Question of the day: what does it say about McSame that the GOP wasn’t excited about the election before he picked Sarah Palin?
- Sarah Palin’s
positive upliftingspeech fact-checked. - Wait, are families off limits now?
- Josh Marshall and Nate think the speech will backfire.
- Oh noes! Let’s not let terrists get them "new-clear weapons."
- Ouch: "Sarah’s closest friends know she is in no way qualified for this position."
- Nooners tries to put the toothpaste back in the tube.
- Obama up in Ohio, Iowa and Minnesota.

About Firedoglake
When Hillary Clinton’s adult daughter, Chelsea, campaigned on her behalf, Hillary was accused of “pimping” her daughter.
So what is it called when Palin forces her pregnant minor daughter to marry a teenager in order to save face for the McCain campaign?
Can John McCain stand up to the Angry Right?
Oh, I forgot, he is the Angry Right.
As much as The Base ( English for Al Quaeda) may have loved it,
I really don’t think such nasty sarcasticness played well in Peoria.
That would be “sarcasm”.
No coffee yet.
It’s amazing how quickly Rove wrote this speech! He’s so busy now days with Fox news and his smear tour that finding the time must be a stretch..It must be a new mixture of the KoolAide supplement!
IF this dweeb from AK has a clue, a SINGLE clue, what shes getting herself into with the likes of the Republican smear machine she’ll run away as fast as she can…or be eaten alive and tossed aside like the rest of the non-insiders.
She has no plan, no experience in world affairs, no plan other than Newt’s on energy, no plan for education other than what Dobson tells her, no plan on health care, and no plan to re-build the country’s infrastructure. IF the republicans want to run on the issues rather than a beauty contest the game is over, but the media still seems to be dwelling on the money teet where they’re comfortable with no accountability.
If anyone looks past the smoke and mirrors and thinks of the implications these lunatics can have over our lives for generations, maybe centuries by appointing three judges on the Supreme Court to overturn most of laws from the last 50-80 years then they may think twice. But Rove is counting on everyone loosing sight of that small issue.
VERY dangerous folks…..
What did Roger Cohen have for breakfast this morning? His column reads like he wrote for FDL. Wonders never cease. The Establishment is terrified by Palin. And for good reason. She’s got Adolph’s rhetorical style with more than half his charm.
So, last night on The Daily Show, Stewart let Newt Gingrich repeat the “Palin has more executive experience than Obama and Biden combined” line and then said something to the effect: “Wouldn’t that also apply to John McCain?” To which Newt, after a pause, had to say, “Yes”. The executive experience argument has to be countered, every time, with McCain’s lack of the same.
Palin’s family is so on target.
Don’t forget /ss for scathing sarcasm ;-)
NLG lawyer Nester is being interviewed now on Democracy Now!
sounds like planning to sit in the street to block traffic, or working with people who plan to do that, is being considered terrorism.
nonviolent civil disobediance.
McCain and his right-wing bosses did the Dems a huge favor last night. Read more. http://www.tagg-lines.com/2008…..e-our.html
on democracy now! now – excellent discussion of the RNC welcoming committee and the anarchists organizers by the father of one of them. discussed his daughter’s work with the AFSC (Quakers).
I.don’t.want. her a heartbeat away
TED NUGENT IN HEELS
Authur Silber, who’s judgment I find sound writes using caution with Palin. The curse of nattering nabobs may ensue.

OMG, city of St. Paul got a $10 million indemnity from Rs to committ excess force in dealing with demonstrators.
license to do whatever they want. get sued? no problem they don’t pay for it.
i may not understand economics – but i do understand incentives.
lol!
Rove’s strategy is: Tora!, Tora!, Tora!
Sarah’s ONLY job is to attack Obama – the more lies the better – damn the facts.
It puts Obama in a position to have to defend himself – and makes him choose how hard he wants to bitch-slap her in response.
FYI: Karl Rove is the world’s most successful terrorist.
http://plungerspeaks.blogspot.com
Understanding incentives is at least 50% of understanding economics. It’s almost as if Rs paid city of SP to take off the gloves.
I had every intention of watching the speech then coming to the Lake to read the comments. Couldn’t do it. Turned it off after 10 minutes and went to bed. Just plain awful. Same ol’ reichwing bullshit. PBS showed one AA in the audience. That crowd was pure vanilla. Suits everywhere and those people in front with the white cowboy hats. Never seen that many lizard brains in one place at the same time.
“What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pitt bull? Lipstick.”
No, dipshit, a pit bull has a brain and doesn’t need Karl Rove to direct it to the bathroom.
