It is, to be fair, one based on an ideal.
That Americans are stupid, base, resentful and bigoted. That if one can scream and bloviate loudly enough you can keep your Party in power even when it is about as popular as chlamydia. How Mavericky!
Scream how much you love Jesus, and also Israel who you are sure will one day also especially love Jesus — on pain of death. Nice flag pin…got one that doesn’t pander so overtly? Finally, deliver a good speech as your calling card while saying that all Obama can do is deliver a good speech. Do this and you are apparently golden and you’ll manage to get 50 percent plus one vote, or at least have the Supreme Court say "close enough!". After all, John McCain spent five and a half years as a P.O.W. (in case you haven’t heard) — all so he could protect the freedoms that one day would allow him to call half of this Country traitors. Now that’s positive leadership!
So much for the "United" in the United States of America. And if Todd and Sarah Palin had their druthers so much for one State in the United States of America for that matter.
Never mind what you will actually do once in power other than fire those not beholden to you and, oh yes, DRILL, DRILL, DRILL. Never mind policies, it is, after all, from your point of view, all about the personalities and not the issues. And to get there we must stop criticizing your children so you get a full on chance to exploit them? When does little Trig get passed to the loving arms of Tom DeLay anyhow?
No wonder the consistent look on the face of John McCain’s mother was one of badly repressed horror.
Will it work, or better put, will it work again?
To give you some sense of optimism, quite likely not:
In two different focus groups of Clinton-supporting Nevada women — married and unmarried — conducted immediately after Gov. Sarah Palin’s Wednesday night speech to the Republican National Convention, a few common reactions quickly took shape.
First, women in both groups were impressed with Palin’s speaking ability and poise. But they were hardly convinced that she was qualified to be vice president, or that she truly represented the "change" they were looking for, especially in light of what was deemed an overly harsh "sarcasm" pervading her address…
In the "married" group, when one attendee kicked off the discussion by saying "she’s a good speaker, and a crowd pleaser," the rest of the room articulated their agreement. "I didn’t expect to be as impressed as I was," said another respondent. But then another woman added: "Once she started mudslinging, I thought, it’s the same old crap as other politicians. McCain used her to get the women’s vote. And she’s using McCain."
"Thank you," another woman responded. "That really upset me; there was no need for that. It was snippy."
The unmarried group also voiced similar objections to the harsh, partisan edge of Palin’s remarks. "I’m not impressed with her at all as a person," one said, citing her "finger pointing" and general sarcasm after the group had generally agreed that she was a talented public speaker.
It’s just a small focus group of people targeted by campaigns as swing voters. Palin’s got the GOP base who was bound and determined to finally have a reason for jump for joy at something.
But that may be all she has — and for all their complaining, McCain had all of those folks in the bag anyway.
Can Obama get the others? Look at the clip of his shortened speech on Labor Day and tell me who is the better and more genuine speaker?
The answer is pretty damned evident — It is a true Bobby Kennedy moment.
And for that reason, the Republicans can have all the Sarah Palin moments they want, she’ll never top the authenticity of that moment on Monday.

Citizen Attaturk:
Thanx for the post, I am convinced that this is the last battle in our 148 year old civil war…it will be the end of American fascism or the end of America.
Mother McCain is not the only one revolted by these shenanigans. At least she looked revolted in that photo Ataturk has linked to.
Sarah has arranged a shotgun wedding for her daughter Bristol and the boyfriend Levi, and, apparently, McCain has strongarmed his children into some public-relations semblance of affection for the old philandering coot, from whom they have long been reported estranged, and not without good reason for their disaffection.
It nauseates me that so many Americans appear to have fallen for this disgraceful strutting and preeening. Fuck these popinjays!
I love that the McCain-Palin ticket is now a shining example of how effective abstinence-only sex education really is. Go team!
As Jane pointed out below, she delivered snide and nasty with a smile.
Notwithstanding the known and unknown skeletons in her closet, Palin is a “fresh” face on the political scene. There is an unbridled optimism and energy with her…the problem is that 75% of Americans think the country is on the wrong track because of the economy and foreign policy, and not the culture-war issues she will hit on. if the American public think that America’s problem are due to a lack of a positive attitude or because of a decline in culture, then she will have an impact.
