error. For example (but this failing is nearly ubiquitous among present speakers/writers of English hereabouts), Bush always says things such as “We got to…; They got to understand….” The correct forms are clearly “We have got to…; They have got to….” Bush is hardly alone in this misusage, and even the MSM are now adopting such deplorably ignorant grammar. Alas, use of this vitally important tense is little understood in recent American (USA) usage, judging from current examples of speaking and writing.
Try this mini quiz:
Question 1: Is grandmother alive or dead as of that sentence?
Question 2: Is Grandmother alive or dead as of the time of that sentence?
Answers on application, if needed/desired.
You’re right, Scarecrow. “Shameless” is the right word. Not only is he shameless in exploiting the sort of experience that many veterans don’t talk about at all, but he’s shamelessly given up his principles in the last few years (such as they were) to get one last shot at the Presidency.
It would be sad if we all weren’t along for the ride.
Yes, Obama’s strategy has been brilliant so far on so many fronts, that being one. They’ve also anticipated a lot of the problems, and have had an unprecedented program in place for a while now to get lawyers pro-actively working on vote integrity.
From their press release a couple of months ago:
http://my.barackobama.com/VoterProtection
Like much of what Obama has done so far, they keep this stuff under the radar, which is also very smart. While Repubs will have some success with voter suppression since it all happens so quickly and they’re damn good at it, we’ll be able to stop more than ever before. Gotta stay vigilant.
say that to John Edwards and the Clintons
Yes, the patriarchal daddy leaders and the enthralled good “crony” children. Xenophobic — Fear of otherness. B/W thinking. Fer us or agin us. Critical thinking not encouraged. Warm fuzzy codependency!
I hope someone records that and runs it in every obama ad they can.
ALso, please tell me someone got the video of Mrs. Greenspan being pelted by balloons as she tries to make a report from the convention floor!
Naw, he was Charles Keating’s man.
I think Jim Lehrer is a republican. He is very good friends with Alan Greenspan. Gwen Ifill is very good friends w/Condi Rice. They are Washington insiders, not journalists.I don’t watch The Newshour anymore. The only thing I watch on Public TV is Bill Moyers and Now.