When you are down to the final 28% in support, a little police brutality and torture is just the ticket. This is a script right out of “The Shock Doctrine”.
Nobody will like the next step now that we have progressed to torturing our own citizens (see Dr. Murphy’s post from last night for the documentation of systematic torture in the jail in St. Paul). The next step is disappearances.
Yep. And that $10 Million isn’t going to be enough.
Not only do right wingers pimp their own daughters, but they sleep with them too. See? It’s all good. White Trash America, coming up! Blowjobs are out but teenage pregnancies are now in!
It will be so wonderful seeing lots of 12-13 year old children pregnant and them saying, “I look up to Bristol”.
Same snarling fucking assholes as the purple bandaid shit last time.
Nugent’s an asshole.
Agree.
Palin is “Queen for a Day.” Queen of One-Liners that is. I guess what she offers the ticket is the ability to campaign by zingers. Where’s the beef?
I will be so proud of the youth of my country if the McCain/Palin Bridge To Nowhere gets in….
http://farm1.static.flickr.com…..d0.jpg?v=0
It’s gonna make us proud!
My bet is that, unlike NYC where the unlawfully arrested were eventually paid off, none of same will ever see a cent in SP.
I’d like to see DNA analysis for the whole Palin family.
Wasilla, Alaska…population 6,700.
Republican National Convention population during Sarah Palin’s speech: Double.
Population of Americans giving the finger to the republic party last night during Palin’s Wasilla Homecoming Speech: 100 million.
Priceless.
‘n smokestacks.
democracy now! is usually very, very good. today’s show is brilliant. very important information on the police and protesters at the rnc.
I would too. With 600,000 people living in Alaska, you just know most are related. Not their fault. It’s just the way it is.
Alaskan people live on federal contracts & welfare. And Sarah is against community organizers? Well of course she is! She doesn’t need them. She’s got the largest welfare state in the nation.
Just like Peggy Noonan and Mike Murphy said yesterday when they didn’t know they were being recorded: Palin’s pick is bullshit, the race is over, and the independents on the fence about McCain are now bolting.
Instead of suing the city I’d sue whatever cop’s name is at the bottom of the arrest affidavit. They’ve got personal liability insurance but not nearly enough to cover this shit.
Another family tree represented by a straight line.
i heard pretty directly (from starhawk who had just spoken with detainess) reports of torture in Miami 2003.
I second that.
In case you missed it last night, Jon Stewart provides lots of video documentation of the Republican double standard on the Palin qualifications arguments.
My aunt and uncle live there. I’ll check it out! :-)
I guess US people are not fooled by a pit bull with lipstick.
Rhymes with dipstick.
Interesting idea. Hope they do so.
Bluejeansntshirt are you lurking? Would like your feedback on the behavior of police in SP.
LOL! That’s what I thought…tree with no branches.
please don’t forget that our good fdl friend, Edward Teller, lives in alaska. and i think he’s feeling a little frustrated with some of what is being said about his home.
You can put lipstick on a Pig and it’s still a pig, but if you put lipstick on Sarah Palin her daughter gets pregnant!
Oh gawd. I’m going to barf now. Going to work. Have a great day everyone. ;-)
As a Mainah, I’ve been lambasted for years myself along the same line. I’m tough and I’m sure Edward is too. I’ve had liberals over on Ablog call me trailer trash because I own a 3 bedroom ranch. They don’t believe it’s a ranch and still to this day call me trailer trash. LOL! Do I care? No.
Are you s***ing me? Of course you’re not. You don’t do that. OMG! Link or source, please?!
lol. good call.
It’s been done.
Family values
Just switched over when y’all reminded me it’s on…….
Someone asking a delegate? questions…..one response: “Can they run the company?” Quickly corrected to “country”.
Ain’t that what’s known as a “tell”? :-(
Mornin’ all,
Edward Teller is on the case :D
Saradise Lost
Class action suit(s), then? Or individual. Assume ACLU is all over this. And yes, I am woefully ignorant about how the law works (assuming it does) in a situation like this.
Seventh Place in downtown St. Paul. A peaceful mall that includes, among other things, Park Square Theatre. An incredible little gem, where plays about pretty much everything from social justice to family dysfunction are presented. Before David’s cancer, we used to stroll the mall during intermission. Outdoor cafe seating. Protected from the wind.
Seventh Place in downtown St. Paul. The same place where a brown-skinned young man was slammed into the pavement and beaten by “St. Paul police” (but not likely).
It was an interview on democracynow.org about 20 minutes into the program (right before I commented at time stamp 5:21). dn usually gets the replay up in a couple of hours. I think the person who said that was the lawyer who Amy was interviewing. selise, you usually pay more attention to the details. Do you remember his name?