It seems the wrong period in time for her and her shallow and largely irrelevant message. I think Americans will have to put aside their feelings regarding the disaster of the last 8 years in order to vote for the McCain ticket and I just do not see that happening.
my two cents
Mornin’, pups -
Slept through it so all I’ve heard so far are the sound bites (which are quite tasty). Guess all it takes these days to be a candidate for the second highest office in the land is being able to read a teleprompter.
No offense to all citizens of the Lake but, if *this* ticket gets elected, the rest of the world can rename this country “The United Stupid of America”.
IIRC (please correct if in error) Maverick refers to the man who, unwilling or unable to brand his own cattle decided that if everyone else would be branding theirs, he would not need to; and didn’t. Others, seeing an unbranded head would most assuredly (and quickly) apply their own brand to it. Not an advised policy on an open range. Maverick, needless to say, went broke by his own doings. But his name is noted in history.
Moral of the story: Mavericks are STUPID.
This night, she is not good to me. Many of the Leftish Bloggers are wringing their hands and rending their garments. The Republican Party of America, AP, and EmmEssEmm (whatev, same diff) are swooning, absolutely swooning. Imagine: an Unknown! From Alaska! And–yes–a woman/lady! She spoke enthusiastically from a teleprompter after at least 4 days of boot-camp rehearsal! Did anybody know any of these things were POSSIBLE??!? Her words! Never slurred! Every syllable…. (taking a breath)… pronounced! And those eyes! And that smile!
Since this campaign began in earnest (let’s say sometime in 2007, although my wife thinks it dates back to 1999) I have sworn–at least twice–that I was never going to drink again. And here I am.
And I plead: Will everyone (and this includes YOU Hilzoy) please sober up? A pretty female politician who loves to be on TeeVee spoke–with unctuous spunk and perkiness–into the camera. The clock is ticking on when she will be interviewed by…anyone, much less anyone credible, much less holding, say, a news conference. Karl Rove thinks he can trot her out as political theatre during the RNC and then hide her in basement during the campaign like Prince Ruprecht?
Let us keep our wits about us, shall we? (I keep asking this of myself; in fact, I have it tattooed on my wrist.) This is not the rebirth of Ronald Reagan. This is Jimmy Swaggart in high heels. This is an Assembly-of-God Mayberry-of-Alaska theocrat who has been profoundly, profoundly reckless about every decision she has made since her assumption of elective office. These rats, yes, will not fuck themselves. BUT, it must be said, they are coming awful goddamned close. Asymptotic rodentia autoerotica.
So… Nice speech, Madame Governor. John McCain gives you some very grateful (and, yeah, helpless, sickening, and pathetic) sugar.
But a well-worn path is being beaten from the “Media Centers” in the lower 48 to your Breakaway-Republic-of-Alaska. The Christianists love you so much they had to change underwear at least twice tonight for reasons both erotic and scatological. BUT America finds you and your dysfunctional brood rather odd. Facts are continuing to dribble out. Your mediocrity is not invisible to people who, say, really give a shit whether they will have health insurance in a few years. Letting yourself become a captive of the insular “reality” of McCain’s handlers and Fox News is not a winning strategy.
A beverage your way. ;-)
Attaturk, thank you. I went into shock after watching RG and SP last night and am in need of your antidotal wit and truth. Thank you.
As Wolf proclaimed, “A Star is Born!” right after SP’s speech, my stomach flipped. Admittedly, she has a down to earth persona that is powerful, attractive and confident. Bile with a smile! Simpler words than Agnew, prettier package, but channelling Spiro’s messages. One more puppet icon for the bottom feeding scum sucking corporate/governmental greedy sociopathic patriarchs.
And all the ugly talking points, that hating drum beat, that has echoed through the years and left the Dems tiptoeing on eggshells in Congress and on the campaign trail too often. Jingoism.
But, I wonder, Attaturk, et al., are most Americans stupid, base, resentful and bigoted, THE VAST VOTING MAJORITY, the giving Bush insanely a second term majority? Low info, anti-intellectual, sound-bitten citizens?
As for MSM … lapdogs finding one more lap?