Thursday Night’s Drink Special at the RNC:
THREE-FINGER PROTEINS AND PHOSPHOLIPASE for all!
Palin was picked for ‘best of show’ when Repukes really needed a standout workhorse with an Amish bent. Rove can only orchestrate from eye candy perspective, (Rove’s opinion, it figures coming from a closet case). Throw in a little propaganda and there you have it, another Bush.
Palin is a walking talking example of the Big Lie. She is totally and completely unqualified so the Republicans treat her like their saviour.
Damn, couldn’t get on this site all last night, the old Couldn’t-find-the-server-routine.
I read the Wonkette live blog after the fact and could not stop laughing. They do snark very, very well. I did listen to her over NPR. Bad.
It is time to really unload on her. Teh God’s will in Iraq and the God’s will on exploiting the natural resources and bulding the $30 billion dollar gas pipeline are as good place to ridicule her as any, and McSame’s sanity at the sametime.
Are the republics gonna be able to keep her away from tradmed interviews for two months?
Guess a more important question: would it make any difference if they do?
You betcha. Commented last night during the speeches that the Rs are going for the BIG LIE.
Weapons Of Mass Distraction
Rove has managed to ensure that the entire news cycle is fully entrenched in trivial pursuits, while Darth Cheney sticks is finger in the eye of the Russian Bear – intentionally provoking World War
there’s nothing remotely Amish about that woman.
The Amish are good nonviolent community minded people.
Yep. Someone here at the Lake recently said Sarah Palin is to women what Clarence Thomas is to African Americans. I think that is the perfect analogy.
Does anyone know Palin’s education background?
OK. Coffee’s gone & I’m fully depressed. Time to get to my outdoor chores (while listening to 1984) before it gets too hot.
Someone last night — maybe JimWhite — called her the Gidget of the North.
from wiki
Undergraduate journalism degree……there’s been more info in the comments of recent posts but I’m clueless wrt searching.
Via wiki:
lol!
pretty sure it was bruce nester with the national lawyers guild.
Faster fingers than me copying and pasting. LOL
Do you trust anything wrt her on wiki after reports of the changes made immediately after announcement of her selection?
Mika on Morning Joe said “Palin brings dimension to the stage” but my ears heard “dementia”.
Oooh, that one’s funny but it wasn’t me. Don’t remember who said it.
Elliott and Hugh: Thanks! I be lazy. {blush}
One way to punish St. Paul for its support of police brutality would be to find what other conventions are considering events there and try to get them to drop SP from their plans.
And that’s the deal the Obama campaign needs to address. They can’t go with the nuance of “The Big Lie,” meme because–true as it is–it is too complex an argument and the main stream media won’t give it the time of day…more’s the pity.
No, what the Obama campaign needs to do, pure and simple, is put this right smack in the media’s lap. Say this, “Sarah Palin is a liar.”
It’s that simple. Say it once, say it twice, say it a hundred times. Say it often enough to make the Media (or even just the poor goopers who can barely spell google) do the fact checking. The facts are there. She doesn’t just spin, she lies.
Now, in point of fact, she really just repeats lies that others have given her to say, but pointing that out would be drawing attention to the fact that she is low class, trash, and that’s NOT the meme the Obama campaign can afford to project…more’s the pity, again because THAT is certainly true.
Since I haven’t had cable in eons has anyone seen Andrea Koppel lately? Used to be State Dept correspondent for CNN iirc. She was another reichwing warmonger.
Wow! That article from the Seattle People Examiner is insightful—Sarah really IS McSame’s soulmate!
I’m anxious to hear what Garrison Keilor (sp?) has to say on Prairie Home Companion this week.
second hour of democracy now! is starting now. (2 hour show instead of one hour during the conventions)
I do wonder just who will be the stand in for sexy sarah for Biden’s practice debates? Can they get Britney?
Tom Brokaw tellin Mika and Scar that Palin created a sisterhood last night.
Barf.
“He sees himself in her”
…as he fingers his wedding ring
the problem is that it is not a universal SP issue and many there are fighting it. i wouldn’t support any kind of boycott unless our allies there asked for that kind of action.
When McCain was running against George Bush for the republican nomination, I had some respect for him. He was running as though he was a different type of repub. He is just another repub who cares more about our sex lives than our pocketbooks.