I noticed the look of repulsion and horror on Mama McCain’s face, too, and wondered… does she have this woman’s number as well as the rest of the lefties watching and dreading? And Brokaw looked genuinely sick at one point, and I was convinced that he was sensing the MSM that hss contributed so much to the care and feeding of McCain and BushCo, was suddenly being vilified for researching what McCain should have done himself, that the left was pointing the way to. The “hissy fit” offense=defense game of righteousness… truthiness under attack by reality …how dare anyone challenge their gated-community mind-set and long-spoiled will?
Also, the “titillation meter” is what the gamesman media goes by. I found myself remembering Hugh Grant showing up on Leno after his shaming… and phoenix time. What a guy! Take your media medicine, smile into the camera, and you are home free. Never let em see you sweat.
MSM … so enthralled to power, so obtuse to truth!
A star is born, indeed. And I proclaimed recently, the Sarah Palin kool-aid wouldn’t sell. I am listening to radio BBC speak of SP’s fiery and inspiring convention speech.
Ayn Rand used to write about the lemmings and those who recognize the truth. How will the see-saw go at the end?
Self-described: “Pitbull With Lipstick.”
As she has effectively described herself as such, I suggest we go with it.
Sarah Palin = Pitbull
Albeit with lipstick.
Do you know how many mothers fear Pitbull’s?
Here he is, Dick, Dick, Prick, over in (undesignated locality) Georgia, giving away the farm to the AEI puppet Saakashvili. Just so you are aware where your VP is. For their attack on Ossetia, Georgia is getting $1.75 BILLION as their reward for poking the Russian bear. Go Figure!

It ought to be illegal.
Oh, that’s right, it is illegal.
So!
Hope you are out of harm’s way. Good luck!
That would be diverting serious credit from the bailout to pay for the arms merchants. Oh, … that’s US
i listened to palin carefully last night. and i’ve just listened to the clip.
and i think palin was the better and more genuine speaker. and the most likeable of the four candidates.
surprising and very scary.
damn.
It really doesn’t matter who wins, nothing will change. Obama and McSame both have the establishment seal of approval. You lose, the State wins.
Ol lady Mc Cain always looks like that,
Servers forkin’ around again?
Bile with a smile.
Turn of phrases don’t come any better! :-)
i disagree. just because, imo, we don’t have any good choices doesn’t mean we have no choice. don’t see how “nothing will change.” for example, obama says he will draw down usa troop levels in iraq and surge in afghanistan. do you think that is exactly what mccain will do?
do you think they will both have exactly the policies wrt reproductive health services (and the gag rule on international aid)? even if you think the differences will be small – wouldn’t you expect that those differences could have a very large affect on some people’s lives?
i see how there will be different approaches in what to do now and come november. but i don’t see them as being the same or having the same coalition of supporters.
Morning all :)
I caught a soundbite of Palins speech and the first thing that came to mind was, ‘Wow, What a BITCH!.
What makes Palin likable to you? I would really like to understand because she just made my teeth hurt…like nails on blackboard. A lot of people say she has charm but it is lost on me, so I would really like to understand what the attraction is.
Morning, excellent writeup Attaturk.
I was taken aback how well received Palin was. Jane’s right, red meat for the masses.
(and the elder Mrs. McCain did wear a look of “badly repressed horror.”)
With McSame the old companies are #1 with obama the health/indurance companies are #1. With McSame you get more war for oil keeping the money flowing to the oil war profiteers. With obama you get lousy health care and the insurance companies get richer. Sorta same difference.
But again, Palin showed with her body language that she’s repulsed by him.
Or as my spouse said,. That is one articulate bimbo.
Ah, finally I can get here. (Been unable to get FDL before now this morning.) Good morning, pups. It’s Collins and Cohen this morning. Ms. Collins gives us “Sarah Palin Speaks!” and says that many people believe that Sarah Palin is a terrible choice for a running mate. But you have to remember who the other options were. Mr. Cohen’s column is titled “How Home Became Homeland,” and suggests that America is more effective when it leads with the “power of our example” than with “the example of our power.” Nicholas Kristof is off today.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve just got time to grab one of those lemon poppyseed muffins before I tear out the door. Have a great day.
But again, Palin showed with her body language that she’s repulsed by McCain.
I could not watch. This morning NPR: “political celebrity fired up the crowds.”
If McC croaks, this little lady would be Pres. Im in shock.
She puts my back up too. She’s rather like the way an elderly friend of mine once described Nancy Reagan — “a winsome shark.”
That scares me big time, and with all the power Bush has claimed for the office . . .
After spending 18 months falling all over themselves praising Obama, is the media’s praise for Palin’s presentation any surprise?
But unlike with Obama, the media’s admiration for Palin’s poise and speaking ability is tempered with skepticism and anger, because she does not pander to the media.
Palin’s biggest problem last night was the audience — her effective critique of Obama was undermined by the ugliness of the reaction to it.
i don’t like her – she scares me. it’s just a superficial, appearance only kind of reaction – if i don’t listen to what she is saying.
I didn’t listen or read the speech. Did she say anything about mass arrests and detentions of liberals, progressives, Democrats, teenage loose women etc.. If not, sounds like the “base” will be ready for that in her next speech. Republicans, the closest thing to fascism in America.
Me, I’m not so certain “McCain had those folks in the bag” at all.
They might not have voted for Obama, but much of the Republican success of late has centered around getting the social conservatives out to vote for iniatives and convincing them that a vote for W was worth pulling the lever while they are there.
McCain has no appeal, and even the densest mouth breather has heard repeatedly that Johnny is not their friend.
They’ll pull the lever and pray for a speedy and painless demise to elevate one of their own.
well, maybe the differences balance out for you. i was just trying to get past the “nothing changes”
in my nightmares, i think mccain will escalate the war in iraq, obama will escalate the war in afghanistan.
mccain is likely to start a war with iran, obama is more likely to start a war with pakistan.
and so on.
those, if true (and i’m not claiming to know, i’m just trying to guess like everyone else here) are real differences. even if we don’t like any of them.
that is all.
I suppose you are what’s referred to as a “deep mole.”
pretty sure she said exactly the same thing as the democrats on this one – nothing.
“little lady”? What’s shocking is how quickly fauxgressives will fall into sexist language because they disagree with a woman.
What Palin demonstrated last night is that she’s not a “little lady”, but an intelligent, uncompromising woman who is ‘up to’ the job of Vice President — and appears to be more ready than Obama to assume the duties of the Oval Office should tragedy strike. Is she “wrong on the issues” — sure. But this demeaning “little lady” crap is an insult to strong, capable women everywhere.
My husband was ready to turn off Rudy, let alone Sarah, saying it was all nasty lying & you don’t hear Dems talking trash like that. What a contrast between conventions.
R’s act like vicious small town gossips who live for spreading reputation shredding rumors to boost their own egos.
what did i do to deserve that?
It’s going to be interesting to see how much time McCain & Palin campaign together between now and the election, she sure doesn’t like being with him.
And she will overshadow him, how’s he gonna react to that?
No, you are right, there are differences but the choices are not good. I guess we have to wait another 4 or 8 years to see if a REAL candidate of change will arise and we will actually get something done (universal health care anyone) for the people and not for the corporations.
Okay. Well, I guess we’ll see if successful teleprompter reading translates into winning hearts and minds…none around here, of course, but then I am a terrible judge of what will “sell” to our citizenry.
“falling for it” is not quite the expression
one of the managers at work is grasping for anything, anything at all to justify not voting for the black man
the bush policies have put us about one year away from going out of business and he knows it, but he will do and say anything but vote for the black man
no matter how much better our candidate is, in this election the republicans have a few votes they can count on, then they have to convince a few others
and then of course flip a few electronically cast votes, keep as many democratic precincts from voting, cage a bunch of others
and let’s remind everyone, the more exposed they are the more brazen they become
previous elections they had to keep it close to look legitimate, they have no such constraints this election
we have done far too little to insure a clean election, and therefore, I blame us if it is not a clean election
if we lose this election for any reason, the coup is complete and irreversible and we will have ourselves and only ourselves to blame
who said irony was dead?
Rove, through his acolytes, is firmly in conrol of this campaign.