That would be the convention year that I last voted. Voting from overseas requires one to vote in the place last voted from. As an ex-patriot, there was an overriding moral requirement to vote. I suspect my vote was invalidated as I no longer live or own my last address. I suspect the vote was purged by the Republican shenanigans in New Mexico that year. At that time I was most distressed for having to vote for candidates whom I had no information on. I shan’t be revisiting that feeling again, ever.Y’all are on your own for this one, make sure there is accountability or a firing squad this time. ;-)
Sadly, I agree with you. Sadly, because a lot of non-complicit people will be/are being financially devastated by this horror story and it’s forward-reaching tentacles (mixed metaphor alert). And by and large, St. Paul (I grew up in Minneapolis, btw) is a relatively quiet city where nothing much bad happens (yes, there are exceptions, I imagine), and it is peopled by lots of fine folks. There has to be a boatload of shame building up over this. Think Dallas and JFK. I reckon Dallas is an okay place, but the mention of its name immediately brings to mind the assassination. Okay, that and Roger Staubach. Cannot fathom how the citizens must feel living in a police state. Oh, wait. That’s me. I feel like crap.
Do not be missing him! He must be absolutely furious. I sent him my photo of the storm troopers in front of the Fitzgerald Theatre where he broadcasts. Chilling.
The “Mean, money grubbing, sex in the dark only sisterhood.”
I think Mrs. McPharmaceuticals may have a shot.
Not as “off topic” ypou might think: Here’s the trailer for Milk. As you can see, after all these years NOTHING has changed. And I’m not talking about gay rights alone. I’m talking about ALL politics full bore. Looking forward to this now more than ever, especially as Sarah Palin has identified the Iraq invasion as a Holy War.
What’s the difference between Palin and Bin Ladin?
Lipstick.
Palin’s lack of experience makes no difference. Lobbyists run the McCain campaign and will completely run a McCain Administration.
A boycott would hurt the local small businesses more than the “city”. Now if city officials are business owners that could be looked into on a case by case basis. Don’t want to hurt folks having no control over matters. I agree that the locals should be the ones calling the shots in a boycott or similar action.
Saw Biden on Mornin’ Joe and wasn’t real happy with him. Maybe they want a day or two to see how things play out after the speech, but all he did was compliment her in getting elected governor and say jhe has his work cut out for him in a debate.
And that line about the Caucasus……. not too obvious “See, I know about that foreign stuff.”
It’s that simple. Say it once, say it twice, say it a hundred times. Say it often enough to make the Media (or even just the poor goopers who can barely spell google) do the fact checking. The facts are there. She doesn’t just spin, she lies.
Sounds right to me.
Although the media, and candidates, seem to be allergic to the word “lie”. Just – won’t – say it.
It’s an easy word really. One syllable – easy to spell – rhymes with a lot of things – “Pie”, for example. Olbermann will say the word “Lie”, I heard Obama’s spokesman say “Lie”, but to networks, newspapers, and most pundits, the word “L.I.E.” is a four-letter word.
Good on ya.
considering we are discussing the likes of Matlin, Coulter, Ingraham – a little ed. note
The “Mean, money grubbing, sex in the
darkdungeon only sisterhood.”:D mornin’ tiger man
“See, I
knowlearn fast about that foreign stuff.”Aw, forget it. My version veers too close to the truth.
yeah. but that doesn’t mean we do nothing. to start with, kirk posted the phone numbers again last night with info on calling and what to focus on.
i’ll be calling again this morning.
thanks to the pups who reminded me of Democracy Now! this morning. I’m just not in the mood for the smugness that I assume to be abounding on JoeScar today.
We can hold the Clintons responsible for this new low in American politics. They are the ones who produced Kenneth Starr and energized and “legitimized” the evangelical and right wing anti intellectual fringes in this country.
I can just imagine the Clintons running against McCain and the the Bushes and screwing that up the same way they ran the terrible and disorganized HRC campaign, now blamed on “sexist media” the same way the Clintons blamed Lewinsky on a vast right wing conspiracy.
Thank goodness for Obama and please lift us away from all of this.
Section 1985 part 3 seems to give the people pushed around in Saint Paul basis for legal action against the local authorities and the RNC:
IANAL.
Right. It also occurs to me that if the GOP was so big on “executive experience” their ticket would be Romney/Ghouliani or Romney/Huckabee. Newt was oft script. Their rejoinder is see, it’s the combination.. He has what she doesn’t; she has what he doesn’t (executive experience). Like, it’s a balance, ya know?
(bows) Konnichiwa, cbl
Stranded on an island with any one or all three there’s not enough Viagra in the world that would help me. Aw, shit, now I gotta heave.
Loved your comment about “one…hair of Amy’s” at your place. Quoted it here a couple times. Hope you don’t mind.