Which means we need to be worried about election fraud.
according to Redstate, the teleprompter kept scrolling through the applause lines and so Palin had to wing it – to a smashing success
She styles herself a “Hockey Mom, a pit bull with lipstick.”
Well she can call herself what she wants, but it doesn’t matter if she’s a chihuahua with lipstick or a great dane in a thong, when she’s all bark and no bite, she’s still just a dog.
Out of the mouth of babes…
My four year old received a gift from a well meaning family member of this talking Jesus doll. The doll quotes, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” My little guy thinks that is a cool idea. So he pushes the button on the doll all day long (Much to the painfulness of his parents “talking toy headache”). Nonetheless, “Love thy neighbor” is a value we embrace and if a talking toy Jesus is going to cement the concept and aid us in teaching how to do “that”, let the toy talk.
My little one was sitting on the couch this AM looking at books and every now and then looking over his shoulder to see me reading the news and watching video of Palin and then Obama’s Labor Day speech above. He asked me, “Who is that lady?” I told him in a matter of fact tone, “She wants to be the helper to John McCain, who is running for President. “Is that like the same President Barack Obama is running for with the Mr. Biden helper?” He asked. “Yes,” I answered.
“Mommy, is she an evil witch like in the Wizard of Oz?” He asked. Trying to keep my response neutral, I asked him, “Why did you ask that?” He said, “Didn’t you hear her, she’s mean and scary. She does not ‘Love thy neighbor.’ Now Mr. Barac Obama, did you listen to him say how much he loves his neighbor? He’s a good guy. He’s nice. I like him a lot.”
Kids have a beautiful way of getting to the point.
do you have a link for the repulsing body language? My husband clicked over to The Daily Show the instant she spoke her last word, so I didn’t see any of the denouement.
LOL!
That’s a t-shirt.
No link, just saw it on the stage after her speech, when McCain came out to greet her and her family.
And here is the gist of the whole deal. You can say plate or shrimp, or plate of shrimp…whatever. It will be seized on as THE reason not to vote for the best candidate and the sad truth is this, America is still woefully prejudice at it’s base level. My hope is that base (the McCain base) is about the same number as the current President’s approval rating.
I’m betting it is.
what i’ve been thinking is that Obama may be the best we can get – if we wait on a savior, we will be waiting for as long as the left behind folks are going to be waiting for their rapture.
but, if we can find a way to hold someone like Obama accountable, even a little bit, to us – then we might see some of the change we want to see.
i have not forgotten that the last president to make big changes for workers rights, for the environment, etc – was Richard Nixon. i’m pretty sure he didn’t do those things out of the goodness of his heart *g*. he did them because he thought it would help him politically.
how can we leverage that kind power now?
McNasty and Barracuda ‘08
GET OUT OF THEIR WAY WORLD.
You like that? Pass it around, I think it has legs
love that story. i’ve been pretty down (convention blues i think). you and your peanut gave me a great way to start the day. many thanks for that.
As I watched Palin speak last night I thought she was doing well. She reads a teleprompter easily and is a decent speaker. This morning, after absorbing it, her words and her vitriol have left a bad taste in my mouth. Don’t get me wrong, even last night I hated what she was saying but after a few hours that dislike has turned to disgust. I think everyone was more interested to see if she could even speak on a national stage so there was a more clinical view of her speaking style. But, now, I see her in a more negative light than ever.
I think others will feel the same way. This is not someone who should be given power.
And how could Mitt Romney, who moved to Massachusetts to become it’s Governor, how could he stand there deriding Obama/Biden as “Eastern elites”
and then Rudy Guiliani *cough Kerik cough* derides Obama for machine party politics?
ain’t that the truth

away. Tried to submit this twice, had database connection error occurred twice. Keep getting the never-ending rotating circle of death lately, one feature that went with the last major upgrade and was not missed. This was intended for answering #19 but submission was fouled. Go Figure
Oh selise, do not get down. You are a trooper around here and we rely on your work and insight SO much. Hang in there.
Glad the story lifted your spirits.
Take care.