Oh, I get it. Balance. Like Obama and Biden. /s
Now you, of all people, should know that I’m not a “do nothing” dude. Requires a liberal interpretation of the Tao, is all.
I think the dems could do well to go back to the Repub debates and see what, if anything, McCain had to say when Romney talked about his superior “executive experience.” Romney never shut up about that. At one point I know McCain said he ran “the largest” fighter squadron.
late in the thread, so hopefully you all will forgive me for posting this in full. no link yet, but later today it will be at starhark’s website. just received it via listserv:
That’s why it’s crucial that it come from the campaign, so that it HAS to be reported and no mincing of words.
“Sarah Palin is a liar.”
Say it without malice (hard as that may be), but say it with intent and say it often!
Brokaw never missed an opportunity to fluff Sarah Palin – except when Keith Olbermann paid Brokaw a compliment that threw Brokaw off track.
Olbermann implied that Brokaw was a wise old sage. Being duly flattered, Brokaw then launched into a personal anecdote that got him off the Palin scent.
Kudos to Olbermann for that. Brokaw could not resist the opportunity to talk about himself – even if just for a moment.
no “executive experience” there. Sarah has more than they do combined. Doncha know?
I think it’s more she has what he wants.
what would we do without john stewart? the guy gives me hope. I can’t believe he’s still on tv.
and re the link to williams blog in alaska, hair extensions??
i have no doubt about that. *g*
hey, pups, come on up to Christy’s thread
Saint Paul’s mayor and the Republican Party don’t seem terribly interested in the damage that the city’s out of control police are doing to the city’s reputation. Any action that would get the mayor to take notice would have to be something big enough to affect the city as a whole. Other than a recall of the mayor which may not even be possible under Minnesota law the only other avenue that I know of is targeting the convention trade.
I finally figured out who Palin reminds me of…Tonya Harding. Macho strutting in a tutu.
Off to the great capitalist cesspool.
Boss has stayed home watching the convention all week. Good idea on his part. He’ll only have to listen to me laugh at him once or twice instead of every day. Drives him nuts. Stick my head in the door and laugh, walk away.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
I am having a great deal of trouble connecting to FDL . . so maybe this observation has already been discussed. A young man in Georgia–Genarlow Wilson (?)–did the same thing as Sarah’s son-in-law-to-be. Sadly, he was convicted of statutory rape . . . sentenced to 12 years, and served at least two before an advocate secured his release. Sarah’s soon-to-be son-in-law, instead, plans to marry the VP-nominee and parade before the world. [IMO, the young man may escape imprisonment at the hands of the state . . . but as a member of this family-values family, is he facing a life sentence?]
does all this basically come down to Ohio, Florida and maybe Colorado? If Obama wins either Ohio or Flori-DUH, he’ll likely win, yes? If he loses both, he can’t win without CO?
KO obviously employed some psychology there. Blowhard Doofus Brokejaw was a like child to candy.
iirc, i’ve read there was a big conflict in the SP city council (will look to see if i can find the details). but we do we have allies there – if we take unilateral action against those who have been our allies, they may turn against us if a boycott is successful. this is only one of the reasons it is so important to work with our allies there and follow their lead if possible. very different dynamic gets engaged – even if in the end the actions are the same or similar.
no shit, the old goat!
rasmussen say that among unaffiliateds 42% say Obama has better experience than palin while 37% give Palin the edge. Ya think this “she has more experience” stuff is catching on? you know, repeat it enough… It’s preposterous that it gets any traction. Look, Tom Carvel had more executive experience than almost anyone ever. Did that make him a viable Presidential prospect? He couldn’t even say “Cookie Puss” without drooling.
This information was found on BBC

Zombie plague sweeps the internet
The summer saw a surge in the number of hijacked home PCs or ”zombies”, say security experts.
The Shadowserver Foundation, which tracks zombie numbers, said it had seen at least a threefold increase in the last three months.
More than 450,000 computers are now part of zombie networks, or botnets, run by hi-tech criminals, it said.
The rise is believed to be linked to attacks that booby-trap websites to try to infect the machines of visitors.
Palin didn’t write that speech, she just read it (and as far as Republicans are concerned, she read it well, and she’s pretty, so what else do we need to know). The good news for Obama: if that’s the best work of the best Republican speechwriters, they don’t have a SINGLE thing to say about the issues. And judging from the horsewhipping the public gave Obama prior to his acceptance address, that’s what the public wants to hear about. The public isn’t going to buy it when Republican leaders say “the people vote for personalities not issues.” Maybe yesterday, but yesterday the people weren’t broke.