I didn’t hear much on how they were going to bring about change
her speech was all about bashing the other guy the media and her critics
I guess that’s what you do when you have little or nothing to offer
and as far as making a speech? she was reading from a teleprompter don’t forget she was a sportscaster at one time/
Ps just made another donation to the Obama Campaign these last couple months are gonna get real nasty!
I think there should be a very aggressive and pointed “Republicans for ‘Bama.” I think there are enough who are thoughtful/sane to be quite wary of a very old McC and very novel Palin to know that is a bad combination. I think probably even Condi is horrified; Todd Whitman certainly.
Of course, I am for Obama, and Biden is looking really, really good.
Bubble Brokaw thinks Troopergate Abuse of Power won’t amount to a hill of beans.
Bubble Brokaw also says (the idea of)Global Climate Change is very controversial. Yes Tom, it’s controversial because oil companies are spending billions to deny it.
Let me connect your home to the exhaust of an 18 wheeler running 24/7, and see if the air in your home gets “controversial.”
Biden was on CNN this morn. I missed the beginning. But when I tuned in he wasn’t discussing Palin, he was defending himself over the issue of his son’s lobbying career. It seemed to me he was given a ‘gotcha’ question rather than a question on Palin. But maybe I just missed something. Anyone see it?
thanks (especially for braving the spinning circle of doom). i have not read silber yet today. will do so… right after democracy now! which just started.
On CBS Biden talking about all the things she did not talk about (health care, housing,) and said she is wrong about Obama not having written any laws.

thank you.

klynn@54:
That was beautiful.
We just need to keep to the theme that it makes good sense, good stewardship, business efficiency and effectiveness and can create new jobs. The world is way ahead of us regarding carbon footprint and environmental laws. If our multinational corps, founded here and based here, are somehow thinking it’s effective to whine to the Repubs; then, the Repubs and the corps are doing no one any good and causing the US to lose serious competitive ground economically. Losing that competitive ground will ruin our economy even more. Country’s are at their most vulnerable from the standpoint of national security when their economy is threatened with bad practices and “yesterday’s thinking. Thinking in the today and tomorrow context moves the economy towards stability. Thus, strengthening our national security.
Ever time the repubs yell, “Drill, drill,” they are essentially yelling, “Kill, kill — the American economy and security.” Nice party platform.
Another t-shirt!
This thread has produced some perfect concepts to go viral…
I think the perfect example of American Wall Street Driven Corporations destroying themselves are GM, Chrysler and Ford. When Congress was trying to force American auto companies to become more competitive by raising CAFE miles-per-gallon standards, Rep. Dingell, and other “friends” of the industry “killed” all those attempts (in effect) to preserve the American Auto Industry. Wall Street has no conscience, no morals, and no live prisoners.
Will you be voting for McCain/Palin?
She is exactly the type I have studdied in my businiess for over twenty years. Beautiful, confident, and razor sharp. That being said, on a cursory examination of her private life, I would say she is a classic sociopath. Nothing will get in her way on the climb to the top. She will walk her children into the wood chipper of the media spotlight and not even blink an eye. She will look inoto the eye of the television monitor and lie as smoothly as silk. She is very dangerous. Think Nicole Kidman in “To Die For”. If she ever gets near the oval office we will have real trouble on our hands. JMHO
Selise,
Obama is a bit too cautious to go into Pakistan. When that quote came out, I felt it was just for politics to show he could be tough. Obama isn’t into the war thing, McCain is. Look at their temperament, big differences.
A 21-year USAF veteran with ten years of overseas assignments.
Sue – thanks. completely agree about mccain. hope you are right about obama. but even if you are, the foreign policy people he is now surrounding himself with – at the batshit crazy wing of the D party. not like during the primary when he went with the realist camp of imperialists (don’t like imperialists – but much rather have the realist kind than the batshit crazy kind).
If Obama calls her to task on her empty plan, he
will be called sexist.
Where is Hillary? She could take the bull on?
I keep thinking what Hillary has gone through. She
might be the only one who can shut her up.
GOP is threatened by intelligence and grassroots.
I was afraid to utter the word. But the idea waa floating in my head. 1 in 100 people, they say, are.

I believe her ‘repulsion’ body language started after this video went viral… You’re right, she can’t STAND to be hugged by him anymore.
